The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.

Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.

Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.

During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

Common 2002 Ford Windstar problems

The 2002 Ford Windstar is known for several common problems, including starting issues, engine performance problems, transmission problems, and structural issues.

One of the most common problems with the 2002 Ford Windstar is starting issues. Many owners have reported difficulty starting the vehicle, with the engine cranking but not starting. Some owners have reported that the starter motor needs to be replaced, while others have found that the problem is caused by a faulty ignition switch or a dead battery. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a clogged fuel filter or a faulty fuel pump.

Another common problem with the 2002 Ford Windstar is engine performance problems. Some owners have reported that the engine bucks or hesitates during acceleration, especially after driving for a while. This problem is often caused by a faulty mass air flow sensor or a dirty throttle body. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a vacuum leak or a faulty oxygen sensor.

Transmission problems are also common in the 2002 Ford Windstar. Some owners have reported that the transmission slips or shifts roughly, especially when shifting from first to second gear. This problem is often caused by a low transmission fluid level or a faulty transmission solenoid. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a worn-out clutch or a damaged torque converter.

Structural issues are also a concern in the 2002 Ford Windstar. Some owners have reported that the rear axle breaks suddenly, causing the vehicle to lose control. This problem is often caused by a manufacturing defect in the rear end assembly. In some cases, the problem may be caused by worn-out suspension components or a damaged driveshaft.

In addition to these common problems, the 2002 Ford Windstar has also been the subject of several recalls. For example, a recall was issued in 2004 for a broken axle that could cause the vehicle to lose control. Another recall was issued in 2007 for a faulty fuel tank that could leak and cause a fire.

In summary, the 2002 Ford Windstar is known for several common problems, including starting issues, engine performance problems, transmission problems, and structural issues. While many of these problems can be fixed with routine maintenance or replacement parts, some may require more extensive repairs or replacement of major components. Owners of the 2002 Ford Windstar are encouraged to stay up-to-date on recalls and to address any issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-29
  • VIN: 2FMDA58432B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: The gauges are acting crazy which causes the engine to jerk or the transmission and then it starts making the lights flicker in the interior and the gauges start sticking. It seems to make the overflow on the radiator to empty more because it is causing the sensors in the electrical for the parts to go crazy and run hot. Sometimes it only does it every so often but after getting the reserve hose on the power steering that connects to the reservoir to the coolant the battery was drained. Then going after getting it charged down the highway it caused the interior lights radio and seat and turn signals not to work when coming to a complete stop and it was idling the dashboard and all the lights were coming back on once given a guess it winded up not working again causing the battery to become hot or warm and acid you can smell in the air like rotten eggs. It is causing the overflow tank of the radiator to evaporate more or come out quicker and it is causing other component parts to react strangely which I'm afraid will cause a fire in the vehicle and the idling is not correct also on it now

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-29
  • VIN: 2FMDA52442B
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: ON SATURDAY AUGUST 29, 2020 I WAS DRIVING IN MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR DOWN A ROAD THAT WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE SPEED LIMIT OF THE ROAD IS 35 MPH AND THERE IS A CURRENT BUMP IN THE ROAD AT AN ASPHALT ELEVATION CHANGE. AS SOON AS I WENT OVER THE BUMP IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SOMETHING WAS SEVERELY WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A LOUD "BANG" AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN VIBRATING WILDLY AND MAKING SEVERE NOISES. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT HAD OCCURRED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND PULL ONTO A SIDE STREET SHORTLY THEREAFTER. I EXITED THE VEHICLE AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THE REAR DRIVER-SIDE WHEEL WAS ANGLED INTO THE BODY OF THE VAN. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, PEERING UNDER THE VEHICLE IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE ACTUAL CAUSE WAS THAT THE VEHICLE'S REAR AXLE HAD FRACTURED NEARLY COMPLETELY THROUGH (SEE PICTURES). IN THIS CONDITION BOTH REAR TIRES COLLAPSED INTO THE VEHICLE FRAME. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I DISCOVERED THAT THERE HAD ALREADY BEEN RECALLS RELATED TO THE REAR AXLE ON THIS VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. AFTER THE INSPECTION, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE PREVIOUS RECALL FOR THE VEHICLE TO INSTALL BRACKETS ON THE AXLE HAD BEEN PERFORMED IN DEC 2010 AND THAT THEY HAD BEEN INSTALLED CORRECTLY. DUE TO THIS, FORD'S POSITION WAS THAT THE RECALL WAS DONE ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATIONS RELATED TO THE RECALLS AND REFUSED TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SAFETY FAILURE ON THEIR VEHICLE. I TRIED TO CONTEND THAT THE INTENT OF THE RECALL WAS TO PREVENT THE AXLE FROM FRACTURING, WHICH OBVIOUSLY THEIR PREVIOUS RECALL "FIX" DIDN'T APPROPRIATELY ACCOMPLISH. IT WAS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE TO HAVE AN AXLE FRACTURE WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE, AND FORD'S PREVIOUS RECALL "FIX" FAILED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM MAKING THE VEHICLE A HAZARD TO DRIVE.

