1994 Ford Probe problems
The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.
The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.
Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.
Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

Common 1994 Ford Probe problems
The Ford Probe, particularly the 1994 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of them:
- Hard starting: Some Probe owners have reported difficulties starting their cars, particularly when the engine is cold. This could be due to a weak battery, a faulty starter motor, or issues with the fuel system.
- Rear brake calliper problems: The Probe is known to suffer from rear brake calliper problems, which can cause the brakes to stick or seize up. This can be resolved by loosening the callipers or replacing them entirely.
- Catalytic converter issues: Some owners have reported issues with the catalytic converter, which can cause a bad smell of fuel in the car and poor acceleration. The only way to resolve this issue is to fit a new catalytic converter on the car.
- Paint chipping: Many Probe owners have reported issues with the paint chipping easily, particularly around the bumper and bonnet area. The only solution to this problem is to sand down and re-spray the affected areas.
- Clutch slipping: Some Probe owners have reported issues with the clutch slipping, even on cars with low mileage. This can be resolved by fitting a new clutch, but this can be quite costly.
- Sunroof noise: Some Probe owners have reported an annoying noise from the sunroof, which is caused by the sunroof frame rubbing against the roof. This can be solved by fitting some foam between the sunroof frame and the roof or using some other form of protective insulant.
- Window seal failure: Some Probe owners have reported issues with window seal failure due to frameless windows. This can be resolved by fitting a new seal and avoiding putting pressure on the window when closing the door.
- Brake warning light: Some Probe owners have reported issues with the brake warning light coming on when applying the brakes. This can be resolved by checking the brake fluid levels and topping up the brake fluid to the top.
It's important to note that not all Ford Probes will experience these problems, and many will run smoothly without any issues. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider having the car inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.
Why did the Ford Probe fail?
By 1997, the Probe's final year, Ford sold less than 20,000 units compared to 108,000 Mustangs. Ford did such a poor job of positioning and marketing the Probe it was almost destined to fail. A third-generation Probe was planned, but that design became the early-2000s Mercury Cougar, also an unsuccessful car.

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1ZVLT20A8R5
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING A 1994 FORD PROBE SE, GOING NORTH ON WESTNEDGE IN PORTAGE, MICHIGAN WHEN I NOTICED TOO LATE THAT CAR IN FRONT OF ME HAD STOPPED MOVING. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND REAR ENDED IT. I WAS TRAVELING AT THE POSTED SPEED OF 35 MPH AND WAS SLOWING DOWN CONSIDERABLY BUT RAN OUT OF BRAKING ROOM. I BRACED FOR THE IMPACT AND HEARD A LOUD KRACK! AND THEN SOMETHING WHICH SOUNDED LIKE A SMALL BOMB HAD GONE OFF INSIDE MY CAR. I FELT A BURNING SENSATION AND THEN LOOKED AT MY ARM. IT LOOKED MANGLED, WITH GLASS IMBEDDED IN MY WRIST. THERE WAS LOTS OF SMOKE AND I HAD TROUBLE BREATHING. I HEARD MY WIFE SCREAMING AND SOBBING. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND LAID ON THE GRASS. THE PAIN WAS AWFUL. I COULD NOT BEAR TO LOOK AT MY DISFIGURED ARM. THE POLICE AND AMBULANCE ARRIVED. THEY SPENT A LONG TIME CHECKING ME OVER FOR INTERNAL BLEEDING AND A BROKEN NECK. MY WIFE COMPLAINED OF THE PAIN IN HER WRIST. I OVERHEARD THE PARAMEDIC DISCUSS OUR SITUATION. THEY EXPRESSED SURPRISE AT THE EXTENT OF OUR INJURIES IN COMPARISON TO THE DAMAGE FROM THE CRASH. WE SPENT 5 HOURS AT THE ER. MY WIFE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CLOSED FRACTURES TO HER RIGHT WRIST AND A BROKEN FINGER. I HAD BURNS ON MY RIGHT ARM WHERE THE END OF THE FOREARM AND ELBOW MEETS. I HAVE DEEP CUTS, ABRASION, AND BRUISES ON THAT ARM. THE OCCUPANTS OF THE OTHER CAR WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THE ACCIDENT AND DROVE HOME AFTERWARDS. YET, WE ARE STILL COPING WITH THE INJURIES CAUSED BY THE INFLATION OF THE AIRBAGS IN WHAT SEEMED LIKE A LOW SPEED IMPACT. WE WERE WEARING OUR SEATBELTS AND DID NOT RECEIVE SEATBELT LACERATIONS. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, NO COLLAPSING OF THE A PILLARS OR ROOF THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED MY WIFE'S BROKEN ARMS OR ME TO SUFFER SERIOUS BURNS AND CUTS. WHAT DID HAPPEN WAS THAT THE AIRBAGS EXPLODED, SHATTERED THE WINDSHIELD, WHICH SENT GLASS ONTO MY WRIST, AND CAUSED CONCUSSIVE DAMAGE TO MINE AND MY WIFE'S RIGHT ARM.

