The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.
The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.
Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.
Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my GT - it was actually bought new and has been pretty reliable overall! Of course, there's been some normal maintenance needed, but nothing too major. Unfortunately, we did have to replace the engine at 187,000 miles due to a teenage driver forgetting to check the oil. But even with that setback, the car now has 210,000 miles and is still going strong. The only thing I wish it had was a 6-speed instead of a 5-speed. Thanks for listening!

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my 93gt. It's been a great car with over 100k miles on it, and I've only needed to do regular oil changes. In the past, I owned a 2000 Grand Prix gt with a terrible paint job that chipped easily in the hot weather down here. It's really important to have a car with good quality, don't you think? The interior of my Probe and the 5-speed transmission are a huge upgrade from the 3.8 GM engine with only 200hp. One thing I wish Ford/Mazda would improve is the availability of affordable aftermarket parts after the warranty expires. Luckily, I haven't had to use my warranty yet. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car in 1992 from a dealership, thinking I'd drive it for a year or two and then upgrade. But I fell in love with it from the very beginning. Now, at 160,000 miles, it's still going strong! I absolutely adore this car and I hope it lasts for another 40,000 miles. I've only ever needed to do routine fixes like replacing the starter and brakes.

I bought my SE back in November 2005 and it has been an amazing car ever since. I tested it on the highway and it got an impressive 37MPG. The 5-speed standard is definitely the way to go with these cars. I even installed a turbo upgrade from a Mazda 626 kit, which turned this little car into a tiny monster. It now boasts an impressive 300HP at the front wheels, and I still manage to get 30MPG when I drive it sensibly. The only car that has ever come close to being as much fun as this little car is my 1970 Maverick, which I put a 1969 302 BOSS in. If you can find one with a standard shift, it's definitely worth buying for a single person to get around in. However, please note that the back seat is quite small and only suitable for children aged 7 or 8 and under.

This sounds like a great car! You got it with 40k and now have almost 90,000 on it, and it's never had a major problem, only minor ones that you fixed yourself. It gets 25 mpg city/30mpg highway, and the performance is good. The car looks awesome with the chrome wheels, and for an 11 year old design, it's still holding its own against new cars. The handling is awesome. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone!

I purchased my GT brand new and while it is a great looking vehicle, I have experienced a few issues. Recently, the top and lower idler pulleys in the engine failed, which could have been fatal for the engine, but luckily I caught it in time. At 50,000 miles, I had to replace the ignition distributor assembly after the engine shut off during rush hour traffic. Although it was costly at $700 for a remanufactured part, it was worth it. I have also had to replace the radiator in 2004, water pump in 2003, spark plug wire set in 2002, and R/F and L/F axles in 2003. Additionally, the rear lift on the hatch loses its ability to stay up, but I have had that fixed before. While the car does leak coolant and a little oil, my mechanic has advised me not to worry about it as it is not worth fixing. Despite its age, the car has only 60,000 miles on it and is still a joy to drive.

This car has been a source of frustration for me over the years. I have spent as much money on repairs as the car is worth, with the wheels alone costing $112 each! Unfortunately, every time I had to get the car fixed, which was often, it would cost much more than other cars, many times in the hundreds of dollars. To make matters worse, I did not receive a response from Ford when I reached out to them on their website. Overall, my experience with this Ford vehicle has been disappointing and I will not be purchasing another Ford vehicle in the future. I am currently trying to sell it so that I do not have to worry about repairs anymore. Given the poor quality and high cost of repairs, I would strongly advise against purchasing this car. It simply is not worth the hassle.

I've been the proud owner of my base probe since 6/29/99 (maroon with black interior) and purchased it with a 3,000 mile warranty. I've taken good care of it and the two CV boots that needed replacing were covered by the warranty I bought. Although it has had some idling problems, at the moment it vibrates so much that I have to put it in neutral at stop lights because it needs new motor mounts. I'm pleasantly surprised that a domestic car could last this long. I'm considering getting another probe from 95-97, but I've heard that GT parts can be expensive, so an SE will suit me just fine.

Hi there! I've been driving my '95 Ford Probe GT for about a year and a half now, and I have to say, it's been a great experience. While I did have a minor accident that was a bit pricey to fix, and the power window broke six months after I bought it, those are just regular car issues that can happen to anyone. I've had to replace the tires, brakes, and alignment, but that's all part of owning a car. The V6 24 valve engine and 5-speed manual transmission make for a really fun and fast ride, and I'm getting pretty good gas mileage too - about 21-25 miles per gallon, which is great for a V6. The only downside I've found is that it doesn't handle well in the snow, even with just a few inches. That's why I'm actually about to trade it in for a 4x4 SUV so I can travel safely in the snow. But overall, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a fun and reliable ride!
