The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2005 Porsche Cayenne turbo problems

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo, produced in 2004 and 2005, is known for its performance and luxury features. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.

  • Starter Motor: The cooling system isn't the only component that fails under the Cayenne intake manifold; the starter is also located there. Starters can fail due to wear and tear, but in the Cayenne, they often fail prematurely due to exposure to coolant.
  • Ignition Coils: Another common issue with the 955 Cayenne is the ignition coils. These components are held in place by plastic vanity covers that are bolted on with T25 Torx bit screws. Replacing them requires specific tools, such as an inverted Torx or E10, which may not be readily available in standard toolsets.
  • Air Compressor: The Cayenne has an electronically controlled air suspension that uses a compressor pump to raise and lower the ride height. Leaks in the system can cause the compressor to run constantly, leading to premature wear and failure.
  • Air Struts: The Cayenne uses air struts instead of traditional gas or hydraulic shocks. These struts allow the vehicle to adjust the ride height in off-road conditions, but they can be expensive to replace when they fail.
  • Torque Mount: The torque mount, located on the left-hand side of the engine bay, is used to keep the powerful engine in place. Over time, this mount can wear out, leading to engine movement and potential damage to other components.
  • Engine Cooling Issues: The 2003-2010 Porsche Cayenne is known for its cooling system issues, particularly with the plastic coolant pipes that can't handle high temperatures and may fracture or leak. This can lead to leaking coolant, which may damage other critical components .
  • Turbo Problems: The turbocharged engines in the Cayenne can experience issues, such as turbocharger failure, which can be costly to repair. It's essential to have the vehicle regularly inspected and maintained to avoid these problems .

When purchasing a used Porsche Cayenne Turbo, it's crucial to be aware of these common issues and have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring or identify them early, saving potential repair costs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-12
  • VIN: WP1AC29P95L
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We purchased the 2005 Porsche Cayenne from my brother-in-law in August of 2022. He had owned the vehicle for at least a year before I purchased it from him. Shortly after the purchase, I noticed the engine light came on. On 09/12/22 a strong smell of fuel was emitting from the vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Denton, Texas at approximately 1030pm. I noticed a large puddle of gasoline on the ground under the vehicle and it was steady stream of fuel while the vehicle was running. The vehicle was completely unsafe to drive for fear of ignition and fire. Due to the time and location, I had the vehicle towed to my mechanic approximately 3 miles away for diagnosis and/or repair. The closest Porsche dealership was approximately 25 miles away and the tow bill would have been excessive. Mechanic identified the problem as a cracked fuel filter flange/housing that sat on top of the fuel pump. The cracked fuel housing was replaced and the total for parts and labor was $462.48. No leaking fuel since repair. A few weeks later my brother-in -law contacted me and advised he had just received a recall (OCTOBER 2022) in the mail from Porsche for the exact part I had repaired (17V-576 / AH10). He mailed me the recall and I contacted Porsche for a reimbursement. They stated they only refund for repairs done at a Porsche dealership. I believe Porsche should cover the repair cost for their faulty equipment even after the recall was received. A Porsche Service Center would charge Porsche Corporate much more for this repair than what I paid. Please assist me in getting a refund for my expense of ($462.48) for the repair of Porsche's recall. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  • Summary: GOOGLE: CAYENNE WET FLOOR. ALL CAYENNE HAVE ISSUE WITH POOR WATER DRAINAGE SYSTEM ACCORDING TO THE WEBSITES. MY CAR WAS DRIVING FINE BEFORE I PARKED IT, THEN WHEN I TRY TO START IT, I GOT AN ERROR ON THE INFO DISPLAY IN RED: IGNITION LOCK FAULT, ABS BRAKE PROPORTIONING. NO CRANK FROM THE BATTERY, TRANSMISSION LOCKED IN PARK. SO I GOOGLED IT AND FOUND MANY OWNERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD REPORTING THIS ISSUE. THE DRAINAGE UNDER THE WINDSHIELD CAN GET BLOCKED EASILY WITH DEBRIS, AND CAUSE WATER TO OVERFLOW INSIDE THE CABIN AND OR ELECTRICAL MODULES LOCATED IN THE WINDSHIELD COWL AREA. ON THE DRIVER SIDE AS PER VIDEO, I REMOVED THE RUBBER CARPET AND FORCED LIFTED THE PERMANENT CARPET, AND FOUND POOL OF WATER UNDERNEATH, ON THE METAL FLOOR WAS A BUNCH OF WIRES CONNECTING TO THE CAR BATTERY UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT WERE ALL UNDER WATER. I STARTED EMPTYING BUT MORE WATER KEPT COMING, FOAMS, RUBBERS WERE ALL SOAKED. ACCORDING TO THE FORUMS AFTER REMOVING ALL WATER, I NEEDED TO LOCATE 3 SET OF WIRES AMONGST THE BUNCH, THESE 3 ARE JOINED BY TWISTING AND WRAPPED WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE/GAUGE FROM THE FACTORY. THESE WIRES SINCE EXPOSED ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CORROSION. 1 SET OF WIRE COMPLETELY SNAPPED, APPARENTLY 1 WIRE IS FOR ABS BRAKE, AND THE OTHER IS FOR IGNITION KEY LOCK THAT RENDERS THE CAR IMMOBILIZED. I FOLLOWED THE VIDEO DESCRIBING THE STEPS TO FIX THIS ISSUE MYSELF, AND BIG BOLD LETTERS ON VIDEOS TO DO NOT BRING THE CAR TO THE DEALER AS THEY WILL CHARGE THOUSANDS, IF MODULES NEED REPLACING, RUST AN OWNER RECORDED A VIDEO ONLINE OF HIS CAYENNE DASH STOP WORKING, ALL LIGHTS BLINKING WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. LUCKILY MINE MALFUNCTIONED WHILE PARKED AT HOME, NOT DRIVING WITH MY FAMILY. I HAVE 2 CAYENNE, A 2005 AND 2008 THAT MY WIFE DRIVES. I NEED TO FOLLOW FORUM INSTRUCTION IN CLEANING THE DRAINAGE AND REMOVING THE GROMMET THAT CAN BE BLOCKED AND CAUSE WATER NOT TO DRAIN.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-03-30
  • VIN: WP1AC29P65L
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I PARKED THE CAR IN THE GARAGE AFTER RUNNING ERRANDS. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE GARAGE THE NEXT MORNING THERE WAS A LARGE PUDDLE OF FLUID SURROUNDING THE CAR BELOW. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STATED THAT I NEEDED TO CHECK COOLANT LEVEL. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE PORSCHE OF PLANO AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE WRITER THAT THE COOLANT PIPES ARE A COMMONLY KNOWN, WELL DOCUMENTED POINT OF FAILURE. HE SUGGESTED I RUN A SEARCH ON GOOGLE. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AND JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT PORSCHE USED PLASTIC MATERIALS IN THE DESIGN OF THE COOLANT PIPES WHICH ARE LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. THE PLASTIC BECOMES BRITTLE OVER TIME DUE TO THE HEAT FROM THE ENGINE. WHEN IT BECOMES BRITTLE ENOUGH IT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO LOOSE ALL FLUID IMMEDIATELY. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN CARS WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND OTHERS THAT ARE PARKED. PORSCHE DOES NOT SUPPLY THE SAME PARTS TO REPAIR A FAILURE. PORSCHE INSTEAD SELLS A KIT MADE OF ALUMINUM PIPING THAT IS DESIGNED NOT TO WITHSTAND THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE ORIGINALLY BEEN MANUFACTURED. THE COST FOR THE KIT AND LABOR RANGES BETWEEN $2,000 - $3,000. THE ISSUE IS NOW PART OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT DUE TO THE NUMBER OF OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. *TR

