The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common 2016 Ford Fusion energi problems

The 2016 Ford Fusion Energi has been reported to have several common issues based on complaints from owners.

Transmission problems are also common in the 2016 Ford Fusion Energi. Some drivers have described mechanical stuttering when changing gears, which might be the result of a malfunctioning transmission control module or a symptom of actual gear damage inside the transmission. On vehicles with lower mileage, updating the software in the transmission control modules and powertrain control modules may fix the issue. Internal transmission damage can happen as the mileage rises, and the valve body may need to be replaced or the transmission may need to be completely rebuilt to help stop these problems from happening again.

Interior accessory problems are also a technical issue, especially broken power seat buttons. The solution is typically to replace the button with a new one, which costs less than $100. The ford fusion's lug nuts are known to increase past their original size, and the lug nut wrench will not fit these swollen lug nuts. When lug nuts are tightened too tightly, they swell, so it is crucial to make sure the pcm and the tcm have the most recent software updates whenever major transmission repairs are made.

The 2016 Ford Fusion Energi has eight recalls, which is more than the average for a vehicle of its age. Recalls for fuel tank cracks, failed driver seat welds, defective front seat belts, steering wheel detachment issues, busted shift cables, broken steering gear motors, and doors that might open while driving are all included

. The typical lifespan of the 2016 Ford Fusion is over two hundred thousand miles when maintained properly, and repairpal calculates annual maintenance costs at $550 dollars per year

In summary, the 2016 Ford Fusion Energi has several common issues, including engine problems, transmission issues, interior accessory problems, and recalls. It is essential to be aware of these issues before purchasing the vehicle and ensure that regular maintenance is performed to prolong its lifespan.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 3FA6P0HD2GR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine failed as coolant leaked into cylinder 3 causing a misfire/malfunction. The check engine light came on intermittently along with an alert that said the coolant was over temperature, a week prior to the failure. I then took the vehicle into Tires Plus on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines Iowa where they did a full fuel system check and replaced the spark plug. At the time of taking it in, the warning lights mentioned above were not on. 3 days later the check engine light came on and wouldn’t go off. The other warning light was still popping up intermittently. I then scheduled another appointment with tires plus to check out the car again. Unfortunately 4 days later I was driving the vehicle and all of the sudden the vehicle wouldn’t accelerate properly. The engine was failing. I had the vehicle towed to West Side Auto Pros in Clive, Iowa where they determined that coolant had leaked into the engine. There is already a recall out for the ford fusion eco boost engine of my year. I am just looking to get it extended to my engine type as I do not have the eco boost. I have not had the vehicle inspected by a ford dealership but am happy to have it towed over there if it means that I can get a new engine. My safety was at risk because I was in the interstate when the engine began to fail. I barely made it off the interstate, and into a parking lot. I was at a severe risk of getting hit thanks to the bad engine.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 3FA6P0G78GR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On Saturday 10/5/24 I was attempting to park in my home parking spot and I placed the gear into park and the car shut off but the dash was giving a message that the car was still in drive. The car would not start and when I took my foot off of the brake the car nearly roll backwards into my neighbors car. We had to manually push the car back into the parking spot and turn on the parking brake so that it wouldn’t roll again. After doing some online searching I found that the part that failed had been recalled 3 times. The car was towed to a Ford dealership and was told that the recall was not showing up under the VIN and I would have to pay for a diagnostic fee over $300 plus parts and labor. The 3 recalls that I was able to locate is Campaign/ NHTSA: 18S20/18V471, 19S16/19V362, and22S43/22V413. They are all for the shift cable brushing which is the exact part that broke on my car that caused it to stop.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
  • VIN: 3FA6P0HD9GR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding my 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which I purchased in late June 2024. Despite the ongoing issues with my vehicle, it does not appear on the NHTSA recall list, even though many other Ford owners are experiencing similar problems. Recently, I encountered severe symptoms, including a persistent coolant leak and a puff of white smoke from the tailpipe. Initially, the dealership diagnosed the issue as a simple battery problem related to a cylinder 4 misfire. Following their advice, I spent nearly $500 on a new battery and diagnostic fees. Unfortunately, after driving the car, the engine light reappeared, indicating that the initial diagnosis was insufficient. Upon further inspection, the technician found a puddle of coolant on top of piston 4, which suggests a significant internal problem. This situation mirrors complaints from other Ford owners regarding their EcoBoost engines, even though my hybrid engine is not classified as EcoBoost. I am concerned about the lack of action regarding these issues, especially since they pose serious safety risks. Additionally, I have been informed by Ford that an engine tear-down is necessary to diagnose the full extent of the problem. If deemed not covered under my warranty, I will be responsible for $1,710 for the tear-down alone, with an estimated cost of around $11,000 for a new engine. As a college student with limited income from a part-time job, I cannot afford these expenses. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter and consider the broader implications for all affected Ford vehicles. I look forward to your prompt response. These unresolved issues not only threaten my safety but also potentially endanger others on the road. My repeated attempts to seek support from Ford have been met with inadequate responses, leaving me frustrated and without a clear path forward. I urge the NHTSA to investigate my case and consider a broader review of similar Ford vehicles

