2019 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2019 Ford Ranger problems

The 2019 Ford Ranger is a compact pickup truck that has been praised for its modern design and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. One of the most widely reported issues with the 2019 Ford Ranger is with the model's transmission system.

Another common problem reported by drivers is with the engine on their Ford Ranger. It can be difficult to diagnose the exact problem with your car's engine by yourself, as many of the symptoms of different engine problems can be very similar. These symptoms commonly include the check engine light illuminating, a smoking exhaust, frequent overheating, and decreased fuel economy just to name a few. That’s why it’s crucial that you get the fault checked out by a specialist as soon as possible. The average quote for an engine repair on the Ford Ranger is £347.08 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

Some drivers have also experienced problems with the fuel injector on their Ford Ranger. The most common symptoms of a faulty fuel injector are a misfiring engine, the check engine light illuminating, and rough idling. These problems are most commonly caused by your fuel injector becoming clogged or dirty. That’s why it’s so important that a trained specialist checks out your car for you to diagnose the problem correctly. Luckily if you do have this problem, a fuel injector replacement is relatively inexpensive. The average quote for a fuel injector replacement on the Ford Ranger is £168.56 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.

Despite these common problems, the Ford Ranger is designed to be an extremely tough and sturdy vehicle, with the model securing five out of five stars in the Euro NCAP 2012 crash test. However, Ford placed a disappointing 25th out of 29 places in Car Buyer’s 2021 Driver Power survey for car brands, suggesting that the automaker still has large room for improvement with drivers.

In summary, the 2019 Ford Ranger is a reliable and sturdy vehicle, but like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. The most widely reported issue is with the model's transmission system, with symptoms including transmission fluid leaks, problems in changing gears, a slipping or dragging clutch, and a burning smell in your car. Other common problems include issues with the engine and fuel injector. It's crucial that you get any faults checked out by a specialist as soon as possible to avoid any further engine issues. Despite these common problems, the Ford Ranger is still a popular and highly-selling model, with many drivers praising its design, fuel efficiency, and reliability.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-20
  • VIN: 1FTER1FH6KL
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I took this vehicle in on 5-19-2020 for recall (19543/NSTSA Recall 19V-839). Local dealership removed skid plate, inspection/pass. Over the next 3 yrs. the p/u was taken in because of battery drainage & then battery replacement. May 2024 it was taken in as all the rear lights stopped working (exactly what was stated in the recall letter would happen). Was told at the time that the topper, which a very reputable dealer put on, did the wiring wrong so I was charged over $1300 for repairing the wiring. The topper was put on in 2019, recall was 2020, and nothing was found then. An inspection was done and not replacement of rear lights wiring. I came very close to several rear-end collisions as I hadn't realized no rear lights in May 2024. Now, I'm getting "System Off to save battery. Please turn ignition off or start engine" again on the console. I've contacted Ford at Dearborn and was referred back to local dealership and they have given me the run around. I was in a week and half ago to show them all the paperwork, was told they'd look it over and give me a call. I've heard nothing. I'm upset that the recall work wasn't done in 2020 but had to pay for the same work to be done in 2024. Since the work done in May 2024 really didn't handle the battery being drained, I'd like a new pickup as this one seems to be a lemon, or the dealership isn't doing what they said they did. I have paperwork, but it wouldn't scan onto document.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 1FTER4FH9KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In the past 3 months, my 2019 Ford ranger has had a multitude of issues come up all at once. First, my transmission destroyed a gear and needed to be rebuilt. Next was an engine misfire code that Ford detected, and ended up being spark plugs at 66k miles. The current issue is that my fan clutch failed, causing it to rip off the wiring harness that was nearby that led to the oil pressure sensor. This caused an instant loss in power on the highway and almost caused an accident. This truck has been given servicing on every mileage checkpoint that it was suppose to.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that there was a misfire in the engine. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that there was water build up in the spark plug wells, and there were signs of corrosion on electrical component. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact about Technical Service Bulletin Number: 23-2011 and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
  • VIN: 1FTER4FH9KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transmission is in signs of failure. Ford is offering updates to the computer to attempt to remedy the issue. Very similar behavior across all models with this family of 10 speed transmissions. Discouraging for owners just coming out of warranty. TSBs show Ford knows of these issues. No warning lights, violent shifting and worse yet when the vehicle is cold the shift will be missed and make it extremely dangerous when merging into traffic. I feel like I am about to be rear ended every day leaving work. There is no way these transmissions are 'okay' or that this is considered the 'new-norm' that the Ford Dealer is pushing. I have some dash cam footage that I shared with Ford (and on my personal youtube account).

