The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).
The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common Ford Fusion energi problems
The Ford Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan produced from 2013 to 2020, has faced several common issues that owners have reported. The most significant problem category for the Fusion Energi is electrical issues, with the 2013 model year being the worst due to its high repair costs and problems at lower mileage.
One of the most common issues across various model years is a loss of steering, which appeared frequently in the 2013 model year. This problem can be expensive to fix, with an average cost of $2,200 and an average mileage of 51,000 miles.
The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi also had issues with the transmission, including harsh or delayed shifting, squeaks and creaks when bumping or turning, swollen lug nuts, and transmission oil leaks. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and affect the overall driving experience.
Another common issue with the Ford Fusion Energi is rodent damage, which is caused by the vehicle's electrical system components being attractive to rodents that chew on the wires. This issue can lead to electrical problems and require costly repairs.
When considering purchasing a used Ford Fusion Energi, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and consider the most reliable model years. The 2013 model year is generally considered the worst due to its high repair costs and frequent problems at lower mileage. It is always a good idea to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or common issues before making a purchase.
What is the problem with the Ford Fusion PHEV?
Don't Charge Ford Fusion Plug-In Hybrids Until a Recall Repair Is Done, the Automaker Says. Ford is recalling nearly 15,000 Fusion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedans from the 2019 and 2020 model years because they may not start, lose power when driving, and be at risk of catching fire.
What is the Ford Fusion Energi lawsuit?
This class action concerns the alleged negligent and dangerous design, manufacture and installation of the high-voltage battery energy control module in the 2019-2020 Ford Fusion PHEV vehicles. In June 2023, Ford Canada and Ford US disclosed the dangerous defect and commenced a recall.
How long will Ford Fusion Energi last?
Although the Ford Fusion Energi doesn't have a great range, it can last a long time. According to enginepatrol.com, the Ford Fusion Energi will last 200,000-300,000 miles if it receives proper care and maintenance.
Is the Ford Fusion Energi a good car?
Very comfortable, affordable, efficient vehicle. The Ford Fusion Energi is a plug in hybrid (PHEV). It will travel up to 20 miles on electricity only, then it switches to standard hybrid mode. Great commuter car.

It's not often that you find a plugin hybrid vehicle that excels in all three main components of a great car: looks, fuel efficiency, and fun to drive. This car has it all! I've been the proud owner of this car for just over a month now, and I've already driven 900 miles without having to fill up my tank since the dealership filled it for me at the time of sale. How amazing is that? I simply plug it in every night using a standard household outlet, and that charge alone gets me to work in the morning and almost all the way home at night. The touch screen display is vibrant and user-friendly, and the dashboard can be configured to several different looks depending on what information you want to display.

Excellent ride in all respects! The only possible drawback would be with the trunk if a full-size trunk is needed because the battery takes up about half of the typical trunk space. However, you do get a large glove compartment, storage in the center console and doors, and use of the entire rear seat if it's not occupied. For families that often require the use of an entire trunk with the rear seat occupied, this would need to be a consideration in the purchase of electric vehicles such as the Fusion Energi. :)

I never thought I would buy a Ford, having always driven Toyotas and Hondas. However, after reading Consumer Reports' increasing praise for Ford, I decided to give it a try. I purchased all the options, primarily because I hate plate covers where buttons should be, taunting with features that might have been. First and foremost, the fuel economy is incredible. I live exactly 20 miles away from work and am able to charge at both work and home. The Fusion makes it round trip on electric alone. Sometimes it gets up to 24 mile range, if in traffic. Sometimes it's closer to 17, like when the a/c is on. I last filled up about 4 weeks ago, driven about 400 miles since, and still have a full tank. On hybrid mode, without plugging in, the mpg is around 40-50. Still not too bad for a large sedan. The battery takes up a lot of room though. I can fit one suitcase in the trunk, one on the back seat and still have room for Captain Henry Gingersnaps Pomeranian carrier in the other half of the back seat. I went with the Fusion because it was by far more comfortable than the Camry or Prius hybrids. It's very sophisticated inside, with nice materials that fit together very well. They got a serious design master who thoughtfully crafted every part of this car inside and out. It just looks absolutely incredible, and before purchasing I often mistook the Fusion for an Aston Martin. Everything is where you would expect it, so operating all the functions is immediately familiar. I even found the computer system easy to use, and love that there are still real buttons for most used features of the air and radio. This was a huge deal for me, coming from a 2012 Honda with the worst, most antiquated system ever. A few of the Fusion's more advanced features take a bit more practice, but once you get the hang of them, they're great. The lane keep system may not work perfectly, but overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase. The car is great at reminding you to keep your hands on the wheel, which is a nice feature. However, if you let go, the car will quickly steer you into the next lane, which can be a bit alarming. It's especially helpful for those who have a light grip. Additionally, the car is very vocal about taking breaks, and it's usually right. When the driver alert starts flashing, it's a good time to take a break. I personally enjoy taking breaks anyway. The radar cruise control is really nice to use, but it can be finicky at times. For example, if a car pulls into your lane on the freeway, the Fusion will continue to accelerate until the other vehicle is directly in front of you. Sometimes, it even starts flashing the emergency brake red lights at you while it's still speeding up! However, most of the time it works decently well and is very convenient. Overall, I am incredibly happy with my new Ford Fusion.

