Common 2018 Ford Flex problems

The Ford Flex, a crossover utility vehicle produced by Ford, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Electrical System Issues: Many Ford Flex owners have reported various electrical problems, including complete shutdowns and speed loss while driving. These issues have been attributed to a faulty relay system, which can be resolved by replacing the system. Ford has not provided a fixed solution to this problem, but mechanics have found that replacing the relay system helps.
  • Airbag Deployment Failure: Between the model years 2009 and 2011, some Ford Flex vehicles experienced airbag deployment failure. The airbags would not inflate after being deployed, leading to a recall to replace the airbags with new ones. This issue was caused by Takata airbags, which were known for their dip in quality during that period.
  • Fuel Delivery Module Cracks: Some Ford Flex owners have reported fuel leaks due to cracks in the fuel delivery module. This issue was most prevalent in the 2013 model year, where the seeping oil could lead to a fire hazard due to its contact with an electrical circuit. Ford worked with its dealers to resolve this issue.
  • Transmission Issues: The Ford Flex has encountered transmission issues throughout its production years, with some owners reporting jerky shifts or abrupt downshifts. In more severe cases, the transmission has been known to fail altogether. Early signs of transmission problems include unusual noises when shifting or an illuminated check engine light. A software update for the transmission control module often provides a fix, but in persistent cases, a full transmission replacement may be necessary.
  • Brake Issues: Some Ford Flex owners have reported issues with the brakes, including premature wear of brake pads and brake rotors, as well as a spongy brake pedal feel. Regular brake inspections and staying on top of maintenance can prevent these problems. When purchasing a used Ford Flex, it is essential to review its maintenance records, focusing on brake replacements and repairs.

