2010 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2010 Ford Ranger problems

Based on the information gathered from the sources provided, here are some common problems reported by owners of the Ford Ranger 2010:

  • Leak in Crankshaft Seal:
    • Many Ford Ranger generations have experienced problems with a seal around the crankshaft, causing oil drips. This issue may stem from a damaged valve cover gasket or a faulty oil pan. The crankshaft seal undergoes significant stress, making it prone to wear and tear, resulting in oil leaks.
  • Engine Problems:
    • Common engine issues include turbo failure and engine crank damage, leading to excessive overheating, dark smoke from the exhaust, and a decrease in fuel economy. These engine problems can significantly impact the performance of the vehicle and should be addressed promptly by a mechanic to prevent further damage.
  • Crankshaft Sensor Failure:
    • The crankshaft sensor is responsible for reading the engine's RPM and position, crucial for fuel injection regulation. Failure of this sensor can result in reduced fuel efficiency, engine misfires, sluggish acceleration, and even difficulty starting the vehicle. Prompt diagnosis and replacement of a faulty crankshaft sensor are essential to maintain the car's performance.
  • Fuel Injector Problems:
    • Issues with the fuel injector can lead to an imbalance in air and fuel supply, causing engine stalling, rough idling, misfires, decreased fuel economy, and erratic movements of the Tachometer needle. A clogged or dirty fuel injector can significantly affect engine performance, especially in off-road conditions, necessitating replacement by a trained mechanic.

These common problems with the Ford Ranger 2010 highlight various issues that owners may encounter, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any symptoms to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

Negative 2010 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Marcus Zboncak 2024-07-07

I drove a 1991 Mazda B2200 for 238,000 miles and decided to upgrade to a new truck. After some research, I settled on the Ford, which is supposed to be similar to Mazda. While the Mazda had 94 horsepower, the Ranger claims 148. However, on the same trip I have driven a hundred times with the Mazda, the Ranger couldn't pull the same hills without slowing down. It has higher gearing so it can't pull like the Mazda did. On some sections of bad road, it handles poorly, and the quality is a bit sloppy. I noticed burrs on the door handles, steering wheel, and emergency brake lever. Additionally, the cover on the steering wheel that covers the airbag has a gap that caught my coat sleeve button, which is not ideal.

  2. Sigmund Bradtke 2024-07-01

The frame of my Ford rusted out in just six years, despite having less than 50,000 miles on it. This experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Ford in the future.

  3. Cyril Deckow 2024-06-15

It's surprising that Ford Motor Co hasn't been able to build a high-quality Ranger truck despite having built the same model for several years. Unfortunately, many of these trucks (4 cyl) vibrate, which can be felt in the steering wheel, during acceleration, and throughout the ride. However, it's worth noting that some trucks don't vibrate at all. It's disappointing to learn that Ford is aware of this issue but only sends out a notice to dealers with a couple of plates to stabilize the engine. It's clear that the quality of workmanship at Ford (USA) and the Ford Motor Company needs improvement.

  4. Jamey Hayes 2024-05-23

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ranger and ask for your thoughts. I recently took my Ranger to a dyno shop in Sacramento and it produced 124 peak horsepower, which seems about right considering the power loss from the drive train. However, I've noticed that the Ranger doesn't seem to pull hills as well as my 1991 Mazda truck did, even though they both get 27.5 miles per gallon. It's surprising that Ford hasn't made more progress in the past 19 years to improve gas mileage. Additionally, I was disappointed that Ford chose to make the bed shorter, which makes it difficult to fit larger items. I even had to purchase a Ford bedliner, which unfortunately doesn't fit items that are six feet long. What are your thoughts on this?

  5. Rogelio Schroeder 2024-04-25

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my new truck. It's affordable and has great mileage, which is perfect for my daily commute and occasional loads. The fit and finish are impressive, and while the front ride is a bit too soft for my liking, it's still a great ride. The styling is a bit dated, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. With the 4.10 gears, this truck could have been a cult classic if it had a 6-speed. The NVH of the motor could be better, but the 2.3 aluminum block Duratec design is 9 years old and not too bothersome. Shifting and clutching are smooth and intuitive, making for a pleasant driving experience. Thank you for letting me share!

Positive 2010 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Nolan Lockman 2024-11-08

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Ford Ranger. I bought it used in November, and it was previously a city vehicle with 52000 miles on it. I really love the long bed, which is perfect for my needs. Since purchasing it in May 2019, I've made some upgrades, including replacing the shocks, tires, and brakes with drilled/slotted discs, as well as upgrading to all LED lighting and a better stereo. The difference is amazing! Despite being a 4 cylinder, the truck has a lot of power, and I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent gas mileage. I'm quite tall at 6'5

  2. Samir Hauck 2024-10-27

I'm so glad to hear that you love the small truck! It's a shame that they stopped making them, isn't it?

  3. Lucious DuBuque 2024-10-20

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the stiff suspension and handling of the truck! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it in the desert.

  4. Watson Kovacek 2024-09-06

I've only had the truck for two weeks, so I can't comment on its reliability. However, I've had an 05 Colorado CC Z71 2WD (which had poor mileage and a jolting ride) and an 08 Frontier V6 ext cab (which had very poor mileage). I chose the XLT for its options and the 2.3/5M for its mileage, and I'm very pleased with the ride (it's much better than the Colorado, though not quite as good as the Frontier). The fit and finish are just as good as my previous trucks, and the brakes (4 wheel disc) are on par with others. While the power and acceleration are down from others, it's still acceptable. The mileage is light years ahead of others, with about 10 MPG better than both my previous city and highway driving. I only tow light loads (flat boat/utility trailer), but the engine easily handles it. Based on the build quality, ride, and mileage, I highly recommend this truck.
