Gmc Safari problems

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common Gmc Safari problems
Common Problems with GMC Safari Cars
- Acceleration Problems: A 1994 GMC Safari owner reported acceleration issues, where the car lags and doesn't accelerate properly when going from 0 to 40 mph or more. The owner had to keep pushing the pedal faster and faster to accelerate the vehicle. This problem can be caused by a dirty sensor behind the water pump, a bad wire, a throttle body issue, or a faulty oxygen sensor.
- Rough Idle: The 1996 GMC Safari has experienced rough idle issues, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by various factors, including a faulty throttle position sensor, dirty fuel injectors, or a vacuum leak.
- Rear Doors Won't Open: The 1995 GMC Safari has had issues with rear doors not opening, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty door latch assembly, a damaged door hinge, or a problem with the door actuator.
- Transfer Case Lockup: The 2000 GMC Safari has experienced transfer case lockup issues, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty transfer case actuator, a damaged transfer case motor, or a problem with the transfer case control module.
- Heater Not Working: The 2000 GMC Safari has had issues with the heater not working, with 2 complaints on file. This problem can be caused by a faulty heater core, a damaged blend door actuator, or a problem with the heater control module.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The GMC Safari's fuel pump is known to fail, especially when the fuel level is low. It is recommended to keep the fuel level above 1/4 tank and park the van on hills facing downward to reduce stress on the fuel pump.
- Transmission Failure: The GMC Safari's transmission can fail, requiring a rebuild. Installing a transmission oil cooler can help extend the transmission's lifespan, especially in hot summer conditions with heavy cargo.
- Vacuum Rubber Line Melting: The vacuum rubber line that operates the cabin heater controls can melt, costing around $20 to fix. This problem is more common in hot weather conditions.
- Alternator Failure: The alternator can fail due to the high heat under the hood, costing around $300 to replace.
- Engine Oil Cooler Line Leaks: The engine oil cooler lines can leak, with GM charging a high price for replacement parts. It is recommended to replace these lines with third-party piping for a lower cost.
- Front Steering Idler Arm Wear: The front steering idler arms need to be replaced often, with MOOG brand idler arms recommended for replacement. These should be greased during every engine oil change.
- Rear Axle Failure: The rear axles, especially the default factory 342 gearing, can fail, especially in vehicles with heavy cargo or towing trailers. It is recommended to install a transmission oil cooler and consider a RWD van with 373 or 411 gearing for heavy cargo or towing.
- Timbren SES Unit Installation: Installing Timbren SES units can eliminate factory mush up/down rear suspension and mass rear sag, providing better handling and load capacity.
Are GMC Safaris reliable?
GMC Safari fan
It has been very reliable and gets >17.5 mpg doing package delivery in northern Nevada. It drives well, feels planted on the road and is rattle free. With regular maintenance this van should easily eclipse 200K miles.
Why was the GMC Safari discontinued?
Ultimately by 2005 the Astro van was very dated and was only popular with commercial customers. Since the Astro van had low sales figures it did not make sense for GM to invest the money in another redesign. In 2005 GM officially announced the discontinuation of the Astro and Safari vans.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THIS VAN BELONGS TO MY MOTHER. MY SISTER WAS DRIVING THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. SHE IS 60 YRS OF AGE AND A VERY GOOD DRIVER. HER DESCRIPTION: "JUST PULLING AWAY FROM ONE LIGHT & COMING UP TO ANOTHER. WASN'T GOING MORE THAN 20 MPH. STEP ON THE BRAKES & THEY WEREN'T THERE." THE ACCIDENT CAUSED ABOUT $500 IN DAMAGE TO THE HONDA AUTO THAT WAS STRUCK, AND SIMILAR LIGHT DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER OF THE SAFARI. I INSPECTED SYSTEM AND FOUND NO LEAKS, AND CONCLUDED THAT MASTER CYLINDER MAY BE FAILING, SO I REPLACED IT. AFTER THAT REPAIR, HAD EXCELLENT PEDAL. I BORROWED THE VAN A FEW DAYS LATER, AND WHILE DRIVING IT, I EXPERIENCED THE SAME NO BRAKE CONDITION 3 TIMES, ONCE WHICH LEFT THE FRONT END OUT INTO AN INTERSECTION (LUCKILY, NO COLLISION). I RECOGNIZED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WAS ERRONEOUSLY KEEPING THE FRONT BRAKES FROM APPLYING, AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED THE NO BRAKE CONDITION. A GM MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO PULL THE ABS FUSE. I DID SO, AND NOW THE VAN HAS GREAT BRAKES, EVERY TIME. I HAVE DONE THE SAME TO ANOTHER FAMILY VEHICLE ALSO EQUIPPED WITH THIS DANGEROUS SYSTEM; I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL IT CAUSES ANOTHER ACCIDENT. THIS CONDITION SCREAMS FOR YOUR ATTENTION. NO ONE WAS HURT BY THIS PARTICULAR FAILURE INCIDENT (EXCEPT FINANCIALLY), BUT IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE ENDS UP GLIDING INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION, OR OVER A CROSSWALK, AND DOES CAUSE A DEATH OR TWO. PLEASE HAVE ALL THESE DANGEROUS ABS VEHICLES RECALLED, AND HAVE THESE SAFETY FEATURES-TURNED-SAFETY HAZARDS DEFEATED, BEFORE SOMEONE DOES BECOME A VICTIM.