Hi there! We decided to go for the Energi because we mostly drive within 10 miles one way and live in a hilly area. Although I'm not getting the full 20 miles on a charge, I try to coast a lot and it's been a true story. We've had the vehicle for just over a month and I've put just under 850 miles on it. Believe it or not, I'm getting 107 mpg! I'm a bit obsessed with this and it's bugging my wife some, but I really want to see what it can do. My engineer neighbor says I should be able to get unlimited mileage if I keep it in electric mode. Here in CA, we get a $1500 rebate and the Feds give $4007, so it's a great option for us. However, if you don't typically drive short distances like I do, I'm not convinced that the Energi would be the best choice for you. But definitely consider the hybrid, I like the style too!

I really like this car! I've had it for 6 months now. The pros are that if you drive short distances, it gets great gas mileage. My best was 115 MPG! The ride is nice (I came from a Lexus) and it handles well. I also love the auto brights. However, there are some cons to consider. The dashboard is coming apart and the heated steering wheel is a bit of a pain to turn on. Additionally, the automatic back up drive does not work at all, so please do not try it! The radio sound is just okay. During the first month, it charged for 20 miles on a full charge, but 6 months later, the maximum charge I can get is for 13 miles.

My car lost power on the freeway while I was driving in the car pool lane with no shoulder. Although I had plenty of gas, it did not switch over. The dealer updated the modules, but unfortunately, there seems to be a recurring problem with the modules on this car. I have had to update them numerous times for everything from the windows not working properly to not switching over to gas power and time of use charging option. Unfortunately, I am no longer under warranty due to the mileage and am being charged to update modules that seem to malfunction randomly. It's frustrating to think that this car could end up costing me a small fortune just in updates. I hope the dealer can find a more permanent solution to this issue.

Over the past two years, I have only visited a gas station six times and used 36 gallons of gas, with an average MPG of 168 for my short trips. Charging my car overnight using a 120 Volt outlet costs me only 7.1 cents per KW. I have had to visit the Ford dealer service department four times, once for a tire fix, twice for service, and once for a yearly state inspection. Although I have a recall on the car's modem and a quarter of the light ring around the charging plug has burned out, both issues are covered under warranty. To date, my total cost of ownership has been under $300.00, and I have driven just over 7000 miles. While I wish the car had more trunk space and a spare tire, I cannot say anything bad about my Ford PHEV. It is both classy and comfortable, transporting us to and from any place we choose to go. I hope that Ford will offer a larger battery and more space to haul in a future model, but overall, I am very satisfied with my 2016 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. It gets over 88 MPG, and I have only put 125 miles on the odometer since I bought it on May 23rd, 2015. Although I miss the Ice Blue color of my previous car, the White color I chose is still a great option. I have done the math and found that charging the battery on 120-volt house current is cheaper than using NRG EVGO or Blink 220-volt charging stations. While the truck space is limited, and there is no spare tire, I got the car at a reduced price that I can live with. Thank you, Ford, for providing such a great car, even though you are discontinuing the model in 2020.I really enjoy driving my Ford Fusion Energi, despite the two recalls it had, the last one being to fix a steering wheel bolt. The car has great mileage, over 180 MPG, which is fantastic. However, I am considering trading it in before its value drops, and unfortunately, there are no replacement deals for the next PHEV that Ford might offer. I am currently looking at the Chrysler Pacifica Limited PHEV, which has a larger battery and more space for passengers and cargo. If you're in the market for a hybrid gas/electric vehicle, I highly recommend the Chrysler Pacifica Limited Hybrid. It offers great mileage and interior space, making it a smart choice. The Pacifica Hybrid has a range of 566 miles, which is impressive.

My battery has died 5 times in the past 28 months, even after being replaced by the dealer.

The plug-in option is not very practical as it has limited battery capacity and is only useful for short distances. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid has very little trunk space. The car also has some issues with the windshield fogging over and the lane sensing feature can be annoying. However, it is important to note that these are common issues with many vehicles and can be resolved with proper maintenance. While the car may not be suitable for everyone, it is still a reliable and well-made vehicle. As with any car purchase, it is important to do your research and consider all factors before making a decision.

The car had to be towed back to the dealership twice within a 3-month period due to a completely dead 12v battery. The first time, the dealership fixed it and attributed the issue to a software problem. However, the second time, the issue still persists and the car is still at the dealership. Despite attempting to jump-start the battery, the rear trunk remains inaccessible and the electronic transmission is locked. Additionally, the doors are locked and can only be accessed using the emergency key, which presents another challenge. With only a few months left on the lease and 14k miles on the car, any further issues with the battery will result in the Lemon Law in California being invoked. It is regrettable that the next person who purchases this car will have to deal with these issues.
