The Hyundai Veracruz (Korean: 현대 베라크루즈), also known as the Hyundai ix55 in Europe and Russia, is a mid-size crossover that was manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 2006 to 2015. The Veracruz was sold in the United States, Canada, South Korea, China, Morocco, South America and the Middle East.

It was also imported to Europe and parts of Asia from 2007 to 2011. The Veracruz was discontinued in other countries, except South Korea. Its name refers to the Mexican state of Veracruz; however, despite being named after the Mexican state, it was never actually sold in Mexico.

History

The official date of unveiling in South Korea was October 12, 2006, and was made available in the United States as a 2007 model. The Veracruz went on sale in March 2007, and is Hyundai's largest crossover SUV.

It replaced the truck based Terracan that was sold worldwide except for North America. The Veracruz is built on a Hyundai Santa Fe platform. The revamped 2011 Veracruz was based on the same platform as the Kia Sorento.

The Veracruz gets its name from a state in Mexico, continuing the Western theme from the small Tucson SUV and mid-size Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Powering the Veracruz is a 3.8 L 260 hp (190 kW) V6 engine with an Aisin sourced six speed Shiftronic Automatic transmission.

In Europe, it was sold only with 3.0 L CRDI V6 diesel S-Line engine with Variable geometry turbocharger and 240 hp (180 kW). In 2008, the Veracruz was also sold in some European countries as the ix55.

Common 2012 Hyundai Veracruz problems

The Hyundai Veracruz, a midsize SUV produced from 2007 to 2012, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2012 Hyundai Veracruz:

  1. Excessive engine noise after cold start: Many owners have reported experiencing excessive engine noise, particularly after cold starts. This issue may be related to the engine's design or components, such as the pistons, rods, or bearings. It is unclear whether this problem is caused by a single component or a combination of factors.
  2. Harsh shifting and transmission slips: Some owners have reported experiencing harsh shifting and transmission slips, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged transmission components, low transmission fluid levels, or issues with the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU).
  3. Hesitation due to faulty oxygen sensor: A faulty oxygen sensor can cause hesitation or stalling, particularly during acceleration. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty sensor, damaged wiring, or issues with the vehicle's ECU.
  4. Oil leaks on alternator, alternator stops working, battery drains, and car stops: This issue has been reported by many owners of the 2012 Hyundai Veracruz, and it has been linked to a major recall in 2014 that affected every Veracruz and Santa Fe built between 2007 and 2012. This problem can be caused by oil leaks on the alternator, which can lead to the alternator stopping working, the battery draining, and the car stopping unexpectedly. This issue has been reported to be a safety issue, as it can cause the car to stop with very little warning.
  5. Recall issues: The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz has been subject to several recalls, including a recall for oil leaks on the alternator and a recall for a faulty brake light switch. These recalls can affect the reliability and safety of the vehicle, and they may require owners to bring their vehicles in for repairs or replacements.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by owners of the 2012 Hyundai Veracruz. It is important for potential buyers to research and consider these issues before making a purchase decision.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-17
  • VIN: KM8NUDCC7CU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This recall only replaces the front cylinder bank cover gasket, but there's oil leaking on to my engine from the other valve gasket cover too. Hyundai wants to charge me $600 to replace that. The car has stopped on the road in the middle of me driving it twice (both in March 2021) - luckily no crash as it was in a residential area. I've paid over $1000 in repairs as Hyundai didn't have a recall 'solution' despite the car not working. I'm including the receipt for the alternator replacement as well as proof of the (first - there were multiple) battery replacements before there was a 'solution'. Hyundai won't reimburse me for these.

  • Summary: On September 26, 2021 the airbag indicator light in my 2012 Hyundai Veracruz remained illuminated upon starting the vehicle. Around a day later, the airbag light stopped illuminating. Around a month later, I received a letter from Hyundai regarding a warranty extension to cover the clock spring, so I contacted my local Hyundai dealership. Tracy Hyundai indicated that the clock spring is fine, however there is a faulty passenger side occupant sensor. The fault code cleared; however this creates a safety issue as it is unknown if the front passenger airbags would deploy in the event of an accident. Tracy Hyundai indicated that Hyundai Corporation no longer makes this part so there is no available resolution. I contacted Hyundai Corporation, however they could not assist and referred me to contact the dealership.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-20
  • VIN: KM8NUDCC1CU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My vehicle was under a recall. The engine lights started going off so I immediately turned around and headed back home. By the time I got home, my vehicle was close to stalling. It would not go beyond 3rd gear and would not go into reverse. I parked it on the street in front of my home and the vehicle stalled do to a failed alternator. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer honored only part of the recall. They replaced the valve gasket/T Joint but they would not replace the alternator because "it was not oil soaked". The alternator was previously replaced under the first recall and it is clear that this second alternator failed and should have been replaced as part of this second recall. My issue is that HYUNDAI IS NOT HONORING THE RECALL. I was forced to pay out of pocket $996.94 to have my alternator replaced. I have contacted the Hyundai Customer Care Center multiple times since November 2021 regarding this issue. I'm seeking that they honor the recall by reimbursing me but they have not followed up.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-29
  • VIN: KM8nu4cc5cu
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My vehicle (2012 Veracruz) is currently under Recall Campaign #197 for Hyundai. This INCOMPLETE recall has been in place since November 2020 with NO SOLUTION PROVIDED yet as of July 2021. I have owned this vehicle for six years, and have already had to replace the alternator TWICE (2015 & 2019) due to the very same issue with the oil leak on the alternator. I 2019, my Veracruz DIED in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD when the alternator suddenly went out. I was the EXACT SERIOUS SAFETY RISK indicated in this current Recall #197. I am now the mother of a newborn baby and two year old son. This is our primary family vehicle. We ARE UNABLE to rely on it as a safe and dependable vehicle for our family because of the OPEN and INCOMPLETE recall. The dealership has told me that I have to pay out of pocket for any diagnostic and repair at this point, even if tied to the recall. (I can apply later for reimbursement.) I want Hyundai to give a time expected for a solution to this recall IMMEDIATELY or I want Hyundai/dealership to pay for any diagnostic and repair services that may be related to this recall #197 and alternator issue. This is UNACCEPTABLE. I have contacted Hyundai Customer Care and been told that since my car is out of warranty, I must pay for any diagnostic and repair for alternator issues. Again, UNACCEPTABLE when I am receiving monthly notices from Hyundai that there is a clear alternator problem and safety concern. When is the solution to this recall going to be provided? When will this company accept liability for this issue?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-01
  • VIN: Km8nudcc3cu
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: In 2018 I had to replace my alternator as it failed while at a stop light. My dash warning lights illuminated so I pulled over to the curb and turned the vehicle off. I was not able to start the car back up and had to have it towed home. I noticed that there is evidence of oil leaking again… it is over the alternator as well as other parts under the hood. I also notice oil in my driveway where I park my car. I am concerned that the alternator will fail again as Hyundai still have no remedy for the issue.

