Common 2005 Saturn Ion problems
The Saturn Ion, produced in 2005, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Check Engine Light and Misfire Due to Ignition Module/Coil Failure: This problem is often indicated by the check engine light and can lead to misfiring of the engine. The ignition module/coil is responsible for igniting the fuel-air mixture in the engine, and its failure can cause significant engine performance issues.
- Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: This issue is often indicated by the check engine light and can be caused by a faulty or improperly tightened gas cap. A loose or damaged gas cap can lead to fuel evaporation and affect the car's performance.
- Power Steering Issues: Apart from power steering failure, some owners have reported issues with the power steering system, causing difficulty in steering the car. This problem can be caused by low power steering fluid levels or a malfunctioning power steering pump.
- Poorly-Made Gas Caps: This issue has been reported by many Saturn Ion owners, causing fuel leaks and affecting the car's performance. A poorly-made gas cap can lead to fuel evaporation and affect the car's fuel efficiency.
- Transmission Problems: This issue has been reported by many Saturn Ion owners, causing difficulty in shifting gears and affecting the car's performance. Transmission problems can be caused by low transmission fluid levels or a malfunctioning transmission system.
- ABS Light and Battery Light Illumination: This issue has been reported by some Saturn Ion owners, indicating a problem with the car's anti-lock braking system (ABS) and battery. This problem can be caused by a malfunctioning ABS system or a low battery level.
- Power Steering Unresponsiveness and Speedometer Stuck: This issue has been reported by some Saturn Ion owners, causing difficulty in steering the car and affecting the car's speed indication. This problem can be caused by a malfunctioning power steering system or a faulty speedometer.
These issues have been reported by Saturn Ion owners and can affect the car's performance and safety. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's longevity and reliability.

- VIN: 1G8AJ52F45Z
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The ignition cylinder was replaced in my vehicle because the key would not turn in the ignition to start the car. It is actually, the fourth time this has happened. I understand that there have been two recalls on this issue in the past. The reason it was recalled is because the ignition has turned to the off position killing the car's engine while the driver is driving on the road which has caused serious accidents. I was lucky not to get into an accident from this. The last replacement has lasted almost ten years. However, my issue is that General Motors apparently keeps manufacturing a defective part. This is unacceptable because I had to pay $585.02 to have this work done due to the fact that the dealerships apparently are not required to replaced it at no charge to the vehicle owner. It could also be a potential safety issue again.

- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: It says I have 0 I repaired recalls. I have had the powers steering fail 2x. More importantly, the ignition cylinder locks up and I can’t get my keys out. I have to wait most times after turning the car off - for 3-5 minutes through a series of clicking noises in the ignition before the key will release. It is concerning because sometimes I have to get out immediately and the keys don’t release. The car automatically locks itself and if I don’t roll the window down- I become locked out. It yesterday had a issue with ignition all together and I wonder if it’s related. I was made aware again there were many recalls on this issue and hoped to get it repaired. However it now states there are none unrepaired. I’m wondering if it is a ongoing problem with the vehicle, it’s repair parts etc and if it’s just not been addressed because it’s so old that so few are left on the road. Thank you. This is a increasing problem and a daily or every time I drive it issue now. I worry too the power steering will just go out in the interstate.

2005 Saturn Ion recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2005 Saturn Ion.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

I bought my Saturn brand new with only 4 miles on it. Since then, I've put 140,000 miles on it and it's been a reliable companion. I've only had to change the oil, get new tires, and replace the battery once. Living in the country, I've taken this little car down dirt roads with no issues. It's even great in ice and snow! It's a shame that Saturn won't be making cars anymore. With 140K miles on it, I think it's time to replace it while I have the finances to do so.

Wow! The re-designed ION3 is just the ticket. I love the ride, handling, and layout of the interior. The car is really quiet! Having traded in a 95 SL2, I was amazed at the noise reduction.

