2020 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common 2020 Honda Insight problems
The 2020 Honda Insight has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical system. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Engine Problems: The 2020 Honda Insight has faced multiple engine-related problems, including excessive oil consumption and engine knock or ping. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and decreased vehicle performance.
- Electrical System Issues: The electrical system of the 2020 Honda Insight has been reported to have problems, such as driveline vibration, electrical failure, and issues with traction control and electronic stability control. These problems can affect the overall drivability of the vehicle and may require costly repairs.
- AC System: A ticking sound coming from the central AC vent has been reported by some owners, which is believed to be a stuck solenoid on the temperature control swing door. This issue can be inconvenient and may require disassembling the dashboard to fix.
- Fuel System: The 2020 Honda Insight has been subject to a recall due to a potential issue with the low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank, which may fail and cause the engine to stall. This issue can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly free of charge.
- BCM Software Error: Another recall has been issued for the 2020 Honda Insight due to a software error in the Body Control Module (BCM) that may cause intermittent or continuous disruptions in communication between various systems, such as the windshield wipers, defroster, rearview camera, exterior lights, audible warning of a stopped vehicle, and power window operation. This issue can affect the vehicle's compliance with federal safety standards and may require a software update.
- DC-DC Converter: The 2020 Honda Insight has also been subject to a recall due to a potential issue with the DC-DC converter, which may shut down and prevent the 12-volt battery from recharging, possibly resulting in a loss of drive power. This issue can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, and dealers will update the power converter unit (PCU) software free of charge.
- Powertrain: Some owners have reported issues with the powertrain, including vibration when accelerating and turning from a stopped position. This issue can affect the overall drivability of the vehicle and may require costly repairs.
- Brakes: Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, and antilock system issues have been reported by some owners, which can affect the vehicle's safety and performance. These issues may require costly repairs and maintenance.
In summary, the 2020 Honda Insight has faced several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical system. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and decreased vehicle performance, and some of them have resulted in recalls.
What is the common problem Honda Insight?
Problem: It is common on the Honda Insight for the fuel cap release switch to fail. The fuel cap release switch is located at the right hand side of the drivers side footwell and the problem is caused by corrosion, or failure of the release spring.
Is the Honda Insight a reliable car?
The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 16% for the Honda Insight, compared to an average of 9% for alternative fuel vehicles and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.
Why Honda Insight is not selling?
Fuel Economy
However, subsequent design changes to the model (including adding more seats) decreased the MPG, thus allowing the Prius to usurp it in terms of sales. The Insight never recovered, and earlier this month, Honda dealers announced they would no longer be ordering more Insights for their lots.
Why did Honda stop making the Honda Insight?
The End of a Classic Hybrid
Although the current Honda Insight is a 10th-generation Civic with styling tweaks and a hybrid powertrain, Honda wants to focus on using core models to increase hybrid volume. To further this goal, the company has announced that it will be investing in new, more efficient hybrid technology.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
- VIN: 19XZE4F59LE
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving on a two lane road driving over a small paved bridge going about 40mph with a car next to me and a car behind me nothing in front of me when my car did a hard phantom brake. No pre warning, the display did show BRAKE and it did beep. But everything was sudden. Luckily the car behind was able to slam on brakes. The car behind me continued to follow but was at least 4 car lengths away. I assume bc they didn't know why I braked.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 19XZE4F57LE
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
- Summary: I believe the tire, wheel or suspension system failed while driving on the highway, causing me to hit my head on the driver's window and lose cosciousness. I skidded into a concrete barrier on the right side of the highway and was found unconscious at the scene. The damage to the passenger side body of the vehicle is minor and does not match the catastrophic failure of the wheel, leading me to believe the wheel failed and caused the crash, not that the crash resulted in the damage to the wheel. The vehicle is currently at a tow lot and available for inspection. Luckily, no other vehicles were involved, but I was injured and could have easily been killed, or injured and killed others as it is a busy highway, especially during rush hour when this occurred. Inspection by the insurance company is pending. The police did not investigate as a safety incident because they immediately said on site that almost all single vehicle accidents are drug/alcohol related and treated it like a DUI stop. I passed field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer on scene and blood work at the hospital showed no drugs or alcohol in my system. I am missing time and memories starting about 5 minutes before the crash and for about 30 minutes after as a result of my concussion, I do not remember much besides a feeling that my car was falling, then I remember being woken up by the cop asking if I was under the influence.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 19XZE4F5XLE
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: On September 16, 2022, I was in an accident where a driver hit me on the rear passenger side. I went a through a green light of an intersection on the Mopac N feeder Road and Duvall. Either both our lights were green or the other driver was dishonest and his was red. Every airbag deployed. Based on the impact, it would be highly unlikely to sustain a cracked sternum. The impact was to the right and slightly behind me. I have requested information from Honda America on the airbags and they refuse. They further insulted me by telling to go to a dealership. After this, Honda is the last car I would purchase or lease. Having worked at dealerships for many years, I am certain Honda knows, as well as I do, that the dealer cannot or will not give me compete information on the airbags. My car was maintained and in amazing condition. The last time I was at First Texas Honda for service, the advisor brought it around because they were very busy. He said he was stunned it had 125,000 miles on it. It drove like it was brand new. Please see photos and reports. If you need any further information, please let me know.

