2009 Ford Escape problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 1FMCU93G99K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Yesterday, [XXX], the power steering first temporarily went out on a curve and came back on and I was able to continue driving with power steering. After I stopped the vehicle for roughly 1.5 hours (planned stop), it no longer worked. I was a short distance from home and returned home and parked the vehicle. I was not going a high rate of speed when the temporary loss occurred; however, there is a great accident risk for this issue, especially in a heavy traffic and/or higher speed area. I started it twice today to see if it worked and it is not working. The system message says “power steering assist fault” on the dash. This was displaying yesterday and is also today. My vehicle was manufactured in Kansas City, MO and I am requesting the VIN be reviewed and included as part of the recall, 14S05A. Please assist as soon as possible so this can be resolved. - Summary: Brake pedal very light, goes clear to floor then within last inch brakes activate. I replaced master brake cylinder in hopes that would fix, it did not. I scheduled an appointment with dealership to diagnose in which they were not able to and had me return it to the original mechanic after flushing fluid out checking for corrosion, they replaced the master cylinder again. That did not fix the brake issue. I’m returning it to Ford dealership to once more diagnose and potentially replace the ABS module. This model is known for having a test one placed on in which needed replaced. It’s the exact same part number as the ABS module recalled and replaced on a few other models. The recall number for other models is 19V904000, no corrosion in reservoir upon flush and dot 3 was placed back inside. The part number at hand for the multiple vehicles is 12-17242

- Summary: This year and model is under a Ford Motor company recall number 14S05 which is the steering torque sensor. this device when failing will cause the power steering to go out and make it almost impossible to steer. Which obviously can cause a major accident. I have called Ford Motor company as well as the local dealerships and they both stated that this is a specific VIN number eligibility recall. The issue is whether or not my 2009 Ford escape made the list is irrelevant because that is exactly what the vehicle is doing and should be serviced at Ford motor company's expense. This car has been fantastic for everyday use! I purchased it new 9 years ago and it has held up well, even with dogs. The chairs are very comfortable. While the lift gate no longer opens, we can still use the back window. The heating and cooling only have two working settings, full blast or hardly any, but other than that, we have had no issues whatsoever! It has plenty of space for 4-5 people and ours even has a sunroof and leather seats. It is very easy to clean and overall, it is a great car!
-
Before making a purchase, it might be a good idea to consider renting the car first. The noise level inside the car can be quite high and tends to worsen over time. Additionally, there were some issues with the Bluetooth connectivity that required two trips to the repair shop. Unfortunately, even after the repairs, some of the dashboard lights were still not functioning properly. While we did experience some difficulties with this car, it is worth noting that we have had similar issues with other Ford models in the past, such as the 1998 and 2009 models.

Love the Escape! It's great to hear that it has great handling and is very comfy. I'm glad to hear that you found a vehicle that didn't drag bottom when you were on rough roads. It's also great to hear that it's very roomy inside for a small SUV and gets great gas mileage. I would definitely recommend it to a friend!

Perfect for a new driver.

I have my white suede loaded Limited I4 09 Escape. It's a great little truck! The seat feels comfortable to drive in, and there are plenty of buttons to use. It has plenty of power to merge onto the freeway or get in front of trouble. My son enjoys riding in the back seat. The AC/fan and heater are strong, too. The little touches like ambient lighting are cool. I didn't get the pretty but expensive Nav system, but the Voice Sync controls work great anyway. I linked my phone to Sync in less than 30 seconds, and it works great. Now I never even take my phone out of my pocket to make and receive calls. I love the Audiophile sound system, too!

I was doing fine until the transmission died at 36200 miles. Fortunately, I had bought an extended warranty and got it fixed at the dealer. However, it is still giving me troubles, as I still experience sudden gear changes at low speeds. I am not sure how long this fix will last, and I am always scared to take my family on a drive in this car. On the positive side, it has ample cargo space, feels sturdy, has nice seats, is very fuel-efficient, and I love the SYNC. I even hooked up an external hard drive to it, and it recognizes and plays all my music. However, there are some cons to consider, such as an unreliable transmission, not-so-nice interior made of pretty cheap plastic, and it is quite noisy. I reckon being an I4 engine it will be noisy, but it is a little too much.

My 2009 Ford Escape experienced multiple issues with the A/C, motor parts, and transmission within 18 months. Despite the great appearance of the body and interior, the cost of repairs almost equaled the total value of the vehicle. It is important to note that the transmission has a known flaw, which Ford is aware of. As a result of this experience, I have decided to explore other vehicle options in the future.

The frame is constructed like a toy car. The sheet metal is essentially plastic, and if the wheel wells and control arms start rusting, your shocks may become ineffective and even perforate the interior. It's a good idea to call a mechanic in your area and ask them how often they see rust issues on these vehicles. It's also worth doing some research. If you happen to find one that has no rust, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well the car drives and how spacious it is.

This car has had a number of recalls, which some technicians have explained as Ford's commitment to customer safety. However, it is clear that there have been some poor design choices made by a company that has been in the car-making business for a long time. While innovation is important, it is equally important to ensure that the car's transmission is reliable. It is disappointing that the transmission in this car has been problematic, and it is reasonable to question whether it was adequately tested before being put into production. While all cars have their issues, this one seems to have more than its fair share. It is worth noting that there are many reports of transmission problems with this car online.

After driving the car for a week, I noticed that the steering wheel vibrated quite a bit while idling at red lights. As I continued to use the A/C, the vibration spread to the entire dash and my passengers could feel it too. Despite my concerns, the dealer informed me that all V4's had this issue and refused to fix it. The service reps and Ford representatives also stated that the car was operating as designed. Unfortunately, the vibration continued to worsen and eventually became so bad that even the antenna on the passenger side outside the car would vibrate with the inside of the car. Despite my frustration, I eventually traded it in for a Mazda.
