Gmc Safari problems

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common Gmc Safari problems
Common Problems with GMC Safari Cars
- Acceleration Problems: A 1994 GMC Safari owner reported acceleration issues, where the car lags and doesn't accelerate properly when going from 0 to 40 mph or more. The owner had to keep pushing the pedal faster and faster to accelerate the vehicle. This problem can be caused by a dirty sensor behind the water pump, a bad wire, a throttle body issue, or a faulty oxygen sensor.
- Rough Idle: The 1996 GMC Safari has experienced rough idle issues, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by various factors, including a faulty throttle position sensor, dirty fuel injectors, or a vacuum leak.
- Rear Doors Won't Open: The 1995 GMC Safari has had issues with rear doors not opening, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty door latch assembly, a damaged door hinge, or a problem with the door actuator.
- Transfer Case Lockup: The 2000 GMC Safari has experienced transfer case lockup issues, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty transfer case actuator, a damaged transfer case motor, or a problem with the transfer case control module.
- Heater Not Working: The 2000 GMC Safari has had issues with the heater not working, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty heater core, a damaged blend door actuator, or a problem with the heater control module.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The GMC Safari's fuel pump is known to fail, especially when the fuel level is low. It is recommended to keep the fuel level above 1/4 tank and park the van on hills facing downward to reduce stress on the fuel pump.
- Transmission Failure: The GMC Safari's transmission can fail, requiring a rebuild. Installing a transmission oil cooler can help extend the transmission's lifespan, especially in hot summer conditions with heavy cargo.
- Vacuum Rubber Line Melting: The vacuum rubber line that operates the cabin heater controls can melt, costing around $20 to fix. This problem is more common in hot weather conditions.
- Alternator Failure: The alternator can fail due to the high heat under the hood, costing around $300 to replace.
- Engine Oil Cooler Line Leaks: The engine oil cooler lines can leak, with GM charging a high price for replacement parts. It is recommended to replace these lines with third-party piping for a lower cost.
- Front Steering Idler Arm Wear: The front steering idler arms need to be replaced often, with MOOG brand idler arms recommended for replacement. These should be greased during every engine oil change.
- Rear Axle Failure: The rear axles, especially the default factory 342 gearing, can fail, especially in vehicles with heavy cargo or towing trailers. It is recommended to install a transmission oil cooler and consider a RWD van with 373 or 411 gearing for heavy cargo or towing.
- Timbren SES Unit Installation: Installing Timbren SES units can eliminate factory mush up/down rear suspension and mass rear sag, providing better handling and load capacity.
Are GMC Safaris reliable?
GMC Safari fan
It has been very reliable and gets >17.5 mpg doing package delivery in northern Nevada. It drives well, feels planted on the road and is rattle free. With regular maintenance this van should easily eclipse 200K miles.
Why was the GMC Safari discontinued?
Ultimately by 2005 the Astro van was very dated and was only popular with commercial customers. Since the Astro van had low sales figures it did not make sense for GM to invest the money in another redesign. In 2005 GM officially announced the discontinuation of the Astro and Safari vans.

- Summary: THIS VAN BELONGS TO MY MOTHER. MY SISTER WAS DRIVING THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. SHE IS 60 YRS OF AGE AND A VERY GOOD DRIVER. HER DESCRIPTION: "JUST PULLING AWAY FROM ONE LIGHT & COMING UP TO ANOTHER. WASN'T GOING MORE THAN 20 MPH. STEP ON THE BRAKES & THEY WEREN'T THERE." THE ACCIDENT CAUSED ABOUT $500 IN DAMAGE TO THE HONDA AUTO THAT WAS STRUCK, AND SIMILAR LIGHT DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER OF THE SAFARI. I INSPECTED SYSTEM AND FOUND NO LEAKS, AND CONCLUDED THAT MASTER CYLINDER MAY BE FAILING, SO I REPLACED IT. AFTER THAT REPAIR, HAD EXCELLENT PEDAL. I BORROWED THE VAN A FEW DAYS LATER, AND WHILE DRIVING IT, I EXPERIENCED THE SAME NO BRAKE CONDITION 3 TIMES, ONCE WHICH LEFT THE FRONT END OUT INTO AN INTERSECTION (LUCKILY, NO COLLISION). I RECOGNIZED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WAS ERRONEOUSLY KEEPING THE FRONT BRAKES FROM APPLYING, AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED THE NO BRAKE CONDITION. A GM MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO PULL THE ABS FUSE. I DID SO, AND NOW THE VAN HAS GREAT BRAKES, EVERY TIME. I HAVE DONE THE SAME TO ANOTHER FAMILY VEHICLE ALSO EQUIPPED WITH THIS DANGEROUS SYSTEM; I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL IT CAUSES ANOTHER ACCIDENT. THIS CONDITION SCREAMS FOR YOUR ATTENTION. NO ONE WAS HURT BY THIS PARTICULAR FAILURE INCIDENT (EXCEPT FINANCIALLY), BUT IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE ENDS UP GLIDING INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION, OR OVER A CROSSWALK, AND DOES CAUSE A DEATH OR TWO. PLEASE HAVE ALL THESE DANGEROUS ABS VEHICLES RECALLED, AND HAVE THESE SAFETY FEATURES-TURNED-SAFETY HAZARDS DEFEATED, BEFORE SOMEONE DOES BECOME A VICTIM.