Hi there! We've been the proud owners of our Safari since 1995, when we bought it as a lease car with only 15,800 miles on it. We've taken it on countless trips all over Florida and into the north Georgia mountains, towing a 16-foot travel trailer with ease. The comfort and durability of this vehicle are top-notch! Of course, the gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected with a vehicle of this size (we average around 11-12 MPG when towing). The only issue we've encountered is some carbon build-up in the exhaust ports, which can cause the engine to surge or die out. However, we recently had the exhaust ports de-carbonized and it seems to have solved the problem. Overall, we highly recommend the Safari for anyone looking for a reliable and sturdy vehicle for their travels!

I have had an amazing experience with this van! I consider myself lucky to have found such a reliable vehicle. Since purchasing this 2001 SLE in April of 2009 with 120K miles, I have only had to replace the tires. I took it to my mechanic's shop and it passed with flying colors. Even after a year and 25K miles later, it still runs strong with 145K miles, no smoke, plenty of power, and handles wonderfully. It's also very comfortable for my bad back with 4 herniated discs. I use it almost every weekend to haul a large amount of musical gear to the stage. I truly believe that a 2011 or 2012 return would be a very smart decision, and I highly recommend this van to anyone in need of a reliable vehicle.

I'm so glad I bought this car! When I needed a vehicle with plenty of room and power, it was the perfect choice. Although it was a bit of a wreck when I first got it, I put in some work and now it performs flawlessly. One of the things I love about it is its amazing ability to handle heavy cargo without affecting the mileage too much (although the fuel economy isn't great to begin with). Even though it has 186,000 miles on it (300,000 KM!!!), I have no plans of selling it anytime soon.

Our first van was a 1991 Safari SLE, which we loved. However, we now have the SLT and we love it even more for its seating and comfort. Our second Safari van has everything we wished for in our first one. We are thrilled with it! The only thing that could make it better is if it had power door openers for the side and back doors. We have compared it to many SUVs and so far, we like what we have better. The mileage could be better, but it could also be worse!

This is the perfect vehicle if you need to transport six people with AWD. We have owned two Safaris and have found them to be excellent in terms of overall functionality. Although the interior could use some improvements such as larger front leg room, driver side passenger doors and a few more cupholders, the larger size more than makes up for these shortcomings. It is perfect for long road trips with 4 kids and can easily carry all the gear. The AWD works great in snow and the 4.3 L V-6 has sufficient power. We have had no major mechanical problems with this van or its predecessor, although there have been some minor interior trim issues.

I purchased this van brand new and unfortunately experienced several issues with it. The seat adjuster, door lock switch, and window assembly all malfunctioned within the first three years, which were not covered by the warranty. Additionally, the sliding door came off the tracks by year five, and I had to replace the engine at 57000 miles. Despite these challenges, I have not received any assistance from GMC with the repairs. However, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a GMC and would consider doing so again in the future.

Vehicle year: 2003
This vehicle had several issues during the two-year period, including brakes warping, bad tires, water leaks around the seals, broken receiver on seatbelt (driver's), paint peeling on the plastic bumper in circular patterns, electric lock actuator burned out (passenger side), unbalanced tires from the factory, doors misaligned from the factory, and side panel on seat broke twice because of plastic rivet mounts. Despite these issues, the dealer only provided me with a loaner car once in seventeen trips. I believe that these problems could have been avoided with better quality control during the manufacturing process.

This Safari has had a lot of maintenance work done over the years, including a transfer case problem in 4/99, a transmission solenoid replacement in 8k miles, and a transfer case replacement in 17k miles. The transmission assembly was overhauled at 21k miles, and the valve body and transmission were reconditioned at 24k miles. The vehicle requires expensive brake, transmission, and transfer case maintenance for life. In addition, there were some costly repairs, such as idler arms in 53k miles, an intake gasket in 74k miles, and an AC compressor and door lock actuators in 76k miles. Unfortunately, the engine spun a bearing and threw a rod during a family trip from NC to NY, resulting in a new engine being installed at 82k miles. Other repairs included an AC control head in 83k miles and an ignition coil and rotor in 85k miles. Despite the high cost of ownership, this Safari has been well-maintained and has never lacked for anything. The maintenance schedule has been followed and exceeded.

This vehicle has had some issues with electrical problems and battery life, but overall it has been reliable. The front end may wear tires quickly, but proper alignment can help mitigate this. It is worth noting that the front seats may be a bit snug for taller individuals. We recommend taking a test drive to ensure a comfortable fit. Thank you for considering this vehicle!
