The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common Ford Fusion energi problems

The Ford Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan produced from 2013 to 2020, has faced several common issues that owners have reported. The most significant problem category for the Fusion Energi is electrical issues, with the 2013 model year being the worst due to its high repair costs and problems at lower mileage.

One of the most common issues across various model years is a loss of steering, which appeared frequently in the 2013 model year. This problem can be expensive to fix, with an average cost of $2,200 and an average mileage of 51,000 miles.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi also had issues with the transmission, including harsh or delayed shifting, squeaks and creaks when bumping or turning, swollen lug nuts, and transmission oil leaks. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and affect the overall driving experience.

Another common issue with the Ford Fusion Energi is rodent damage, which is caused by the vehicle's electrical system components being attractive to rodents that chew on the wires. This issue can lead to electrical problems and require costly repairs.

When considering purchasing a used Ford Fusion Energi, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and consider the most reliable model years. The 2013 model year is generally considered the worst due to its high repair costs and frequent problems at lower mileage. It is always a good idea to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or common issues before making a purchase.

Latest negative Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Antone Heidenreich 2025-08-03

    Vehicle year: 2018

So I have had this car for about 2 years now. I must have a serious Lemon considering all the great reviews. My Fusion has had one electrical failure after another. Over two years the car has sat in service more days than I have been able to drive it. IF the car worked, it could be great. It is very comfortable and has an excellent ride. However there is NO TRUNK for those who actually would use such a thing. The battery pack takes up the full space, so you can fit about a rolled Yoga mat and a few bags of groceries in the trunk, then everything else will be in the back seat space. I really want to love this car, but considering all the major mechanical failures, I can only say I am very lucky I leased and did not buy.

  2. Joshua Lockman 2025-06-12

    Vehicle year: 2013

The car had to be towed back to the dealership twice within a 3-month period due to a completely dead 12v battery. The first time, the dealership fixed it and attributed the issue to a software problem. However, the second time, the car is still at the dealership and jump-starting the battery did not work. Unfortunately, without electricity, accessing the rear trunk and the electronic transmission is impossible, and the doors can only be unlocked using the emergency key. With only a few months left on the lease and 14k miles, another battery issue would be unacceptable. Therefore, if this issue persists, I will have to invoke the Lemon Law in California. It is regrettable that the next person who buys this car may face similar issues.

My battery has died 5 times in the past 28 months, even after being replaced by the dealer.

  5. Lennie Turcotte 2025-05-08

    Vehicle year: 2017

Over the past two years, I have only visited a gas station six times and used 36 gallons of gas, with an average MPG of 168 for my short trips. Charging my car overnight using a 120 Volt outlet costs me only 7.1 cents per KW. I have had to visit the Ford dealer service department four times, once for a tire fix, twice for service, and once for a yearly state inspection. Although I have a recall on the car's modem and a quarter of the light ring around the charging plug has burned out, both issues are covered under warranty. To date, my total cost of ownership has been under $300.00, and I have driven just over 7000 miles. While I wish the car had more trunk space and a spare tire, I cannot say anything bad about my Ford PHEV. It is both classy and comfortable, transporting us to and from any place we choose to go. I hope that Ford will offer a larger battery and more space to haul in a future model, but overall, I am very satisfied with my 2016 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. It gets over 88 MPG, and I have only put 125 miles on the odometer since I bought it on May 23rd, 2015. Although I miss the Ice Blue color of my previous car, the White color I chose is still a great option. I have done the math and found that charging the battery on 120-volt house current is cheaper than using NRG EVGO or Blink 220-volt charging stations. While the truck space is limited, and there is no spare tire, I got the car at a reduced price that I can live with. Thank you, Ford, for providing such a great car, even though you are discontinuing the model in 2020.I really enjoy driving my Ford Fusion Energi, despite the two recalls it had, the last one being to fix a steering wheel bolt. The car has great mileage, over 180 MPG, which is fantastic. However, I am considering trading it in before its value drops, and unfortunately, there are no replacement deals for the next PHEV that Ford might offer. I am currently looking at the Chrysler Pacifica Limited PHEV, which has a larger battery and more space for passengers and cargo. If you're in the market for a hybrid gas/electric vehicle, I highly recommend the Chrysler Pacifica Limited Hybrid. It offers great mileage and interior space, making it a smart choice. The Pacifica Hybrid has a range of 566 miles, which is impressive.

Latest positive Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Abe Howell 2025-08-23