PORSCHE REPLACED IT ONCE UNDER WARRANTY AND THE OTHER TWO TIMES I HAD TO PAY IN EXCESS OF $900.00 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY PORSCHE THAT IT HAS A DEFIECTIVE RUBBER SEAL AND WHEN THE SEAL FAILS SO DOES HE DRIVE SHAFT. THIS IS A COMMON DEFECT AND IS KNOW BY PORSCHE AT THE DEALERS AND THE MANUFACTURER. THEY HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE DEFECT TO ME. MY CONCERN IS IF THE DRIVE SHAFT TOTALLY FAILS AND BREAKS, NOT JUST FLEXING AND HITTING THE FLOOR, IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT BY MAKING THE VEHICLE GO OUT OF CONTROL. *TR

  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel filter flanges with new filter flanges that have a protective film, free of charge. The recall began July 6, 2018. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is AH10.

  • Manufacturer: PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER CARS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." ALL THREE REAR SEAT POSITIONS AND THE FRONT PASSENGER POSITION ARE EQUIPPED WITH SEAT BELT RETRACTORS THAT HAVE A LOCKING FEATURE WHICH CONVERTS THE RETRACTOR FROM AN EMERGENCY LOCKING RETRACTOR (ELR) MODE TO AN AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR (ALR) MODE FOR THE PURPOSES OF CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLATION. THE BELT MAY DEACTIVATE THE ALR MODE WITH CERTAIN CHILD RESTRAINTS.
  • Consequence: WHEN INVOLVED IN A CRASH, THE CHILD RESTRAINTS MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SECURED INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY INSTALL A CLIP IN EITHER OF THE AFFECTED REAR OUTBOARD SEAT BELTS AND PROVIDE AN OWNER'S MANUAL INSERT. THE CLIPS WILL PREVENT UNWARRANTED CONVERSION FROM ALR TO ELR MODE WITH CHILD SEAT INSTALLATION. THE RECALL BEGAN MAY 17, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT PORSCHE AT 1-800-545-8039.
