The Mitsubishi Lancer is an automobile produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.

The Lancer has been marketed as the Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times, and has been sold as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis in Japan since 2007. It has also been sold as Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis in Taiwan with a different facelift than the Galant Fortis. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008, over six million units were sold. There have been ten generations of Lancers.

Mitsubishi ended production of the Lancer in August 2017 worldwide, with the exception of Taiwan and China. An extensive facelift was given to the car by Pininfarina's Chinese offices.

Common 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer 2009 has been reported to have several common problems, which are discussed below.

  • Engine problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's engines have been reported to have several issues. The 1.5-liter engine, in particular, has been known to start eating up oil after 100,000km, due to ring issues . The oil gluttony can become more pronounced over time, with some owners reporting increased oil consumption after 200,000km . Additionally, the timing chain drive on the Lancer's engines has a resource of over 300,000km, but manual transmissions installed on Mitsubishi Lancers with a 1.5-liter engine until 2008 had design defects and were not very reliable .
  • Brake problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's brakes have been reported to fail, particularly in older models. This is caused by a defective brake booster vacuum check valve, which can be replaced with a new one from the manufacturer.
  • Steering problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's steering has been reported to pull to one side while driving on a straight road. This is caused by suspension system issues, which can be addressed by ordering a complete set of new tires and carrying out wheel alignment.
  • Air conditioning problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's air conditioning system has been reported to have issues, including a failing heater motor and compressor clutch bearing failures .
  • Electrical problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's electrical system has been reported to have issues, including expensive fan motor failures and problems with the drives for adjusting the mirrors, heated seats, climate control, and audio installation .
  • Rust issues: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's body has been reported to be prone to rust, particularly in Japanese imports that do not have the same European standards for winter road precautions.
  • Check Engine Light and 'Slow Down' Warning: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's check engine light may illuminate, accompanied by a 'Slow Down' warning message, even when the car seems to be working normally. This issue affects certain models and can be caused by a variety of issues, including a faulty MAP sensor or a clogged throttle body.
  • Automatic gearbox problems: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's automatic gearboxes have been reported to have issues with changing gears, including hesitancy and slipping. These issues can be addressed by replacing the gearbox with a new one, as automatic gearboxes are sealed units and cannot be repaired.
  • Oil leak: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's engine may leak oil, particularly around the front crankshaft oil seal. This issue can be addressed by replacing the seal when it begins to snot due to ignition coil malfunctions or other issues .
  • Fan speed and ventilation loss: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's fan may spin slowly, leading to ventilation loss. This issue can be addressed by replacing the blower motor, which is a relatively straightforward process.
  • Steering column wiring loop: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's steering column wiring loop may rub against roller contacts, leading to issues with the steering wheel buttons. This issue can be addressed by replacing the wiring loop or the buttons themselves .
  • Front impact sensors: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's front impact sensors may require replacement, particularly in cars older than 2009. This issue can be addressed by replacing the sensors to ensure that the airbags function correctly .
  • Drive belt: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's drive belt may be made of the wrong material, leading to overheating and battery charge loss. This issue can be addressed by replacing the drive belt with a new one from the manufacturer.
  • Stabilizer struts and bushings: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's stabilizer struts and bushings may begin to creak over time, leading to issues with the suspension system. This issue can be addressed by replacing the struts and bushings with new ones from the manufacturer .
  • Fluoroplastic plane bearings: The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's front pillar supports have fluoroplastic plane bearings, which do not favor dirt. This issue can be addressed by keeping the bearings clean and free of debris to ensure proper function .

