The Land Rover Range Rover Sport, generally known as the Range Rover Sport, is a mid-size luxury SUV produced under their Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The first generation (codename: L320) started production in 2005, and was replaced by the second generation Sport (codename: L494) in 2013, replaced by the third generation Sport (codename: L461) in 2022.

Range Stormer concept

The Range Rover Sport was prefigured by the Range Stormer concept car, introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show.

This was a low-slung, short wheelbase 3-door coupé that was unusually "sporty" in the context of Land Rover's history. Designed by Richard Woolley, the marque's first complete concept car sported split-folding gullwing doors, one-piece skeletal seats, a "clamshell" bonnet, 22 inch alloys, a 289 km/h (180 mph) top speed, 4WD and a 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) weight. The Range Rover Sport was comparably of much more conservative design featuring five doors and a wheelbase hardly shorter than that of the Range Rover Vogue.

A replica of the Stormer was built by West Coast Customs of Corona, CA for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, on the occasion of opening West Coast Customs Dubai; the car is currently registered under the Dubai Traffic And Road Authority.

The Range Stormer is now on display at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire, UK.

Common 2008 Land rover Range rover sport problems

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2008 has been known to have several common problems that affect its performance, safety, and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Differential Bearings: A consistent whining or droning sound coming from the car can be a sign of dry bearings in the differential. This problem can be caused by worn-out gears or silver filings in the oil, which indicate that the gears are wearing out. Replacing the differential is a challenging task that requires expertise and specialized equipment.
  • Front Hub and Bearing Failure: A grinding noise coming from one or more of the wheels can be a sign of front hub and bearing failure. This problem can be caused by wear and tear or damage to the bearings, which can lead to a loss of control and safety. Replacing the front hub and bearing requires specialized tools and knowledge.
  • Worn Drop Link Bushes: A rattling sound coming from the front of the car, especially when driving on uneven surfaces, can be a sign of worn drop link bushes on the front suspension tie bars. This problem can be caused by wear and tear or damage to the bushes, which can affect the car's handling and stability. Replacing the drop link bushes requires specialized tools and knowledge.
  • Transfer Box Failure: A knocking or clonking sound coming from the front of the car, especially at low speeds, can be a sign of transfer box failure. This problem can be caused by wear and tear or damage to the transfer box, which is part of the drivetrain. Replacing the transfer box can be very expensive and requires specialized tools and knowledge.
  • EGR Valve Problems: The EGR valve can get clogged up with a carbon build-up, leading to hesitation and a lack of power when accelerating. This problem can be caused by the normal operation of the engine and can be resolved by cleaning out the EGR valve with a small brush and some carb cleaner.
  • Handbrake Faults: A screeching noise when applying the handbrake or the handbrake not releasing properly can be a sign of handbrake shoes collapsing. This problem can be caused by wear and tear or damage to the handbrake shoes, which can affect the car's safety and reliability. Replacing the handbrake shoes requires specialized tools and knowledge.

In summary, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2008 has several common problems that affect its performance, safety, and reliability. These problems can be caused by wear and tear, damage, or corrosion and can affect various parts of the car, including the brakes, differential, front hub and bearing, drop link bushes, transfer box, EGR valve, and handbrake. Addressing these problems requires specialized tools, knowledge, and expertise, and can be expensive. Therefore, it is important to maintain the car regularly and address any issues promptly to ensure its longevity and safety.