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: 1FTER4FH4KL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Apparently the heater box in the 2019 Ranger is prone to warping. This leads to malfunctions in the heat/ac in the cabin. They tell me if I don’t get it replaced I could wind up getting ac instead of heat. This would be a real problem in winter weather, as I may not be able to keep the windshield clear without heat. I saw many complaints about this happening to owners of the 2019 Ford Ranger. The fix is to remove the dashboard to install a new box at a cost of 2200.00, according to the Ford dealership I bought the truck from.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: 1FTER4EH4KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There is insufficient shielding to prevent water from reaching the top of the engine. This results in water dripping on the coil packs and also entering the spark plug wells, causing loss of spark and reduced engine output. Over time, this issue also leads to rust in the engine head, potentially resulting in engine failure. Additionally, water can reach the EGR DPFE sensor, causing the engine to hesitate and shutter at various speeds. Both of these issues together cause a misfire when applying the accelerator and will cause the vehicle to initially hesitate then surge forward. Even with the engine cover, the venting at the base of the windshield allows water to drip down on the engine head, causing the above issues. Ford does recognize that there is an issue and have written several TSBs on the it.

I am disabled and live in South Carolina where is over 100° so it is a safety issue my truck should be on the recall the dealer should fix it how do I get this taken care of

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • VIN: 1FTER4EH9KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The check engine light illuminated after leaving residence and traveling less than 5 miles. Had the vehicle check by a certified ASE mechanic, He stated that my vehicle had a misfire code (PO300), if it was a PO301 OR PO302 or etc, it would indicate a specific coil was misfiring, but the PO300 is a general misfire code. Vehicle is jerking, pulling, bogging down as if doesn't want to go forward or is losing power, mechanic changed the spark pulls the first time thinking it was time due to mileage of the vehicle, and cleared the code. One week later check engine light is back on with the same PO300 code, he says we can try changing the coils next to see if this fixes the problem. I called my local ford dealer, who says the will charge me $167 dollars to diagnose the problem, and tell me whats wrong. After I have already told them what the problem is and what the code is for the problem. Which is the same code i got from my $40 code reader is the same code he got from his $1500 code reader, so what can the tell me for $ 167 that i dont already know and have told them, and from further research on recalls for this vehicle, I have found that they already know this problem exist. Ford should be responsible for repairing this know issue of engine misfires before someone dies from this engine shutting down while driving and causing a fatality on the highway.

The truck will buck and bang jolting the passengers and appear to stall out without any warning. This has happened on numerous occasions and has even stalled out in the middle of a very busy intersection almost causing a collision by the truck not having enough power to coast through the intersection. Based on conversations with the dealership, this is not an isolated issue with our vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
  • VIN: 1FTER4FH9KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2019 Ford Ranger (Lariat) has as what I've discovered is a habitual problem that many other Ford Ranger owners are experiencing. While driving at lower speeds (28-40 mph) the trucks transmission will begin to knock and buck very hard. I've noticed, according to the gear indicator, that it is in either 7th or 8th gear. The problem has gotten consistently worse and I'm in fear of greater damage to the mechanics, or worse, a potential accident if it completely gives out while driving. - The truck has not had any modifications what-so-ever that would have in any way affected the transmission.

  • VIN: 1FTER4FH6KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: [XXX] my transmission, went out on my 2019 Ford Ranger 4 x 4. I was driving on the interstate in Houston, TX during the Friday afternoon rush-hour, when I completely lost power. It was very difficult to get off the interstate due to the traffic. I had experienced some transmission issues in the week before it failed there had been some jerking, hesitation, and the truck would lurch forward when accelerating from a stopped position and while driving there was harsh shifting. I had checked the transmission fluid and it was normal. There were no warning messages prior to it going out. I had the truck towed to a Ford dealership where I was told the transmission was still under warranty. It took the dealership nine weeks to repair the transmission. It is now one year later, and I have just started experiencing the same harsh shifting on the interstate, jerking and hesitation. • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inline connector for loose terminals and replace the connectors, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 5, 2020. A renotification was sent on July 10, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S43.

  • Consequence: An electrical short can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the HVAC blower motor production date, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 4, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S34.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Ranger vehicles. The fasteners that attach the transmission shifter cable bracket to the transmission may loosen allowing the transmission to be in a different gear than indicated by the gear shift lever position.
  • Consequence: If the gear shift lever position does not match the actual transmission gear, the vehicle may move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, despite selecting 'Park', if the parking brake is not applied before the vehicle is exited, the vehicle may roll. Either scenario increases the risk of crash or injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten the transmission shift cable bracket fasteners as necessary, and verify the proper transmission shift operation, free of charge. The recall began July 1, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S15.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Ranger vehicles equipped with 10-speed automatic transmissions. In some of these vehicles, the transmission shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position without the key in the starting system and without depressing the brake pedal. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection."
  • Consequence: If the vehicle can be shifted out of Park without the brake applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move. Unintentional vehicle movement can increase the risk of injury or crash.
  • Remedy: Ford has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and repair the transmission floor shift selector interlock assembly, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 22, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C02.

Negative 2019 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Lorenzo Schneider 2024-10-25

So far with 4000 miles on the truck I really like it with one exception. Unfortunately, the electrical system has had my new Ranger in the shop 6 times in 6 months. I hope the dealer can find and fix the problem soon.

