Ford Windstar 2001 problems
The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.
Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.
Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.
During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

- Consequence: FAILURE OF THIS CONNECTION COULD LEAD TO FUEL SPILLAGE AND, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: UFI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE FILTERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 4, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT UFI FILTERS USA AT 800-230-5876.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SEATS:MID/REAR ASSEMBLY
- Summary: CERTAIN MINIVANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEM." DURING TESTING, A THIRD ROW BENCH FLOOR-TO-SEAT LATCH RELEASED BEFORE THE STRENGTH REQUIREMENT WAS MET. IDENTICAL LATCHES ARE USED IN THE SECOND ROW OF SEATS.
- Consequence: IF THE LATCHES ON TH4E SECOND OR THIRD ROW SEATS OF THE VEHICLE RELEASE IN A CRASH, THE POTENTIAL FOR OCCUPANT INJURY IS INCREASED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT-TO-FLOOR LATCHES ON THE SECOND AND THIRD ROW OF SEATS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 21, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: TRAILER HITCHES
- Summary: IN SOME MINIVANS, WATER AND OTHER CONTAMINANTS (DIRT, SALT, ETC.) CAN ENTER INTO THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DUE TO A MISSING BODY SEALER.
- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AT THE REAR WIRE HARNESS. A SHORT CIRCUIT CAN LEAD TO MALFUNCTIONS OF THE REAR LIGHTING SYSTEM, REVERSE PARK-AID SYSTEM, OR TRAILER TOW ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. A SUSTAINED SHORT CIRCUIT CAN RESULT IN MELTED CONNECTORS AND POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AND SURROUNDING AREA FOR ABSENCE OF BODY SEALING AND CORROSION. IF CORROSION IS PRESENT, DEALERS WILL SERVICE THE BODY GAPS, REPAIR CORRODED CONNECTORS, AND APPLY A PROTECTIVE PATCH TO THE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY AND BODY HOLE. IF CORROSION IS NOT PRESENT BUT THE BODY SEALER IS MISSING, DEALERS WILL SERVICE THE BODY GAPS AND APPLY A PROTECTIVE PATCH TO THE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY AND BODY HOLE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 5, 2002. - Components: EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:AIR CONDITIONER
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS EQUIPPED WITH AUXILIARY REAR AIR-CONDITIONING. IF THE AUXILIARY AIR-CONDITIONING BLOWER MOTOR STOPS TURNING WHILE IN THE MEDIUM-LOW BLOWER SPEED SETTING, THERE IS THE POTENTIAL THAT THE RESISTOR MAY BECOME HOT AND SMOKE.
- Consequence: THE MOTOR COULD POTENTIALLY CATCH ON FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A JUMPER WIRE THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE MEDIUM-LOW BLOWER SPEED SETTING IS PROTECTED BY THE THERMAL LIMITER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGSUT 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. CONTAMINANTS SUCH AS WATER, SALT, AND WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLUTION CAN ENTER THE WIPER MOTOR COVER ASSEMBLY THROUGH PINHOLES ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE COVER THAT ARE USED IN THE MOLDING PROCESS. IN ADDITION, ON CERTAIN OF THE VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND AUGUST 2000, A SWITCH LOCATED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE WIPER MOTOR GEAR CASE COULD MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT. EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN LOSS OF INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION, LOSS OF WIPER PARK FUNCTION, COMPLETE LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION, SMOKE, OR IGNITION OF THE PLASTIC COVER MATERIAL. CONTAMINANT ENTRY COULD ALSO RESULT IN UNINTENDED WIPER MOTOR OPERATION.
- Consequence: SWITCH MALFUNCTION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE INTERMITTENT SETTING OF THE WIPERS IS BEING USED, OR WHEN SNOW OR ICE OBSTRUCTS THE BLADES FROM RETURNING TO THE "PARKED" POSITION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. LOSS OF VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW WIPER COVER WITH IMPROVED SEALING AND WATER RESISTANCE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAIN AUGUST 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

This vehicle is such a smooth ride! It's incredibly comfortable, with plenty of legroom in the back seat and lots of space. It's also really nice to have privacy glass.