  • Summary: MY WIFE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP SIGN. WHEN SHE TRIED TO PULL OFF, THE VEHICLE REFUSED TO MOVE. TWO GOOD SAMARITANS PUSHED HER INTO A PARKING LOT. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. INSPECTION A FEW DAYS LATER REVEALED RUSTED AND STRIPPED SPLINES ON THE TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SHAFT AND TRANSFER CASE MATING PART. DURING MY RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM CAUSED BY ELECTROLYTIC MIGRATION DUE TO A LACK OF GREASE ON THE MATING PARTS DURING ASSEMBLY. PLEASE NOTE THE ABSOLUTELY CLEAN AREAS OF THE TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE APART FROM THE RUST DISLODGED DURING DISASSEMBLY.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-11
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: SALMF13448A
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS OVER THE COURSE OF ABOUT 10 YEARS, WITH FOOT PRESSING HARD ON BRAKE TOWARD BOTTOM LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAKE, THE CAR ACCELERATED. FIRST TIME, I WAS AT AN ATM. FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. I WAS LEANING OUT THE WINDOW GETTING MONEY OUT OF THE ATM AND THE CAR ACCELERATED. A LOUD NOISE OF IT RAMPING UP AND THEN IT JOLTED FORWARD. I IMMEDIATELY SAT BACK STRAIGHT IN THE CAR KEEPING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. WITHIN ABOUT 3 FEET THE CAR STOPPED. SECOND TIME WAS AT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. LEANING OUT TO GET THE FOOD, THE CAR ACCELERATED. MADE THE LOUD RAMPING UP SOUND. JERKED FORWARD AND IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. THIRD TIME, AT A PHARMACY DRIVE THROUGH, LEANING OUT TO GET THE MEDICATIONS, FOOT ON THE BRAKE. CAR ACCELERATED. LOUD RAMPING UP NOISE. LUNGED FORWARD ABOUT 2 FEET THEN STOPPED. MOST RECENT TIME, I WAS GETTING A TICKET AT A PARKING GARAGE GATE. LEANED OUT TO PRESS THE BUTTON TO GET THE TICKET. 100% POSITIVE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. PRESSED HARD ON THE BOTTOM LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAKE SO AS TO NOT SLIP. THE CAR MADE THE RAMPING UP SOUND, THEN ACCELERATED. WHEN I HEARD THE NOISE, I IMMEDIATELY SAT STRAIGHT AND KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE ENTIRE TIME. IT WENT ABOUT 15 FEET WITHOUT STOPPING - THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE GATE BENT AND THEN SCRAPPED DOWN THE SIDE OF MY CAR. (TRIED HARD TO DRIVE AROUND IT AFTER IT BENT). I RELEASED THE BRAKE AND THEN PRESSED IT AGAIN AND THE CAR STOPPED. I WAS ABLE TO PARK IT IN A PARKING SPACE IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT MAYBE 100 YARDS AWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AFTER THE LAST INCIDENT. THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. THEY INSISTED MY FOOT MUST HAVE PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR OR THE CARPET MUST HAVE BEEN PUSHED UP UNDER THE ACCELERATOR (THE CAR HAS RUBBER MATTS, THERE IS NO CARPET) AS A WORK AROUND, I NOW ALWAYS PUT IT IN PARK WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON WHENEVER I'M AT A DRIVE THROUGH.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-22
  • VIN: SALMH13408A
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE DURING RUSH HOUR, APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH KEEPING UP WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. WHEN THE VEHICLE ACTED AS IF IT WENT INTO NEUTRAL. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE SUV TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT CAUSING ANY ACCIDENTS. WHEN I TRIED TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK IT MADE A GRINDING SOUND AND BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARDS. I THEN APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON TO KEEP IT IN PLACE. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY HOUSE, AND AT A LATER DATE DURING INSPECTION OF THE DRIVE TRAIN I HAD NOTICED THAT THE LEFT DRIVERS SIDE TRANS AXLE HAD SEPARATED FROM THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OF MY RANGE ROVER. AT THAT POINT I REALIZED HOW LUCKY I WAS TO NOT HAVE BEEN EVOLVED IN ANY SORT OF MAJOR COLLISION. I BEGAN TO DO A LITTLE RESEARCH AND READ OF MANY SIMILAR CASES THAT INVOLVED THE FRONT WHEELS LOCKING UP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT DID NOT HAPPEN IN MY CASE, BECAUSE I WAS TRAVELING ON A BUSY STRETCH OF INTERSTATE DURING RUSH HOUR. I LATER CONTACTED LAND ROVER USA TO FILE A RECALL CLAIM, AND THEY INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOT ANY SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS MODEL YEAR AND PART.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-17
  • VIN: SALME15418A
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I AM WRITING TO ALERT YOU TO A SERIOUS POTENTIAL SAFETY DESIGN PROBLEM THAT CAUSED A SLOW LEAK IN THE FUEL LINE SYSTEM WITH MY 2008 RANGE ROVER HSE AND TO ASK FOR YOUR HELP FOR FURTHER POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD INVESTIGATION. THE ALUMINUM METAL DESIGN OF THE FUEL RAIL DEVELOPED A SEAL LEAK IN THE DAMPER THAT CAUSED A SLOW FUEL LEAK THAT I ONLY NOTICED RECENTLY AS I WAS WATCHING MY WIFE BACK THE VEHICLE DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. I WALKED OVER, TOUCHED THE LIQUID AND SMELLED IT TO VERIFY IN FACT THAT IT WAS A FUEL LEAK. IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE LEAK HAD BEEN THERE FOR QUITE A WHILE BUT WENT UNDETECTED DUE TO LACK OF FUEL VAPOR ENTERING THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR OR DETECTION BY ANY OF THE VEHICLES SAFETY/WARNING SYSTEMS. APPARENTLY, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESIGNED TO DETECT OR ALERT FOR SMALL BUT STEADY FUEL SYSTEM LEAKS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FUEL RAIL DAMPER SEAL FAILURE. VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT WHAT'S MORE TROUBLING IS THAT THEY REPLACED THE PART 'IN KIND' WITH NO DESIGN IMPROVEMENT

