1998 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 1998 Ford Ranger problems

The Ford Ranger, introduced in 1982, has been a popular compact pickup for many years, but it has had its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1998 Ford Ranger, based on complaints from owners:

  • Leak in crankshaft seal: The 1998 Ford Ranger has a history of leaking crankshaft seals, which can cause oil drips. This problem can be caused by a damaged valve cover gasket or a faulty oil pan, and is exacerbated by the fact that the crankshaft is subject to immense stress and wear and tear.
  • Engine problems: Some 1998 Ford Ranger owners have reported issues with the engine, including turbo failure and engine crank damage. These problems can cause excessive overheating, dark smoke from the exhaust, and a dip in fuel economy. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to consult a mechanic right away to prevent further damage to your engine.
  • Crankshaft sensor failure: The crankshaft sensor is responsible for reading the engine's RPM and position, and feeding that data into the ECU to regulate the time of fuel injection. Intermittent crankshaft sensor failure can cause a dip in fuel efficiency, engine misfires, and sluggish acceleration. If your Ranger won't start, a faulty crankshaft sensor could be the culprit.
  • Fuel injector problems: A clogged or dirty fuel injector can cause an imbalance in air and fuel supply, leading to problems like engine stalling, rough idling, engine misfires, and a significant drop in fuel economy. A faulty fuel injector can also result in unusual movements of the Tachometer needle. An experienced mechanic can easily fix the issue for you, but it will cost around $350-$500 for a replacement fuel injector, with labor costs extra.

While these problems can be frustrating for 1998 Ford Ranger owners, it's important to remember that properly maintained Rangers can easily last up to 250,000 miles. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these issues from becoming more serious and costly.

Negative 1998 Ford Ranger car reviews

I purchased my 98 Ranger 5 years ago and have put about 50k miles on it. I absolutely love driving it, but it has been quite costly to maintain. Unfortunately, I have had to deal with a broken reverse linkage in the transmission ($2500), failed 4X4 locking hubs ($600), a failed heater ($900), a broken door latch ($125), a valve cover leak ($150), and a front wheel bearing issue ($450). Despite these setbacks, I still have a soft spot for my truck. However, I must admit that it has been a bit of a challenge at times.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 98 Ranger that I bought back in 2000 with just under 27,000 miles on it. I'm happy to report that we haven't had many problems with it! The only issue we had was with the door ajar sensor on the driver's side, but that was due to poor installment of an aftermarket alarm. When I first got it, I noticed that it had the wrong taillights on it (I should have inspected it more thoroughly) and the turn signals weren't even hooked up! So, I immediately returned it and they replaced them right away. We did have to replace the serpentine belt at 30,000 miles, which seemed a tad early, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. I even used it to haul my Harley to Connecticut and back and it ran flawlessly. Thumbs up from me!

Reliable vehicle. This was my first purchase and I couldn't afford anything down, but the 48 monthly payments at 0.9 APR were okay. The 36K warranty fixed an exhaust problem at 3k and since then, I have no complaints. It has been a reliable commuter vehicle with the occasional camping trip or helping someone move (all truck owners know what I'm talking about...). It owns the mountains with chains and I can't complain! The small 2.5L engine gets the job done and the 25 MPG isn't bad.

My second Ranger was unfortunately a total piece of junk. However, I can confidently say that I have replaced the alternator, ball joints, and A/C compressor, and have fixed the issue with the door ajar light. Additionally, I have addressed the rusted freeze plugs and oil leaks. While the V6 engine may only get 15mpg, I am confident that I can improve its efficiency. Lastly, I have upgraded the stock radio to a better one.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it used when it was about 6 months old and I have to say, I really like it! While it may not be the most comfortable or stylish vehicle out there, it gets the job done. I've put over 135,000 miles on it and besides normal wear & tear and a small leak in the roof that started last year (which I still haven't fixed - oops!), I haven't had any problems. The power is decent and I have no problem getting up to 65 mph when I get on the highway. It's not the most comfortable ride on long trips, but hey, it's a small pick up, not a Mercedes. Thanks for listening!

Positive 1998 Ford Ranger car reviews

The Ranger is one of the best little trucks on the market. I have owned several different trucks of this particular style between the years of 1998 and 2000, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They may not be anything special, but they have plenty of power for everyday needs and are excellent travelers. The truck is very comfortable and extremely reliable, hands-down! Additionally, they are definitely good looking little trucks. I have been very pleased with every one I’ve ever owned. This is the first one of these I’ve had with the 4.0 V6, and it definitely makes a difference. I highly recommend this Ranger.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your truck! It sounds like it's been a reliable companion for you, even with the high mileage. Although it may not have all the bells and whistles, it's great to hear that it's meeting your needs. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

98 Ranger XLT x-cab stepside. I absolutely love this truck! It has never given me any trouble, just the occasional oil change and brake job. I bought it used with only 15k miles on it and have never regretted my purchase. It's surprisingly good on gas and we've taken it on many trips without any issues. If they had a club cab model, I would definitely get another one, but for now, it's the Sport Trac for me. With kids, I need more room, but I can't give up the convenience of a truck bed.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you that I bought my truck brand new in the fall of 1998 and it has been such a great companion to me. Despite having driven it for 150,000 miles, it has held up really well. Of course, I've had to replace the alternator a few times, but that's to be expected with any vehicle. Last month, I had to do the front struts, but overall, it's been a pretty smooth ride. The only thing I would say is that the front seat could be a little more comfortable for someone my size (6'2

This is a great truck! You've had it for 11 years and moved yourself and family members (mother, brother, daughter, etc.) 15 times. That 3.0L engine has never let you down, and you average 22 mpg with an auto tranny and 3.45 axle.
