The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common Ford Fusion energi problems

The Ford Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid midsize sedan produced from 2013 to 2020, has faced several common issues that owners have reported. The most significant problem category for the Fusion Energi is electrical issues, with the 2013 model year being the worst due to its high repair costs and problems at lower mileage.

One of the most common issues across various model years is a loss of steering, which appeared frequently in the 2013 model year. This problem can be expensive to fix, with an average cost of $2,200 and an average mileage of 51,000 miles.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi also had issues with the transmission, including harsh or delayed shifting, squeaks and creaks when bumping or turning, swollen lug nuts, and transmission oil leaks. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and affect the overall driving experience.

Another common issue with the Ford Fusion Energi is rodent damage, which is caused by the vehicle's electrical system components being attractive to rodents that chew on the wires. This issue can lead to electrical problems and require costly repairs.

When considering purchasing a used Ford Fusion Energi, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and consider the most reliable model years. The 2013 model year is generally considered the worst due to its high repair costs and frequent problems at lower mileage. It is always a good idea to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or common issues before making a purchase.

What is the problem with the Ford Fusion PHEV?

Don't Charge Ford Fusion Plug-In Hybrids Until a Recall Repair Is Done, the Automaker Says. Ford is recalling nearly 15,000 Fusion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedans from the 2019 and 2020 model years because they may not start, lose power when driving, and be at risk of catching fire.

Latest negative Ford Fusion energi car reviews

  1. Jaylen Botsford 2025-09-27

    Vehicle year: 2017

The Ford Fusion Energi may not meet everyone's needs, but it has some great features that make it a solid choice for those who prioritize fuel efficiency. While the battery range may be lower than advertised, it still offers a respectable 12 miles on a single charge. It's important to note that using certain features like the radio or heater may decrease the range further. As with any vehicle, it's important to do your research and determine if it's the right fit for you. While other automakers may offer more features, the Ford Fusion Energi has its own unique strengths. It's unfortunate that the trade-in value may not be as high as some would hope, but that's a common issue with many vehicles. Overall, the Ford Fusion Energi is a solid choice for those looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle.

  2. Kaleb Wisoky 2025-09-24

    Vehicle year: 2017

The plug-in option is not very practical as it has limited battery capacity and is only useful for short distances. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid has very little trunk space. The car also has some issues with the windshield fogging over and the lane sensing feature can be annoying. However, it is important to note that these are common issues with many vehicles and can be resolved with proper maintenance. While the car may not be suitable for everyone, it is still a reliable and well-made vehicle. As with any car purchase, it is important to do your research and consider all factors before making a decision.

So I have had this car for about 2 years now. I must have a serious Lemon considering all the great reviews. My Fusion has had one electrical failure after another. Over two years the car has sat in service more days than I have been able to drive it. IF the car worked, it could be great. It is very comfortable and has an excellent ride. However there is NO TRUNK for those who actually would use such a thing. The battery pack takes up the full space, so you can fit about a rolled Yoga mat and a few bags of groceries in the trunk, then everything else will be in the back seat space. I really want to love this car, but considering all the major mechanical failures, I can only say I am very lucky I leased and did not buy.

  4. Joshua Lockman 2025-06-12

    Vehicle year: 2013

The car had to be towed back to the dealership twice within a 3-month period due to a completely dead 12v battery. The first time, the dealership fixed it and attributed the issue to a software problem. However, the second time, the car is still at the dealership and jump-starting the battery did not work. Unfortunately, without electricity, accessing the rear trunk and the electronic transmission is impossible, and the doors can only be unlocked using the emergency key. With only a few months left on the lease and 14k miles, another battery issue would be unacceptable. Therefore, if this issue persists, I will have to invoke the Lemon Law in California. It is regrettable that the next person who buys this car may face similar issues.

  1. Gustave Hill 2025-10-21

    Vehicle year: 2016

The instrument control of the Ford vehicle is known to be overly complicated and not intuitive, which can be a bit frustrating. However, the ride is considerably more comfortable than its competitors, making it a great choice for those who prioritize comfort. While the trunk space may not be the best, the value is relative and the out of door price varies. Personally, I got a great deal on my Ford vehicle. Additionally, the Fusion Energi has a 'low profile' lifestyle appearance, which I find appealing. Although the green element is limited due to its 20 miles of electric range, it still has the best range in its segment. Overall, I chose the Ford Fusion Energi because I didn't want to pay the high price of a Tesla or sacrifice ride comfort with a Chevy Volt.

