The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common Ford Fusion energi problems

The Ford Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan produced from 2013 to 2020, has faced several common issues that owners have reported. The most significant problem category for the Fusion Energi is electrical issues, with the 2013 model year being the worst due to its high repair costs and problems at lower mileage.

One of the most common issues across various model years is a loss of steering, which appeared frequently in the 2013 model year. This problem can be expensive to fix, with an average cost of $2,200 and an average mileage of 51,000 miles.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi also had issues with the transmission, including harsh or delayed shifting, squeaks and creaks when bumping or turning, swollen lug nuts, and transmission oil leaks. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and affect the overall driving experience.

Another common issue with the Ford Fusion Energi is rodent damage, which is caused by the vehicle's electrical system components being attractive to rodents that chew on the wires. This issue can lead to electrical problems and require costly repairs.

When considering purchasing a used Ford Fusion Energi, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and consider the most reliable model years. The 2013 model year is generally considered the worst due to its high repair costs and frequent problems at lower mileage. It is always a good idea to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or common issues before making a purchase.

  • Model: Ford Fusion energi 2019
  • Report Received Date: 2019-02-15
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Fusion Energi Hybrid models. The affected vehicles may not adequately protect against direct and indirect contact of high voltage sources during normal operation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 305, "Electric-Powered Vehicles: Electrolyte spillage and electrical shock protection."
  • Consequence: Potential contact with high voltage sources increases the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a Bus Electrical Center (BEC) cover over the high voltage fuses, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C05.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on December 15, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14C11.

Latest negative Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Joshua Lockman 2025-06-12

    Vehicle year: 2013

The car had to be towed back to the dealership twice within a 3-month period due to a completely dead 12v battery. The first time, the dealership fixed it and attributed the issue to a software problem. However, the second time, the car is still at the dealership and jump-starting the battery did not work. Unfortunately, without electricity, accessing the rear trunk and the electronic transmission is impossible, and the doors can only be unlocked using the emergency key. With only a few months left on the lease and 14k miles, another battery issue would be unacceptable. Therefore, if this issue persists, I will have to invoke the Lemon Law in California. It is regrettable that the next person who buys this car may face similar issues.

My battery has died 5 times in the past 28 months, even after being replaced by the dealer.

  4. Lennie Turcotte 2025-05-08

    Vehicle year: 2017

Over the past two years, I have only visited a gas station six times and used 36 gallons of gas, with an average MPG of 168 for my short trips. Charging my car overnight using a 120 Volt outlet costs me only 7.1 cents per KW. I have had to visit the Ford dealer service department four times, once for a tire fix, twice for service, and once for a yearly state inspection. Although I have a recall on the car's modem and a quarter of the light ring around the charging plug has burned out, both issues are covered under warranty. To date, my total cost of ownership has been under $300.00, and I have driven just over 7000 miles. While I wish the car had more trunk space and a spare tire, I cannot say anything bad about my Ford PHEV. It is both classy and comfortable, transporting us to and from any place we choose to go. I hope that Ford will offer a larger battery and more space to haul in a future model, but overall, I am very satisfied with my 2016 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. It gets over 88 MPG, and I have only put 125 miles on the odometer since I bought it on May 23rd, 2015. Although I miss the Ice Blue color of my previous car, the White color I chose is still a great option. I have done the math and found that charging the battery on 120-volt house current is cheaper than using NRG EVGO or Blink 220-volt charging stations. While the truck space is limited, and there is no spare tire, I got the car at a reduced price that I can live with. Thank you, Ford, for providing such a great car, even though you are discontinuing the model in 2020.I really enjoy driving my Ford Fusion Energi, despite the two recalls it had, the last one being to fix a steering wheel bolt. The car has great mileage, over 180 MPG, which is fantastic. However, I am considering trading it in before its value drops, and unfortunately, there are no replacement deals for the next PHEV that Ford might offer. I am currently looking at the Chrysler Pacifica Limited PHEV, which has a larger battery and more space for passengers and cargo. If you're in the market for a hybrid gas/electric vehicle, I highly recommend the Chrysler Pacifica Limited Hybrid. It offers great mileage and interior space, making it a smart choice. The Pacifica Hybrid has a range of 566 miles, which is impressive.

If you're in the market for a plug-in gas electric hybrid, it's important to consider the quality of the battery. Different companies manufacture the batteries, and some are better than others. For example, LG chemical batteries have the least deterioration, while Panasonic/Sanyo batteries have a lesser quality as far as charge deterioration rate. Charge deterioration rate refers to how much of the original charge the battery can hold after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, etc. It's worth investing in a car with the best low charge deterioration rates, as the battery is the most important part of all electric or gas/electric plug-in hybrids.

  2. Isadore Satterfield 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 2016

Hi there! We decided to go for the Energi because we mostly drive within 10 miles one way and live in a hilly area. Although I'm not getting the full 20 miles on a charge, I try to coast a lot and it's been a true story. We've had the vehicle for just over a month and I've put just under 850 miles on it. Believe it or not, I'm getting 107 mpg! I'm a bit obsessed with this and it's bugging my wife some, but I really want to see what it can do. My engineer neighbor says I should be able to get unlimited mileage if I keep it in electric mode. Here in CA, we get a $1500 rebate and the Feds give $4007, so it's a great option for us. However, if you don't typically drive short distances like I do, I'm not convinced that the Energi would be the best choice for you. But definitely consider the hybrid, I like the style too!

I've had my 2013 Ford Fusion Energi for one year and 10,000 miles now and I'd like to share my thoughts on what I like and dislike about it. I'm happy to report that after 2 1/2 years, I still love it! With an average of 80 miles per gallon, it's been a reliable and efficient car for me. The adaptive cruise control is a great feature that I really enjoy, especially on the freeway where I can set it a little above the speed limit and let the car do the rest. When driving in full electric mode, it's incredibly quiet and smooth. I'm so satisfied with it that I would definitely buy another one. After over 3 1/2 years of ownership, my average mpg is now 85. Since we're retired, we mostly use it around town, which means it runs mostly on electric. When we bought it in 2013, we wanted a tan leather interior, but the Titanium model only came in black, so we got the SE. Next time, we'll definitely get the Titanium model with the start button so we don't have to use the key.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! It's great to hear that you still love your car after 4 years of ownership. The interior sounds really well done and it's impressive how quiet the car is. It's also good to know that the seats are comfortable and have helped with your back and shoulder pain. The transition between battery and ICE sounds seamless and it's impressive how far you can go between gas fill-ups. It's a shame that the traction on ice in Ohio winters is only adequate, but perhaps different tires would help. Overall, it sounds like a great car for commuting and it has a stylish design. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

  5. Gabriel Boehm 2025-06-03

    Vehicle year: 2014

Great car! It's been reliable so far, with only the need to replace tires and shocks, and regular oil changes every 10k miles.
