The Ford Flex, a popular full-size crossover car from the Ford brand, has faced a number of common problems throughout its production years. These issues have been reported by owners and have led to complaints, some of which have resulted in recalls. Here are some of the most common problems with the Ford Flex, based on the search results:
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems have been a significant issue for the Ford Flex, particularly in the 2013 and 2014 models. These problems can range from minor inconveniences to major, costly repairs. Some specific electrical issues reported include the door light staying on when the car is shut, loss of power while driving, and the car not starting. These issues can be unpredictable and inconvenient, making them a major concern for drivers.
- Engine Troubles: Engine troubles have also been a common problem for the Ford Flex, particularly in the 2010 model. Some of the engine troubles reported include blown engines, engine failure, and the check engine light coming on. These issues can be costly and inconvenient, and can significantly impact the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

- Fuel Delivery Module Crack: A crack in the fuel delivery module has been reported for the 2013 Ford Flex, leading to fuel leaks and a fire hazard. Ford worked with dealers to resolve the issue, and it is important to have the vehicle inspected if you own a 2013 model.
- Airbag Deployment Failure: Between the model years 2009 and 2011, the airbags in Flex cars would not inflate after being deployed. Ford announced an active recall to solve this problem and will work with distributors and dealerships to change the airbags as needed.
These are just a few of the common problems reported for the Ford Flex. If you are considering purchasing a used Ford Flex, it is important to review its maintenance records and have it inspected by a professional. Paying particular attention to the model year and any known issues can help you make an informed decision and avoid costly repairs down the line.

- Summary: The door ajar sensor malfunctions and is crazy expensive to fix. There are numerous posts and videos online of workarounds bcz it’s so common but they don’t seem safe since that’s a safety feature and the workarounds are simply a way to trick or bypass the warning sensors since the doors are actually closed in most cases. Ford needs to take ownership of this and issue a recall. There’s a tire pressure sensor failure as well.

We got vehicle to Firestone and they said our left rear toe link had broke. Supposedly our vehicle year is not part of the recall, I think it should be. Thank you

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-15
- VIN: 2FMDK51C09B
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My Flex has repeatedly lost power while driving. I can feel the car lose power, and the yellow wrench light comes on. After reading up on it, I learned that you have to turn the vehicle off, wherever you are, and restart it after a few minutes. The wrench light turns off, and the car runs as normal, with no records of codes. This is talked about over and over in online forums. The safety issue is that it has happened on the freeway several times while traveling at a high rate of speed. The car loses power, and you cannot accelerate. You have to find a way to stop immediately, put the car in park (and listen to the transmission clunk) and turn it off. This last instance put me in harms way on the freeway. The car lost power while traveling 70mph. I immediately lost speed and had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pull over to turn the car off. All of the forums talk about the throttle body, but everyone says that’s not the issue. The OSS and TSS sensors are also discussed. The dealerships cannot find out what’s wrong because once the car is turned off and restarted, any codes are erased. The issue persists, and the car keeps losing power wherever and whenever. I am referencing the most recent incident on this form, however, this has happened at least 12 times since September, 2020. Please, please force a recall on this issue!
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-23
- VIN: 2FMDK52C39B
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: LAST NIGHT, I WENT TO BACK THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE AND WHILE IN REVERSE, THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING UP UNCONTROLLABLY AND EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES, IT KEPT MOVING IN REVERSE. I QUICKLY PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND THE REVVING CAME DOWN. SHUT DOWN THE CAR, RESTARTED IT AND THIS TIME, I PUT IT IN DRIVE AND THE SAME THING HAPPEN AGAIN ONLY TO START LUNGING FORWARD EVEN WHILE BRAKING. IF I WERE IN TRAFFIC OR AT A STOP LIGHT OR SIGN, I WOULD HAVE SURELY HIT THE PERSON(S) IN FRONT OR BEHIND ME. LATER MY WIFE EXPLAINED TO ME THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND SHE HAD A HARD TIME CONTROLLING THE SPEED, DUE TO REVVING, EVEN WHILE USING THE BRAKE. SHE MANAGED TO TAKE AN EXIT RAMP INTO A LARGE PARKING LOT USING EXTREME BRAKING (FORCEFUL) AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. SHE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME SHORTLY THEREAFTER. I WAITED UNTIL AFTER 8PM TO DRIVE WHEN THERE WAS LITTLE OR NO TRAFFIC TO DRIVE TO THE CLOSEST CAR REPAIR SHOP TO DROP IT OFF AND THERE HAPPENED TO BE A MECHANIC LEAVING AS I WAS PULLING UP. I DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AND HE MENTIONED THAT IT WAS A DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE IT UNTIL IT GOT DIAGNOSED & REPAIRED. I'VE OWNED A LOT OF CARS IN MY LIFE AND EXPERIENCING UNCONTROLLABLE REVVING WHILST THE TRANSMISSION IS ENGAGED IS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. LUCKILY WE KEPT OUR WITS AND WERE ABLE TO RECOVER. I ALSO SEE WHERE THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN REPORTED ON THIS SITE. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE AND I'M THANKFUL NO ONE WAS INJURED LAST NIGHT, INCLUDING MY WIFE AND CHILDREN. PLEASE, PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS AS THIS IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR AND A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN.

