2004 Dodge Sprinter problems

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2004 Dodge Sprinter problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2004 Dodge Sprinter, here are some common problems to look out for:

  • Glow Plug Failures: Glow plugs can seize into the cylinder head, making replacement a significant repair. The Engine Control Module monitors glow plugs and can issue fault codes, but these codes are not always accurate indicators for replacement.
  • Harmonic Balancer Issues: Common in 2001-2005 models, symptoms include rough engine running, vibrations at different RPMs, damaged sensors, and leaking crankshaft seals. Identifying this issue accurately can be challenging.
  • Drive Shafts and Universals: Problems with these components can be costly to fix compared to domestic vans, so it's crucial to have them checked by a mechanic.
  • Turbo Resonator Failure: Particularly on 2004-2006 Sprinter RV conversions, plastic turbo resonators are prone to failure. Replacing them with aluminum alternatives is recommended.
  • Transmission Issues: NAG1 automatic transmissions in NAFTA T1N Sprinters can produce a "rumble strip" noise, which may indicate incorrect transmission fluids or the need for a fluid change.
  • Heater Fan Problems: If the heater fan only works on high speed, the heater resistor may have failed. Replacing the resistor is a relatively simple and affordable fix.
  • Wiring Harness Wear: Wiring harnesses in some T1N Sprinters can wear through insulation, leading to engine power loss or electrical issues. Regular inspection is essential to prevent problems.
  • EGR Valve Concerns: A black oily film near the engine's driver's side could indicate issues with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. While this may not be catastrophic, replacing the EGR valve every 70,000 miles is recommended.
  • A/C Issues: Older T1N Sprinters may experience a lack of cold air from the A/C due to condenser holes. Checking and replacing the condenser is crucial for proper cooling.
  • Remote Door Locks: Ensuring all remote door locks are functioning correctly is important. Cleaning the door contact units can often resolve any issues with the locks.

These common problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and regular maintenance to keep a 2004 Dodge Sprinter running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

BUT LATELY IS REAPPEARING MORE FREQUENTLY. NO ACCIDENT YET. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY BY NOW 66,000 MILES. POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-10
  • VIN: WD5PD644045
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: IN MAY OF 2005 I PURCHASED A NEW DODGE (MERCEDES BENZ) SPRINTER 2500 PASSENGER VAN. WITHIN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS AND 7,500 MILES OF DATE OF PURCHASE THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHOW SIGNS OF PREMATURE RUSTING AND LEAKAGE OVER THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. I PURSUED REMEDY THRU ALL AUTHORIZED SPRINTER DEALERSHIPS ADHERING TO CHRYSLER PROTOCOLS AND RECOMMENDATIONS. NO REMEDY WAS EVER FORTHCOMING, I REPEATEDLY AND CONTINUE TO CHALLENGE CHRYSLER, THEIR REFUSAL TO PROVIDE WARRANTY SERVICE FOR THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE OWED THIS VEHICLE IS DOCUMENTED AND TOO EXTENSIVE TO PROVIDE HERE. I HAVE FILED BBB COMPLAINTS IN DENVER CO. I HAVE SPOKEN TO EXECUTIVE LEVEL CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS. AND NONE HAVE OFFERED A VIABLE SOLUTION. THEY HAVE ESSENTIALLY WASHED THEIR HANDS OF A PROBLEM THAT I HAVE BEEN PURSUING FOR 4 YEARS. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS ISSUE TO THE ATTENTION OF SO MANY CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE THAT THEY NOW AVOID MY EMAILS AND INQUIRIES. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A RECALL ISSUE AS I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS REFERENCES ON THE NET TO SIMILAR ISSUES. THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ALL SHOW SIGN OF PREMATURE RUST ,LEAKAGE OF ROOF SEAMS AND RUST PENETRATION AROUND THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. I HAVE SOUGHT REPAIRS WELL WITHIN THE RUST THRU WARRANTY PERIOD AND HAVE MET WITH NOTHING BUT LIP SERVICE. CHRYSLER REFUSES TO ADDRESS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND HAS DELAYED OFFERING A REMEDY UNTIL NOW THE WARRANTY PERIOD HAS EXPIRED. I CAN PROVIDE EXPLICIT WORK ORDERS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE REF NO, WITHIN CHRYSLERS SYSTEM. I AM NOW CONSIDERING PURSUING LEGAL OPTIONS BUT LITTLE RESOLUTION IS AVAILABLE. BODY SHOPS REFUSE TO PERFORM REPAIR WORK BECAUSE THEY UNIVERSALLY STATE THAT RUST IS A NONFIXABLE ISSUE. ON ONLY ONE OCCASION DID CHRYSLER AUTHORIZE A SUPERFICIAL ATTEMPT TO PAINT OVER PROBLEM, THEY THEN REFUSED TO HONOR THEIR RUST THRU PERFORATION WARRANTY WHEN THE PROBLEM RESURFACED WITH 35,000 MILES. I AM NOW LEFT WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS RUSTING EXTENSIVELY IN AREAS WHERE I ORIGINALLY DOCUMENTED THE PROBLEM. *TR

