Common Ford Flex problems

The Ford Flex, a popular full-size crossover car, has been manufactured from 2008 to 2019. While generally reliable, the Ford Flex has had its share of common problems. Electrical issues are one of the most prevalent problems, particularly in the 2013 and 2014 models. These issues can range from minor inconveniences, such as a door light staying on when the car is shut, to major problems like loss of power while driving or a car that won't start. Electrical problems can be unpredictable and costly to repair, making the 2013 and 2014 Ford Flex years to avoid if you want to minimize the risk of these issues.

Engine troubles are another common problem in the Ford Flex, particularly in the 2010 model. Engine failure, blown engines, and check engine lights are some of the issues that have been reported. These problems can be expensive to repair and can cause significant inconvenience for drivers. If you're looking for a used Ford Flex, it's best to avoid the 2010 model if you want to minimize the risk of engine troubles.

Interior and exterior accessory issues are also common in the Ford Flex. These issues can range from air conditioning and heater troubles to stuck seat latches. While not as serious as electrical or engine problems, they can still cause inconvenience for drivers and may require costly repairs.

In addition to these common problems, there have been specific recalls related to the Ford Flex. For example, certain 2018 Ford Flexes were recalled due to loose connections between the power supply, alternator, and regulator, which can increase the risk of fires. Ford dealers were instructed to inspect these parts and verify that they're connected, with any repairs done free of charge. Suspension problems have also prompted Ford to recall certain Ford Flexes from 2013 to 2018, with the rear toe links potentially fracturing due to excessive movement in the suspension and causing the vehicle to crash. The American carmaker has offered to replace both left and right toe links on affected vehicles for free.

To avoid unexpected maintenance and repair costs, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the most common problems of the Ford Flex before purchasing a used one. The 2010 model is considered the worst in the lineup due to its problems occurring at lower mileage. The 2013 and 2014 models are also worth avoiding due to their electrical issues, while the 2010 model should be avoided if you want to minimize the risk of engine troubles. By being aware of these common problems, you can make an informed decision and choose a Ford Flex model that is less prone to issues.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 2FMHK6C85KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Rear park aid camera failure. The camera does not always display when reverse is selected. The camera only shows an upside down image when it displays. The camera displays severe vertical lines when dark, virtually making the display useless. This is a safety issue because I cannot see persons or objects behind me if the camera is inoperable. If the camera is operable, with the display upside down, it is disorienting to use as a means of protecting persons or objects behind me as well as protecting my vehicle from damage. I have not taken it to the dealer for this issue, as it began after the warranty period expired. The problem has not been inspected by a dealer, independent service center, the manufacturer, police or insurance representatives. The vehicle has not been recalled for this issue. I find this surprising, given the large number of Ford vehicles which have been recalled for rear camera problems. I also find this to be a somewhat common problem with the Ford Flex across multiple model years, based on viewing of various chat boards found on the internet.

Latest negative Ford Flex car reviews

  1. Merl Balistreri 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2019

I bought a used 2019 Ford Flex SEL in July 2020 and I absolutely love it! It has a smooth ride, stylish appearance, and plenty of features. However, after a few weeks of ownership, I experienced an issue with all of the warning lights coming on and a code P2610 being logged. Despite taking it to the dealer twice, they were unable to replicate the issue and simply cleared the code. At one point, I even had trouble starting the car. The dealer explained that they need to duplicate the issue while connected to their diagnostic machine. Unfortunately, in just two months, the service engine light has come on three times, causing concern about driving the car too far without risking a tow. Although the alerts were alarming, I never lost control of the car. The warnings included Steering Assist Fail, Low Oil Pressure, High Coolant Temperature, ABS Failure, Traction Control Failure, and Navigation System Failure. While it seems that no one else has experienced this issue, it is a real concern for me. Despite there being no recalls on my VIN, I am hopeful that the dealer can resolve this issue soon so that I can fully enjoy my car without any worries.