Negative 2002 Ford Windstar car reviews

Our van has been running well for the past year, and my wife loves it. Although we have encountered a few issues, such as a strut that went bad after only a couple of months and the poor quality of the interior, we have been able to address them. The metal supports in the seats and headrest have come up through the padding, and the speaker volume cuts out in one of the sliding doors. However, we have found that the pick-up takes a few seconds of hitting the gas before it really takes off. Overall, we are confident in the performance of our van and have been able to address any issues that have arisen.

Great for the first couple of years! However, after that, it may start to wear out. Unfortunately, the electronics may start to go, and the rear wiper motor may stop working. Additionally, the trim and door hardware may start to come off, and the interior is not of the highest quality. Therefore, it may not be the best option unless you plan on keeping it for the long haul. It is important to note that it may depreciate too fast. Lastly, the gas mileage on the highway is only 20 mpg, which is not ideal.

The Windstar has some great advantages, such as excellent crash test scores and a powerful standard engine. However, there are also some disadvantages, such as a noisy engine, poor handling and components, and slightly-too-frequent trips to the dealer. Unfortunately, the Base LX model does not come with cruise control, which is a major drawback. I had to upgrade to the Standard LX model for about $3000 just to get this feature, as the other extra features were not very useful. It's disappointing that Ford chose to exclude this feature, and it may cause them to lose customers. Overall, the Windstar is an average vehicle with both pros and cons.

Although I'm not particularly fond of vans, I purchased the Windstar to accommodate my son and his family on short trips. The previous owner didn't seem to care much about keeping it clean, but with a little effort, I was able to get it looking pretty good. I paid a reasonable price for it, so I'm quite satisfied with my purchase so far. It's not the most fuel-efficient vehicle (16 mpg), but neither was the pickup truck it replaced. The grandkids absolutely adore the video player, and after I bought them headphones, it became even more enjoyable for us. While I'm still not a huge fan of vans, I must admit that I like this one as much as any other. I've always had good experiences with Ford products.

I purchased this Windstar van brand new and everything went smoothly until the warranty expired at 60,000 miles. After that, I started experiencing issues with the power steering, brakes, engine seals, rack and pinion, and warning lights not turning off. However, the biggest problem occurred at 86,000 miles when the engine fell out due to all the mounts coming loose. Unfortunately, there was so much collateral damage that it was not worth repairing and I lost trade-in value. I was charged 6.9% interest on the replacement vehicle, which was not the 0% financing advertised on TV by Ford.

Your father bought the van brand new in 2002 and drove it on rough roads for 54,000 miles while living in Montana. When you inherited it in 2005 and drove it to Florida, it never let you down. Unfortunately, it was totaled in an accident in September 2009 with 99,800 miles on it. Despite being rear-ended at 60mph, you walked away without a scratch. It was a shame that they couldn't fix it. The only issue you had with the van was the ABS lights, but there was nothing wrong with the brakes, only the light would stay on. You never had to spend any money on repairs that weren't normal maintenance.

  3. Berta Ebert 2024-10-06

My wife and I recently had some trouble with our Dodge minivan. The motor went out before the transmission failed, and in total, the van had 165,000 miles on it when we retired it. With six kids and me being let go from my job after 16 years, we were in a tough spot. Thanks to some savings from my new job at a local fast food joint, we were able to purchase a Ford Windstar from a local dealer for $1,000 about three months ago. Although my wife was worried about some rust repair that needed to be done, it didn't scare me off since we had similar issues with our Dodge and paid five times the amount for it. We got the rust fixed and the Windstar has been running well for a year now with no problems. It does have a slight ticking noise in the motor, but that seems to be common in cars with over 150,000 miles. Oh, and it had 178,000 miles on it when we bought it. We plan on keeping it for a while longer.

  4. Ted Hamill 2024-08-12

I purchased this van used and I love it. I get better mileage than I get with my husband's new Honda. My son loves climbing in and out of it. We have taken this van everywhere and it works perfectly.

  5. Allan Glover 2024-08-06

The van has only covered 6,500 miles so far and has been trouble-free, except for some dirt build-up in the manual sliding door tracks which I cleaned out twice. I also sprayed WD40 on the sliding doors to stop some squeaks, but they work perfectly now. Additionally, I noticed that the tail light was hanging out a little, so I loosened two screws and clicked it back in, which was an easy fix. The van rides very smoothly and runs perfectly. The transmission shifts perfectly and the drive train operates flawlessly with good power.
