2009 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-03
  • VIN: 1FTYR10D19P
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY PARENTS 2009 FORD RANGER HAS HAD AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. WE TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS NOT WORKING. THEY INSTALLED IT AND IT DIDN'T RESOLVE THE PROBLEM! ON DAY TWO, THEY CAME UP WITH A NEW DIAGNOSIS THAT THE TONE/EXCITER RING WAS DAMAGED BY A PREVIOUS MECHANIC/BRAKE JOB. THE TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 35,000 MILES. THEY WANTED ANOTHER $400 TO REPLACE THE TONE RING. I DECLINED BECAUSE IT WAS WAY TOO MUCH MONEY AFTER PAYING $300 FOR THE SENSOR. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T WARRANTY THEIR WORK, AFTERWARDS, I BEGAN TO RESEARCH FORD BRAKE ISSUES, AND SPECIFICALLY ABS & TONE RING ISSUES. IT TURNS OUT, THAT AFTER LOOKING AT VARIOUS YOUTUBE VIDEOS, FORD FORUMNS, ARTICLES, ETC. I LEARNED THAT FORD HAS HAD SIGNIFICANT ABS ISSUES ESPECIALLY IN 2008 AND 2009. EVEN MORE INTERESTING WAS THE FACT THAT MANY MODELS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS (FOCUS AND ESCAPE) AND HAVE MAY HAVE BEEN RECALLED. NOT 100% SURE, BUT THE RANGER HAS NOT. BASICALLY, THE TONE RING IS ATTACHED TO THE WHEEL HUB/AXLE AND SPINS WITH THE TIRE. THIS CREATES A MAGNETIC FIELD WHEREIN THE SENSOR DETERMINES THE SPEED OF THE WHEEL. IF THE TONE RING IS DAMAGED, THE SENSOR SENDS VARIOUS ERROR CODES TO THE ECM AT WHICH POINT THE ABS BRAKE WILL DISENGAGE THE BRAKES ON THE WHEEL AFFECTED. AND THEN IT WILL ENGAGE THE BRAKES, AND REPEAT THIS UNTIL THE VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP. ESSENTIALLY, THE ABS SYSTEM OVERRIDES THE BREAK PEDAL AND YOU LOSE BRAKING ABILITY ON THAT WHEEL. NOT ONLY THAT, WITH MY VEHICLE, THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS HAVE NEVER COME ON; EVEN AFTER THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR. THE VEHICLE IS GETTING WORSE. AT EVERY STOP IT'S MAKING NOISES AND IT'S HARDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AS I SAID EARLIER, THE THEORY IS THE CORROSION OF THE AXLE IS BREAKING THE RING, WHICH IS ANOTHER NON RUSTING METAL, I'M PRETTY SURE THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT EXAMINE THE RING. HELP!!!!

Negative 2009 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Cristopher Okuneva 2025-01-05

The car's performance is commendable. However, after 6,000 miles, an annoying rattle developed in the passenger side of the dash, which the dealer was unable to locate. Unfortunately, the vehicle began to rust after 5-6 months, with a few spots on the body, through the paint, and some painted spots under the bed and inside the wheels. Although I live at the beach, my 1996 Jeep Cherokee, which was 8 years old when I moved there, took 3 to 4 years to start rusting, and my girlfriend lived in the Keys for 20 years and never had issues with her 3 Hondas. This is unacceptable, particularly since Ford claims that their quality is on par with Honda and Toyota. Regrettably, the warranty does not cover this issue.

  2. Wilton Stokes 2024-06-03

Although my truck is built cheaper than my 2000 Ranger, I have experienced some issues with rattles and squeaks from day one. Additionally, it shakes and runs roughly, causing the body and seat to shake, even while driving at all speeds. Despite these concerns, the dealership has informed me that this is within the 'normal' range. While my gas mileage is about 19 1/2, which is lower than the 21-26 range I was hoping for, I am confident that this is still a reliable vehicle. Although the radio quality is not as good as my 2000 Ranger's, I am still satisfied with my purchase overall. While I have had some issues, I believe that this truck is still a good investment for those in the market for a new vehicle.

  3. Kim Skiles 2024-04-07

Although my Ranger is a recent model, I must say that it does not seem to be a significant improvement over cars from decades past. However, I did manage to get it at a great price due to the maximum rebate. It is important to note that a low price does not necessarily equate to poor design, quality, or workmanship. Unfortunately, my car did have some initial issues, and one of them was debatable in terms of whether it was covered under the 2-year/24,000-mile warranty.

Positive 2009 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Jermain Nader 2024-10-25

Very nice truck! I'm so glad I chose this pickup. It feels light and new, and I'm extremely happy and satisfied with my purchase. For the mileage and price, it's definitely worth it. Thank you so much!

Hi there! You're the best of the best!

  3. Adan Hills 2024-09-18

I recently purchased a 2009 Ranger XLT supercab automatic with the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine, AC, power windows, and CD player. Despite reading some average to poor reviews on the Ranger, I found it to be a great low-cost commuter and multi-purpose vehicle. It has exceeded my expectations with its acceptable acceleration, excellent fuel economy for a truck at 24 mpg average for 60/40 highway/city, and good build quality that Ford is now known for. I am thoroughly impressed! By the way, my other car is a Mercedes Benz C350.

  4. Torey Windler 2024-09-02

I've driven 4,000 miles on my 4-cylinder manual and I'm consistently getting 28mpg. Although it bounces a lot, it has excellent handling and surprisingly good acceleration, especially when empty. It's also easy to park in tight spaces and fits comfortably in my garage. The front seat is very comfortable and easily accessible, even for my handicapped sister. However, it's not the best choice if you frequently have more than one passenger, even with the jump seat. If you're looking for a small truck that gets good mileage and can handle a lot of abuse, this is the perfect choice. It's the only truly small truck remaining and Ford should market it as such, giving it a niche of its own in today's market.

  5. Scottie Goyette 2024-08-15

I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with your truck even after driving it for 26,000 miles! It's great to know that it runs and rides smoothly. Comparing it to your previous S-10 with a 4.3 V6, it seems like the Ranger is a much better truck overall. The Ranger feels like a bigger truck and I'm sure it's a pleasure to drive. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
