2003 Infiniti Q45 problems
The Infiniti Q45 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured by Nissan for its Infiniti brand, spanning model years 1989-2006 and three design generations.
The first generation Q45 (1989–1999) was based on the Nissan President; the second generation (1997–2000) and third generation (2002–2006) were based on Nissan's JDM Nissan Cima. Marketing of the Q45 ended after MY 2006.
First generation (G50; 1989–1996)
The first generation Q45 came to market in 1989 as a 1990 model with a high-output 4.5 L VH45DE DOHC 32V V8 engine rated at 278 hp (207 kW) and 292 lb⋅ft (396 N⋅m) in North American trim. All Q45s included a viscous limited-slip differential and a multi-link suspension at the front and rear. At launch, the US$38,000 (equivalent to $93,000 in 2023) sedan had a single option, the Touring Package, which added Nissan's Super HICAS four-wheel steering system, a decklid spoiler, and alloy wheels.
In Japan, it was marketed as the Nissan Infiniti Q45, and was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations, as its platform twin the President was exclusive to Nissan Store locations. The G50 chassis continued in production in Japan until 2002 as the President in both regular and extended wheelbase versions. The Japanese version had many options that never appeared on the North American G50.
The contemporary upstart luxury marque Lexus (Toyota) had managed to challenge the establish dominance of European full-size luxury cars with the LS 400, so the Q45 seemed poised for similar success with comparable specifications and price to the LS 400 while featuring more emphasis upon handling. However, the Q45 did not achieve similar sales volumes, which was attributed to the car's unconventional styling, particularly the grille and lack of interior woodgrain or chrome trim. There was also an unusual advertising campaign which did not include actual photos or information about the car. By 1995, the price had risen to US$54,000 (equivalent to $108,000 in 2023), slowing sales.
In 1993 the Infiniti brand was launched in Australia with the sole model on offer being the Q45. With a price of A$140,000, the Q45 sold poorly and the brand was subsequently withdrawn from the market in 1996.

Common 2003 Infiniti Q45 problems
The INFINITI Q45, a luxury sedan produced by the Japanese automaker, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are some of the most reported issues:
- Transmission Problems: The INFINITI Q45's transmission is prone to fluid leaks or becoming noisy. Transmission issues can lead to problems like gears becoming stuck, jerking, delayed shifts, hard shifts, slipping, and shuddering. The transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles to prevent these problems.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are common in the INFINITI Q45, with recalls issued for issues such as faulty airbags, lighting, seats, wheels, and transmission. These problems can lead to malfunctions in the vehicle's safety systems, lighting, and overall performance.
- Engine Problems: The engine in the INFINITI Q45 has been known to use up engine oil from day one and may require more frequent oil changes. Additionally, the exhaust system may deteriorate over time, leading to a loss of performance and increased noise levels.
- Suspension Issues: Some owners of the INFINITI Q45 have reported a "floating feeling" when driving the vehicle. This could be due to issues with the suspension system, such as worn-out dampers, which could affect the vehicle's handling and ride quality.
It's important to note that these common problems do not necessarily affect all INFINITI Q45 vehicles, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems and ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance.

The first generation Q45 had a 4.5-liter DOHC 32-valve aluminium-alloy V8 engine, producing 278 horsepower, which took it from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds – truly outstanding at the time.
Why is my Q45 not starting?
The most common reasons an INFINITI Q45 won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

THIS PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED TO OCCUR EVERY TWO OR THREE DAYS OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS. BUT AUTO STARTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER. AUTO AND TRANSMISSION ARE NOT PERFORMING PROPERLY. THERE WAS A RECALL (INFINITI R3021) THAT ADDRESSED THESE EXACT PROBLEMS, BUT THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER CLAIMED THAT THIS CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED. THIS PROBLEM IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD AND THERE SHOULD BE SOME WAY THIS CAN BE FIXED. SIMILAR, IF NOT EXACT, COMPLAINTS FOR THIS EXACT MODEL INFINITI HAVE BEEN POSTED ON THE INTERNET WITH OWNERS INDICATING OUTRAGEOUS FRUSTRATION WITH THE INFINITI MANUFACTURER. WHEN THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS INDICATING EXACT PROBLEMS, THE FAULT CERTAINLY LAYS WITH THE MANUFACTURER. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE?

STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-06-01
- VIN: JNKBF01A03M
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: BOUGHT 2003 Q 45 IN SPRING 2007, STILL UNDER WARRANTY. JUNE 2009 AT 79,000 MILES THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED (UNDER WARRANTY). 6/30/09, 80,081 MILES CAR PROBLEM WITH NO ACCELERATION AND SERVICE ENGINE AND CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT COMING ON. PROBLEM DIDN'T REOCCUR UNTIL JUNE 2012 WHEN ENGINE SUDDENLY CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. WOULD RESTART IN NEUTRAL BUT IN A WEEK OR SO IT DID IT AGAIN ON THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 55. FORTUNATELY WAS IN RIGHT LANE AND COULD GET TO EMERGENCY LANE BEFORE SOMEONE RAN INTO ME. CAR RESTARTED. CONTINUED LIKE THIS UNTIL 6/29/12 WHEN REPAIRED, ONLY IT CONTINUED TO STOP AND THE CRUISE CONTROL/TRACTION LIGHTS WOULD COME ON AND CAR WOULD SUDDENLY STOP AND THEN SURGE FORWARD. 8/11/12 SERVICED FOR SAME PROBLEM. 8/14/12 SAME THING, CAR STOPPED THEN SURGED, THEN THE ENGINE CUT OFF AND LOST STEERING/BRAKES. INFINITI SERVICE AGAIN, THIS TIME INSTALLING NEW ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE ($ 1600). THE DEALER KEPT THIS CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND A MECHANIC DROVE IT UNTIL IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. THE MECHANIC OR SOMEONE AT INFINITI DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS A "DEATH TRAP" AND IT IS. A FEW WEEKS LATER GOING AROUND A ROUNDABOUT, THE ENGINE TURNED OFF AND LOST STEERING. PUT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTARTED. COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, ENGINE TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING. FRIDAY JUNE 7, 2013 I PULLED ONTO BUSY HIGHWAY, DROVE A MILE AND ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED. BEFORE I COULD GET IN NEUTRAL TO RESTART, A DUMP TRUCK NEARLY REAR-ENDED ME. GOT IT RESTARTED, THEN THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON, CAR STOPPED AGAIN AND THEN SURGED FORWARD. I HAVE CONTACTED INFINITI AND INTERNET SEARCHED. THERE WERE MANY INFINITIS WITH THIS PROBLEM IN THE YEARS 2002-2003, THOUGH ROSWELL INFINITI SAID THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM ON ANY INFINITI YESTERDAY. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND INFINITI ACTS LIKE THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-09-22
- VIN: JNKBF01A03M
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: MY 2003 INFINITI Q45 REPEATEDLY STALLS [SO FAR, 15+ TIMES] AND OFTEN WILL NOT RESTART [10+ TIMES]. WITH MY FAMILY AND ME IN THE CAR, THE STALLING OF THE CAR PUTS US REPEATEDLY IN JEOPARDY OF A REAR-END COLLISION OR VANDALISM OR BODILY INJURY IN DANGEROUS AREAS. THE CAR IS PROPERLY MAINTAINED ON ITS SERVICE SCHEDULE. IT TOOK MY MECHANIC A WEEK AT A COST OF $90 TO CONFIRM THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE [ECM], THE 'BRAIN' OF THE CAR WHICH CONTROLS OTHER VEHICLE SENSORS, AND THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE INFINITI DEALER AT A COST OF $150. THE ECM WAS SENT TO TEXAS FOR RECONDITIONING AND REPROGRAMMING, BUT IS BEING RETURNED BECAUSE THE ECM IS IRREPARABLE. THE COST TO BUY AND REPROGRAM A NEW ECM FROM INFINITI, THE ONLY SOURCE, IS $2000 FOR A VEHICLE WITH 100,000+ MILES. BUT A NEW ECM WILL LIKELY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THE ECM BEING REPLACED. I DO NOT WANT TO PUT MY FAMILY IN REPEATED JEOPARDY. THERE IS NO ASSURANCE THAT THE NEW ECM WILL WORK PROPERLY. I AM SUSPICIOUS THAT THE INFINITI ECMS CONTAIN NUMEROUS DESIGN FLAWS. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS, ASIDE FROM STALLING, WITH THE EXISTING ECM, INCLUDING DOOR LOCKS AUTOMATICALLY LOCKING WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION SO THAT I AM LOCKED OUT, THE LOCKS NOT UNLOCKING, ETC BOTH MY MECHANIC AND INFINITY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THESE PROBLEMS UNTIL IT BECAME CLEAR THAT I HAD A MALFUNCTIONING ECM. THERE WAS A RECENT MASSIVE RECALL OF NISSAN AND INFINITI ECMS, BUT THE INFINITI Q45 WAS EXCLUDED, EVEN THOUGH THE SYMPTOM OF REPEATED STALLING IS IDENTICAL TO MY CAR, EXCEPT THAT, WORSE, I ALSO OFTEN CANNOT RESTART THE VEHICLE. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-19
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JNKBF01A63M
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
- Summary: THE BRAKES IN THIS VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONED AND BY SUCH CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE DEALER, NISSAN OF THE EASTSIDE IN BELLEVUE WA WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX SAID BRAKES AS I NOTED THAT THEY WERE NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY IN MY TEST DRIVE OF THE VEHICLE AND I WROTE THE CONTRACT SUBJECT TO THE BRAKES BEING FIXED. WHEN THEY DIDN'T FIX THE BRAKES THEY WERE COMMITTING FRAUD AND ALSO IN BREECH OF CONTRACT.. THEY DID NOT FIX THE BRAKES AS AGREED. INFINITI OF FIFE THEN SUPPOSEDLY DID SAID BRAKE WORK. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CAR IS IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE. COME TO FIND OUT, BOTH DEALERSHIPS ARE OWNED BY THE SAME PEOPLE THUS MAKING COLLUSION TO HIDE THIS SAFETY ISSUE A VERY EASY ROAD TO TRAVEL. THE CAR IS NOW CURRENTLY OFFERED FOR SALE AGAIN AT INFINITI OF FIFE THIS TIME AND THE ACCIDENT ISN'T DISCLOSED, IN FACT THE CAR IS SAID TO HAVE A CLEAN CARFAX HISTORY. THIS CONSTITUTES FRAUD. I HAVE NOT AS YET BEEN COMPENSATED FOR MY LOSS. MY INSURANCE PAID TO FIX THIS VEHICLE WHICH THE NISSAN DEALER PROMPTLY REPO-ED (5 MINUTES AFTER I PAID TO GET IT OUT OF THE SHOP) WHEN I REFUSED TO PAY FULL RETAIL DUE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUES. THE DEALERSHIP OWNERS AND ALL INVOLVED SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP ON FELONY RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT CHARGES AS WELL AS FRAUD CHARGES. I DO EXPECT TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THIS AS WELL AS DOES MY INSURANCE COMPANY, WHICH PAID OVER $10,000 TO FIX THIS DEATH TRAP OF A CAR. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP AS I AM IN DIRE NEED OF ASSISTANCE. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-12-31
- VIN: JNKCV54EX3M
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING FUEL LINE DISCONNECTED FROM THE FUEL TANK . THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. CONSUMER MANAGED TO PULL OVER, AND HAD VEHICLE TOWED. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-03-14
- VIN: JNRBS08W53X
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I RECENTLY TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW INFINITY FX45. IT NOW HAS ABOUT 600 MILES ON IT. THE HEADLIGHTS ARE AIMED TOO LOW TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD AHEAD. VISIBILITY IS SEVERELY LIMITED TO ABOUT 2+ CAR LENGTHS AHEAD. I CANNOT MAINTAIN MINIMAL SPEED ON AN UNLIT HIGHWAY, OR WHEN OTHER CARS ARE NOT TRAVELING WITH ME. THE DEALER STATES THAT THE HEADLIGHTS ARE "WITHIN FACTOR SPEC" AND WILL DO NOTHING TO ASSIST. HE WILL NOT CHECK IT AT NIGHT; NOR WILL HE CHECK MY CAR AGAINST OTHERS IN THE SHOP OR ON THE DEALERSHIP FLOOR. THE DEALER ADDS THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ADJUST THESE LIGHTS AS THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT CAPABILITY BUILT INTO THE HEADLIGHT MODULE. THE DEALER, PEPE INFINITY, WHITE PLAINS, NY 10601, WILL NO LONGER DISCUSS THE PROBLEM WITH ME; NOR HAS ANYONE CONTACTED ME TO ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. IF I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AFTER DARK, I WANT TO GET ANOTHER CAR OR HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. INFINITY USA SAYS EXACTLY THE SAME THING. THEIR POSITION IS THAT IF INFINITY RELEASED THE CAR, IT MUST MEET ALL FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS, AND WILL DO NOTHING MORE. THEY DID AGREE TO LET ME VISIT ANOTHER INFINITY DEALER TO "INDEPENDENTLY" CHECK THE HEADLIGHTS, BUT IT WILL PROBABLY BE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. IN THE MEANTIME, THE CAR IS VIRTUALLY UNDRIVEABLE AT NIGHT UNLESS DRIVEN IN A LIGHTED AREA AND AT LOW SPEEDS. *NLM

