The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.
The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.
Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.
Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

The 1997 Ford Probe was my second car, after a 1990 model. Unfortunately, the 1990 model died at 140K miles, and my 1997 model is now at 130K miles and on its final legs. Despite this, it has been a pretty good and reliable car. However, in the last 6 months, I've had to put in $1000 in repairs due to computer chip problems, the axles falling out, a new battery, and the exhaust starting to fall out. Although repairs can be a bit unusual because I am told it's actually a Mazda, so the parts are not from Ford, it's still fun to drive and looks great! I've truly loved this car, and I'm sad that its life is over.

Best car I've owned. I'm glad to say that I have about 80K miles on it now, and it has never given me a problem. The Mazda motor is very reliable, and the only thing I've done to it is change the timing belt and water pump (routine maintenance) and tune-ups/oil changes. It's quick, and insurance is cheap. I highly recommend it!

I can tell you that I absolutely love my little car! It's still running great, and while I've had to put a little money into it here and there, it's definitely the best car I've ever had. It's so quick and handles wonderfully in the rain. I do have to be careful with the gas pedal though, because it really gets up and goes! I wouldn't trade it in for anything.

This car was my first and, for the most part, it has been a decent car. However, the paint is too soft, the interior quality is poor, and the exhaust always seems to have issues. In terms of reliability, this car would rank pretty high in my books. I have had to replace the distributor twice, but the problem seems to have finally faded. Since this issue and a faulty fuel pump, the car has been dependable. I do agree with other Probe owners about the high prices to fix anything, though.

I've owned my Probe SE for two years now and it's been a great experience. I've only needed two new front tires and regular maintenance, which is to be expected. It's hard to find anything to complain about with this car, especially since it's based on Mazda's reliable platform.

This is a great car to drive until it needs some repairs. Today, I am trading it in and the dealership is offering me a value of 1800.00. I am thrilled! The cost of fixing this vehicle is probably a little over 3000.00, which is more than the car's value. I wish the new owner good luck!

Despite some challenges, this car has served me well. I have put 55K miles on it since purchasing it at 20K miles and have enjoyed driving it. While there have been some maintenance issues, such as the CD player, hydraulics for the hatchback/trunk door, and seatbelt buckles needing replacement, I have taken care of them promptly. Recently, I had to replace the radiator, EEC relay board, and battery cable cover, which cost $350 plus towing. However, I am confident in the car's reliability now that these issues have been addressed. Although some parts can be expensive and difficult to find, I am committed to keeping this car running smoothly. In the future, I plan to invest in $1500 worth of emissions parts, including oxygen sensors, to ensure the car continues to run efficiently. Overall, I am pleased with this car and its performance, and I am confident that it will serve its next owner well.

I purchased a 1994 Ford Probe in the middle of last year. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Within a month, I had to pay $1600 to get the transmission rebuilt. Since then, I have spent over $2300 on repairs and it still requires further attention. I have read other reviews about the Ford Probe and it seems that some people have had better experiences than me. However, I am hesitant to purchase another Ford in the future due to my negative experience with this car. The previous owner also experienced similar issues, despite taking good care of the car.