  • VIN: WD2PD644145
  • Components: WHEELS

I NOTICED A NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEEL AND TOOK IT TO A SHOP WHERE THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG BECAUSE THE CRACKS IN THE WHEEL ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO DETECT UNLESS INSPECTED VERY CLOSELY. THE WHEEL THAT FAILED WAS NEVER ABUSED OR MISTREATED IN ANY WAY PRIOR TO FAILURE. I STILL HAVE THE BROKEN WHEEL IF YOU WISH TO INSPECT IT. I AM NOW RUNNING ON THE SPARE. SHOULD I REPLACE ALL 4 WHEELS ON THIS VAN? WILL THE OTHERS ALSO FAIL? ARE ALL 2004 SPRINTER WHEELS THIS DANGEROUS? *TR

Negative 2004 Dodge Sprinter car reviews

  1. Carlo Marks 2024-09-28

The vehicle has had several issues, including transmission leaks, transponder issues, turn signal issues, engine trouble lights, surface rust, AC pulley falling off, O2 sensor failures, and more. Despite the challenges, I have been able to address them by driving to the nearest Dodge dealership, which is located halfway across the state. Although some of these issues have not been covered under warranty, I have been fortunate enough to have an extended warranty that has helped me cover the costs. While I have come across similar issues on online forums, I have found that the dealership has been able to address them effectively.

    This car is great!

  3. Otis Douglas 2024-04-08

I purchased a 2004 Dodge Sprinter brand new in 2006 with only 500 miles on it. Unfortunately, this vehicle has been quite unreliable and has required frequent repairs. I have had to replace the front AC unit condenser, two alternators, the driveshaft carrier bearing, and the driveshaft itself. There is also a vibration in the driveline that I have not been able to locate, and now there is a noise coming from the rear end or wheel bearing. Despite having driven it for 130K miles, I am disappointed that I have not been able to reach my goal of 250K miles due to the high maintenance costs. Interestingly, I heard that UPS crushed their Sprinters at 120K miles due to maintenance and downtime.

Positive 2004 Dodge Sprinter car reviews

  1. Lavern Conroy 2024-11-24

This van is amazing! It's the nicest one I've ever owned. I've had 4 conversion vans before, but this plain passenger van is the best. It's so comfortable for long distance trips, and the mileage is great at 21-22. It's also super dependable and durable. Although there was a slight issue with the paint job, I've talked to other Sprinter owners and it seems to be an exception. Just a heads up, the '07s don't get the best mpg's, only about 16.

  2. Arden Zulauf 2024-11-17

Not only is this a great van for my construction business, but it's also a fantastic advertising tool since I'm the only one in my market with one! It's been working flawlessly so far and with 23+ MPG, it's much more cost-effective than a pickup truck outfitted for tools. I've turned it into my 'advervan' and business has picked up even in this down economy.

I picked up the vehicle in Arkansas and drove it all the way home to NC. The Sprinter was just too inviting to cruise at 82MPH (the preset limit). With a new engine, I was able to average about 20-21MPG and I expect that to increase with seasoning. My family absolutely loves it! It's big enough to fit all the kids, their friends, strollers, and more, making all the soccer moms drool. You can easily spot the Sprinter anywhere, be it in parking lots, on the highway, in a field of SUVs, or on city streets. If you're planning to buy one for non-commercial use, be prepared to answer many questions from inquiring minds. But don't worry, the questions are a whole lot better than rants and protests you'd get if this were a gas-guzzling SUV of equal proportion. It's perfect for biodiesel after the warranty expires.

The Sprinter is a joy to drive, comfortable, and incredibly versatile. As someone who travels across the US at least four times a year for business, I can attest to its reliability and handling both on the freeway and in town. Despite its appearance, the Sprinter is not top-heavy and can handle heavy loads with ease. Whether I'm transporting friends, family, or luggage, the Sprinter lives up to its name. However, when I do occasionally load it up with building supplies and concrete sacks, I have noticed a slight decrease in power.

Not much experience yet, but the more I drive it, the more I like it. It's a big van with enough power and the economy of a small sedan.
