The Mitsubishi Triton or Mitsubishi L200 is a mid-size pickup truck produced by Mitsubishi Motors. In Japan, where it has only been sold intermittently and in small numbers, it was originally known as the Mitsubishi Forte and from 1991 as the Strada. In the United States, Chrysler Corporation sold captive imports as the Dodge D50, Dodge Ram 50 and Plymouth Arrow truck, and Mitsubishi marketed it as the Mitsubishi Mighty Max until 2002.

For most export markets the name L200 is used, though it has also been known as the Rodeo, Colt, Storm, Magnum, Strakar (used in Portugal since 1999; Strakar is a portmanteau of Strada and Dakar), and others. In 2015, Fiat Professional launched a rebadged version as the Fiat Fullback. In 2016, Ram Trucks launched a rebadged version as the Ram 1200 for the Middle East market.

Cumulative sales of the first three generations exceeded 2.8 million units around the world. As of February 2021, the pickup truck is sold in every available Mitsubishi market except the United States, Canada, Japan, India and China. In Japan, it was previously sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Common 1985 Dodge Ram 50 problems

Exhaust Leak at Header Pipe

A common problem with the Dodge Ram 50 1985 is an exhaust leak at the header pipe, which can be caused by several factors such as corrosion, loose clamps, or damaged gaskets. This issue can lead to a decrease in engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. In some cases, the exhaust leak can also cause a loud ticking or hissing noise, which can be quite disturbing for the driver and passengers.

Whining Noise from Oil Pump

Another issue that Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners have reported is a whining noise from the oil pump. This noise can be caused by a variety of factors, including low oil pressure, worn-out bearings, or a damaged oil pump. In some cases, the noise can be so loud that it can be heard over the engine and can be quite distracting for the driver. If left unaddressed, this issue can lead to serious engine damage and costly repairs.

Engine Noise due to Carbon Buildup

Carbon buildup in the engine can also be a problem for Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners. Over time, carbon can accumulate in the engine's cylinders, piston rings, and other components, leading to engine noise, reduced performance, and decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, the carbon buildup can also cause the engine to misfire or stall, which can be quite dangerous for the driver and passengers.

Engine Oil Leaks

Engine oil leaks are another common problem with the Dodge Ram 50 1985. These leaks can be caused by several factors, including worn-out gaskets, damaged seals, or corroded engine components. In some cases, the oil leaks can be quite significant, leading to a decrease in engine performance, increased emissions, and the risk of engine damage.

Excessive Engine Oil Consumption

In addition to engine oil leaks, some Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners have reported excessive engine oil consumption. This issue can be caused by several factors, including worn-out piston rings, damaged cylinders, or a faulty PCV system. In some cases, the excessive engine oil consumption can lead to frequent oil changes, increased maintenance costs, and the risk of engine damage.

Boxed Frames and Hidden Rust

Another issue that Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners have reported is problems with the boxed frames, which can be prone to hidden rust. This issue can be particularly problematic for owners who use their trucks for heavy-duty hauling or off-road driving, as the rust can weaken the frame and increase the risk of structural failure.

Electrical Issues

Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners have also reported various electrical issues, such as blown fuses, malfunctioning gauges, and intermittent electrical connections. These issues can be caused by several factors, including corroded wiring, damaged fuses, or faulty electrical components. In some cases, the electrical issues can be quite complex and may require the expertise of a professional mechanic to diagnose and repair.

Chasing Electrical Problems

In addition to the electrical issues mentioned above, some Dodge Ram 50 1985 owners have reported having to "chase" electrical problems, which can be quite frustrating and time-consuming. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including corroded wiring, damaged fuses, or faulty electrical components. In some cases, the electrical problems can be quite complex and may require the expertise of a professional mechanic to diagnose and repair.
