Ford Fusion energi problems

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.
The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).
The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common Ford Fusion energi problems
The Ford Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan produced from 2013 to 2020, has faced several common issues that owners have reported. The most significant problem category for the Fusion Energi is electrical issues, with the 2013 model year being the worst due to its high repair costs and problems at lower mileage.
One of the most common issues across various model years is a loss of steering, which appeared frequently in the 2013 model year. This problem can be expensive to fix, with an average cost of $2,200 and an average mileage of 51,000 miles.
The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi also had issues with the transmission, including harsh or delayed shifting, squeaks and creaks when bumping or turning, swollen lug nuts, and transmission oil leaks. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and affect the overall driving experience.
Another common issue with the Ford Fusion Energi is rodent damage, which is caused by the vehicle's electrical system components being attractive to rodents that chew on the wires. This issue can lead to electrical problems and require costly repairs.
When considering purchasing a used Ford Fusion Energi, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and consider the most reliable model years. The 2013 model year is generally considered the worst due to its high repair costs and frequent problems at lower mileage. It is always a good idea to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or common issues before making a purchase.
What is the problem with the Ford Fusion PHEV?
Don't Charge Ford Fusion Plug-In Hybrids Until a Recall Repair Is Done, the Automaker Says. Ford is recalling nearly 15,000 Fusion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedans from the 2019 and 2020 model years because they may not start, lose power when driving, and be at risk of catching fire.
What is the Ford Fusion Energi lawsuit?
This class action concerns the alleged negligent and dangerous design, manufacture and installation of the high-voltage battery energy control module in the 2019-2020 Ford Fusion PHEV vehicles. In June 2023, Ford Canada and Ford US disclosed the dangerous defect and commenced a recall.
How long will Ford Fusion Energi last?
Although the Ford Fusion Energi doesn't have a great range, it can last a long time. According to enginepatrol.com, the Ford Fusion Energi will last 200,000-300,000 miles if it receives proper care and maintenance.
Is the Ford Fusion Energi a good car?
Very comfortable, affordable, efficient vehicle. The Ford Fusion Energi is a plug in hybrid (PHEV). It will travel up to 20 miles on electricity only, then it switches to standard hybrid mode. Great commuter car.

Vehicle year: 2015
I drive a Ford Fusion Energi as my commuter car. My daily drive consists of 16 miles each way in stop-and-go traffic on surface streets and freeways. I live in a hilly area, but going to work, I drive all-electric with brake regen down hills. It's a very quiet ride. Although I don't charge up at work due to the unavailability of a 110-volt outlet outside and a short extension cord, I charge it up nightly in my garage using a 110-volt charger. After a month of driving 865 miles, the dashboard says my average is 90.4 mpge (less if climate on). The Adaptive Cruise Control feature reduces my commuter stress, and the Sony stereo sounds great using Sirius or streaming music via Bluetooth phone using Spotify. I'm really enjoying my new tech car, and my commute costs are much less. Update: It corners really well, and it's fun to drive. It looks good, and I don't have an issue with the trunk size. It's never been an issue for me since I don't carry skis or haul stuff. I have another car for that. After 25000 miles, it's still going really well with no mechanical issues or failures. There were a couple of minor recalls that didn't affect me. I drove the car 2000 miles from Seattle, WA to L.A. in Southern California and back, and there were no issues. It's a solid car. The auto parallel parking feature is awesome, and I'm getting 70 mpg lifetime average. It's a great commuter car, and most of my trips are in the suburbs, 10 miles each way, so most trips use no gasoline. The transition from electric-only to gasoline-hybrid is smooth and seamless. When I need acceleration, I punch it, and the 200 horsepower comes on quickly with lots of torque. I still charge it up every night in my garage (suburb) on 110 volts. I never bought the 220-volt charger because I didn't need it. I sometimes charge at public charging stations, but not very often. I never have range anxiety because it has a 14-gallon gas tank, which I use very little of. I have changed the oil twice in 25000 miles, and it has an intelligent oil monitor. The car has 25000 miles, but the gasoline engine has only 5000 miles, so maintenance costs are really low. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your plug-in hybrid car! Hey there! I've been driving my vehicle for 3 weeks now and I'm thrilled to say that I haven't had to visit the gas station yet, even with 850 miles on the clock! Can you believe it? The interior of the car is really nicely done, with super comfortable and supportive seats. The fit and finish is right up there with entry-level luxury vehicles, and the technology is really advanced. I opted for the adaptive cruise and blind spot detection system, which even alerts you if you're in danger of a crash. The exterior styling is also really distinctive. If you're considering a plug-in Prius or plug-in Accord, I highly recommend checking out the Fusion!