  2. Jerel Toy 2025-02-01

    Vehicle year: 2013

Over the last 20 years, I have owned a variety of personal and business vehicles, all of which were bought used and had hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Despite this, I have always been confident in my choices and have never regretted my purchases. However, after experiencing some electronic issues with my most recent vehicle, I decided it was time to move on. I was looking for an AWD 7 passenger vehicle with cargo space, and after careful consideration, I chose the Flex. It outperformed all of its competitors and drove like a quality European wagon. Although I did experience some minor issues, such as the rear door sensor and the stereo/audio system, these were quickly resolved. Overall, I am confident in my decision to purchase the Flex and would recommend it to others in the market for a similar vehicle. My wife's car radio was stuck on and the local dealer said it would take at least two hours of labor to diagnose and replace the entire infotainment unit. However, I knew that wasn't necessary and called a nearby car audio shop instead. They quickly fixed the issue by lifting the battery terminal and reconnecting it after a few minutes. The technician even gave my wife a wrench and showed her what to do in case it happened again. While modern cars come with their fair share of complicated technology, I still prefer my reliable '98 E36 M3 and '00 528iT wagon. In fact, our '12 Prius V and Sienna have needed minimal repairs beyond regular maintenance. While I'm a German car enthusiast, I have to admit that Honda and Toyota have earned their reputation for reliability. Despite the challenges of advancing automotive technology, I'm confident that with proper care and maintenance, we can continue to enjoy our vehicles for years to come.Buy low mileage garage queen vehicles from the 90's and early 2000s. Install a Bluetooth radio device and enjoy the ride with confidence!

  3. Terence Schmeler 2025-01-19

    Vehicle year: 2013

I recently traded in my 2013 Flex, which I had bought brand new in 2014. Although I was sad to let it go, I knew it was time for a change due to a few issues. One of the main problems was the climate control system. Even with a warm engine, in temperatures of 40 degrees and below, it would intermittently blow out ice-cold air, especially when idling. Despite taking it to the dealer on five separate occasions, the issue was never resolved. The first three times, they told me that there was nothing wrong because they were able to turn it up to 'HI' and get warm air. The fourth time, they blamed it on a low coolant level and added antifreeze. The fifth time, they said there was a coolant leak and charged me to replace the hose, but it still blew out cold air when I needed it to be warm. Another issue was with the door latch on the driver's side front door. The Flex thought the door was open even when it was closed, which resulted in annoying 'door ajar' warning lights and interior lights that wouldn't turn off. When I started having trouble with the Flex, I reluctantly purchased the extended warranty that I had refused at delivery. Sadly, it paid for itself quickly. The door latch alone would have cost me more than $400.00 to replace otherwise, but even with the warranty, I had to fight with Ford to have them cover it. There was also the matter of the mysterious split battery, which resulted in wiring harness replacement. The latch on the seldom-used compartment between the front seats broke within a year, and I would have preferred to have the extra seating capacity instead of the refrigerator/freezer between the second-row seats, but I knew that was there when I bought it. The gas mileage was not great despite my efforts to drive conservatively, and it ate tires like a champion. By spring, it would have been on its fourth set, and those wide 20' tires are not cheap! Despite all of this, I will miss it for more than one reason. First and foremost, the performance! Several sports car drivers were surprised when they attempted to cut me off in traffic, but the Flex's impressive performance made it difficult to beat on straight roads. Despite its boxy appearance, the Flex was a comfortable and enjoyable road car. The stereo system was fantastic, and it easily accommodated all five of my grandchildren without leaving my husband behind. While the self-parking option was a bit creepy, it was much better at parallel parking than I was. The headlights were also incredibly bright, prompting oncoming drivers to flash their lights at me to dim them. The Flex was always up to the challenge of our harsh NW PA winters, setting records for snowfall. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to replace it with another Flex, as the Limited model with AWD and EcoBoost costs almost $50K, which is beyond my budget as I prepare for retirement.