In summary, the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer has several common problems, including powertrain issues, engine problems, brake problems, steering problems, air conditioning problems, electrical problems, rust issues, check engine light and 'slow down' warning, automatic gearbox problems, oil leak, fan speed and ventilation loss, steering column wiring loop, front impact sensors, drive belt, stabilizer struts and bushings, and fluoroplastic plane bearings. These issues can be addressed by replacing or repairing the affected parts, and regular maintenance can help prevent some of these issues from occurring.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-24
  • VIN: JA3AU86W79U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER FUNCTIONING, BUT THE TAIL LIGHTS WERE STILL OPERATING. THE CAR FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO BRAKE LIGHTS NOT FUNCTIONING AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THE ECU, PART NUMBER 8637C096 IS WHAT IS IN MY VEHICLE. THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL FOR A 2009 LANCER, SR-15-002, FOR THE ECU BUT BECAUSE OF THE PART NUMBER (8637A826) DIFFERENCE THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REPLACE MY ECU THAT IS FAULTY. UPON FURTHER PERSONAL INVESTIGATION I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL ISSUES SURROUNDING THE ECU FOR LANCERS;10091781, 10158957, 10142736, 10117850, 10158956, 10158955, 10142736, 10158957. SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS HAVE REPORTED ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND THAT THE COMPANY WOULD NOT FIX THE ISSUE. (HTTPS://WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM/MITSUBISHI/LANCER/2009/ELECTRICAL/ELECTRICAL_SYSTEM.SHTML) PART NUMBERS ARE "NOT TYPICALLY GIVEN OUT" I WAS TOLD AT THE DEALERSHIP ON SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2020. THE REPLACEMENT PART NUMBER I WAS GIVEN WOULD BE 8637C496. HOWEVER, THIS PART MUST BE PROGRAMMED BY A LISCENED DEALER....THIS MONOPOLY OF PARTS, REFUSAL TO GIVE OUT PART IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS, AND EXTREME COST (OF THE PART ~$870) HAS CAUSED PEOPLE TO BE UNABLE TO AFFORD THE REPAIR WHILE THE MANUFACTURE IS ESSENTIALLY NOT COVERING THE COST OF THE SAFETY CONCERN AND PUTS THE COST OF REPAIR ON THE CONSUMER.. OR THE VEHICLE CANNOT PASS INSPECTION AND THEREFOR CANNOT CONTINUE TO BE IN SERVICE. I WILL NOT OWN ANOTHER MITSUBISHI BECAUSE OF THIS. MY HUSBAND PURCHASED THIS CAR BRAND NEW. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND ALL SAFETY RECALLS, SERVICE, AND EVEN TIRE ROTATIONS HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED ON THIS CAR. AFTER THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS COMPLETED, AND I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP TO RETURN HOME THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAYED ON AFTER MY CAR WAS PARKED AND THE KEY REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. AT THIS TIME MY 2009 LANCER IS SITTING AT THE DEALERSHIP, AND I WAS ASKED IF I WOULD LIKE TO ORDER THE PART TO REPLACE.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JA3AU86W69U
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WE HAVE ISSUES WITH THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS MALFUNCTIONING. THEY WOULD CUT OFF WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD. WOULD STAY ON WHEN CAR AND LIGHTS WERE TURNED OFF AND WE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE RELAY OUT TO GET THEM TURNED OFF. THEY WOULD FLASH ON AND OFF WHILE THE CAR WAS ON OR OFF. REPLACED NUMEROUS RELAYS, RETURNED MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH THREE TIMES. THIS CAUSED OUR SON TO HAVE A WRECK AS THE LOW BEAMS LIGHTS TURNED OFF AND A CAR NOT SEEING HIM PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF HIM. STARTED A 1 1/2 YEARS AGO, THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS TURNING OFF AND NOTHING BEING DONE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE ANOTHER ACCIDENT OCCURS OR DEATH FROM ACCIDENT.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-15
  • VIN: JA3AU26U39U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE FOLLOWING IS A RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION FLUID DIPSTICK ACKNOWLEDGED BY MITSUBISHI AND ADDRESSED BY A SERVICE BULLETIN. THEY HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL OF THE DIPSTICK. (HTTPS://MITSUBISHITECHINFO.COM/DATA/TECH_DOCS/2010/52005696/HTML/520056966.HTM) AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT NORMAL SPEEDS, 70MPH AND UNDER, THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEATED AND A SLOW DOWN WARNING APPEARED. I PULLED OVER, LIFTED THE HOOD AND LET IT COOL DOWN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES; THE WARNING HAD DISAPPEARED. I RESUMED DRIVING AT SPEEDS 45 AND UNDER, AND WHILE DRIVING UP A HILL THE TRANSMISSION WHINED VERY LOUDLY AND I LOST SO MUCH POWER THAT THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW TO A STOP ON THE ROAD. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO AVOID BEING STRUCK BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE SLOW DOWN LIGHT WAS NOT ON, BUT I DID RECEIVE ENGINE CODE P0741. IN ANOTHER INCIDENT, I LET IT COOL DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE THEN TOOK AN EXIT. WITH NO SLOW DOWN WARNING, I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WHINED VERY LOUDLY AND THE CAR STOPPED MOVING FORWARD. AN 18 WHEELER WAS ONCOMING AND WAS NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO STOP. THANKFULLY, THE CAR WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT SAFELY OUT OF THE WAY, BUT IT WAS CLOSE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY SIMILAR INCIDENTS. THE TRANSMISSION HAS FREQUENTLY OVERHEATED SINCE I'VE HAD IT WHEN IT HAD ONLY 30,000 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTERS HAVE BEEN REGULARLY CHANGED PER THE OWNER'S MANUAL. WHILE IT HAS A REBUILT TITLE, THERE WAS ONLY EXTERIOR DAMAGE AND NO PART OF THE POWER TRAIN WAS EVER DAMAGED. I DISCOVERED THE SERVICE BULLETIN FROM RESEARCH AND FORUMS. MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE, BUT MOST JUST ASSUMED THE FLUID NEEDED TO BE CHANGED MORE THAN THE MANUAL RECOMMENDED. THE DEFECT AND THE OVERHEATING THAT RESULTS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS I'VE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED. IT'S AN ORIGINAL FACTORY DEFECT THAT IS COMPLETELY UNAFFECTED BY MILEAGE OR WEAR AND TEAR

  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Mitsubishi Lancer vehicles manufactured January 12, 2009, to July 6, 2010, 2009-2010 Outlander vehicles manufactured January 12, 2009, to August 27, 2010, 2010 Lancer Sportback vehicles manufactured June 17, 2009, to June 8, 2010, and 2010 Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured July 14, 2009, to August 4, 2010.
