2011 Ford Escape problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2011 Ford Escape problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Ford Escape 2011, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Issues: Owners have reported transmission problems with the 2011 Ford Escape, including transmission failure and slipping. Transmission failures can be sudden and occur around 60,000 miles, leading to costly repairs.
- Engine Stalling and Failure: Complaints include engine stalling without warning, engine failure, check engine light issues, and even engine fires. Repairs often involve replacing components like the coolant bypass valve, electronic throttle body, main wiring harness, or fuel sensor.
- Interior Design: While the cabin received a design overhaul with nicer materials, some complaints mention discomfort and lack of space. The seating position is too tall, lacking adjustments, and the backseat is flat without recline or fore/aft adjustments.
- Complex Cargo Space: Owners find the process of folding down the rear seats in the Escape complicated, as it requires removing headrests and tumbling the bottom cushions forward before flipping down the seatbacks. This design ensures a flat load floor but can be cumbersome for users.
- Steering Torque Sensor Recall: Ford issued a recall for the steering torque sensor in models from 2008 to 2011, addressing potential issues with this component. Recalls for safety-related concerns are typically done free of charge.
- Overall Reliability: While the Ford Escape is generally regarded as a reliable vehicle, some model years, including the 2011 Escape, have faced more reported issues compared to others. Prospective buyers are advised to conduct thorough research and inspections before purchasing a used vehicle.
These reported problems highlight key areas of concern for owners of the 2011 Ford Escape, ranging from performance issues like braking and transmission problems to interior comfort and design challenges.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-27
- VIN: 1FMCU0EG1BK
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I lose my power steering. First time it happened I had turned the steering wheel to its’ fullest extent, then lost the power steering.when I turn off the engine and restart it, the power returns. This has happened 4-5 times in the past 4-5 years… until today. Today it happened 4 times, just with normal turns (no hard banked turns) - again, I had to turn off the engine, then start it, with hopes that it reset itself. I’m 71, I CAN drive it without power steering, but I believe it’s dangerous and a safety hazard. Is my 2011 Ford Escape on a list for a replacement part? Thank you.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1FMCU9D76BK
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: This 2011 Ford Escape has a front K-frame (subframe) failure. The area where the front passenger lower control connects to the k-frame has completely rusted through, causing the lower control arm to almost detach from the vehicle at the front bushing. While driving, the steering wheel suddenly became crooked and the car was taken to a shop for an alignment. Upon inspection it was learned that the K-frame has rusted in that one area so badly that the wheel could become detached if the vehicle is driven any further. I see that Ford has this exact issue with 2001-2004 models and did a recall. However, they are not indicating that they are addressing this same problem with newer models.
2011 Ford Escape recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Ford Escape.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured February 26, 2009, to April 29, 2012, and 2010-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured February 25, 2009, to December 12, 2010. On vehicles with a 3.0L engine, the Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) may crack, causing a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the FDM flange with one that has a redesigned fuel supply port, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices were mailed to owners on December 13, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S41.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. Negative 2011 Ford Escape car reviews
Positive 2011 Ford Escape car reviews

I've been eyeing the Escape for a few years now, but I've always been hesitant due to the reviews. However, this year I decided to take another look. Since I get a new vehicle for business every year, I've had plenty of experience with the competition. I found that for $50K, you don't even get real leather in a Touareg. A $35K Wrangler is the real deal, but it rides harshly with bad road manners and the backseat is just for show. The Nissan's are a bit old-fashioned and expensive, while Hyundai's are no longer cheap or fuel-efficient. I looked at everything in the SUV market from $20-$60K, and everything negative I read about the Escape is even worse in cars that cost much more. The 2011 model has a fantastic interior, and the Limited version has everything you could possibly want.
-
I love everything about my Escape - the comfort, reliability, bells and whistles, etc. The color is white. I would definitely buy it again. I bought it new in July 2011 and have taken good care of it (35000 miles on it) lol.
-
This vehicle is great! It has never let me down.
-
This is a great car and I would definitely recommend this model to anyone.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the Escape after driving it for 6k miles. Overall, I think it's a charming little SUV that's capable both on and off the road, although it does have some limitations. Despite only having 4 cylinders, it handles well on the road, even in mountainous areas, and can easily maintain speeds of 70 to 80 mph. The seats are comfortable, although they can become a bit hard after a long drive. The interior is modern yet simple and looks great. It also handles light off-roading with ease. As a family of 4 who previously owned a larger SUV, we've found the Escape to be a great fit for us. Thanks for reading!

My wife purchased this car brand new in 2011. It worked great for three years and one month. Unfortunately, three weeks after our three-year warranty expired, the back left window regulator went out. Despite Ford refusing to replace it, we had it replaced for $200. One month later, the back right window regulator went out, followed by the AC. Recently, the sunroof stopped opening and closing. We have owned this car for four and a half years and have had to get more things fixed than any car I have ever owned. While the car looks nice and drives fine in my opinion, the cost of owning it is ridiculous. I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing an Escape or any Ford vehicle again.
Gust Lemke 2024-11-13
I recently purchased an Escape, which I had always wanted. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. The throttle body needed to be replaced and I had to pay out of pocket for the repair. Even after the repair, the part is already tearing up again. This has made driving the car dangerous, as it stalls out in the middle of the road and won't move when I try to give it gas. As a lifelong Ford fan, I am disappointed with my experience and would caution anyone considering purchasing an Escape to think twice.

I've had this vehicle for about a month now and it's been a great purchase so far. However, I have noticed that the gas mileage is not as advertised, with an average of 19.5 and only 22 on the highway and 18 in the city. I'm also experiencing some build quality issues, but I'm hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve them. One specific issue is that the passenger side mud guard behind the rear wheel doesn't fit properly.

Hi there! I'm currently in the market for a pre-owned mid-sized SUV and I've heard great things about the Ford Escape. I really prefer the boxy look of the older mid-sized SUVs and I've had the pleasure of test driving the Escape and I absolutely loved it! I'm not interested in a car, so a mid-sized, older SUV is perfect for me. I've visited dealerships and have even stopped to admire Escapes parked on the street. However, out of the 18 Escapes from 2012 and earlier that I've looked at or test driven, all but 2 had one major problem in common - premature rust! Needless to say, I was quite disappointed. I had my heart set on a 2012 or older Escape, but I don't want to start off with a problem that will only get worse. It's frustrating to have to start my search again, especially since I've already eliminated other makes. I've had similar issues with rust on previous Ford vehicles, such as the F-150 and F-250. If it weren't for the rust issue, I would buy the right Escape in a heartbeat.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I've encountered another issue with my car. Unfortunately, when driving in heavy rain, water seems to be coming into the passenger compartment from below and completely soaking the interior floor. This is in addition to the problems I've reported earlier, such as the hoot and poor build quality. I'm feeling quite disappointed with the overall workmanship of the car. At this point, I'm afraid that this will be my last Ford.