I bought this van brand new in January 1996 and have had no major problems with it. The front brakes have been replaced twice, but that's about it. Unfortunately, the plastic door handle on the passenger side broke inside the door, which was a major hassle to fix. However, it wasn't a major expense since I have a friend who is a mechanic and has the right tools. The power door lock doesn't always connect with the sliding passenger side door, but two clicks usually do the trick when it misfires. Recently, I had to replace the fuel pump at 123,000 miles, but the van gave me plenty of warning. It started running rough at about 118,000 miles, so I had it tuned up at 105,000 miles. With three kids in sports, this van has been a lifesaver.

I love my 1998 GMC Safari van, which I affectionately named 'Green Pasture'. It has served me well as a comfortable camper van, even though it's now 22 years old and needs some wear and tear replacements. I've already replaced the front brake system, cooling system, head gasket, and alternator. Recently, I moved back to Texas and took my van to Donathan's Automotive in Granbury. They were amazing and offered a Trip Check service for only $100, which helped me prioritize what needed to be done. Unfortunately, after 22 years of enduring NJ salt, snow, and sea air, my beloved van has finally succumbed to frame rot. Although I could rebuild it, the cost would be too high. However, the engine and transmission are still running smoothly, and it purrs like a kitten. If you're lucky enough to find one of these vans in good condition, I highly recommend it. They're built like tanks and can last for over 300k miles. I'll still take my van on small trips around town, but it's time to retire it.

Your vehicle has over 215,000 miles on it and it still runs like a top. You have had to do the normal maintenance things, of course, but it has been serviced regularly and it keeps on going. It actually handles better than your '05 (with a tighter turning radius) and the power is still good. The rear end has had a noise in it since day one, but apparently, this is simply a characteristic of it since you have heard that several times about the '94-96 Safari XT's. You have never had a problem with it though. You have owned your first new car in '69, so you have had a lot of them, but never one better than this one. Maybe that's why GM discontinued it, it was too damn good.

Vehicle year: 2005
The Safari is an amazing van! I can't believe that 2005 was the last year they were made. It is incredibly comfortable and spacious for travel, and can even carry an elephant with ease! This is actually my second Safari, and if they were still sold, I wouldn't even consider any other vehicle. My previous one lasted for 223,000 miles and got an impressive 28 miles to the gallon (thanks to fuel injection). It was like a tank with zip and personality, and I never had to replace anything other than the tires and brakes. My new 2005 model is a bit more refined on the interior, but unfortunately, some space was removed. It also gets less mileage, but my only real complaint is that the steering radius is very slight.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I got this van back in the summer of 2007 with 69000 miles on it and it has been my daily ride ever since. Unfortunately, in 2010, my van experienced a fuel pump problem and we replaced it, but it still isn't running quite right. As a result, it has been parked for over a year now until I have the funds to take it in for repairs. Despite these issues, I still have a lot of love for my van! I did want to mention that there is a clunking sound when you take off, but I'm hopeful that it's nothing too serious. Thanks for listening!

I purchased this van brand new and unfortunately experienced several issues with it. The seat adjuster, door lock switch, and window assembly all malfunctioned within the first three years, which were not covered by the warranty. Additionally, the sliding door came off the tracks by year five, and I had to replace the engine at 57000 miles. Despite these challenges, I have not received any assistance from GMC with the repairs. However, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a GMC and would consider doing so again in the future.

This van is perfect for hauling your family and all your cargo! It's been great both in town and on the highway. While it may not be the most stylish vehicle on the road, it certainly gets the job done. Just make sure to keep up with regular maintenance to keep it in top shape.

I purchased this van brand new from the dealer as a family vehicle. I mainly used it for grocery runs and taking my kids to school. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the vehicle. The bucket seat broke at 14K miles, costing $305.61 to repair. At 23K miles, I had to replace the distributor cap and rotor for $116.90. The electric door locks stopped working at 29K miles and required a repair cost of $45.34. Later, the sliding door came off the tracks, which cost $197.28 to fix. The catalytic converter had to be replaced at 50K miles for $569.95. Unfortunately, the engine blew at 57K miles. I reached out to GMC Corp. to see if they could assist with the repair cost, but they denied my request. While I am disappointed, I understand that GMC cannot always back up their products. Thank you for your time.

Hi there! I've actually had this vehicle for over 10 years now and I absolutely love it. It runs really well, but there is a bit of rust that has developed over time.

This vehicle is incredibly reliable and useful. It has lots of power and interior room, while still maintaining affordable fuel economy. Additionally, both the hardware and paint seem to be holding up well.
