1992 Ford Aerostar problems

ford logo

The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).

The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.

The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).

For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Common 1992 Ford Aerostar problems

The Ford Aerostar, produced from 1986 to 1997, is known for its spacious interior and versatility. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Engine Leaks Around Rear Crankshaft Seal and Oil Pan Gasket: Engine leaks are a common problem in the Ford Aerostar, particularly around the rear crankshaft seal and oil pan gasket. These leaks can lead to a decrease in engine performance and increased oil consumption.
  • Crossed Oxygen Sensor Wires: Crossed oxygen sensor wires can cause poor idle quality and fuel efficiency issues in the Aerostar. This problem can be difficult to diagnose and requires a mechanic with experience in fuel injection systems.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are a common complaint among Aerostar owners, particularly with the headlights and other dashboard lights. Issues such as flickering lights, blown fuses, and malfunctioning relays can be caused by a variety of factors, including corroded wiring and faulty components.
  • ABS Problems: The ABS system in the Aerostar can experience problems, particularly after brake hose replacement or master cylinder replacement. These issues can cause the red brake light and amber ABS light to come on, indicating a problem with the system.
  • Sliding Door Repair: The sliding doors in the Aerostar can experience problems with the rollers, which can make them difficult to open and close. Replacing the rollers can be a challenging task, as it requires finding the right parts and potentially doing the work yourself.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Ford Aerostar owners. If you own an Aerostar, it's important to stay on top of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of your vehicle.

  • Manufacturer: BRAKE PARTS, INC.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT BRAKE CYLINDERS FOR CERTAIN FORD, DAIMLERCHRYSLER, AND JEEP PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE BRAKE CYLINDERS WERE SOLD UNDER THE BRAND NAMES OF NAPA, RAYBESTOS, AIMCO, AC DELCO, CARQUEST, BENDIX, AND WAGNER. ONLY PRODUCTS THAT WERE MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 27, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 17, 2006 (DATE CODES 0529 THROUGH 0602) ARE SUBJECT TO THIS RECALL. WHEN SUBJECT TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES, AN INTERNAL SEAL IN THE MASTER CYLINDER COULD LOSE FLEXIBILITY AND MAY CAUSE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK.
  • Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID CAN LEAD TO A DECREASE IN BRAKE LINE PRESSURE AND AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: AFFINIA (BRAKE PARTS, INC.) WILL REPLACE THE SUBJECT BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 20, 2006. OWNERS CAN CONTACT AFFINA GROUP CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-323-0354.

THE POWERTRAIN BENDING RESONANCE OR THE OUTPUT SHAFT BUSHING DISPLACEMENT CAN RESULT IN STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND/OR TRANSFER CASE. FLUID EXPLUSION, DRIVESHAFT SEPARATION OR LOSS OF VEHICLE DRIVE CAN RESULT.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, AND, IF THE EXPELLED FLUID CONTACTS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, A VEHICLE FIRE COULD OCCUR.

Negative 1992 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Carleton Jones 2024-11-07

This van is perfect for families! It has a great radio and pretty good pick up for a van. Plus, it's super reliable!

  2. Barton Leffler 2024-03-06

I drive this van to school every day and while it has some flaws, it gets me where I need to go. In winter, the gas mileage can drop to as low as 7 mpg, which can be frustrating. The exterior design could use some improvement, but the interior is quite nice. It could benefit from more power, especially when driving on inclines, but overall it gets the job done. Unfortunately, it doesn't heat up very well and the traction in snow is not great, but with some caution, it's manageable.

Positive 1992 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Griffin Medhurst 2024-10-24

I've only had my vehicle for a couple of years, but I've already put 60,000 miles on it, bringing the total mileage to 311,000 miles. It has provided me with great service and I wish they still made them. I'm currently looking for a (99) model, but after reading reviews of the Windstars, I'm a bit scared of them.

  2. Chad Heller 2024-10-12

185,000 miles and still going strong! You've only needed to replace the brakes, tires, muffler, and alternator. It's a shame they don't make them like this anymore!

  3. Ezra Flatley 2024-09-16

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing van I bought. It had 170,000 miles on it when I got it, and I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about how long it would last. But guess what? I've driven it for another 33,000 miles since then and it's still going strong! It's been such a reliable and easy ride. :)

  4. Gerson Dicki 2024-08-26

You'll love this vehicle - it's a 4x4 that can blast through anything and has plenty of cargo capacity. Whatever you need to take home, this Ford can handle it. Thanks for considering it!

  5. Oliver Morar 2024-06-17

This is my 4th vehicle and the only van I have owned. I traded my '86 Somerset for it when I was a boy scout leader. At the time, I had to take 3 10-year-olds home in the Somerset and the poor car's underbelly was almost dragging on the street. After 3 years, it was time to trade up to a nice passenger van. I upgraded to a 1991 AreoStar Standard length with fold-down rear seats that almost turned into a full-size bed. It got a lot of use during the scouts' camping trips.👍🏼