  2. Shaun Bernier 2024-09-06

The Ranger was purchased in December 2019, and unfortunately, it has spent a considerable amount of time in the shop. The HVAC box has been replaced twice, and there have been issues with the fuel pump and engine bay knocking noise. Additionally, the body panels are quite thin and the transmission can be clunky. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in the Ranger's potential and are committed to addressing these issues. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work towards improving the Ranger's performance and comfort.

I bought my 2019 Ranger (Lariat) in June 2019 and have put on 20,000 miles in the past year. Recently, I took it in for its second oil change. Unfortunately, earlier this year, I experienced an unexpected issue where the motor started chugging and warning lights flashed on my dash. I contacted the dealership and they investigated, finding the problem to be the throttle body which they replaced. During this oil change, I requested that they clean out the throttle body to prevent it from getting gummed up again. However, I experienced the same issue within 10 miles of the dealership. The dealership has had my truck for a week but has not yet found the root cause. I'm hoping for a resolution soon, but overall, I've had a good experience with my Ranger.

I've owned this truck for 11 months now and I feel like I can give it a proper review. The powertrain is definitely a 5/5. The 4-cylinder eco boost mated to the 10-speed transmission is wonderful. It provides plenty of power, speed, and towing in a small package. It also has plenty of get-up-and-go when merging onto the interstate. Additionally, it performs really well on rural dirt and gravel roads, which is where mine spends most of its time. However, I have had some negative experiences with the accessories and features, which I would rate 1/5. In the time I've had this truck, I've had issues with the safety features that set my truck into limp mode. It took two trips to the dealership to fix it. I've also had issues with the front radar picking up ghosts and the truck going nuts and beeping out of nowhere. The radio's volume knob broke and stopped working after just 6 months, which was very disappointing. After 11 months, the vent actuator broke, so my AC and heat run at the same time. There are some other minor issues I've had, but they're not worth listing. Overall, I feel like all my time and money was spent on the powertrain and the mechanics of the truck. They made the interior and accessories as cheap as possible, which is disappointing considering the truck cost $30,000.

It's unfortunate that Ford missed the mark on this one. While the 2.3 performed well and the exterior looks great, the interior left something to be desired. During my test drive of the Ranger Lariat, I was expecting a fully loaded experience, but was disappointed to find only 4-way power seats (without recline), a small armrest (not comfortable for most men), and no sunroof available. While some may see these as minor details, at a price point of $40K for a small truck, I believe they are important. Overall, the interior gave off a cheap and low-budget feeling.

Positive 2019 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Zane Boyer 2024-11-16

Great truck for the $’s. It's very comfortable and well-appointed. The adaptive cruise control and lane keeping are very good. The sound system ROCKS! I was surprised at the performance of the 2.3l Turbo, it WILL move out when needed.

  2. Devonte Johns 2024-11-02

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share how much I love my truck. It's not only handsome, but also very functional. The interior feels like a luxury car, which is a great bonus. I appreciate how it handles like a truck, which is exactly what I was looking for when I bought it!

  3. Melvina Hayes 2024-10-26

I test drove every mid-size truck on the market and let me tell you, this one is the clear winner. It's so good that I didn't even wait for rebates or incentives before buying it. I challenge you to test drive a Tacoma TRD and then check out the Ranger. You'll see why I handed over my money.

  4. Jo Mayert 2024-10-22

This is a fantastic truck with a lot of power, a quiet cabin, and plenty of head- and leg-room. The Lariat model offers cutting-edge tech options and a terrific sound system. The only downside I experienced was with the stock shocks, which resulted in a rough and bouncy ride. However, Ford now offers a Ford-branded Fox two-inch leveling kit that improves the approach and crossover angles, elevates the cabin, and smooths out the ride. With this kit, the ride is now controlled and comfortable in ordinary driving. Keep in mind that you may need to spend an additional c. 2,000 bucks to cure the Ranger

  5. Gayle Doyle 2024-10-13

I completely agree that the Ranger is an excellent truck. It has a solid build, plenty of power, and fantastic off-road technology. In my opinion, it blows away the Tacoma and the GM twins. I also appreciate the tight turning radius and the unmatched safety and technology features that Ford offers. While the MSRP on the Ranger may be high, it's worth noting that you can often negotiate a better price. I was able to pick up my new Ranger for a great deal, which made it even more affordable than the Tacoma. Additionally, I appreciate that the Ranger is made with mostly American parts, including U.S. Steel, American Axle and drive shaft, and an engine made in Cleveland, Ohio. The transmission parts are from Sharonville, Ohio, and the transmission is built in Livonia, Michigan, and assembled in Michigan. The body panels are manufactured by AK Steel and the stamping plant is in Detroit. Overall, the Ranger is a tough truck built in the USA that I would highly recommend to anyone in the market for a new vehicle. I've owned mine for a year now and have had zero problems or issues. In fact, the gas mileage has actually improved, making it the best truck I've ever owned!
