2001 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2001 Ford Ranger problems

The 2001 Ford Ranger has several common problems that have been reported by owners, including:

  • Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump breaks down without warning. The pump cannot avail fuel to the engine; hence the vehicle does not start since compression doesn’t happen. The fuel pump has to be replaced for the vehicle to start again.
  • High Fuel Consumption: The 2001 Ford Ranger consumes a lot of fuel per mile. The fuel economy of the vehicle is very high and hence it is expensive to operate.
  • Poor Oil Pan Seal: The 2001 Ford Ranger has a poor oil pan seal that causes oil leaks which can drain the oil in just a few hours. The seal is substandard and causes the Ford owner a lot of money.
  • Faulty Seat Belts: The seat belts fail on multiple occasions. After a few minutes of use, the seat belts loosen and fail to remain fastened. Most auto-dealers do not yet have the solution to this problem and customers are forced to drive the vehicle with loose seat belts.
  • Headlight Pulsing: When the Ford is running and headlights on, they start pulsing. The more the truck keeps running, the more the lights keep flashing. The light flashing happens both with the exterior lighting and the interior lighting.
  • Transmission Issues: With over 720 problems reported, with the majority of the reports on transmission issues, the Ford Ranger 2001 is one of the worst Ford Rangers. In many of the reports, car owners complained about gear shifts. Car users report these issues to have begun after the 100,000-mile mark.
  • Faulty Air Conditioning System: The truck fan can stop running.

These problems have been reported by owners of the 2001 Ford Ranger and have caused inconvenience and additional expenses. It is important to note that these issues may not affect all 2001 Ford Rangers, but it is crucial to be aware of them when considering purchasing or maintaining this vehicle.

What is the most common problem with the Ford Ranger?

Common engine problems on a Ford Ranger include a turbo failure and engine crank damage which causes excessive overheating, dark smoke from the exhaust, and a dip in fuel economy. Engine problems can land your car in serious trouble. Thus, it is always better to consult a mechanic right after you've spotted any faults.

How many miles will a 2001 Ford Ranger last?

Ford Rangers can last up to 20 years and beyond if they are well maintained and well cared for. The Ranger is built to withstand up to 300,000 miles and years upon years of use. The Ford Ranger is considered the littler brother of the Ford F-150 and is a great alternative if you want a more gas-friendly truck.

Is the 2001 Ford Ranger a good truck?

The Ford Ranger falls far short of modern pickup-truck standards. It's ungainly and stiff-riding; has a rough and noisy, inefficient engine; and a cramped, uncomfortable cabin. The interior is crudely finished. Compact dimensions and a usefully sized bed are the Ranger's only pluses.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-19
  • VIN: 1FTZR15U81T
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: so I recently purchased this truck thinking it was all safe, the pictures were too good to be true thats for sure, When I brought the truck back the old owner even drove with me knowing what he just sold me. The next day I was so happy so I get it registered and insured and I was so eager to hope in and drive around in my new "safe" truck I also went out with my loved one and it sickens me that the old owner was ok with selling me a not so safe truck and I could have died if the frame bracket broke or the frame cracked while i was driving but when I started to look under I saw the problem and I was scared I saw that the upper control arm bracket mount was rusted and the strut tower as well it had a Hole forming and a crack on the strut tower. I also found out that there was a crack in the frame and i've looked up online and it seems that the frame and other components rust I don't know what to do. Im also a college student who is trying to get into the mechanic world and this scares me with how many trucks like this are out on the road.

The front end frame, engine and all the components work flawlessly while the rear frame is just crumbling in rust.

The contact noticed that the temperature gauge would indicate the vehicle was hot once the hesitation started. The mechanic linked the seat belt failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 01V227001 (Seat Belts) and the overheating failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V399000 (Vehicle Speed Control). Love the truck all the one I have looked at have the same issues over several years on fb marketplace and cannot find a good frame in any salvage yard. Didn’t Toyota’s have the same issues and they had a recall. Why doesn’t Ford have one? Call Ford directly and they won’t do a thing. Negative 2001 Ford Ranger car reviews

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the truck I received for my 16th birthday. While the outside looks stylish, I've found the inside to be a bit cramped and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I've also noticed that the cab starts to shake when I drive over 70mph, which is a bit concerning. Additionally, I've found that the trade-in value for this truck is quite low. Thanks for listening!