  4. Kaley Heidenreich 2025-01-16

    Vehicle year: 2009

The design and concept of this car is great. Unfortunately, I had to sell it due to safety concerns. The car's stability control engages for no apparent reason and brings the car to a sudden halt. It's concerning that no one seems willing to address the issue. I would advise caution when considering a family car that may be unpredictable.

  5. Orval Rohan 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2016

Although the car has not given us any mechanical problems, we have found it uncomfortable to drive on long trips due to leg and neck cramps. The touch screen can be distracting and the visibility is poor. Additionally, the electronic turn signal is not to our liking. We have also experienced issues with the low front bumper hitting curbs and cracking, which can be expensive to repair. Despite these challenges, we have owned the car for over seven years and have driven 120,000 miles. While we are ready to move on to a new vehicle, we appreciate the reliability it has provided us. Despite experiencing multiple issues with our car, we have been able to handle them with confidence. We recently had to replace a second wheel bearing and had an issue with the bolts holding the rear end, but we were able to address these problems effectively. Although we still owe 13 months of financing at $471.00 per month, we have been able to manage the average repair cost of $850 per year over the past five years. We are confident in our ability to continue maintaining this car until we are able to afford a new one.

I just leased a brand new Flex. As a new mom with a 7 month old, my husband and I are extremely happy with the comfort of this car. It fits in our garage and accommodates the car seat with room to spare in the driver seat. Our experience with our dealership and the sales team at Airport Marina Ford in Los Angeles, CA was amazing. I highly recommend this car for new families.

I recently rented an almost-new Flex for three weeks while my car was in the shop. Although it may not win a beauty contest, and it's not exactly macho, I have no complaints about it. The car handles better than a big SUV, has plenty of power in town and on the road, and is really easy to enter and exit. The third row is easily accessed and the two adult passengers back there had no complaints during a 30-minute trip. Although the seats are a little flat, they are comfortable and heat up quickly. Living in a town of Mercedes, BMWs, Lexuses and Porsches, it was fun asking the valets to retrieve the black Flex. This moderately-priced all-around workhorse of a car will handle the snow and rain as well as most of the more expensive, less comfortable, clunkier trucks and crossovers. And as far as looks go, you don't notice them when you're inside.

We bought a Flex in 2012 to meet our travel, towing, and moving needs. The car performed admirably. Unfortunately, we recently had a severe accident at highway speeds which totaled our car. However, we were impressed with how well the airbags deployed and how the interior remained untouched. The engineering is excellent, and we are looking forward to replacing the car with another Flex!

I've owned several vehicles in the past, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Honda. I've always dreamed of owning a Ford Flex because of its size. When I first learned to drive at 18, I took my driver's test in a 1975 Chevy Impala Wagon and passed with flying colours. I feel safe in larger vehicles, and my 2016 Ford Flex Limited has been a great ride so far with no issues. When I purchased the vehicle, it had close to 18,000 miles on it, so I checked the VIN# for any recalls. It had one for the throttle issue, but I was able to take it to a Ford dealership for repair under the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, even though I bought it from a Chrysler dealership in the same city. The repair only took about 1.5 hours. The Ford dealership informed me that they are responsible for fixing any issues with used vehicles under warranty, regardless of where it was purchased. If you have an extended warranty, the dealership where you purchased it is responsible for repairs after the original warranty expires. I drove my Ford Flex to Virginia with my husband, two dogs, and luggage, and it performed perfectly after the throttle recall repair. I made sure all recalls were fixed before our trip. When you buy a vehicle, whether it's new or used, it's important to check the VIN# for recalls after you have bought it so that it doesn't have any problems in the long run. In my case, I bought a 2016 Ford Flex Limited in Magnetic color and I am still loving it. Days after I bought it, I went back to the dealership where I bought it and they assured me that Ford would take care of the recalls and issues within the first 3 years/36,000 miles original warranty. After that, since I bought the extended warranty from a Chrysler dealership, they would then take over with repairs and issues with the vehicle. To ensure my vehicle was sound and without issues during my long haul across the United States, I had the Ford dealership put
