1996 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 1996 Ford Ranger problems

The 1996 Ford Ranger, a compact pickup truck, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the engine misfiring. This problem can lead to power loss, car stalling, and mild tenors. The cause of the misfire can be due to dirt in the fuel injector or failed ignition coil packs resulting from worn-out wires. An error in the engine control module, leaking hoses, and other factors could also contribute to the misfiring engine. To diagnose and resolve the issue, it is recommended to consult a mechanic.

Another problem reported by owners is loose steering wheels, mainly after long mileage. This issue can be caused by worn-out steering components or an alignment problem. The Ranger may wander from side to side on the highway, which is a major alignment issue. If you notice any issues with your Ranger's steering, it is advisable to visit a mechanic for a check-up and possible wheel alignment.

Transmission problems have also been reported in the Ford Ranger, particularly in earlier models. However, transmission issues are not exclusive to older models, as there have been complaints about shaky or delayed transmissions resulting in car jerking and gear slips in more recent models. The gear slips in Ford Rangers may be due to a worn-out clutch or shift cables. Transmission overheating has also been reported, which can lead to serious car issues, including the need for a complete transmission system replacement, which is not a cheap maintenance job.

Lastly, the 1996 Ford Ranger has been reported to have stalling issues when starting from cold. This hesitation might result from a damaged air intake or faulty exhaust gas recirculation valve restricting recirculated gas flow. It can also be due to a defective engine coolant temperature sensor. To find out why your Ranger stalls at idle, visit the mechanic for inspection and repairs when necessary.

In summary, the 1996 Ford Ranger has several common problems, including engine misfiring, loose steering wheels, transmission issues, and stalling when starting from cold. To address these problems, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

MY COLLISION SHOP REPLACED THE AIRBAGS WITH UNKNOWN YEAR FORD RANGER AIRBAGS, BUYING SOME NEW PARTS FROM FORD TO COMPLETE THE INSTALL. THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW IF THESE ARE RECALLED TAKATA AIRBAGS WITHOUT AN INSPECTION. MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, VARSITY FORD IN ANN ARBOR MI, IS REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT A RECALL NOTICE. ANY INSPECTION, EVEN IF THESE ARE RECALLED AIRBAGS, WILL BE AT MY COST BECAUSE THIS IS A 1996 TRUCK. I CALLED FORD'S RECALL LINE AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION, AND THEY REFERRED ME TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO PLAN TO TRACK DOWN DANGEROUS TAKATA AIRBAGS INSTALLED AFTER MANUFACTURE, EVEN IF THEY WERE ORIGINALLY INSTALLED IN ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED.

Negative 1996 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Lisandro Spinka 2024-08-03

You've owned your Ranger for 4 years now and it has proven to be a reliable truck, even during the harsh Minnesota winters with temperatures dropping to -10 to -15 below zero at night. The dash is nicely designed with easy-to-use controls for air and heat that work well. The only issue you've encountered is the check engine light turning on intermittently, which has been looked into by 3 different shops without any resolution.

  2. Dedrick Weissnat 2024-05-28

I'm so glad you were able to purchase the vehicle from the original owner! It sounds like you've had a lot of great experiences driving it around locally and on some longer trips. The ride and handling are definitely comfortable, and it's great to hear that the dependability has been top-notch. I do understand your frustration with the gas mileage, though. With the small v-6, it can be a bit of a challenge to get good fuel efficiency. It sounds like you're getting around 16 MPG on the highway, which is decent, but it drops to about 13-14 MPG around town. Hopefully, you're still able to enjoy the vehicle despite this issue!

Positive 1996 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Doyle Murazik 2024-10-28

This truck is sleek, snappy, and well-built. The 4.0 is a true mix between power and economy, averaging about 20 to the gallon, and still more power than anybody buying a compact truck would need. You should definitely consider buying a Ford.

My Ford Ranger is the best investment I have ever made. It runs like a dream and has never let me down. It's my first car and I wouldn't drive anything else but a Ford.

  3. Alexys Bahringer 2024-10-14

This truck has been incredibly reliable, especially considering the high mileage it has. Although it can be a little sluggish on the freeway at times, it still runs well. I have used it for work for a year and a half now and it still looks and runs great!

This is such a lovely little truck! The gas mileage is unbeatable, and with the Warn locking hubs, it just keeps on running. It's amazing that it's almost an antique now, and I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to part with it.

You've found an amazing deal on a fantastic truck!