Negative 2016 Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Tommie Simonis 2024-07-24

The Energy's range for EV driving is actually 10 to 12 miles per charge, which is less than the advertised 20 miles per charge. Unfortunately, there is no truck space and the climate control is not the best, causing the windshield to fog over all the time unless you keep the defroster on. Other car manufacturers have better technology than the Energy. Additionally, the original purchase price is quite high for what you really get, and resale value is unfortunately quite low. In fact, resale value just 2 months after purchase is about half of the original price.

  2. Tanner Hermiston 2024-07-11

I've owned this car for a year and a half now. I purchased it used and it was in good condition. While there are a few things that have been bothering me enough to consider trading it in, I wanted to share my thoughts in this review. Firstly, the trunk space is quite limited due to the hybrid battery taking up most of the space. Secondly, the buttons for the gas and electric ports are in an awkward spot and are quite sensitive, which can be frustrating. Thirdly, the electric plug-in feature doesn't perform well in the winter and the car struggles in the snow due to its low ground clearance. However, the car has good acceleration and the leather seats are comfortable with decent leg room. It's important to note that the car doesn't come with a tire changing kit, which could be problematic for those living in rural areas. Overall, I would recommend this car for city commuting in the summer, as it has excellent fuel mileage. However, it may not be suitable for those who require more trunk space or live in areas with harsh winters.

  3. Ellis Walter 2024-04-22

Although my experience with this car started off great, unfortunately, the center console navigation system malfunctioned, causing issues with the rear view camera, Bluetooth, AC unit, radio, and other electrical components. Despite my efforts to have it repaired, the dealership was unable to fix the problem, leaving my car in the shop for three weeks. While I cannot recommend this car due to my negative experience, I would suggest considering a Hyundai or Kia, as they have excellent warranty plans. I found Ford Corporate and finance to be unhelpful in resolving the issue, likely due to the fact that electric vehicles require specialized technicians. As a result, I am a very frustrated and unhappy customer.

Positive 2016 Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Ignatius Walker 2024-09-06

You got rid of one after a car accident? That's tough. But it's great to hear that you loved it so much that you bought it again!

  2. Dwight Powlowski 2024-09-04

Before you make a purchase, I recommend test driving cars within your price range. In my experience, the Fusion Titanium Energy stood out in many ways. It has a solid and reassuring feel, unlike some other cars that felt like toys. During my first drive, I was pleasantly surprised by its power and stability, making it feel like a real car. Although I own an SRT 8 Charger 392 and there is no comparison, I must say that the Fusion Energi will still surprise you when you step on the gas. Additionally, the array of available tech features for this car is nothing short of amazing. Overall, I believe that this car is an excellent value and a step up from the competition.