I really love the punch it has when you get on it, and the suicide doors are a great touch. It's much easier to get in and out of than a Cobolt. I was thrilled to see the GM Performance Division logo in the engine compartment, as I come from a Chevy family. The turning is impressive with minimal body roll. Once I wear out the factory Dunlops, I'll need to upgrade the tires. The battery placement in the trunk is also a nice touch for when I add upgraded stereo components. The rear wing is also a great addition, not too big and gaudy like the rest of the imports. I really enjoy going for a drive and not worrying about burning so much gas like my 5.7L Silverado.

Congratulations on your first new vehicle purchase! It's great to hear that you made the best choice with the Saturn ION 3. Your experience at the dealership sounds wonderful, with salespeople who were genuinely interested in your best interest rather than just making a sale. It's also fantastic to hear that you did your research and are satisfied with the performance of the ION. It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it! It's great to hear that you have had no complaints about the car or the dealership in the month that you've had it. The ION is a reliable car for the price, so you made a great investment. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

My ION has been trouble free after 6000 miles and rides great. It's very quiet at idle and cruising, and handles very well. The seats are quite comfortable. I'm really enjoying the 160 watt stereo with XM radio, it's definitely worth every penny. I waited for the 2005 model because I had heard about all the technical improvements being made, and I'm glad I did. The effort Saturn's engineers put into making this car quiet is very apparent. I would definitely buy this car again.

I bought my Saturn ION Level 2 a little over a year ago, and unfortunately, I experienced a lot of issues with it. The engine was bucking, there were clicking noises when driving, and the road noise was quite noticeable. Additionally, the cd/radio wasn't up to my expectations, and the doors had trouble shutting after being opened. I even had a problem with the hood latch. It was quite frustrating. However, I appreciate the fact that the engine was well-made. While I may not purchase another Saturn in the future, I hope that the company can improve their quality control in the future.

I bought my 2005 Saturn in mid-2005 after owning a 1996 model for almost a decade, which I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, my experience with this 2005 ION has been quite different. I have had some scary moments while driving this car, including almost getting into accidents three times, one of which was on I-95. The car tends to stop dead after a mile or so, leaving me without power or brakes. It takes around 10 to 20 minutes to get it started again, and even then, there is no guarantee that it won't stall again. It seems that the computer in the car is defective, but it takes several attempts to diagnose the issue. If only they had identified the problem back in 2006, I could have returned the car to the manufacturer under Florida's lemon law. I would advise against buying this car!

Your 2005 ION Red Line is an absolute blast to drive! The styling presents subtle hints to the beast that lurks under the skin. Although the shift from 1st to 2nd is somewhat clunky and happens almost immediately if you are trying to go fast, the pressure cooker really smokes in 2nd, as you rocket to 60 mph. While the interior may be the most disappointing feature, it still has its charms. There are some squeaks and rattles, but they don't detract from the overall experience. Unlike the 06 Honda Si, which only has around 140 ft-lb of torque, this little mill feels like a V-8 from 800 rpm up due to its impressive 200 ft-lb of torque. The rush comes on early and continues right to the Red Line!

I purchased my Ion in 2005. While the car has good performance, it only seems to perform well when it wants to. Unfortunately, after owning the car for 13 months, I began to experience issues with getting my keys out of the ignition, which would drain my battery. I took it to Saturn, but they said there was no problem. I accepted their response and kept the car. However, I later found out that this is a common problem and I had to replace the expensive battery multiple times. To make matters worse, my car stalls on me and won't restart for about 15-20 minutes, during which time it drains my battery. I am extremely disappointed with this car. Prior to this, I drove a 2000 Saturn Coupe and loved it! Unfortunately, my opinion of Saturn has changed for the worse due to this car.

Although my 2005 Saturn Ion3 has had some issues, I have learned a lot from owning it. I currently owe $7000.00 on the car and its engine needs some work, along with the rear main seal. I have had some trouble with the sunroof, drivers window, and ignition, and the gas mileage could be better. However, I have found that with proper maintenance and care, this car can still be a reliable mode of transportation. While my experience with GM customer service has not been ideal, I believe that this car has its merits and can be a good choice for some drivers. Sincerely, Monica-
