The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.

The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.

Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.

Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

Common Ford Probe problems

The Ford Probe is a sporty car that was produced by Ford in the 1990s. While many owners of the Probe have reported being satisfied with its performance and style, there are a few common problems that have been reported by some owners.

One common issue with the Ford Probe is transmission problems. Some owners have reported that their Probe's transmission has failed or shifted poorly, leading to a rough driving experience. Transmission problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid or a worn-out clutch. In some cases, transmission problems can be resolved with a simple fluid change or clutch replacement, but in more severe cases, the entire transmission may need to be replaced.

Another common problem with the Ford Probe is issues with the electrical system. Some owners have reported experiencing electrical issues such as flickering lights, malfunctioning gauges, and problems with the car's power windows and locks. Electrical issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including loose or corroded wiring, blown fuses, or a malfunctioning alternator. In some cases, electrical issues can be resolved with a simple repair, but in more severe cases, the entire electrical system may need to be replaced.

The Ford Probe is also known for having issues with its fuel system. Some owners have reported experiencing problems such as a rough idle, stalling, or difficulty starting the car. Fuel system problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including a dirty fuel filter, a clogged fuel injector, or a faulty fuel pump. In some cases, fuel system problems can be resolved with a simple cleaning or replacement of the affected component, but in more severe cases, the entire fuel system may need to be replaced.

Another common issue with the Ford Probe is problems with the car's suspension and steering. Some owners have reported experiencing issues such as a loose steering wheel, a rough ride, or difficulty steering. Suspension and steering problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out bushings, damaged shocks or struts, or a misaligned steering system. In some cases, suspension and steering problems can be resolved with a simple repair, but in more severe cases, the entire suspension and steering system may need to be replaced.

In addition to these common problems, some Ford Probe owners have also reported experiencing issues with the car's brakes, engine, and interior components. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.

If you are experiencing any of these problems with your Ford Probe, it is important to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. In some cases, these problems can be resolved with a simple repair, but in more severe cases, the entire component or system may need to be replaced. By addressing these problems promptly, you can help ensure that your Ford Probe remains safe and reliable for years to come.

Ford Probe

Why did the Ford Probe fail?

In essence, it was good at everything but excelled at nothing in an environment where buyers were spoiled for choice. Even within Ford's lineup, the Mustang trumped the Probe for performance driving and the Thunderbird was a superior personal luxury car. On top of all that, the Probe was considered expensive.

Are Ford probes expensive to maintain?

Ford Probe Repair & Maintenance Costs

The annual maintenance cost of a Ford Probe is $425. Repair and maintenance costs vary depending on age, mileage, location and shop.

Why did Ford stop making the Ford Probe?

Why Was the Ford Probe Taken Off the Market? By 1997, Probe sales had dropped to less than 20,000 as buyer interest was lured away from the coupe and towards the Mustang it was meant to replace. It also lost sales to the Thunderbird and Mazda's Miata, all of which had rear-wheel drive.

How long did the Ford Probe last?

The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997.

Latest negative Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Clifford Larkin 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 1993

This car was great when I bought it. However, it required a lot of maintenance to keep it on the road, which ended up being quite expensive. Specifically, I had issues with the timing belts and cooling system.

  2. Obie O'Reilly 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 1995

I owned a 1994 Probe without any issues, but my experience with the 1995 SE has been quite different. The o/d light has been a persistent problem, causing the transmission to fail and requiring a costly replacement of $1700. While the driving experience is enjoyable, the transmission issues are a significant drawback.

  3. Dante Hills 2025-02-06

    Vehicle year: 1997

I purchased my GT brand new and while it is a great looking vehicle, I have experienced a few issues. Recently, the top and lower idler pulleys in the engine failed, which could have been fatal for the engine, but luckily I caught it in time. At 50,000 miles, I had to replace the ignition distributor assembly after the engine shut off during rush hour traffic. Although it was costly at $700 for a remanufactured part, it was worth it. I have also had to replace the radiator in 2004, water pump in 2003, spark plug wire set in 2002, and R/F and L/F axles in 2003. Additionally, the rear lift on the hatch loses its ability to stay up, but I have had that fixed before. While the car does leak coolant and a little oil, my mechanic has advised me not to worry about it as it is not worth fixing. Despite its age, the car has only 60,000 miles on it and is still fun to drive!

  4. Clair Franecki 2025-01-26

    Vehicle year: 1995

Don't be fooled by appearances! This car has not been a good fit for me. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with it - from the clutches to the transmission, and the parts are more expensive than other cars. It's not the most comfortable ride and lacks power, but it can be fun to drive for short distances. I would strongly recommend considering other options, such as a reliable and high-quality remote control car. I regret my decision to purchase this car, especially since I'm only 17 and spent all my savings on it. I don't want others to experience the same issues. Please take my advice and avoid this car.

  5. Kennith Jacobi 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 1994

Firstly, I wanted to share some information with you. Probes share the same chassis and driveline as a Mazda MX-6, but their resale values are much less. I have found that the V6 engine is incredibly smooth and refined, making it a pleasure to drive. The gearbox is also reliable and efficient. In fact, I have driven my Probe for 148,000 miles with the original clutch and it still works perfectly. Additionally, this car handles great and is a joy to drive. However, on 93-95 models, the ignitor and coil seem to fail quite often. To solve this issue, I installed an MSD system and it has been reliable ever since. I have power everything on mine and everything still works fine. Lastly, the exterior has the bad Ford red paint which fades badly. If they still made the Probe, I would definitely buy another one.

Latest positive Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Lambert Yost 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 1995

Parts can be quite expensive if you purchase them directly from Ford. However, you may be able to save some money by buying parts from your local parts store or by visiting a nearby repair shop. It's worth noting that the automatic transmission may fail around the 100,000-mile mark, although this can vary. In my experience owning this vehicle for 3 years, I have had to replace the oxygen sensors, 2 CV boots, and 1 brake caliper. Despite these minor issues, the car runs like a Swiss clock.

  2. Riley O'Reilly 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 1994

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it in Ohio and took it on a trip to Colorado a week later. After some adjustments, I found the perfect seat setting and now it's completely comfortable for 600+ mile days. The ride can be a bit harsh, but the seat is fine. The trunk space is great and it takes intersections like a slot car. It really shines on mountain roads and can handle 10,000 feet altitude with ease. I've had some repairs done, including CV joints, front struts, engine mounts, part of the exhaust system, and the distributor. I've also replaced the gas springs on the hatch twice, the headlights recently, and the power antenna needs to be replaced. Overall, not bad for a 16-year-old car!

  3. Triston Howell 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 1995

I have now driven 107,000 miles on this car and I still love the way it handles. I look for winding roads just to enjoy the way it hugs the road. I finally replaced the brake pads after 85K miles and I'm still on the original clutch and exhaust system. The car has been as reliable as any car I've ever owned - and I'm 54 years old.

Hi there! I'm the original owner of this amazing car. It's a V6 Automatic that just turned 205,000 miles and I'm proud to say that I've never had to take apart the transmission or engine, not even for a valve cover gasket! This car has never let me down and still starts better than my 2005 Honda Accord! It's also really fun to drive and has great visibility. :)

It sounds like you have a great little car! I love how quick and agile it is, and it must be so much fun to drive. Even though it's 11 years old now and starting to show its age, it's great to hear that it's been a reliable car for you. Adding aftermarket performance parts is a great way to keep it running smoothly. Thanks for sharing!
