Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.
The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER, THIRD TIRE FAILED ON INTERSTATE ONCE AGAIN IN THE SAME WAY. STEEL BELT CUT THE FIBERGLASS REAR OUTER FENDER IN HALF, RIPPED OUT THE REAR WIRING HARNESS, DESTROYED THE LEFT TAIL LIGHT, AND EVEN DAMAGED THE GASOLINE FILL TUBE AND DESTROYED ITS LOCKING GAS CAP FROM THE FORCE OF THE BELT WHIPPING ROUND AND ROUND THE WHEEL, PARTIALLY ATTACHED AND PARTIALLY OFF. NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, BUT WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT. ALL TIRES FAILED WHILE IN DRIVER'S REAR WHEEL POSITION. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE AS BOTH THE FRAMES FOR TOYOTA AND FORD ARE BUILT AT THE SAME FACTORY IF I AM CORRECT? THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN DOWN THE ROAD ALL TIMES THE ABOVE LISTED FAILED. WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON GASOLINE SPRAYS FROM THIS CRACK PIECE OF PLASTIC LINE. THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS ELECTRIC AND ENERGIZES ANYTIME THE IGNITION IS ON THE PUMP IS LOCATED IN THE GAS TANK AT THE REAR OF THE TRUCK . THIS IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS AS THE SPRAYING GASOLINE COULD EASILY HIT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER OR EXHAUST SYSTEM WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. You've had your Ranger for 5 1/2 years and it's been mostly reliable, with only minor problems such as egr sensors, vacuum lines, and replacing the hubs. You're able to get anywhere from 18 to 20 mpg on a consistent basis, which is great! However, you do mention a few complaints such as the truck riding like a lumber truck, the engine feeling breathless at highway speeds, and the seats being terribly uncomfortable. You also mention that the autolocking hubs are a joke and that you replaced yours with manuals. Lastly, you note that the brakes can be really grabby when there's a lot of moisture in the air. Despite these issues, you feel that the paint has held up well over time and overall, you believe that the Ranger is a great entry-level vehicle for young buyers who are looking for a reliable option.

I have owned several vehicles, including ultra-luxury models, but none have been as reliable and comfortable as this one. I bought it from the dealer with 15000 miles on it and the only issue I had was with the adjustment switch for the driver side o/s mirror, which was promptly replaced under warranty. The 4.0 engine provides ample power for any situation and gets reasonable economy for its size. The handling is superb. I am considering a Ford SUV for my next vehicle, as I will need a little more room.

My 1997 Ford Ranger has been in the family for as long as I can remember. It has been a reliable trip maker, and we have never had to do any major repairs on it. The truck has been driven from Chicago to Alabama, South Dakota, Florida/Georgia, and back multiple times, and it has never let us down. When my dad gave it to me, it had at least 225k miles, and now it has over 250k miles and is still running strong. The only downside is that it is super light and RWD, so driving in snow can be a challenge. I once spun into a ditch while driving home from work, but thankfully, I was able to use the inertia to get myself out. Overall, this truck is an amazing vehicle, and I feel lucky to have it in my possession.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned having the 4 cylinder engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. While it may not have the quickest take off, I think it's great that you're able to use it as both a daily driver and a work truck around the farm. Plus, the gas mileage more than makes up for any power sacrifices. It's impressive how durable it is, like a Timex watch that can take a beating and keep on ticking!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this truck. When I bought it new, I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable it was and how well it suited my needs. While it wasn't the most powerful off-road vehicle, it got the job done. However, I did have some issues with the engine revving constantly and using up a lot of gas. I also had to replace a few idler pulleys due to some screeching noises. Despite these challenges, I made sure to keep up with regular oil changes. Unfortunately, the engine unexpectedly gave out at 79,000 miles. Overall, it was a good vehicle while it lasted, but I wouldn't recommend it for those looking for a long-term investment.

While the 4 cylinder engine won't break any speed records, I'm happy with the average 26 MPG I'm getting. You made a great choice with this vehicle! It's reliable, fun to drive, and well-built. The Ranger's design is well thought out and it's usually easy to work on. While changing the spark plugs and PCV valve on the 4-cylinder engine can be a bit tricky, the clutch is responsive and durable. Shifting the standard transmission is a breeze and the instrument cluster is well laid out. The only repairs I've had to do were covered under warranty, which included repairing a muffler heat shield with broken welds and replacing a corroded catalytic converter. Overall, I'm very happy with this vehicle and have had trouble-free driving since purchasing it new.

I own a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 4cly. with 99,000 miles to this day. It has been very reliable, with only a small problem with the front brake slide pins outside of normal maintenance. However, there is one major exterior flaw: rust! Despite washing the underbody every spring, it still rusts. It seems as though Ford designed this truck's frame to rust out. Perhaps if I lived in a state other than Maine (without snow and salted roads), this would not be a problem, but who knows.