While these issues are common, it is important to note that the Ford Flex has received middle to high reliability scores on major review sites, with RepairPal giving it a decent 3.5 out of 5.0 rating, ranking it 7th out of 8 in its class. With proper maintenance, Ford Flex owners can easily put 200,000 miles on their vehicles.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-14
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2FMGK5B84JB
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I was waiting for my stop light to turn green at 39th street and southwest traffic-way, when my light turned green I started pulling through the intersection. I noticed a car coming towards me on southwest traffic-way at a high rate of speed. I hit the breaks thinking that this person is not going to stop. The vehicle proceeded to run the red light and hit the front passenger side of my vehicle at a high rate of speed and sent my 2018 Ford Flex spinning through the intersection. Not a single airbag went off in my vehicle, that is terrifying to me being a father of 3 young children I am blessed that they were not in the vehicle when the accident happened. The police showed up on the scene within minutes of the accident, the other driver took off running on foot. The police seemed confused as to why my airbags didn’t deploy, as well as the tow truck driver that hauled my vehicle away. The main component that I am reporting is that the airbags did not work or deploy, as a standard safety measure in vehicles I believe that is a big safety problem. The vehicle has been marked as a total loss by insurance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-14
  • VIN: 2fmgk5b85jb
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Hands-free connection to phone-Bluetooth. This happened a year ago. I believe around Sept 14th 2020. 6 days after warranty expiration the Sync3 hands-free system died on my Flex. I only had 32000 miles at that time. It was touted as a great safety feature when I purchased the car brand new. I live in Branson Mo where every road is curvy and drops off into ravines. The system is totally inoperable. Called Ford 800 number, they checked and told me they would not do anything with it. Talked to the local dealer and they said they only get so much goodwill money from Ford each year and since I didn't buy it from them they were not going to do anything. I used to live 8 hours north. Say it needs an APIM module. Well a couple months after that went out my backup camera fails to work about 20 percent of the time. DIstorted wavy screen, can't see anything. 2 safety features that are a joke when they don't work. Ford has multiple recalls on different years for the same systems. I am available to contact and inspect the car at any time.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-28
  • VIN: 2FMGK5C85JB
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: On 7-28-21, the Right Rear Toe Link Broke while I was driving, the wheel was sticking out and could not be driven. I have the old broken part and loose part. On 7-30-21, I had the broken part on right rear replaced and the Left rear part was loose and replaced also. As far as safety goes, it had to be towed to shop to get off the road, and could not drive. On 6-17-21, I took my car to Tom Holzer Ford in Farmington Hills, MI, to be inspected, because I was hearing a clunking noise on the right back side of the vehicle. After the serviceman at Tom Holzer test drove the car, They informed me the steering and suspension were okay. I have the paperwork stating it was okay. I have been leasing this car for 3 years and was now going to buy the car after my lease was done. I took it in to make sure, if there was a problem, it would be taken care of under 3 year warranty. I purchased the Flex on 7-19-21. And On 7-28-21, the Toe Link broke. I was not told that I should have taken it to a Ford Dealer, if something broke. But I did ask my Salesman, at the time I bought the car, if they would take care of the problem, if something broke in the near future. He said to contact him, and he would see what would they could do. I had to pay $95.00, to tow it 5 miles, to White Lake Auto Repair, which is 1 mile from my house. The total of the repair was $485.00, completed on 7-30-21. The service manager, at Tom Holzer, said Ford will not reimburse me. He said I should have brought the car to their dealership. My Husband worked for Ford for 42 years. We have been a loyal Ford family all these years, and have never had a problem like this. Being that I had the car checked out before the 3 year warranty, and the service department said it was okay, I feel I should be reimbursed for the repair, whether I took it to them, or to a Repair shop near my home, which we totally trust. Also, there were no warning lights or messages that came on in the car.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-16
  • VIN: 2FMHK6D88JB
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE (IT WAS IN MOTION), ON HWY 290 (NEAR MANOR, TX), THE STEERING ON OUR 2018 FORD FLEX SEIZED UP AND THE CAR WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN. DUE TO COMPLETE LACK OF STEERING, THE CAR WAS AN IMMEDIATE DANGER TO DRIVE AND IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO GET SAFELY OFF THE ROAD, BUT MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO DO SO. HE WAS LUCKY TO AVOID A MAJOR COLLISION. THE NEXT DAY WE CALLED FOR THE CAR TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR WITHOUT ANY ISSUE. WITH EXTREME MANUAL FORCE APPLIED, THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS BARELY ABLE TO TURN THE CAR ENOUGH IN ORDER TO GET IT ONTO THE TOW TRUCK. ONCE THE CAR WAS RECEIVED BY THE DEALER, THE SERVICE ASSOCIATE CONFIRMED THIS 'STEERING FAILURE' WAS A PROBLEM THEY HAD SEEN COME UP A FEW TIMES IN THE PRIOR WEEKS WITH OTHER FORD MAKES AND MODELS. THEY SAID IT WAS A COSTLY REPAIR AND I SHOULD BE LUCKY BECAUSE WE BOUGHT THE EXTENDED FORD WARRANTY PROGRAM AND THEY WOULD CALL ME LATER TO CONFIRM AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC WAS COMPLETED. LATER THAT DAY THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THEIR DIAGNOSTICS CONFIRMED THE STEERING FAILURE, THAT IT WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY AND MAY TAKE A FEW DAYS AS A MAJOR REPAIR FOR THE STEERING SYSTEM. 3 DAYS LATER, THEY DENIED ANY STEERING FAILURE, AND CLAIMED IT WAS A FAILED BATTERY INSTEAD. DESPITE OUR COMPLAINT, THEY CHARGED US $500 FOR A NEW ONE. AS A RESULT OF THIS SITUATION, WE SOLD THE CAR (AS A DEATH TRAP), CANCELLED OUR FORD EXTENDED WARRANTY AND SOLD ALL OF OUR FORD STOCK. I HOPE SOMETHING IS DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE THEIR STEERING FAILURES KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE. IF I SEE A FORD ON THE ROAD, I WILL BE GIVING THEM A WIDE BERTH.

HOWEVER, BATTERY WAS DEAD. NOW NEEDED TO GET DOG OUT TO GO IN ANOTHER VEHICLE -- BUT REAR DOOR LOCKED AND THERE WAS/IS NO WAY TO OPEN THE BACK UP TO GET HIM OUT WITH DEAD BATTERY. Negative 2018 Ford Flex car reviews

  1. Giles Rempel 2024-07-24

The drive train has proven to be reliable even at 60k miles. Although, there were some issues with the warranty when the trim flew off, Ford could have done better. The seats are extremely hard, making long drives nearly impossible. Additionally, the car rides rough and choppy, and the cargo capacity is limited due to the bulky plastic inside. The Sync on the Bluetooth requires frequent resetting. Despite these issues, I am confident that this car is a good choice for those who prioritize reliability over comfort.

