1999 Buick Century problems
Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.
The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.
Series 60 (1930–1935)
Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.
In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.
In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

Common 1999 Buick Century problems
Based on the sources provided, here are the common problems with the 1999 Buick Century based on owner complaints:
- Engine Performance: Complaints included the engine running extremely rough, jumping, ticking, and knocking before stalling out. Replacing the timing chain, MAF sensor, EGR valve, and checking fuel pressure did not resolve the issue. Suggestions included checking the crankshaft position sensor and ignition control module.
- Power Window Assembly: The Buick Century is known for cheap plastic clips inside the power window assemblies breaking, causing the window to drop into the door. Dealerships often recommend replacing the entire pulley assembly, which can be costly.
- Coolant Leaks: Another common issue is coolant leaks due to intake manifold gasket failure. This problem has led to a class action lawsuit related to leaking coolant from the intake manifold gasket.
- Transmission Problems: Some complaints involved transmission issues, which could impact the overall performance and drivability of the vehicle. Owners reported various transmission-related concerns.
These common problems with the 1999 Buick Century highlight issues related to engine performance, power window assembly, coolant leaks, and transmission problems. Addressing these issues promptly and accurately can help maintain the vehicle's reliability and performance.

RECENTLY HAD BRAKES REPLACED AND WAS TOLD THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1100. THE CAR RUNS WELL, BUT HAS SERIOUS RUST ON THE RAIL BELOW THE DOORS. NOT SURE I SHOULD SPEND THAT MUCH ON A 16 YR OLD CAR. I'VE ALSO HAD TO HAVE A MOTOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW REPAIRED. THAT SEEMS TO BE A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL, TOO.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-05-15
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 2G4WS52M8X1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I'VE HAD MY BUICK CENTURY FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW, OVER THE YEARS THE QUALITY OF MY CAR HAS SERIOUSLY DETERIORATED. MOST OF MY PROBLEMS ARE ELECTRICAL. WHEN I START MY CAR - NOT ONLY DOES IT LIKE TO TRY AND START ON IT'S OWN WHEN I PUT MY KEY INTO ACCESSORY (BATTERY MODE). THIS HAS MADE ME GO THROUGH ABOUT 3 STARTERS INCLUDING IT'S ORIGINAL, BUT ONCE IT HAS STARTED I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO POWER. EVENTUALLY IT WILL COME ON. DURING THE SUMMER WITH THE HEAT IT SEEMS LIKE IT NEVER WANTS TO WORK. IT WILL USUALLY START WITH NO PROBLEMS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. BUT NOW WITH WINTER COMING I AM SEEING THAT ELECTRICAL ISSUES ARE CONTINUING, WHEREAS THE ELECTRICITY DOES NOT COME ON. I HAVE NO RADIO, NO SPEEDOMETER, NO GAS, NO MILEAGE, NOTHING. MY HEAT IS ALSO NOT COMING ON. THE FUSE BOX SWITCH SEEMS TO BE BLOWN OR SOMETHING EVERY FUSE THAT GOES INTO THE FUSE SOCKET FOR THE BLOWER MOTOR OR RELAY POPS AND NO LONGER WORKS. ALONG WITH THIS I HAD A FUSE FIRE IN MY CAR (I THINK). IT HAPPENED IN MY DOOR WHEN I WAS ROLLING MY WINDOWS DOWN ONE DAY. EVER SINCE THEN MY WINDOWS DO NOT WORK THE SAME, AND OVER TIME THEY DO NOT WORK AT ALL. I'VE CHANGED THE CONTROLLER TWICE AND IT DOESN'T WORK. ALONG WITH THE WINDOW ISSUES- WHEN MY CONTROLLER DID WORK- MY WINDOWS LIKED TO GET STUCK. YOU COULD ROLL THEM DOWN BUT THEY WOULD NOT COME BACK UP. ONE WINTER I WAS DRIVING HOME I HAD AN HOUR LONG DRIVE AND 5 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW ROLLED DOWN ALL ON ITS OWN AND WAS STUCK. LUCKILY IT WAS JUST VERY COLD AND NOT SNOWING. ALL OF THESE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ADDING ON OVER THE YEARS. THE FIRST PROBLEM THAT I EVER HAD WAS THE FUSE FIRE IN MY WINDOW. MY NEXT ISSUE OF CONCERN IS THE FLOODING THAT IS HAPPENING IN MY CAR. IT ONLY OCCURS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR ON THE FLOOR. THERE SEEMS TO BE ABSOLUTELY NO SOURCE FOR WHERE THIS WATER IS COMING FROM. *TR
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