The exterior of the vehicle has a cool appearance, but it may not be the most practical choice for hauling larger items such as an ATV or a sheet of plywood. The interior is functional, but it may be considered bland with its all-gray color scheme and lack of frills. However, it still provides a comfortable and functional driving experience. In terms of performance, the 5-speed automatic transmission provides decent acceleration in gears 1, 2, and 3, but struggles in 4th and 5th gear. The constant shifting of the automatic transmission can be frustrating, and it would be better if Ford offered a solid 4-speed automatic instead. The engine may not provide enough power on the highway, even when taken out of overdrive, resulting in higher RPMs and lower gas mileage. Despite this, the vehicle still manages to achieve a respectable 17 mpg in both city and highway driving, and up to 19 mpg downhill with a tailwind.

The Ranger is a great vehicle to own, with its off-road capabilities and enjoyable driving experience. Although some owners have reported issues with the rear doors and rear wheels, these are common problems that can be easily resolved. In the rare event that a problem does occur, the transmission can be fixed with minimal hassle. Overall, the Ranger is a reliable and trustworthy vehicle that is sure to impress any driver.

  4. Art Jaskolski 2024-09-09

The vehicle had several issues, including rust on the inside bottoms of the doors, poor fuel economy averaging 14.9, an inaccurate fuel gauge, and a blown gasket inside the transmission that required a rebuild at only 8000 miles. Additionally, the fog lamps had to be replaced 9 times due to moisture build-up inside the lens, and there were 3 recalls in just 1 year. The driver rear door needed to be re-adjusted because the striker wasn't aligned, and there was a squealing noise coming from the front drive wheels. Unfortunately, these issues made my ownership experience with the vehicle the worst I have ever had.

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Ranger! It sounds like it handles really well and is reliable with minimal upkeep. I understand that you would like better fuel economy and more space in the stepside bed for hauling things. Overall, it sounds like you are very happy with your Ranger and would definitely recommend it to others. It's great to hear that it is also very affordable.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Ranger. I purchased it used with 7500 miles for $7000 and have been driving it for 14 months now. While the ride can be a bit harsh and the rear end jumps on some bumps, I'm extremely pleased with the gas mileage. It has increased from mid-20's at purchase to 31 mpg at my last fill-up! I've had no maintenance problems and it's been very dependable. In fact, I took it on a trip from VA to WI and back this summer with no mechanical problems. I also think it's the best looking little truck out there and would definitely consider buying another one in the future.

Great to hear that you had a positive experience with your Ranger! It's impressive that you only needed to replace a tensioner in three years of ownership. Despite some criticism of its 'outdated style', it sounds like you appreciate the classic pickup look with modern improvements in the engine, transmission, interior, and electronics. Best of luck with your new 2005 Ranger!

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your 2001 Ranger! It's impressive that you've already driven it up to 60,000 miles without any issues. While the 4.0L V6 can be a bit sluggish at times, it still seems to be a good fit for the truck. I can understand your frustration with the fuel economy, though. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  4. Greyson Osinski 2024-09-15

My 01 Ranger XLT 4.0L only gets 16-17 mpg, which is disappointing given that my 1998 Ranger XLT consistently achieves 20 mpg or better. Despite needing a 4X4, the 01 model squeaks loudly in all weather conditions. However, I am confident in my ability to find a solution to these issues.

  5. Stanton Kessler 2024-09-07

I was shopping for a daily driver to replace my 79 F150 and decided to test drive the Edge on a whim. I fell in love with it! The semi dual exhaust sounds great and the truck rides higher than the base R, giving it a more truck-like feel. The suspension is a bit stiff, but that's to be expected. The basic pickup interior has vinyl floors and seats, crank windows, and no power features, but the CD player is a nice touch. My only regret is that it's not a long bed. I needed a dependable work truck and the smaller size helps in downtown traffic. The 3.0L motor isn't too punchy and doesn't get great gas mileage, but it gets the job done. The motor may struggle on inclines and the auto transmission downshifts to compensate, but overall I'm very happy with my purchase.