  2. Liam Gerlach 2024-06-19

This car has been a nightmare for me. The cruise control struggles to maintain speed on inclines, causing frequent downshifting and a jerky ride. The safety features are also a source of frustration, with the doors constantly locking and the seatbelt failing to retract properly. The push-button start feature is also problematic, with limited options and a tendency to shut off randomly. Additionally, the car has a high rate of tire wear and alignment issues. Despite these challenges, I have taken steps to address them and continue to drive confidently.I found a shop that did a realignment job and fixed the issue. Although the car has additional covers on the engine that need to be removed to access the oil filter and drain plug, I am able to manage it with my own car lift. The glovebox storage is limited, but I can keep the owner's manual in it. While I had some difficulties with this car, I am confident in my ability to maintain it and will continue to do so.

  3. Mortimer Harvey 2024-04-01

I have looked at a number of these vehicles and noticed that the finish seems quite delicate. Unfortunately, every one I looked at had scratches, fading, nicks, and paint chips. It appears that the finish may not be the best.

  4. Dillon Satterfield 2024-02-06

I have always been a loyal Ford customer, having owned an Expedition, two different F150s, an F250, and now the brand new 2016 Flex. However, my recent experience with the Flex has been disappointing. In the first 6,000 miles, I have experienced five breakdowns due to sudden loss of acceleration, which is a serious safety concern. Despite having a code indicating that the throttle body was the problem, the first dealer I visited was unable to replicate the issue during a test drive and therefore could not fix it. However, the dealer we purchased the car from was very helpful and ordered a new throttle body for us. Unfortunately, the issue persisted and the car broke down four more times. While I was initially frustrated with the nearest Ford dealer's inability to help me, I understand that they were unable to service the car since another dealer had already ordered parts. I am disappointed that the parts are back-ordered for weeks, but I am confident that Ford will resolve this issue and ensure that their customers are safe on the road. The suspension issue with my Flex has been looked at twice already, but unfortunately, it still persists. Despite the challenges, I remain confident that the issue will be resolved. While I have had some negative experiences with this car and the manufacturer's service, I have always had positive experiences with Ford in the past. I hope that they will continue to uphold their reputation for quality and customer service. However, if the issues with my Flex persist, I may have to consider other options in the future. Safety is a top priority for me and my family, and I trust that Ford will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their customers.

Positive 2018 Ford Flex car reviews

  1. Valentin Predovic 2024-11-20

I've owned several vehicles in the past, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Honda. I've always dreamed of owning a Ford Flex because of its size. When I first learned to drive at 18, I took my driver's test in a 1975 Chevy Impala Wagon and passed with flying colours. I feel safe in larger vehicles, and my 2016 Ford Flex Limited has been a great ride so far with no issues. When I purchased the vehicle, it had close to 18,000 miles on it, so I checked the VIN# for any recalls. It had one for the throttle issue, but I was able to take it to a Ford dealership for repair under the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, even though I bought it from a Chrysler dealership in the same city. The repair only took about 1.5 hours. The Ford dealership informed me that they are responsible for fixing any issues with used vehicles under warranty, regardless of where it was purchased. If you have an extended warranty, the dealership where you purchased it is responsible for repairs after the original warranty expires. I drove my Ford Flex to Virginia with my husband, two dogs, and luggage, and it performed perfectly after the throttle recall repair. I made sure all recalls were fixed before our trip. When you buy a vehicle, whether it's new or used, it's important to check the VIN# for recalls after you have bought it so that it doesn't have any problems in the long run. In my case, I bought a 2016 Ford Flex Limited in Magnetic color and I am still loving it. Days after I bought it, I went back to the dealership where I bought it and they assured me that Ford would take care of the recalls and issues within the first 3 years/36,000 miles original warranty. This car is really spacious! It drives and rides like a car, not a truck, which is great because we don't need 8 inches of ground clearance like other SUV/crossovers. There is ample shoulder, hip, and leg room up front and in the 2nd row, and the visibility is fantastic. While the steering wheel controls aren't as intuitive as some other vehicles, having configurable screens is a nice touch in the gauge cluster. The touch screen is responsive and pretty easy to use. The only downside is that the transmission can feel a bit sluggish at times. You really have to dip into the throttle for it to kick down, and it will typically have to kick down 2 gears to find the powerband. The turbo engine would solve that problem, though.

Looking for a comfortable and easy-to-use car that's perfect for the over 60 age group? Look no further! This car has been low maintenance so far and averages around 23mpg. Plus, it's great for reducing road noise and making entry and exit a breeze.

I'm so glad to hear that you love your car! It's great that it has three rows to accommodate your elderly passengers and your furry friend. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.