I purchased a 2016 Ford Fusion off-lease in 2019. Although there are some cons, such as limited trunk space and a complicated infotainment system, there are many pros to this car. For instance, the overall MPG is impressive. I drive 37 miles to and from work each day and get 21-26 electric miles, averaging over 80mpg each way, every day. I plug into the 110 outlet at home and the 220 volt charger at work. The car charges in about 2 hours at work and about 7 at home. The Fusion has many features that I really like, such as superb handling, a large and comfortable cabin, and a luxurious feel. The car is also incredibly quiet, even at high speeds, and handles all the bumps and potholes with ease. The styling is also noteworthy, with a design that reminds some people of a Jaguar. The charging rings at the charging port are very helpful to confirm that the car is charging, and the headrest is comfortable for me. The brakes are phenomenal, aggressive, responsive, and very effective when applied. Although some reviews complain about the regenerative brakes, I prefer the Fusion's traditional car feel. I test-drove a Tesla 3, and while it was impressive, I prefer the Fusion, which is more plush for a third of the Tesla S price. If nothing else, the Fusion can go about 600 miles with a full charge and full tank, compared to the Tesla's 240 or so.I love how I can take weekend trips without worrying about travel distance with this car. It's also great that I don't have to worry about reduced mileage in the cold like with Tesla. Although, I do wish the Fusion had a longer range of 35-45 miles on a single charge instead of about 24. I noticed that the car gets the best mileage on city streets and I switch from EV mode to Engine only when I'm on the highway. I wait until I'm on local county roads to use Electric, which pays off as I usually get 2-4 more miles due to braking on local roads with 35-45 mile per hour speed limits. Despite a few minor complaints, this is a phenomenal car and my first entry into the PHEV. Overall, I'm delighted with the car. By the way, it's worth noting that few cars come with full-size tires or even a spare tire anymore, especially hybrids as companies try to keep the weight down. Although acceleration isn't great, it's much better than I expected, and I like to drive fast, even passing people on local/county roads because they're going 40mph in a 45-50mph zone. This car is capable of passing in EV mode or gas.

I recently purchased a 2016 Titanium Plug-in Hybrid with leather seats. I was looking for a car with good gas mileage and a comfortable ride, and this car has exceeded my expectations. I want to thank everyone for their input on this car, as the overall reviews were spot on. The ride is quiet both in town and on the highway, and while the struts are a bit clunky as predicted, the gas mileage is as posted by Edmunds. The trunk is a bit small, as stated in other reviews, but the car is comfortable and easy to drive. The steering is solid and the brakes are easy to get used to. The car is predictable and has enough power for everyday driving. The instrument cluster shows what and how much power you are using, which is a nice touch. After two weeks and a thousand miles, I have found that the touch screen Nav/radio/heat/phone controls are not very intuitive while driving at 70 MPH. However, the manual radio and heat controls save you some frustration as you can adjust things on the fly without pulling up the needed pages on the touch screen. I bought the Ford for the hybrid

We purchased this car brand new in February 2016 and it has been a fantastic ride ever since. The interior quality is top-notch and we got a great deal on it, paying only $29,000 after a $4,000 federal tax credit and a sales tax exemption for electric and plug-in vehicles under $35,000 in Washington State. This is a significant saving compared to gas-only luxury sedans that would have cost us over $40,000. While the trunk space is a bit small, it still fits our groceries and carry-on luggage for two people. We used to get 15 to 22 miles in EV mode, which was better in the summer months, but now it's down to about 10 miles. However, over the 8 years we've owned the car, we've averaged an impressive 75 MPG. We've had a couple of repairs, including a new throttle body and a new engine off pump for the transmission, which cost around $1600 each. While this is a bit higher than the repair costs for our previous Acuras, the car is still in excellent shape with only 55,000 miles on it. We're now debating whether to replace the motor drive battery pack for $7,500 or buy a newer car that's 1 to 4 years old. While I'm leaning towards replacing the battery pack, my wife is considering a newer car. We'll miss the convenience of only having to go to the gas station once every 4 to 6 weeks, but we're excited to see what the future holds.