We absolutely adore this vehicle! It has exceeded our expectations in every way. Although we have encountered a few minor issues with the interior, such as a headrest needing some upholstery attention and a light switch requiring some fixing, my husband was able to easily resolve the latter with his trusty pocket knife while riding as a passenger. This car is perfect for long trips with the kids, and we have taken it on over six 1000+ mile trips in the last 19 months.

Over the past 4 years of owning this car, we have unfortunately had to spend over $3500 on repairs. This includes $1200 for an intake manifold issue that caused oil leakage, which I also noticed mentioned in a review on this website. A few months later, we had to replace the engine at a cost of $2500, with Ford covering half of the cost. Now, we are faced with the need to replace the ABS computer brain that controls the hydraulics for the brakes, which will cost $1200. However, the dealership has been very friendly and offered to work with us on this repair, as well as providing us with the option of purchasing another car with them, such as a Freestar. Although I am disappointed that we have had to spend $5000 on repairs for a car with less than 85k miles, I appreciate the dealership's efforts to help us out.

My wife and I recently became proud owners of a minivan. We were pleasantly surprised by the smooth ride of the Windstar and decided that we valued safety and comfort over cornering ability. We have no regrets about our decision as the Windstar provides ample power, great visibility, and minimal road noise. Whether we're running errands or embarking on a long journey, we feel confident and comfortable in our new vehicle.

The Windstar is a reliable and safe vehicle with a powerful 3.8 V-6 engine. Although the transmission can be a little rough at times, it is still a solidly built car. I was able to take advantage of the 0% financing for 60 months, which helped me make the decision to purchase it. As a Ford enthusiast, I prefer their vehicles over most GM models and I have concerns about the reliability of Chrysler/Dodge cars. (Caravans used to have a reputation for early transmission failures.)

The rear fan for A/C and heating seems to go out every year, costing $100 each time. That can be tough on the wallet! After 100,000 miles, the transmission gave out and cost $2800 to repair. Now, the A/C compressor has locked up and will cost $750 to fix. It seems like this van requires a lot of maintenance. Additionally, there have been some issues with dust on the auto door locks, which may be due to poor engineering. I am now considering higher quality vehicles and saying goodbye to Ford. I hope they continue to do well, but it's time for me to explore other options.

I purchased my Ford brand new and have always taken great care of it. Unfortunately, I have experienced several recalls and at 65K miles, the rear axle cracked in half due to rust from the inside, costing me 1K to fix. Just three months later, the transmission failed and I had to replace the radiator, resulting in a total cost of 3,800. Today, I had to take it in again because the radio wouldn't turn off, causing the battery to die. The mechanic informed me that I need an additional 500K for a new fuse box and to patch a leak. I will be picking it up on Monday and plan to trade it in for a Toyota. I have had some negative experiences with Ford in the past, including my last Ford having to be towed out of my driveway at 80K miles and my husband's Ford needing a new engine at 55K miles. Despite this, I have learned a valuable lesson and will be moving on to a new brand. Thank you for your understanding.

We purchased the vehicle used with 71K miles. Unfortunately, as we drove off the lot, the engine light came on. However, the dealership we bought it from was able to fix it, not just once, but twice. We did experience some minor issues such as the sliding door sticking or not unlocking, the passenger door lock sticking, and the rubber between the doors coming off. Recently, we took a 700-mile vacation and on our way back, while driving up major mountains in Southern OR, the transmission at 82k miles literally dropped. Overall, I have always been happy with Ford, but this experience has left me a bit disappointed. Despite this, I would still consider purchasing from them again.

Well, I recently purchased a van and unfortunately, after only two months and 17,000 miles, the transmission failed. This isn't the first time I've had transmission issues with a Ford van, as it seems to happen every time I take a trip. Currently, my new van is in the shop getting a new transmission, so I'm driving a rental car. Interestingly, even the rental car, which is also a Ford, sounds like its transmission is about to fail. Thank you.

Although we have experienced some issues with our Windstar, I am confident in its overall performance and reliability. We have taken it in for a few repairs and recalls, but I trust that these were isolated incidents and that the vehicle will continue to serve us well.