My spouse leased a 2015 SE plug-in, and at first, I didn't like it very much. There were some irritating things about it, such as the limited trunk space and the discomfort I experienced getting in and out of the car due to my back issues. However, as I started driving it more, I began to appreciate its features. When my 10-year-old Prius hybrid got totaled, I started considering purchasing a new car. I was interested in upgrading to a plug-in and wanted the latest safety features. The Prius Prime and the Kia Niro were on my list, but the prices, even with tax incentives, were high. I eliminated the Prius Prime because the passenger seat didn't adjust to help with my back issues, but the Niro had that feature. Then I discovered that the Fusion's passenger seat adjusted fully, which was necessary when my spouse and I went somewhere together. Another important feature came into play when I was out of town and accidentally locked everything in the trunk and car. Thankfully, I remembered the door code and was able to get back in with the help of a passing shopper's phone. What a stress-saver! We turned in the 2015 and found a used 2016 with only 24,000 miles in great shape. I plug it in as much as possible, and the average mileage is up to 59. It has every safety feature and accessory I could ever hope for. I hope to have this car at least as long as I had my Prius. It is nice getting back to a Ford. Update 9-2019: I have owned this car for 1.5 years and put 41,000 miles on it. After going through a full hard winter, the MPG went down to 47 but is climbing up with warmer weather to 50.5mpg. There are some annoying issues, but they are the same as other 'smart' cars.We sometimes turn off the lane feature as it can be distracting in construction areas where the lines are confusing. Although, the wear on the driver's seat has been disappointing as it is flaking off. It is likely bonded leather. I brought it to the attention of Performance Ford in Omaha to contact Ford about it before the warranty was out, but unfortunately, they were unable to help. Despite this, I really enjoy my car and constantly plug it in. I can drive on just the battery 30-40% of the time. Currently, I have a love-love relationship with my car, which has 70,000 miles. The last few years have been interesting as the garage got full and the car was outside. Mice have been chewing on the wires, which has cost us over $1000 to fix. However, a non-dealership found the chewed-on wires for less than $300, whereas a dealership quoted me over $2000 to replace a bunch of stuff. I just need to get my garage cleaned out and put rodent deterrents in the car. The regular battery died a few months ago, and it sat for a few months before getting it replaced. Be warned. The first time I got it out on a highway, all of the warnings from the year before showed up, and I lost power steering. We took it in, and the third time it was started after this incident, they couldn't find the issue anymore. The car seemed fine, and we are hoping it had something to do with the battery and the computer. We shall see if it shows up again. My husband is bugging me to trade, but it has two dings on the body now, and nothing is falling off, so I am just going to keep driving it. I hear used cars are still priced higher than I want to deal with.

If you're in the market for a plug-in gas electric hybrid, it's important to consider the quality of the battery. Different companies manufacture the batteries, and some are better than others. For example, LG chemical batteries have the least deterioration, while Panasonic/Sanyo batteries have a lesser quality as far as charge deterioration rate. Charge deterioration rate refers to how much of the original charge the battery can hold after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, etc. It's worth investing in a car with a battery that has a good low charge deterioration rate, as the battery is the most important part of all electric or gas/electric plug-in hybrids.