  2. Brice Olson 2025-10-19

    Vehicle year: 2016

I love my 2016 Fusion Energi SE! It's been a great replacement for my old 2005 Hyundai Tucson V6. I opted for the base model with no extra features, and I'm so glad I did because the standard technology package is so robust compared to my old car - which had a tape cassette player (yikes!). Although the window sticker gas mileage changed on the 2016 model year at my time of purchase (108 mpge - 88 mpge), the 88 mpge is still a huge improvement over my old 21 mpg Hyundai. Plus, I consistently get a 30-35 mile pure electric range on this vehicle from a single full charge, which is amazing! The car drives like a dream and is sooo amazingly smooth, even when the gasoline engine kicks on. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of room for drivers with long legs and passengers to sit behind them. The quality of materials in the vehicle are top notch. The user controls and touch screen work well and are responsive, and the voice controlled features are wonderful! I can switch the radio/satellite stations verbally, adjust the temperature verbally, make phone calls, etc. without ever touching a button on the touch screen or control panel. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!Hi there! I'm a proud owner of the electric Energi and I live in Arizona near Phoenix. I did a quick check of my utility rates and found out that it only costs me an average of 42 cents a day to charge my car from empty to full using my utility's electric car rate plan. The best part is that the car charges on the standard supplied charger in less than 6 hours, usually around 5 1/2 hours for a complete charge. Partial charges take even less time, which is super convenient. Initially, I planned to purchase the rapid charger, but I found that the supplied charger is sufficient. The My Ford Mobile app for phones and the web-based version for PCs came activated upon purchase, and new owners receive 5 years of free access. The app provides updated trip data and charge data that is remarkably accurate. You can see the existing range on the batteries, if the car is charging, where mobile charge stations are located nearby, your driver stats/rankings, etc. You can also lock/unlock your vehicle from the app, turn it on/off, and get an exact GPS location on your vehicle at any moment in time. I have not had any equipment malfunctions with the vehicle or the app/web service. The trunk space is adequate for grocery shopping, and you can fit a couple of rows of bags across the width of the trunk with no problem. I have even managed to stuff two mid-size suitcases in there! Overall, I can confidently say that this is the best car I have ever owned. It rides nicer than any BMW, Lexus, Lincoln, or Prius that I have ever ridden in or driven. I still can't believe the value for the money. Additionally, with the $4000 federal tax credit for the electric capability of the vehicle, it is priced almost the same as the hybrid-only version. If you are on the fence about this car or uncertain if you should purchase the electric version or the hybrid-only version, take a chance on the electric Energi. It may exceed your expectations; it certainly exceeded mine. By the way, I've owned this car for 3 years now and still love it!I had some issues with charging my vehicle after the modem replacement, but they were finally resolved. The original modem was no longer being serviced, so Ford asked owners to bring their cars in for installation of a new supported modem. However, after I received the new modem, I faced extensive issues with programming the car's charging intervals using both the app, the website, and the vehicle dash controls. It took Ford almost a full year to solve the problem. Despite the frustration, I must say that Ford was very respectful and professional throughout the process. Although my local dealer was not as professional and accommodating, Ford corporate took over and made sure things were handled and my vehicle was repaired. Shortly thereafter, about 2.5 years into owning the vehicle, my electric charging cord malfunctioned and my vehicle consistently failed to charge overnight. However, a simple warranty swap out of that part solved the issue immediately. I still continue to get electric range capability far in excess of what Ford advertises. It's summer in Arizona so I'm running my AC at all times and I continue to get 28-31 miles of electric range. I absolutely love this car and would highly recommend it.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi SE Luxury. It sounds like you made a great choice in choosing this car over the Tesla Model 3. The Sync3 system seems to be very user-friendly and convenient, especially with its ability to sync with your android phone over Bluetooth. The 3-level heated seats and spacious interior make for a comfortable ride, and the 11-speaker base stereo sounds amazing! It's great to hear that the car has such a long range and is so fuel-efficient. The instrument cluster sounds like a fun and interactive feature, and it's good to know that the car has plenty of headroom. It's a shame that the trunk space is limited, but your suggestion of using soft duffel bags is a great idea. Thank you for your honest review and helpful tips. We hope you continue to enjoy your beautiful Ford Fusion Energi SE Luxury!

I drive a Ford Fusion Energi as my commuter car. My daily drive consists of 16 miles each way in stop-and-go traffic on surface streets and freeways. I live in a hilly area, but going to work, I drive all-electric with brake regen down hills. It's a very quiet ride. Although I don't charge up at work due to the unavailability of a 110-volt outlet outside and a short extension cord, I charge it up nightly in my garage using a 110-volt charger. After a month of driving 865 miles, the dashboard says my average is 90.4 mpge (less if climate on). The Adaptive Cruise Control feature reduces my commuter stress, and the Sony stereo sounds great using Sirius or streaming music via Bluetooth phone using Spotify. I'm really enjoying my new tech car, and my commute costs are much less. Update: It corners really well, and it's fun to drive. It looks good, and I don't have an issue with the trunk size. It's never been an issue for me since I don't carry skis or haul stuff. I have another car for that. After 25000 miles, it's still going really well with no mechanical issues or failures. There were a couple of minor recalls that didn't affect me. I drove the car 2000 miles from Seattle, WA to L.A. in Southern California and back, and there were no issues. It's a solid car. The auto parallel parking feature is awesome, and I'm getting 70 mpg lifetime average. It's a great commuter car, and most of my trips are in the suburbs, 10 miles each way, so most trips use no gasoline. The transition from electric-only to gasoline-hybrid is smooth and seamless. When I need acceleration, I punch it, and the 200 horsepower comes on quickly with lots of torque. I still charge it up every night in my garage (suburb) on 110 volts. I never bought the 220-volt charger because I didn't need it. I sometimes charge at public charging stations, but not very often. I never have range anxiety because it has a 14-gallon gas tank, which I use very little of. I have changed the oil twice in 25000 miles, and it has an intelligent oil monitor. The car has 25000 miles, but the gasoline engine has only 5000 miles, so maintenance costs are really low. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your plug-in hybrid car!