Buy it! It's the best value for your money. You can count on its quality and reliability.

I absolutely love my Q-45! It has been such a reliable car, even after driving 16,000 mostly city miles, I still average 17.8MPG. The performance is outstanding and the comfort is fantastic. This is actually my third Infinity Q-45 and I have never had to take it in for repairs. In comparison, my friend's S class has had numerous electrical problems, my family's Lexus has had several small problems, and my BMW Z-3 was a complete disaster. While the Q-45 may not have all the bells and whistles of more expensive cars, it is definitely superior in my humble opinion.

I am thrilled to share my experience with the Q! This is actually my 5th Q and I must say, it is by far the best one yet. I opted for the premium model and added every available option, and I can honestly say that I truly love driving it. My wife and I take a 13-hour trip to Hilton Head twice a year, and I always insist on driving because I enjoy it so much. Whenever I need to service my car, I always go to Key Infiniti of Hilton Head. They are always so accommodating and go above and beyond to keep me satisfied. In my opinion, the Q is a much better choice than the S-Benz or the 740 Bimmer. Trust me, you'll fall in love with it!

Congratulations on your new 2003 Infiniti! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. Your review of the car is very helpful and informative. It's great to hear that the Q45 is the most technically advanced vehicle you've ever owned and that the voice recognition and Bose sound system are so convenient and crystal clear. Your comparison of the Q45 to other luxury cars is very insightful and it's wonderful to hear that the Q45 beat them all hands down. Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendation to give the Q45 a test drive.
Sid Collins 2024-10-06
Extremely refined car. The GPS system is great and easy to use. The sound system is also great, and the car is very comfortable. It has a great engine and very little road noise even at high speeds. It offers as much technology as a Benz S600 or BMW 760il for half the price, making it a really great value.