UPDATE: Hi there! Just wanted to share some exciting news about my car. Over the past 21 months, I've driven 21,000 miles and have been able to achieve 45 MPG in Hybrid mode and an impressive 70 MPG combined when using half my miles in electric mode. When driving locally without AC or heat, I can get up to 28 miles on a single charge! I've found that heat uses more battery power than AC, so in the winter, I use hybrid mode in the morning when it's very cold and electric mode in the afternoon. The car is incredibly quiet and the transition from electric to gas engine and back is seamless. Plus, the electric AC is amazing at quickly cooling the car. If you travel less than 25 miles a day, you can go all electric all the time (or 50 miles if you have a charger at work). Overall, this car is a great commuter car with incredible gas mileage for a mid-size sedan. I've had the car for over 2 months and have driven 1800 miles so far. I'm getting very close to the EPA figures of 42 MPG in hybrid mode (that's both city driving and highway driving) and 22 miles per battery charge. If you use the heater on cold days, you'll only get 18 miles per charge. You can switch between three modes - automatic, Electric only - EV, or hybrid mode. Plus, Ford dealers are offering great rebates, and with the $4200 federal tax credit, I paid almost the same as a regular Fusion with the same options. Electric mode is amazing for driving around town - I can go the entire weekend without using the gas engine! The Electric mode (EV) is quick from 0-30, although it slows down from 30-60. However, this car was designed to provide high gas mileage and a great ride. The transition between the electric and gas engine is seamless, which is truly amazing. Of course, it only offers half the trunk space, but that was already expected. While the handling around turns is not as good as the 4cyl Fusion, it is still good. This is a heavy car, so the handling is not as responsive as the 4cyl Fusion, but the ride is just as good. (I rented a 4cyl Fusion for two weeks and did a lot of driving in it). Overall, I believe this car is an excellent value with the dealer rebates and Federal tax credit.

The Ford Fusion Energi may not meet everyone's needs, but it has some great features that make it a solid choice for those who prioritize fuel efficiency. While the battery range may be lower than advertised, it still offers a respectable 12 miles on a single charge. It's important to note that using certain features like the radio or heater may decrease the range further. As with any vehicle, it's important to do your research and determine if it's the right fit for you. While other automakers may offer more features, the Ford Fusion Energi has its own unique strengths. It's unfortunate that the trade-in value may not be as high as some would hope, but that's a common issue with many vehicles. Overall, the Ford Fusion Energi is a solid choice for those looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle.

The plug-in option is not very practical as it has limited battery capacity and is only useful for short distances. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid has very little trunk space. The car also has some issues with the windshield fogging over and the lane sensing feature can be annoying. However, it is important to note that these are common issues with many vehicles and can be resolved with proper maintenance. While the car may not be suitable for everyone, it is still a reliable and well-made vehicle. As with any car purchase, it is important to do your research and consider all factors before making a decision.

So I have had this car for about 2 years now. I must have a serious Lemon considering all the great reviews. My Fusion has had one electrical failure after another. Over two years the car has sat in service more days than I have been able to drive it. IF the car worked, it could be great. It is very comfortable and has an excellent ride. However there is NO TRUNK for those who actually would use such a thing. The battery pack takes up the full space, so you can fit about a rolled Yoga mat and a few bags of groceries in the trunk, then everything else will be in the back seat space. I really want to love this car, but considering all the major mechanical failures, I can only say I am very lucky I leased and did not buy.

The car had to be towed back to the dealership twice within a 3-month period due to a completely dead 12v battery. The first time, the dealership fixed it and attributed the issue to a software problem. However, the second time, the car is still at the dealership and jump-starting the battery did not work. Unfortunately, without electricity, accessing the rear trunk and the electronic transmission is impossible, and the doors can only be unlocked using the emergency key. With only a few months left on the lease and 14k miles, another battery issue would be unacceptable. Therefore, if this issue persists, I will have to invoke the Lemon Law in California. It is regrettable that the next person who buys this car may face similar issues.