THE WARNING LIGHT ON DASH BOARD INDICATED IN RED " POWER SYSTEM " BOTTOM OF IT IN WHITE LIGHT " POWER SYSTEM PROBLEM DO NOT DRIVE" THEN A MINUTE LATER, THE WARNING LIGHT CHANGED TO A RED LOGO OF A BATTERY 12 VOLT BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM PROBLEM DO NOT DRIVE.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
- VIN: 19XZE4F53LE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On July 22, 2022 I was driving my Honda Insight 2020. I was on the highway, current mileage on vehicle 50,796 miles, my speed was normal at 65 MPH when the car lost the ability to accelerate and it stalled. I was forced to make an emergency stop on the side of the interstate. Vehicle displayed on the dashboard "Critical Failure Detected. Stop Driving When Safe" The acceleration on the car kept decreasing and when stop it displayed "Power System Problem. Do Not Drive." Pulling to the side of the interstate was very scary because trucks were flying at about 80mph. I requested for tow company to pick me up but after hour wait, I gave up waiting on the tow truck. I restarted the vehicle and I was able to take off again. The fuel gas showed half of tank so I continue to drive. Forty miles later down the road, the same issue occurred again. I waited 30 minutes and since I was near a gas station I filled up the gas tank to full capacity. I drove another 100 miles (very skeptical) until I reached my final destination. During my drive I felt like the car had difficulties going into gear above 65MPH. The following day I took the vehicle to the Honda dealer, they said they couldn't pin point exactly what it is. Test show no issues on their diagnostic computer. However, the computer show a record of time and issue happening. They believe it is a fuel pump sensor relay. The vehicle senses I am out of fuel, which is not the case. Honda dealer will replace the sensor/relay and I will pay for it. The dealer states this vehicle is not part of a fuel pump recall. This issue needs to be addressed before it creates a scenario with fatalities, which can easily occur.

- Summary: Two instances of braking system activating at highway speeds. In one instance, it was broad daylight, there was some traffic but nothing in my lane for a good distance, highway speed (approximately 65 mph) short sharp braking maneuver that dropped the speed approximately 10mph. I assumed there was some reflected light off of a sign that messed with the sensors, but the second instance was at midnight, same highway, same speed, no one else on the road. In these instances, with light traffic, there was no danger to my safety but if this happens again under heavier traffic, it could conceivably cause someone to rear end the vehicle. I have not been able to reproduce the problem. There might’ve been a flash on the dashboard warning the system was activated, but I couldn’t say for sure. Vehicle is available for inspection.

It's a great car! The ride is so smooth and the technology is state of the art. Plus, being a Hybrid, it's great on gas and so much fun when riding in the HOV lane during rush hour on my way to work!!

This car drives like you're floating on a cloud. It's also very fuel-efficient and has luxurious interiors, all at an affordable price. I highly recommend it!

Great acceleration! The Touring model feels more like a luxury car than a Honda. The MPG is fantastic, and long drives are a breeze with heated seats, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The car turns well and feels incredibly smooth. It even accelerates hard up hills! The drive is great, and the car looks fantastic. I personally think that Modern Steel with a black interior is the best color.

20K on 2020 Touring. I love driving this car because it gets an amazing 50MPG in the real world. When the engine note becomes irritating, I simply switch to sport mode and find relief. The driving dynamics are even better than my previous 2014 Accord Hybrid, which had 119K on the clock, albeit slightly more chop. Overall, I think this car would make a fantastic touring car for two people.

This vehicle is perfect for me! It's efficient, fun to drive, and easy to maintain. I love doing my own maintenance, and Honda makes it a breeze. The maintenance minder tells me exactly what needs to be done and when. With 30,000 miles on the clock, this car just keeps getting better and better. I'm averaging 49 to 52 mpg for the combined city and highway driving that I do. And the best part? I actually have two of these cars - my wife bought a 2021 model, which I also get to maintain. Even though she barely warms it up running to the grocery store, the mileage is still impressive.

Good gas mileage. Although, I must say that the safety features are not up to the mark as compared to other cars I have owned. In case of even a little snow or rain, everything shuts down which can be quite frustrating. The time when you need the safety features the most is when you cannot depend on them. Additionally, the car sits quite low and there is a shield under the engine that keeps coming down. Honda has repaired it 4 times now and I do not have much confidence in their work.
