Ford Windstar 1999 problems

The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.

Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.

Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.

During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

Common Ford Windstar 1999 problems

The 1999 Ford Windstar has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the brakes, specifically the brake fluid master cylinder. The brake fluid master cylinder is recessed and oriented in the engine compartment, making the brake fluid warning statement on the filler cap and reservoir body not entirely visible by direct view. This could lead to the vehicle not fully complying with the requirements of FMVSS No. 135, “Passenger Car Brake Systems”.

Another common problem with the 1999 Ford Windstar is transmission failure. This issue has been reported in various models of the Windstar, including the 1999, 2000, and 2003 models, with the 2003 model having the highest number of complaints at 166. The transmission failure can be caused by various factors, such as wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.

The Windstar's rear axle is also known to be problematic, with an alarming number of owners reporting that it can split apart or suddenly snap like dried kindling.

The engine is another component of the 1999 Ford Windstar that has been reported to have issues. Engine problems include sensor trouble, which can lead to various issues with the vehicle's performance and drivability.

The interior of the 1999 Ford Windstar has also been reported to have problems, with various issues such as malfunctioning interior lights and locks, and noises coming from the car.

Overall, the 1999 Ford Windstar has been reported to have various common problems, including brake issues, transmission failure, rear axle failure, engine problems, and interior issues. These problems can lead to various issues with the vehicle's performance, drivability, and safety, and can be costly to repair. It is essential to keep up with regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle's occupants.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. CONTAMINANTS SUCH AS WATER, SALT, AND WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLUTION CAN ENTER THE WIPER MOTOR COVER ASSEMBLY THROUGH PINHOLES ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE COVER THAT ARE USED IN THE MOLDING PROCESS. IN ADDITION, ON CERTAIN OF THE VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND AUGUST 2000, A SWITCH LOCATED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE WIPER MOTOR GEAR CASE COULD MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT. EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN LOSS OF INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION, LOSS OF WIPER PARK FUNCTION, COMPLETE LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION, SMOKE, OR IGNITION OF THE PLASTIC COVER MATERIAL. CONTAMINANT ENTRY COULD ALSO RESULT IN UNINTENDED WIPER MOTOR OPERATION.
  • Consequence: SWITCH MALFUNCTION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE INTERMITTENT SETTING OF THE WIPERS IS BEING USED, OR WHEN SNOW OR ICE OBSTRUCTS THE BLADES FROM RETURNING TO THE "PARKED" POSITION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. LOSS OF VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW WIPER COVER WITH IMPROVED SEALING AND WATER RESISTANCE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAIN AUGUST 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

Negative Ford Windstar 1999 car reviews

  1. Sheridan Adams 2024-11-24

Although the Windstar may not be the best car out there, it does have some positive features. The ride is pretty good and the seats are comfortable. Additionally, there is a lot of space in the back as well as the cargo area. However, it is important to note that all the very heavy rear seats have to be removed. The V6 engine is fairly powerful, but it may not be the fastest. Unfortunately, wind noise can be quite annoying in this minivan. While the Windstar should get good gas mileage, ours only averaged 14 mpg with a roof rack. Overall, the Windstar can be a good used buy, but if you have the option, you may want to consider the Honda Odyssey instead.

  2. Julian Barton 2024-11-09

The transmission went out at 30,000 miles and was rebuilt. Unfortunately, it went out again at 54,000 miles. I am disappointed that Ford is not taking full responsibility for this issue. In addition to the transmission problems, there have been other repairs and recalls. I have been trying to get in touch with the District Manager for Northeast Illinois, but have been unsuccessful so far. I hope to resolve this issue soon. Despite these challenges, I still value the safety features of my Ford.

  3. Bailey Miller 2024-11-09

I had numerous issues with my 99 Windstar from the very beginning. Despite taking it to the dealer over 25 times for various problems, such as a dead heater, malfunctioning power rear windows, a leaking windshield, a passenger door that needed to be rehung, air conditioning problems, a replaced intake manifold, a power sliding door that wouldn't close, brake issues, and running problems for the past 2 years, no one seemed to be able to fix it. Fortunately, I traded it in yesterday for a Toyota, which is a huge relief!

  4. Ole Hirthe 2024-11-01

I have driven 20,000 miles in this model and unfortunately, I have had to replace the intake manifold and wiring harness. Additionally, the vehicle shifts hard down into 2nd gear and after an oil change, there is a burning oil smell that comes out of the air vents for about a month. Although I have 15,000 miles left on the warranty and an extended power train warranty, I am disappointed that I have not had a defect-free van. On the positive side, it rides nicely and is great for kids. However, with only 21,000 miles, I am now questioning my decision not to go with the Odyssey.

  5. Horacio Little 2024-09-04

I love my wife's van! It's so versatile and perfect for hauling all sorts of things like groceries, garden stuff, and even our grandkids. Our son also uses it to take his mountain bike to all sorts of places. We've had a great experience with our dealer who is always responsive and timely with service work. While our Ford Dealer isn't quite on par with the best service we've ever experienced from our Lexus, they are not far behind. We've had no problems at all with the van since one minor fit & finish complaint at delivery, which was corrected with no hassle.

Positive Ford Windstar 1999 car reviews

  1. Reese Kling 2024-09-02

We purchased this van at a great price because it had been sitting on the dealer's lot for around a year. As a family of five, my wife and I decided we needed a van, and having driven a rental Windstar before, I was already a fan. We've always had good experiences with Fords, and this van was no exception. It runs surprisingly quietly and smoothly, and the base engine provides both good power and mileage. We've had a few minor issues, such as with the radio and a minor paint problem, but the dealer service has been excellent in addressing them.

  2. Thaddeus Morar 2024-06-04

This mini van is perfect for the whole family, offering a comfortable ride that's great for long trips. While the 3.8 Liter, 200 hp engine and 26 gallon tank are impressive, heavy cargo may require a bit more pep. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, but there's always room for improvement. When driving locally, I typically get around 400 miles to the tank.

  3. Rick Satterfield 2024-04-04

I wouldn't trade this van for the world. The price was a bit higher, but the SEL is more of a luxury van than a mini van. Everyone compliments me on the van, and I've had no problems to date. I absolutely love it.

  4. Nathanael Stoltenberg 2024-03-24

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It sounds like you got a great deal on your baby, even though you had to replace the transmission at around 100K. It's great to hear that it's been a total workhorse for you and that it's still going strong at 150K. It's also good to know that the 3.0 V6 engine option has been working well for you and that you're getting around 20 mpg. We hope you get to enjoy it for another couple of years!

  5. Seth Hermann 2024-02-11

Excellent car for a family. It's very reliable and we've had great fun taking it on many trips. The riding experience is smooth and feels like a newer car. Overall, we are very satisfied with it.
