2021 Alfa romeo Giulia problems

Alfa Romeo Giulia (Italian pronunciation: ) is the name of three not directly related models by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo. The first is a line of sporty four-door compact executive cars (Type 105) produced from 1962 to 1978, the second is an updated, mainly up-engined Spider, Sprint and Sprint Speciale Giuliettas, and the third Giulia is a compact executive car (type 952) unveiled in 2015.

Alfa Romeo was one of the first mainstream manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a light-weight 1 tonne (2,205 lb) four-door car for mass production. The Type 105 Giulia was equipped with a light alloy twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine similar to that of the earlier Giulietta (750/101) range, available in 1.3-litre (1,290 cc) and 1.6-litre (1,570 cc) versions. Various configurations of carburetors and tuning produced power outputs from about 80 to about 110 bhp (55 to 75 kW), coupled in most cases to 5-speed manual transmission.

Giulia sedans were noted for lively handling and impressive acceleration among small European four-door sedans of their era, especially considering modest engine sizes offered. The popular Super version with the twin carburettor 1.6 litre engine had a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph) and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 12 seconds, better than many sports cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. When leaving the factory all variations of the Giulia originally fitted either Pirelli Cinturato 165HR14 or 155HR15 tyres (CA67).

The styling of the boxy four-door notchback saloon was somewhat wanting. The engine bay, cabin and boot were all square shaped, buffered somewhat by details on the grill, roofline, bonnet and boot. Use of a wind tunnel during development led to a very aerodynamic shape that produced a drag coefficient of Cd=0.34, particularly low for a saloon of the era.

The Giulia Spider was succeeded by the Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115) in 1966.

Common 2021 Alfa romeo Giulia problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2021, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Misfiring:
    • Some models experienced engine misfiring issues, particularly affecting the 2.0-liter turbocharged models. This issue could lead to catalytic converter overheating, damage to engine wiring, and potential electrical faults, with worst-case scenarios including engine fires and failing exhaust systems.
  • Brake Faults:
    • Two brake-related problems were reported. Firstly, a failure of the anti-lock braking system in 2020 and 2021 models, which could lead to reduced braking power and loss of anti-lock braking. Secondly, rear brake discs in 2020 models were prone to breaking apart, causing a sudden and complete loss of braking power.
  • Fuel Leaks:
    • Fuel leaks were reported in 2020 and 2021 models due to a crack in the fuel line sensor housing. This issue could lead to fuel leaking from the fuel lines, increasing the risk of fire. Alfa Romeo offered free fixes for affected Giulia models.
  • Other Common Issues:
    • Additional problems included contaminated and leaking brake fluid, faulty brake module software preventing the disabling of adaptive cruise control, and fuel gauge issues resulting in higher readings. These issues have caused inconvenience and safety concerns for owners of the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2017-2019 models.

These common problems with the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2021 have contributed to its reputation for poor reliability, highlighting the importance of thorough maintenance and awareness of potential issues for owners of this luxury sedan.

What is the problem with the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia?

Fuel Leaks and Fire Risk

In the case of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, certain 2020 and 2021 models experienced this problem due to a crack in the fuel line sensor housing. The crack allowed fuel to leak from the fuel lines, significantly increasing the risk of fire.

What is the recall on the 2021 Giulia?

Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and 2020-2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles. Hard braking may cause the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) rotor shaft to separate, a reduction of braking assist, and a loss of ABS.

How reliable is the Alfa Romeo Giulia?

A worrying 28% of owners reported at least one fault within the first 12 months of ownership, mostly related to the electrics. The fact the Giulia was still rated so highly should mean most of these faults were not too serious. Similarly to the brand itself, the Giulia didn't feature in our lists in 2022.

What kind of engine is in the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia?

The base trim is powered by a 280-horsepower 4-cylinder engine that delivers 306 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 RPM. When upgrading to premium trims, such as the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, you gain even more power with a 505-horsepower 2.9L TwinTurbo V6.

Positive 2021 Alfa romeo Giulia car reviews

  1. Charles Kilback 2024-11-29

This car is a true gem! Like most Italian cars, it gets more enjoyable over time. Long-term ownership reviews agree that it eventually feels like it's a part of you. The Alfa mystique is still there, making it a fairly exclusive car due to its poor sales. However, this also means that they are a steal right now! I was lucky enough to pick up my Lusso for only 32K with less than 22K miles on it, even though it was over 60K when new. The drive is absolutely fabulous, and I'm glad I opted for RWD instead of AWD. I had a loaner with AWD and didn't find the experience of having less autonomy an advantage. The 2-liter engine has a big turbo, and it feels sublime on twisty roads in D mode, as this mode keeps you in boost. I was finding the usual Audis and BMWs lacking in excitement, but this car offers that in many unexpected ways. Don't believe the rumors about unreliability! Many Audi and BMW models have worse ratings, but it's popular for the general public to assume that Alfas are unreliable. If you research actual ownership, you will see that this is relatively untrue. The only issues I have had are warnings coming up saying that something is currently unavailable, even though they are working fine. Audio, for example. But the HK system and everything else works great, and the stereo sound is amazing! I typically drive 80-85 mph, and the car still delivers 32 mpg, which is pretty good. I've even achieved 37 mpg once, in heavy, steady 55 mph traffic. My Russo Lusso is a car that I'm looking forward to owning for a long time!

  2. Cory Will 2024-10-06

Hey there! I'm the proud owner of a 2020 Giulia Ti Sport with interior carbon fiber trim. Let me tell you, this entry level sports sedan really stands out! It's a true driver's car, with low seats and gauges that are perfectly geared for your convenience. The steering wheel is nice and fat, with a flat bottom wheel that feels great in your hands. The Italian flare and panache is evident in every line of this car, especially the front end. The only downside is that the trunk isn't quite big enough for my golf bag, but folding down one of the rear seats gives you plenty of room. This car is even quicker than the BMW 330 and 335, and its look is distinctly Italian. It's definitely a niche car, which means you'll enjoy a modicum of exclusivity. Trust me, you'll love the striking lines and front end that demands attention. If you're looking for an entry level car with a spirited 2L turbo charged engine, made in Italy, this may be the perfect car for you. Of course, you could always go for the cookie cutter Camry, but why settle when you can have an Alfa Romeo that turns heads?

  3. Devante Metz 2024-10-04

The car has gorgeous styling and is great fun to drive, making it perfect for long trips. It includes competitive features such as Apple Car Play and adaptive cruise control, which are luxuries you wouldn't necessarily expect from an Alfa. However, there are a few downsides to the car. One deal breaker for me was the stability control system that kicks in violently if there's the slightest bit of wheelspin. In the rain, you really have to feather the throttle. Additionally, the trunk is undersized and can only fit 2 checked bags or a trip to Costco. Fortunately, the rear seats fold down, but then you've only got a 3- or 2-seater, with your stuff on full display. There's no spare, so you're stuck with mediocre performance run-flat tires that last a maximum of 20k miles until the inner tread gets corded. There are occasional electronics glitches where the dash lights up with warnings, but of course, these are never repeatable at the dealership. One of my high beams is out, and 4-1/2 months after the dealer placed an order, there's still no ETA. Despite these concerns, the low residual price means a lot of car for the money, and as an Italian car nut, I would still recommend it to others.

  4. Fernando Renner 2024-09-16

This little firecracker is amazing! It's so much fun to drive, I feel like I'm 23 again. The sumptuous red interior is really sexy and makes you feel like you're in something special. Sure, the tires could be a bit wider, but overall this car is great. The transmission pops through the gears effortlessly, making it a real driver's car.
