lincoln logo

The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size, three-row luxury SUV manufactured and marketed under the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company — and now in its second generation, with a hiatus from 2006 to 2020.

The first generation Aviator was manufactured for 2003–2005 model years as a rebadged variant of the third generation Ford Explorer — and assembled at the now-closed St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood, Missouri, alongside the Explorer and Mountaineer.

For the 2020 model year, Lincoln reintroduced the Aviator as a badge engineered variant of the sixth generation Ford Explorer manufactured at Chicago Assembly and offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

THE COST OF REPAIR IS AROUND $1200.00 DOLLARS. UNBELIEVABLE. ONE MAN SAID HE HAS REPLACED THIS PART 3 TIMES. THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH FORD IN GENERAL. MY CAR HAS 80,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN KEPT IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. NOW THIS, ALONG WITH THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW MOTOR GOING OUT AS WELL. ANOTHER $4000-$600 DOLLAR FIX. QUITE UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS. POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-15
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: ON MY 2003 AVIATOR THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE DAY AND NIGHT. MY INTERIOR LIGHTS FLASH AND MY CAR ALARM GOES OFF. IT'S BEEN DOING THIS FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS, BUT HAS GOTTEN WORSE THIS YEAR 2016. MY BATTERY HAS DIED TWICE IN TWO DAYS. SO FRUSTRATED WITH THIS VEHICLE. WAS SUMMONED OVER THE INTERCOM IN A DEPARTMENT STORE AND AT WORK SAYING THAT A LINCOLN SUV'S ALARM WAS GOING OFF AND THAT THE LIGHTS WERE FLASHING. I KNEW IT WAS MINE. I HIT THE ALARM BUTTON ON THE KEY FOB WHICH CUT OFF THE ALARM FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND IT STARTED UP AGAIN. WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT, THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON WHICH MAKES MY INTERIOR LIGHTS FLASH QUICKLY AND MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE BECAUSE OF THE GLARE OF THE INTERIOR LIGHTS BEING ON. THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON ANYTIME DAY OR NIGHT, STATIONARY OR WHILE DRIVING. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW. IT ONLY HAS 67,000 MILES ON IT NOW, BUT OVER THE YEARS, I'VE HAD SERIOUS ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION, HAD TO REPLACE 2 WHEEL BEARINGS, THERE'S A CRACK NEAR THE EMBLEM ON THE LIFTGATE, THE STEREO MAKES LOUD POPPING SOUNDS IN THE BACK WHICH SOUNDS LIKE A GUNSHOT, SOMETIMES CAN'T GET OUT OF PARK, THE GEAR SHIFT GETS STUCK! I'M SO FRUSTRATED WITH THIS VEHICLE. I COMPLAINED TO THE FORD COMPANY SEVERAL YEARS AGO WHEN THERE WERE ONLY 40,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS HAVING SERIOUS ISSUES, AND ALSO MY WATER PUMP WENT BAD. THEIR REPLY WAS: "WE'RE SORRY TO HEAR THAT, PLEASE TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO ONE OF OUR DEALERS FOR GREAT SERVICE REPAIR". I THINK I BOUGHT A LEMON!! TOO MANY THINGS GOING WRONG WITH A VEHICLE THAT WAS PURCHASED NEW AND STILL HAVE LOW MILES!! MY WINDSHIELD SPRAYER CONTROL ON THE LEFT SIDE ON THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO STOPPED WORKING SUDDENLY ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO, I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THAT ISSUE.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • VIN: 5LMEU68H63Z
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY INTO THE STREET. ONCE I WAS IN THE STREET, I PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE AND STEPPED ON THE GAS. THE CAR WENT THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION- REVERSE. I DOUBLE CHECKED THE GEAR SHIFT ( IN THE CENTER OF THE VEHICLE), IT WAS "D" FOR DRIVE. I MADE SURE IT WAS IN THE D, AND STEPPED SLOWLY ON THE GAS, AND IT WENT INTO REVERSE. I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THEY DIDN'T ENGAGE. I QUICKLY STEPPED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND THAT STOPPED THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN A CUL-DE-SAC WITH OUT OTHER PEDESTRIANS OR VEHICLES AT THE TIME. IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HAVE A CAR WHERE THE SHIFT ISN'T ENGAGED AT ALL. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN ALWAYS MAINTAINED BY THE LINCOLN DEALER, AND IT IS BEING TOWED TO THAT DEALERSHIP AT THIS TIME. IT'S TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. *TR

Negative 2003 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

  1. Torey Yost 2024-10-08

Hi there! It's great to hear that you bought this SUV with only 24,000 miles and that it has been pretty good so far. Although, you mentioned a few issues such as the seat climate controls failing, a loose driver's seat, and some corrosion on the top inside edge of the rear liftgate. You also mentioned that the brake rotors seem like they need replacement and some knobs and controls don't feel smooth when operated. However, overall, it's a well-built SUV with a lot of nice features. We were most impressed with the innovations, like thicker windows, that reduce noise. It has many features that make it a much improved version of the Explorer, which is what we owned previously. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Nils Hettinger 2024-01-22

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that we had to replace the power steering pump, which cost $800.00. Additionally, they had to replace something else, but my husband mentioned that it snapped while he was pulling his friend out of a snow drift.

Positive 2003 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

  1. Tevin Kerluke 2024-11-22

After a couple of maiden voyage adjustments, this car has been performing at 100%. I have been receiving compliments from both my generation (the 50+ club) and the younger crowd.

  2. Osbaldo Conn 2024-11-10

I'm so glad I chose the Aviator to replace my beloved Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's the perfect combination of power (300 HP) and comfort, with excellent handling in deep snow. What's more, it's much more affordable than the Toyota Land Cruiser or BMW X5 (which only seats 5), and it outperforms them both. I'm a bit puzzled as to why Ford replaced it with the minivan-like MKX, but I'm still thrilled with my Aviator. I highly recommend it!

  3. Granville Howe 2024-11-09

The Aviator is the best handling American vehicle I have ever driven. With 302 horses under the hood, it certainly packs a punch. Despite its power, it's surprisingly quiet compared to other SUVs. Once you get behind the wheel, you'll be hooked!

  4. Arno Keeling 2024-11-07

Out of all the midsize luxury SUVs I've seen or driven, this one is incomparable. It has a unique interior design with great furnishings, drives like a dream, has lots of power, and looks great. It also turns heads. Some people think the Navigator shrank until they see the name. It's all you get in a Navigator, just a smaller, more agile package.

  5. Ronny Koelpin 2024-10-29

    It's so nice.