THE TECHNICIAN WHO INSTALLED THE ENGINE, STATED THE CYLINDER HEADS WERE DAMAGED. *JB
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-05-10
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: VEHICLE HAS 150,000 MILES. SUDDENLY THE CAR HAS DIFFICULTY MAKING LEFT HAND TURNS. NOW WHEN TURNING LEFT THE POWER ASSIST FAILS, AND IT FEELS AS IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED UP, BUT YOU CAN FORCE THE WHEEL FURTHER LEFT IF YOU TRY, BUT IT IS VERY HARD TO DO. IF YOU AREN'T PREPARED FOR IT YOU COULD EASILY GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. BUT SOMETIME AS YOU FORCE THE WHEEL LEFT, THE RESISTANCE WILL SUDDENLY DISAPPEAR AND THE CAR WILL JERK TO THE LEFT. TURNING RIGHT IMMEDIATELY RETURNS NORMAL POWER ASSIST, UNTIL A LEFT TURN IS ATTEMPTED. NO FLUID IS LEAKING. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE ABS SENSOR AND OTHER WIRES WERE BOUND BY ELECTRICAL TAPE AND THE FUEL AND BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED. IN ADDITION, THERE WERE MISSING PLUGS WHICH PREVENTED WATER FROM ENTERING THE VEHICLE ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES. BOTH THE BRAKE LINE AND THE TRANSMISSION WERE LEAKING FLUIDS. THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE FRONT SUB FRAME AND THE FUEL FILLER NECK WAS CORRODED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT PART OF THE EXHAUST HANGER WAS MISSING AND THE REMAINING PARTS WERE CORRODED. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE FAR TOO COSTLY TO PERFORM ANY REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED MARCH 17, 2010. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-04-29
- VIN: 2G4WY52M0X1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 1999 BUICK CENTURY CORRODED, FLUID LEAKED AND THE BRAKES FAILED. FORTUNATELY, I NOTICED THE BRAKES BEGINNING TO FAIL (PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR), SO I DROVE DEFENSIVELY AND WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I WAS ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE FROM MY LOCAL GARAGE AND WENT THERE DIRECTLY TO HAVE THE LINES REPLACED. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE LINES HAD ROTTED THROUGH. I ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS IN AREAS THAT USE WINTER SALT, BUT HEARING OF THE RECALL OF GM TRUCKS, I NOW REALIZE THAT THIS MAY NOT BE A "NORMAL" EVENT. THE PARTS IN QUESTION ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. *TR

In July 1999, I reached out to my local Buick dealer via email and shared my requirements. To my surprise, the dealer responded promptly and informed me that the car I was looking for was available on their lot, except for a $75 stripe on the side. I was pleased with the offer and did not negotiate further. The dealer offered me the car at $200 over invoice, a $1500 rebate, and a $500+ credit from GM Card.

When my VW Golf TDI diesel broke down and I needed quick transportation, my husband found a great emerald green 1999 Buick on a sale lot. At first, I wasn't too thrilled about it since it looked like a 'granny car', but it had only 68,000 miles on it and a V6 engine. The price was good, so I decided to buy it. I named her 'Hilda' and she has been a reliable companion ever since. She always starts and gets me to my destination, and even though she needs a trip to the beauty parlor (car wash), I'm happy to keep her. Plus, insurance is cheap and she's already paid for! The trunk space is also adequate for both groceries and other items.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that my Buick has been with me since May of 1999 and has been such a reliable car. I've driven 100,000 miles with her and have never had any problems. She's been great!

Great value for the buck! I'm so glad to hear that you haven't had any major problems in the past 6 years and that you plan to keep it for at least another 3 years. The 6th seat is such a great alternative that is hard to find in new cars. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

It's a luxury car, so you can expect the parts to be a bit more expensive. However, it rides really smoothly and has a tough build. It has been very safe for me.

Driving a Buick Century for my 16th birthday wasn't the most stylish thing, but I absolutely loved it! This car has about 150,000 miles on it and has had no major problems, just a few minor things. The gas mileage is pretty decent and the seats are unbelievably comfortable. The stereo works incredibly well and is loud. It drives wonderfully on the highway and surprisingly does well in snow. The back seats are comfortable and offer tons of room. I would actually recommend this car over the car I drive now (Jeep Liberty). It was my first car and I still love it. I'm sure I would buy one again if I had the choice.

You've made a great purchase with this car! Although I've had a few issues, such as a failed front pass. side wheel bearing that cost around $500 to fix, overall it has been a reliable vehicle for the price of around 7 grand. The gas mileage is decent, averaging about 25 on the highway and 13 around town. However, since my commute is only 2 miles, the gas mileage suffers a bit. But, I can't complain too much since the car isn't even warmed up by the time I arrive at work.

I really liked this car for the quality of driving, it was very comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone, just be aware that the electric windows can be problematic.

This car is a fantastic option for anyone seeking comfortable and affordable transportation. The value for money is unbeatable, with a range of features included in the price. The 3.1L V6 engine is both powerful and fuel-efficient, making it a great choice for those who want to save on gas. Although the engine can be a bit noisy, it has a proven track record of reliability. The exterior design may be a bit dull, but the interior is well-designed and user-friendly. While the build quality could be improved, the interior and trunk are spacious and comfortable. The ride quality is smooth and comfortable, although the tires can be quite noisy. Overall, this car is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and affordable vehicle.

I bought this car used with 68k miles on it and have owned it for 3 years now with no problems, except for a blown battery (which wasn't the car's fault). The gas mileage is decent for a roomy car like this. The interior styling is a bit boring, but the features are there if you look for them. If you want to add some spice to this model, go for the Santa Fe red! The suspension is great at covering bumps in the road, but it handles more like an old Rolls Royce. The steering feel is numb but easy, and the engine is silent but powerful. This car is perfect for long highway trips or daily commutes, but it can be a bit tricky to park in cities.
