2010 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2010 Ford Escape problems

The 2010 Ford Escape is a compact SUV known for its innovative high-tech features and impressive crash scores. However, there are several common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequently reported issues is poor braking performance. The Escape's braking system has been criticized for being less responsive than those of its competitors. From 60 mph, the last Escape tested stopped in a disappointing 154 feet. This can be a significant safety concern, especially in emergency situations.

Another issue that has been reported by owners is the lack of mechanical polish and sophistication. The Escape's driving experience is described as feeling more trucklike compared to newer models from Chevrolet, Honda, Subaru, and Toyota. The electric power steering makes parking and low-speed maneuvers easy, but the suspension has been tweaked to be smoother over rough pavement.

The interior of the Escape has also been criticized for its lack of comfort and space. The seating position is too tall, which gives the driver the feeling of hovering above the controls. There is no telescoping steering wheel, and the backseat is flat and devoid of recline or fore/aft adjustments. Cargo space stands at 29 cubic feet behind the second row and 66 cubes with the second row folded down. However, folding it can be tricky, as the headrests must be removed and the bottom cushions tipped forward before the seatbacks can be flipped down.

In terms of mechanical issues, the 2010 Ford Escape has been reported to have problems with its engine, paint and trim, exhaust, transmission, electrical accessories, climate system, noises and leaks, and steering and suspension. Some of the specific issues reported include accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks, and problems passing California Smogging.

In summary, while the 2010 Ford Escape has several innovative high-tech features and impressive crash scores, it is hampered by poor braking performance, lack of mechanical polish and sophistication, and interior comfort and space issues. Additionally, there have been reports of mechanical issues with the engine, paint and trim, exhaust, transmission, electrical accessories, climate system, noises and leaks, and steering and suspension.

Negative 2010 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Russ Glover 2024-11-17

I can see that you have a strong attachment to your 2004 Escape-129K+. It's great to hear that you have had no trouble with it and that it's easy to care for. I understand that you are not a fan of your 2010 model, particularly the interior which is difficult to keep clean. You also mentioned that you liked the running boards on your 2004 model. It's interesting to note that you can feel the wind when driving your 2010 model, which is not the case with your 2004 model. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

  2. Kayley Klocko 2024-09-05

This vehicle does not meet my expectations. The shifting noise is constant and the acceleration is not smooth. I believe that Ford can do better in producing vehicles that meet customer satisfaction.

  3. Kayden Conroy 2024-08-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with you. I recently purchased a used car with 21K miles on it. Unfortunately, two days after the purchase, the check engine light came on. I wasn't sure what to do, but I decided to take it to the dealer on Memorial Day (Leith Ford Wendell, NC). The dealer informed me that I needed new Cylinder Heads and a camshaft, which seems to be a common issue. I was disappointed that this happened at only 21K miles, but luckily it was covered under warranty, so I didn't have to pay anything. The only downside is that it's been 4 days and I still don't have my car back, but the dealership was kind enough to provide me with a loaner. I'll let you know how it goes when I get my car back!

  4. Jean Eichmann 2024-06-08

Overall, the car was okay, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues with it. The materials inside were not of the best quality, and some of the switches failed. Minor problems quickly turned into bigger ones, which was quite frustrating. When I traded in the vehicle in December 2015, I was disappointed with the low trade value. It seemed like there were too many minor things going wrong for a vehicle with only 77,000 miles. Unfortunately, there was a total exhaust system failure, which was a major issue. As a long-time Ford customer of 50 years, I was disappointed to have experienced so many problems with this vehicle.

  5. Declan Herman 2024-05-21

This vehicle is a great fit for cold climates, with its big windows, AWD, fuel efficiency, and cargo space. The winter tires make it a beast in the snow, and it performs well around the city. While the 4-banger engine is a bit slow off the line and when merging into traffic, the V6 would have been a better choice. The gas mileage is decent, but it struggles at interstate speeds and against headwinds due to its small engine and brick shape. Despite some initial issues with an unbalanced drive shaft, the dealer promptly corrected the problem. While there have been some transmission problems, they were all covered under warranty and the vehicle is still chugging away. Overall, this vehicle is a reliable choice for those living in cold climates.

I have a 2010 Ford Escape that I bought used with 60,000 miles. Currently, it has 230,000 miles and it's still running strong. The only problem I ever had was the valve cover gasket, which I fixed myself in about an hour and only cost me around $20. Besides that, I've only done regular maintenance. It's surprisingly good for off-roading and snow, and it has great MPG for an SUV. I highly recommend this vehicle!

I'm so excited about my new SUV! Even though it's 10 years old, I couldn't resist when I saw it on the lot. It looks great, has lots of pep, and plenty of cargo room. Plus, it rides like a car! The matte black paint and chrome wheels really make it stand out. We absolutely love this truck, although the only downside for me is the loud engine noise in the underground parkade. And when you turn off the motor, it sounds like a turbo spooling down. But it's definitely worth it for all the looks we get when driving around town!

I chose the 6 cylinder front-wheel drive, which unfortunately isn't listed on the menu here. I recently switched from my '07 Mercedes GL350 and I must say, I'm impressed with this car. It's peppy, easy to manage, smooth, comfortable, and surprisingly quiet. It's also easy to drive and park. I'm still figuring out the SYNC audio, but it seems pretty cool. However, as a Mac guy, I have my reservations about anything Microsoft. It doesn't seem to be very compatible with my iPod and iPhone yet. I've only had the car for 2 days, but so far, it's been great!

My Escape has never failed me. I bought it 2 years ago with 78k miles and it has needed very minimal work. I love how spacious it is, especially when I’ve moved houses three times. The Escape’s performance on snow and ice exceeded my expectations—it drives very smoothly and maintains great traction.

I am thoroughly enjoying my newly purchased SUV. The driving experience is incredibly smooth and the turning is effortless. The back seats were easily collapsible, providing ample cargo space. Despite the high mileage of almost 149,000 miles, I am confident that this vehicle will continue to provide me with many years of satisfaction. Although I did not achieve the 28 mpg that Ford claims, I remain impressed with this small SUV.
