2003 Pontiac Montana problems
The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was sold by General Motors under the Pontiac brand for model years 1997 to 2009. Its badge-engineered variants were the Chevrolet Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette in the first generation, and the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Buick Terraza in the second generation. Prior to the 1997 model year, it was known as the Pontiac Trans Sport.
In 1996 for the 1997 model year, the Trans Sport added the Montana moniker as part of an available trim package. This package proved so popular the line was renamed Montana in 1998 for the 1999 model year in the United States and 1999 for the 2000 model year in Canada. When the van was redesigned in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the name was changed to Montana SV6. It was discontinued after the 2006 model year in the United States because of slow sales, but continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until 2009. Since their introduction, the Pontiac minivans were GM's most popular minivans among consumers in Canada.
The Doraville, Georgia assembly plant which produced the Montana and its siblings closed on September 26, 2008. Sales of the Montana SV6 continued for Canada and Mexico until 2009, a year before the Pontiac brand was discontinued in 2010.

Common 2003 Pontiac Montana problems
The 2003 Pontiac Montana has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the intake manifold gasket, erratic shifting, leaking refrigerant, and blown head gaskets.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Failure: The intake manifold gasket in the 2003 Pontiac Montana may fail, causing oil or coolant to leak. This leak is usually internal and isn't always visible from the outside. The oil and coolant might mix due to gasket failure, which can lead to engine damage. Some owners were able to detect the problem when the low coolant light illuminated on their dashboard, while others experienced overheating issues. Replacing the lower intake manifold gasket should fix this problem for most owners. However, there are a few unlucky owners whose engines were damaged as a result of the coolant and oil mixing, leading to expensive engine repairs.
- Erratic Shifting: The 1999 to 2006 Pontiac Montana models are known to have issues with erratic shifting, caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid. This solenoid controls fluid pressure to the clutch’s friction plate. The failed pressure control solenoids result in rough and delayed shifts and cause the transmission to make grinding or whining sounds. Replacing the faulty pressure control solenoid involves disassembling the transmission, which is costly and labor-intensive.
- Leaking Refrigerant: Several Montana owners have reported that their air-conditioning stopped working due to leaking refrigerant in the minivan’s system.
- Blown Head Gaskets: There are no known recalls or common issues regarding blown head gaskets for a Pontiac Montana 2003, V6/3.4. However, if the vehicle has been overheated for any reason, it could lead to head gasket problems due to a recent or prior overheating episode. A class action suit against GM covered the 3.4L engine, but the last date to submit the claim was October 2008.
These common problems with the 2003 Pontiac Montana can lead to costly repairs if not addressed promptly. Owners should have their vehicles checked immediately as soon as the first symptoms of these issues emerge to prevent further damage and expensive repairs.

This is a lovely family van. The DVD player is fantastic for the kids, especially on longer journeys. We have the cordless headsets, so we can listen to the radio while they watch the movie. The dual sliding doors are essential.

Congratulations on expanding your family! We understand the need for a reliable and spacious vehicle that can accommodate your loved ones, including your furry friends. The Montana caught your eye with its stylish design, and as a previous owner of a Bonneville with 200,000 miles, you knew that Pontiacs are built to last. The leather interior and DVD system add a touch of luxury to your driving experience, making it even more enjoyable. I purchased the vehicle brand new in December 2003 from Conkle Pontiac. Despite having problems with the interior features from the very beginning, the dealership has never been able to fix them and is now refusing to work on it. The windshield leaked, damaging the headliner, and in the first month of ownership, the van was in the shop for 20 days. Additionally, my audio controls and all my interior lights are hanging down, the windows do not operate properly, and there is a loud popping noise that persists. To make matters worse, my engine has developed a knock. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Great deal! When you factor in both the Montana Vision and regular factory rebates, you can walk away with the MV FWD for less than $21K after GM card maximum credit allowance. Although the overall build is less than desirable - I have had door handle, rattle and lug cap problems in the first month plus horrible warranty service from a local Pontiac dealership - I still couldn't pass up the overall low price when compared to the Odyssey.

I had some issues with my Montana mini-van that required repairs. At 36,700 miles, I had to replace the manifold intake gasket, which cost around $1,000. It was a bit of a challenge to get GM to cover the cost, but they eventually did. At 37,400 miles, I had to replace a head gasket, which was an expensive repair. However, GM automatically covered the cost, which was a relief. Although I was hoping to keep the van for many years, I am now considering trading it in for a Toyota or Honda. I hope my experience can help you make an informed decision when purchasing a vehicle. Thank you for considering my experience.

I noticed that there are several complaints about the intake manifold, and unfortunately, mine is also not functioning properly. I would advise against purchasing any GM vehicles. In fact, my family and I are considering purchasing a Honda Odyssey instead.

Here's an example of why GM is having trouble selling cars without steep discounts -- it's a real disappointment. Unfortunately, this car needed a new manifold gasket at only 40,000 miles, and the trim is falling apart. Additionally, one of the windows won't close and the power window grinds. It's been a frustrating experience.