This is my second Ford Probe. My first was a 1997 and I had to get another one. I love the 1994 model because it is much more economical and smaller. It has great design, gas mileage, and comfort. All around, it's a great car!
-
I can tell you that I absolutely love my Probe! Although I have had a few minor issues with the trunk not staying up when popped and the CV joints needing to be replaced, overall it has been a great car. Plus, I have to say that the black color really makes it stand out!

Hi there! I've been driving my GT for over a year now and it's been a great experience. Even with around 140,000 miles on it, it still runs like a charm. Of course, I've had to put some money into repairs, but overall it's been an absolutely wonderful car to drive!
-
The 94 Probe GT that I recently retired was an exceptional vehicle. With over 100,000 miles driven in 8 years, it provided almost scary acceleration and insane handling abilities, especially when properly tuned with the 5-speed manual. Despite requiring a few major repairs, which were quite expensive, the original clutch lasted an impressive 115,000+ miles. However, after 8 years, the number of parts that needed replacement made it impractical to keep driving. These parts included a new drive axle, new brakes, and a new moonroof.
-
Nice car! You bought it just 4 months ago with 86k miles and it's been running great since you put your old 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT engine in it. When you bought your Probe, you couldn't believe it was a '94 - it's been garaged for 14 years so it looks almost brand new. The paint job looks relatively new and there are no dents, rust, or scratches.

Firstly, I wanted to share some information with you. Probes share the same chassis and driveline as a Mazda MX-6, but their resale values are much less. I have found that the V6 engine is incredibly smooth and refined, making it a pleasure to drive. The gearbox is also reliable and efficient. In fact, I have driven my Probe for 148,000 miles with the original clutch and it still works perfectly. Additionally, this car handles great and is a joy to drive. However, on 93-95 models, the ignitor and coil seem to fail quite often. To solve this issue, I installed an MSD system and it has been reliable ever since. I have power everything on mine and everything still works fine. Lastly, the exterior has the bad Ford red paint which fades badly. If they still made the Probe, I would definitely buy another one.
Kellen Thompson 2024-10-27
I can't believe I still have my '94 car that I purchased in September of that year. Despite some major issues over the years, it's still plugging away. I've had to deal with an oil leak, transmission problems, and an engine light that stayed on for two years, which turned out not to be the O2 sensor (they kept telling me it was and changed it twice). The seats are rotting, the liner where my hands have been (by the window) is also rotting, and the red paint is horrible! It's been painted twice and is now fading again. On the bright side, the trunk is massive (I once hauled a dining room set in three trips). It does idle rough, but a tune-up could probably fix that. Despite all of this, I have loved this car for 12 years. Now I need a new one and I'm not sure what to get.
Jordan Schmitt 2024-09-26
I bought this car from my sister as my first car after getting my license. It was a great ride for the first year, never giving me any trouble. However, after a year and a half, I started experiencing some issues. The car is made of cheap plastic and the side panels are held on by flimsy screws. The upholstery is thin and tears easily. I had to replace all four tires ($75 each), the water pump twice ($150), the battery (which was only a year old), the catalytic converter ($100), the radiator ($125), and a few other things. Despite these issues, I still have fond memories of my first car.

I got my 1994 Ford Probe SE with 213,000 miles on it 2 years ago. It has only failed me once, when it was in need of a tune up (all the spark plugs fouled out). The only expensive repairs I've had to make were for the front struts, water pump, and rack and pinion steering. Overall, it has been the best car and loads of fun to drive (especially with the five speed). Now with 240,000 miles, it still runs great!