We are thrilled with our new Flex! The exterior is bold and eye-catching, making it stand out from other crossovers. The interior is the best that Ford has ever produced, with plenty of room in all seats, including the third row, even for someone as tall as me (6'2''). The car has six passenger seating and plenty of cupholders, and we love the great options like auto-folding second row seats and ambient lighting. The exterior colors are also fantastic. While some may not be fans of the exterior design, we believe that the interior more than makes up for it. We highly recommend giving this car serious consideration when shopping for your next vehicle.

I bought this car used from our local dealership with 24,701 miles on it. Unfortunately, on the second day of ownership, I experienced a terrible squealing sound when I came out of my driveway. At first, I thought I had run over a branch, but the car continued to squeal intermittently throughout my journey. I suspected it was my brakes, but the service team assured me that they were perfectly fine. However, the squealing persisted, and I noticed a burning smell. I took it back to the service team, and they discovered that the left rear caliper was locking up and replaced it. I brought it back home and parked it in the garage, but I still smelled the burning odor, and the wheel was too hot to touch. The service team has it again, and I am hoping for a resolution soon.

It's great to see that Ford's focus on quality has paid off! As someone with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, as well as certifications in Aircraft and ASE Mechanics, I used to be a GM guy for the first 25 years of my driving life. However, after a bad lemon experience with a GM truck, the GM service manager actually recommended that I try the 'Blue Oval' if I wanted a real truck. I took their advice and switched to Ford in 2000, and I've never looked back. Recently, my wife and I were looking for a replacement for her 92 Astro Van, and I stopped by the dealership. I was blown away by the Flex and thought she would never go for it, but I was wrong! We bought one and we both really like it!

I am thoroughly impressed with every aspect of my red Ford Flex SEL. The quality is exceptional and the vehicle is incredibly spacious. Although I find the front seat headrests to be slightly uncomfortable and the second row captain chairs could benefit from armrests, these minor issues do not detract from the overall excellence of the car. The sync radio with Bluetooth hands-free cell phone features is a fantastic addition. The car has garnered a lot of attention and turned many heads while being driven. It's hard to believe that this roomy vehicle has almost identical dimensions to my 2005 Ford Freestyle. I have been achieving over 20 miles per gallon in mixed driving conditions, which is impressive.

I have experienced severe problems with the transmission and brakes of this car, which have made me feel very unsafe while driving. Despite the dealer's reassurances that nothing is wrong, I have had to pull over on the freeway and restart the vehicle to get it back into drive. The brakes continually grind and emit smoke and a burning smell. As a result, I am disappointed with this car and would like to explore options for returning it and getting my money back.

I recently purchased the Managers Special with 4500 miles on it. Unfortunately, within 2 weeks of owning it, the engine light came on. Despite having to go back to the dealership 4 times, they are still working on resolving the issue. They have already replaced the right caliper/brakes and are currently investigating a knocking sound in the engine that occurs between 3rd and 4th gear. Although they have not provided a clear explanation for the issues, they have been blaming it on modules and sensors. Additionally, the driver's seat has been making noises, but the dealership is working on resolving this issue by ordering the necessary parts. I appreciate their efforts, but it looks like I will have to bring the car back again. It's worth noting that the car was in for service at 2300 miles when the Manager had it (at least 2-3 times)!

After a year of owning my Flex, I've noticed some issues with the quality that I didn't expect. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some severe grinding with my front brakes, which seems to be a common issue with this vehicle. Additionally, I've had some plastic interior trim pieces fall off and the exterior plastic pillar piece is coming off, which is only attached with double-sided tape. On top of that, I've noticed that my gas mileage rarely gets above 21 mpg on the highway, despite the advertised 24 mpg. It's important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase.
Cordell McCullough 2024-06-06
The brake grinding noise in my car has been a persistent issue, and despite consulting with Ford and Kelly Ford dealership in Melbourne, Florida, no solution has been found. It is worth noting that this problem is more likely to occur in areas with high humidity, water or salt in the air. I am currently pursuing the lemon law process and would advise against purchasing this car. In addition to the noise, the stopping distance has been affected. Furthermore, during my inspection of the car, I noticed that the metal bends easily when pressure is applied, indicating poor quality manufacturing.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our Ford vehicle. My wife and I test drove several cars before deciding on our first and last Ford. At first, it seemed like the perfect fit for our needs. We purchased it brand new in November 2008. Unfortunately, we did experience some issues within the first six months, including having to replace the 'sync' system's wiring harness four times and the touch screen once. Additionally, we had to replace the front rotors and brakes within 16,000 miles (2 years). Recently, we've had to replace the front rotors again, as well as the rear brakes and rotors, after just 11 months and 10,000 miles. Unfortunately, Ford Corporate was not able to assist us with this non-warranty item, citing it as 'normal/routine maintenance'. We've also noticed some screeching sounds coming from the brakes, which we've been told is also 'normal'. Despite these issues, we still enjoy our Ford and hope to continue driving it for years to come. Thanks for listening!