Negative 2012 Hyundai Veracruz car reviews

  1. Jarred Grant 2024-10-22

11/5/17: I recently sold my car and have decided to replace it with a Honda CRV.5/3/17: Since my previous review, I have had a few issues with my previous vehicle which had 68,000 miles on it. I had to discuss two oil leaks on two different occasions and last month the engine seized up and the dealer found metal shavings in the oil pan. I had to replace the entire engine which cost over $10,000. Although I bought my Veracruz as a 2-year-old vehicle with 20,000 miles on it, I found that there were a few things about the vehicle that will keep me from buying another Hyundai. However, I have to say that I haven't needed to have the car into the shop very often. First, the car was modeled after a Lexus RX, meaning Hyundai used the RX as the standard for the product. A few years into ownership, I received a recall from Hyundai that there was an oil leak on my car and that it had to be repaired. Although having an oil leak on a car at less than 50,000 miles is unheard of, the dealership replaced the defective gasket with the same gasket system, which proceeded to leak. Hyundai has not redesigned the defective part yet. The new gasket seems to have fixed the problem. Also, the driver seat is wearing very fast and there is a clanking noise when I put the car in reverse. I'm going to go back to my Japanese imports. While they are not perfect, I haven't experienced problems like this in 25 years of ownership of Toyotas and Hondas.

Good build quality. Not bad looking. Nice interior space. Great third row seat - adult size. Fuel economy is just as advertised. Although the seats are a little too firm, the ride is smooth. However, the shifts are too early in first, so there is no acceleration off the mark without flooring it. Additionally, the blue digital display is not easy to view and the tailgate release on the key fob is almost useless. Overall, it's a decent car with some minor drawbacks.

Good solid ride, nice interior, versatile, so-so gas mileage.

The passenger and back seat experience can be uncomfortable due to feeling every bump and pothole magnified. Additionally, the fuel economy may not meet the advertised standards.

The 2011 Veracruz limited that I purchased unfortunately had several issues, including a loud grinding and knocking sound from the brakes, which posed a safety hazard. Despite taking the car back to Hyundai five times to address the issue, the problem persisted and was not resolved. While I own another Veracruz and have driven others without experiencing this issue, the factory rep sent by Hyundai refused to take a closer look and dismissed the problem as normal. Regrettably, I had to part ways with the car to avoid any potential accidents due to brake failure. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this car.

When I was searching for an SUV, I went shopping like most consumers do. To be honest, I initially went to Volvo and liked the SUV, but it didn't have the space I needed. During the process, my daughter reminded me that I am a loyal Hyundai customer and suggested I check them out. I visited Rick Case Hyundai on a chilly day, and the salesman called me from outside, inviting me to come in and get warm while telling him what I was looking for. That evening, I drove away in my Hyundai Veracruz, and they delivered everything they promised. I absolutely adore my Hyundai, and I am grateful to Rick Case for their excellent service.

You're in for a treat! I've owned over a dozen cars in my driving life, including Lexus, Toyotas, Porsche, Corvette, Mercedes, Chevys, and Fords too. But let me tell you, this Hyundai Veracruz is something else. It's equal or even better than any of them! The fit and finish, overall performance, comfort, and amenities are all superb. I did my research and shopped around for Highlander, Venza, CX-9, Traverse (GMC and Buick also), and others, but none of them matched the performance, options, and especially the price of this car. You simply can't beat it for the money. And the options are just fantastic - power lift gate, keyless entry/start, sunroof and rack, automatic A/C everywhere, dynamite sound, power trim and tilt, seat memory, Michelins, five spoke wheels, and more. This car is a real winner!

Handles well! In town driving gets 17-19 MPG, while on the highway it gets 22. MPG could be better, but I tend to drive aggressively. There's lots of cargo room with the third row seats folded down. Although the third row seating is not comfortable for adults, my tweens have no problem with it. This vehicle has a lot to offer as standard equipment, whereas other more costly vehicles require you to pay for extras.

I'm so glad that I found this car! It's perfect for my large family and all the stuff we need to carry around. It's been a lifesaver for us!

Great vehicle! It's a shame they discontinued it, I would have bought another one. Instead, I'm considering the Santa Fe 7 passenger.