    Vehicle year: 2017

I love my 2016 Fusion Energi SE! It's been a great replacement for my old 2005 Hyundai Tucson V6. I opted for the base model with no extra features, and I'm so glad I did because the standard technology package is so robust compared to my old car - which had a tape cassette player (yikes!). Although the window sticker gas mileage changed on the 2016 model year at my time of purchase (108 mpge - 88 mpge), the 88 mpge was still a large enough improvement over my 21 mpg Hyundai. I consistently get a 30-35 mile pure electric range on this vehicle from a single full charge, plus I can still drive in electric only mode an additional few miles, if needed, on the hybrid battery when my electric battery is fully depleted. The car drives like a dream and is sooo amazingly smooth, even when the gasoline engine kicks on. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of room for drivers with long legs and passengers to sit behind them. The quality of materials in the vehicle are top notch. The user controls and touch screen work well and are responsive. The voice controlled features are wonderful! I can switch the radio/satellite stations verbally, adjust the temperature verbally, make phone calls, etc. without ever touching a button on the touch screen or control panel. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!Hi there! I'm a proud owner of the electric Energi and I live in Arizona near Phoenix. I did a quick check of my utility rates and found out that it only costs me an average of 42 cents a day to charge my car from empty to full using my utility's electric car rate plan. The best part is that the car charges on the standard supplied charger in less than 6 hours, usually around 5 1/2 hours for a complete charge. Partial charges take even less time, which is super convenient. At first, I thought I needed to purchase the rapid charger, but I found out that the supplied charger is more than enough. The My Ford Mobile app for phones and the web-based version for PCs came activated upon purchase, and I believe new owners receive 5 years of free access. The app provides updated trip data and charge data that is remarkably accurate. You can see the existing range on the batteries, if the car is charging, where mobile charge stations are located nearby, your driver stats/rankings, etc. You can even lock/unlock your vehicle from the app, turn it on/off, and get an exact GPS location on your vehicle at any moment in time. I haven't had any equipment malfunctions with the vehicle or the app/web service, which is a huge relief. The trunk space is adequate for grocery shopping, and I've even managed to fit two mid-size suitcases in there. Overall, I can confidently say that this is the best car I have ever owned. It rides nicer than any BMW, Lexus, Lincoln, or Prius that I have ever ridden in or driven. I still can't believe the value for the money, and with the $4000 federal tax credit for the electric capability of the vehicle, it is priced almost the same as the hybrid-only version. If you're on the fence about this car or uncertain if you should purchase the electric version or the hybrid-only version, I highly recommend taking a chance on the electric Energi. It may exceed your expectations, just like it did mine. By the way, I've owned this car for 3 years now and I still love it!I had some issues with charging my vehicle after the modem replacement, but they were finally resolved. The original modem was no longer being serviced, so Ford asked owners to bring their cars in for installation of a new supported modem. However, after I received the new modem, I faced extensive issues with programming the car's charging intervals using both the app, the website, and the vehicle dash controls. It took Ford almost a full year to solve the problem. Despite the frustration, I must say that Ford was very respectful and professional throughout the process. Although my local dealer was not as professional and accommodating, Ford corporate took over and made sure things were handled and my vehicle was repaired. Shortly thereafter, about 2.5 years into owning the vehicle, my electric charging cord malfunctioned and my vehicle consistently failed to charge overnight. However, a simple warranty swap out of that part solved the issue immediately. I still continue to get electric range capability far in excess of what Ford advertises. It's summer in Arizona so I'm running my AC at all times and I continue to get 28-31 miles of electric range. I absolutely love this car and would highly recommend it.

I really love this car! It's such a huge improvement over my previous Toyota Prius that I drove for six years. Although the mpg is less than the Prius, the FFE is a mid-size vehicle that is solid, hugs the road, and is so QUIET, unlike my Prius. My model came with voice-controlled navigation, heated and cooled front seats, adaptive cruise control, and a driver assistance package. I'm getting over 20 miles per charge, and the hybrid mode is easily giving me 43-46 on the highway. The trunk is a bit small, but that's not an issue for me. I charge the FFE using 110 V, which only costs about $0.85 per day. I was able to save a total of $7,257 off the sticker price by taking advantage of available incentives. I received a $1,500 rebate from the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) and will get a $4,007 tax deduction for 2016. And by the way, the vehicle looks absolutely sharp, both inside and out!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Ford Energi. I purchased it as a model car with around 9,000 miles and have put about 5,000 miles on it since then. While I've had a few issues with the battery and check engine light, my dealer has been really responsive and helpful throughout the process. However, I'm still a bit concerned about the car's reliability and performance, especially since it's only at 14,000 miles now. Do you have any advice on how to address this with the dealer? Thank you!

I've owned 20 cars in the last 15 years, including Lincolns, Jags, Mercedes, BMWs, Minis, Nissans, Volvos, Hondas, Jeeps, Fords, Mercury and VWs. Although I've always loved Ford trucks, I've strayed away from their cars due to their trade-in/resale value and second place quality compared to American built, foreign rivals. However, I recently shopped around and found the FFHE, which offered a $6000 rebate and a $4007 tax rebate, putting me right where I needed to be. I've often thought about hybrids, but never really considered buying one. However, I'm glad I did! This car is very economical whether driven on battery or gas. Although there have been complaints about the lack of distance while driving in the battery mode, it is disclosed that environment, terrain, driving habits and running accessories WILL alter the estimated battery economy. The car is smooth, quiet, comfortable and the interior is reminiscent of a high line vehicle! The interface is a little difficult to navigate at first, but a piece of cake to master once you figure it out. From a drained battery, it takes more like 5 hours to fully charge vs. Ford's estimated 7 hours. The Ford app is nothing short of amazing and addictive and I can't get enough of driving this car! I used to be a Ford Truck kinda guy, but now I'm a Ford Truck and FFHE kinda guy! I think we have finally found a car that we'll stick with and I'm already looking forward to specking out our next one!

Great city car! It's perfect for driving on country roads and I get about 35mpg. After driving it for a month, I plugged mine in and now it's near 50mpg! Other than the small trunk, I have absolutely no complaints. Plus, a full charge only uses 7 kwh of electricity. If you only go short distances, you'll almost never have to put gas in!