Negative 2008 Land rover Range rover sport car reviews

  1. Halle Lueilwitz 2025-01-08

The SUV is undoubtedly the best looking in its class. However, it's unfortunate that Land Rover has not yet addressed its mechanical issues. It can be frustrating when you reach 25000 miles and the dealer tells you that you need new brakes all around. Unfortunately, neither the dealer nor Land Rover will help, as they claim this is normal wear and tear. It's a shame, but hopefully, they will address these issues soon.

  2. Wilford Heller 2025-01-05

Hello! I wanted to provide an update to my April 2009 review. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with my vehicle that have been a bit frustrating. The clunking in the suspension returned about a month ago and it seems that the dynamic suspension is malfunctioning. The vehicle has been in the shop for two weeks now and it looks like it will require a disassembly of the chassis to repair. I'm not sure when the parts will arrive, but I'm hopeful that it will be resolved soon. I have tallied the cost to repair all of these warranty items and it has come to almost $5,000 in the first two years of ownership. This includes the catalytic converter, sway bar repair, and suspension actuator. Despite these issues, I'm still enjoying my time with the vehicle and plan to turn it in at the end of the lease. Thank you for taking the time to read my update!

Hi there! I wanted to check if there were any recalls issued for my vehicle, so I went online. I found a few that I hadn't been notified about, so I decided to contact customer service. I spoke with Terrance, who informed me that no recalls had been issued. I was a bit confused since I had seen recall notices online, but Terrance assured me that there were none. Thank you for your help, Terrance!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Range Rover. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it over the past few years. It has spent a lot of time in my driveway broken down, and I've spent quite a bit of money on repairs. In the first year alone, I spent around 3k on normal maintenance items like suspension lights and limp mode. After all of this, I've come to the conclusion that it might be best to save your money for a more reliable car, like a space cruiser. Thanks for listening!

It's important to note that new repairs are often required during oil change services. These repairs can range from suspension bushings, air suspension, and complete drive train - transmission, transfer case, front rear differentials to AC, dash servos, tire monitor system, alternator, starter, power steering pump, and more.

I've only had it for a week, so I don't have much to go on yet. However, my first impressions are that it's one of the best drives out there. The seating position is very good, even for someone of my XL size. I've driven the full-size Range and the Sport, and while I loved the inside of the full-size, this one drives so much better. It really feels like a world-class sports car.

Driving the car has been a great experience! You'll also receive plenty of compliments because it looks fantastic. The brakes are very responsive and it handles curves really well for an SUV.

This is our first luxury SUV! We sat in a number of them at the Chicago Auto Show and had made up our minds before driving it. The dealer let us use one for the weekend and it sealed the deal. We've put on about 2000 miles so far and haven't had any issues. The stereo is amazing!

  4. Amari Cummerata 2024-10-08

This is the friendliest SUV I've ever owned. I've put 13K miles on it and have had to take it in for service a few times because of the 'check engine light'. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to find the root of the problem. I'm hopeful that the next generation will have better reliability. Despite this issue, I still think this is a really great SUV, especially in the mountains.

  5. Alfred Brakus 2024-09-10

This car is a blast to drive! I recently upgraded from my 2004 A8 4.2 to a 2007 RRS-SC and I am blown away by how amazing it is. I absolutely loved my Audi and this SUV is just as enjoyable to drive. I also own a GL 550, but it doesn't compare to the RRS in terms of fun factor. While the GL does have a better ride quality due to the RRS-SC's stiffness, the RRS makes up for it with its sporty nature and agility. It's a true driver's car and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a sexy, sporty ride. However, if you're looking for a soft, passenger-comfort car, the full-size Range Rover might be a better fit for you.
