The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1996 Ford F-250 sd problems

The Ford F-250 SD 1996 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine troubles, suspension issues, and steering difficulties.

Engine troubles are the most common problem reported by owners of the Ford F-250 SD 1996. The engine proved to be especially difficult in this model, with specific issues such as EGR failure, stalling engine while driving, and sudden loss of power. These engine troubles can be costly and inconvenient for drivers, as they may require expensive replacements.

Suspension issues were also a significant problem for the Ford F-250 SD 1996. These issues can lead to an inability to control the vehicle and may include expensive repairs that may not last long if the vehicle is prone to wear and tear on the suspension. The most apparent suspension issues included death wobble, hyper shaking, and shaking and loss of control. These problems were most widespread in the 2006 and 2011 models.

Steering difficulties were another common problem reported by owners of the Ford F-250 SD 1996. These issues included wobbles when steering and locking up the steering wheel. The 2017 model was particularly prone to steering difficulties, though Ford quickly jumped on this problem and fixed it.

In addition to these common problems, the Ford F-250 SD 1996 has also been subject to recalls due to issues with the fuel system, transmission, equipment, steering, brakes, lighting, wheels, seats, electrical system, structure, visibility, suspension, and engine. The largest recall of the model came in 1978 when cars were invited to dealerships for troubleshooting with 10 issues.

To avoid these common problems, it is recommended that owners of the Ford F-250 SD 1996 perform regular preventive maintenance and monitor the vehicle for early signs of issues. This can help detect problems early on and avoid costly large repairs down the road.

Is the 1996 Ford 5.8 a good engine?

The 5.8L (351 cubic inch V8) is a solid engine, and has been for many years. It is one of the last years Ford used a push rod engine in their truck line (in 1998, Ford went to their overhead cam engines for the Super Duty trucks). The manual transmission, however, is not the strongest part of your prospective truck.
