The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues have plagued the GMC Safari, causing various malfunctions and failures. Complaints include problems with the alternator, ABS fuse, and rear axles. Owners have reported instances of electrical components failing, leading to costly repairs and potential safety hazards. For instance, replacing the alternator can cost under $300.
  • Heater Malfunction: Another common complaint among GMC Safari owners is the heater not working properly. This issue can be particularly troublesome in cold weather or during winter months, affecting the comfort and functionality of the vehicle. Owners have reported this problem in the 2000 Safari model, highlighting the need for repairs to ensure proper heating functionality.
  • HVAC System Issues: The HVAC system in the GMC Safari has been a source of complaints, with owners reporting problems related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Malfunctions in this system can lead to discomfort for passengers and driver alike, especially in extreme weather conditions. Addressing HVAC issues may require repairs to ensure optimal performance and passenger comfort.
  • Suspension Concerns: Complaints about the suspension system in the GMC Safari have been raised by owners, indicating issues with the vehicle's stability and ride comfort. Addressing these issues promptly can help owners avoid costly repairs and potential safety risks associated with these recurring problems.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-01
  • VIN: 1GKEL19W51B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW GOES PART WAY DOWN, WILL NOT GO OUT - INTERMITTENT PROBLEM INCREASED TO PERMANENT PROBLEM. NOW GOES DOWN MAYBE 1/2 INCH, ONLY GOES UP 1/32 INCH AT A TIME. HAS BEEN REPAIRED TWICE, NEEDS REPAIR AGAIN. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED IN 6/03, NOT LONG AFTER THAT, PROBLEM SURFACED IN INCREASING REGULARITY. WHEN I HAD PROBLEM REPAIRED BY DEALER IN 1/04, I WAS TOLD THIS HAD BEEN REPAIRED BEFORE. ITEMS REPAIRED / REPLACED, WERE: 1314WSC95 - ELECTRICAL MISC. PO45391 - MOTOR PO45386 - ACTUATOR SEVERAL RIVETS. THE REPAIR FACILITY DESCRIBED THE WINDOW PROBLEM AS "BINDING", AND A ALSO FOUND THAT THE DOOR LOCK WAS NOT ACTIVATING PROPERLY DUE TO A DOOR LOCK MECHANISM PROBLEM (THE ACTUATOR) AS HAVING AN "INTERNAL SHORT". THE REPAIR OF 1/04 WAS GOOD FOR ABOUT 14 MONTHS (DEALER REFUSED TO WARRANT WORK), WHEN IN 3/05, THE PROBLEM HAD GRADUALLY RETURNED. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER IF THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, HE SAID IT WAS NOT. I RECENTLY DECIDED TO LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM AS I AM ABOUT TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AGAIN, AND SEE THAT THE PASSENGER WINDOWS ON GMC VANS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM FOR A LONG TIME. I BELIEVE THE MALFUNCTIONING WINDOW IS A HAZARD, AS IT CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR THE DRIVER WHEN DISTRACTED BY A MALFUNCTIONING WINDOW, WHICH IS USED TO PROTECT THE VEHICLES OCCUPANTS FROM WEATHER, SMOKE, DUST AND DIRT, WIND AND EVEN POTENTIAL CRIMINALS. MY ATTENTION HAS BEEN DRAWN AWAY FROM THE NORMAL HAZARDS OF URBAN AND HIGHWAY DRIVING BY THE DISTRACTION OF A MALFUNCTIONING WINDOW. WHY HAS THIS BEEN ALLOWED TO BE A PROLIFIC PROBLEM FOR SO LONG? I WONDER JUST HOW MANY COMPLAINTS YOU HAVE RECEIVED ON THIS ISSUE? DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO ACTUALLY DIE BEFORE YOU TAKE ACTION? *NM

Negative 2001 Gmc Safari car reviews

  1. Kiel Rutherford 2024-11-23

This vehicle had several issues during the two-year period, including brakes warping, bad tires, water leaks around the seals, broken receiver on seatbelt (driver's), paint peeling on the plastic bumper in circular patterns, electric lock actuator burned out (passenger side), unbalanced tires from the factory, doors misaligned from the factory, and side panel on seat broke twice because of plastic rivet mounts. Despite these issues, the dealer only provided me with a loaner car once in seventeen trips. I believe that these problems could have been avoided with better quality control during the manufacturing process.

  2. Elliot Zulauf 2024-09-13

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had your van for 5 years and it's been able to accommodate your family of 5 and all your camping gear, as well as tow your boat! While it's unfortunate that you've had some issues with little things breaking like the power window and seat motors, it's good to know that it always had enough power. As for the gas and maintenance costs, it's understandable that a larger vehicle like a van would require more upkeep. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Stan Kling 2024-08-29

The 2000 Safari did not meet my expectations. Despite having a '90 Chevy Astro van, I found the Safari to be unreliable with multiple issues such as transmission problems at 8500 and 22000 miles, a replaced A/C compressor at 5000 miles, and a random engine stumble that the dealer could not repair. Additionally, the exhaust tone in the rear of the van was obnoxious and the drivability of the drive train was subpar.

  4. Modesto Keeling 2024-07-25

The car experienced multiple issues from the beginning, including problems with the brakes and steel belts on the tires. Additionally, the catalytic converter and muffler required replacement within a year, and there was an issue with grease under the floormats shortly after purchase. These issues suggest poor quality control at both the dealer and factory. It is unfortunate that Haskins went out of business and GM is losing repeat customers due to these recurring problems.

  5. Lesley Lueilwitz 2024-06-19

This van may not be the best option for you. The rattling noise inside the van cannot be repaired and the fuel mileage is quite poor, with only 17 miles per gallon on the highway and 13 miles per gallon in the city. Additionally, the cloth interior is not very durable and stains easily. The brakes wear out quickly, with the third set already needed at 30,000 miles. The rotors were also warped from the factory. It is important to note that the cost of throttle service is quite expensive and may not be affordable for everyone.

This van is perfect for large families! Your kids will love the rear radio.

  2. Ken Brakus 2024-07-04

Great gas mileage compared to the Ford Windstar and a lot more room. You can even tow a trailer with it, which is a plus. Prior to this, we had a Contour that only got about fourteen miles to the gallon, so getting twenty feels amazing!

  3. Adrien Feil 2024-06-13

The van has a lot of great features, but one thing to keep in mind is that the interior trim components may not be as sturdy as some people would like. Additionally, the step up to the running boards can be a bit tricky. Overall, though, it's a great vehicle!

  4. Diego Swaniawski 2024-04-25

This van is excellent for space. I really need it because I have 5 kids. I love the features. I love this van.

  5. Hershel Rutherford 2024-02-16

I have had an amazing experience with this van! I consider myself lucky to have found such a reliable vehicle. Since purchasing this 2001 SLE in April of 2009 with 120K miles, I have only had to replace the tires. I took it to my mechanic's shop and it passed with flying colors. Even after a year and 25K miles later, it still runs strong with 145K miles, no smoke, plenty of power, and handles wonderfully. It's also very comfortable for my bad back with 4 herniated discs. I use it almost every weekend to haul a large amount of musical gear to the stage. I truly believe that a 2011 or 2012 return would be a very smart decision. Thank you for considering this amazing van!
