The Dodge Caliber is a compact hatchback manufactured and marketed by Chrysler's Dodge division from the 2007 through 2012 model years, replacing the Dodge Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Following the Caliber concept, which debuted at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the pre-production version debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, with a market launch in March 2006.

The Caliber was manufactured at the Belvidere Assembly (Illinois) plant, and across its six-year model run, just over 400,000 were produced.

Common 2007 Dodge Caliber problems

The 2007 Dodge Caliber has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine, suspension, and electrical systems.

One of the most frequently reported issues is engine problems that cause the vehicle to randomly slow down, stall, idle, or shut off. This can be caused by various factors, including a dirty or clogged fuel injector, a failed catalytic converter, or a faulty fuel system. A thorough cleaning of the fuel injector may solve the problem, but if the catalytic converter or fuel system is at fault, more extensive repairs may be necessary.

Another common problem with the 2007 Dodge Caliber is suspension issues, which are often caused by faulty ball joints and control arms. These problems can lead to unexpected shutdowns in traffic, which can be dangerous and potentially lead to accidents.

In addition to these issues, the 2007 Dodge Caliber has also been known to have problems with its electrical systems, including tail lights going out and requiring expensive repairs.

The engine and transmission of the 2007 Dodge Caliber are generally well-built, but they are prone to premature corrosion, which can lead to expensive repairs or even the need for replacement.

The 2007 Dodge Caliber has also been known to have problems with its powertrain, with 65 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The shared theme among these categories is excessive corrosion throughout the vehicle, which can lead to premature failure of various components.

Despite these issues, the 2007 Dodge Caliber has a high reliability rating of 4 out of 5 from RepairPal.com, indicating that it is generally a reliable vehicle. However, the high frequency of repairs and maintenance required can be a turn-off for budget-conscious buyers.

In summary, the 2007 Dodge Caliber has several common problems, primarily related to its engine, suspension, and electrical systems. While the vehicle has a high reliability rating, the high frequency of repairs and maintenance required, as well as the potential for expensive repairs due to corrosion, should be taken into consideration when purchasing or owning one of these vehicles.

Why did the Dodge Caliber fail?

In a nutshell, it was poor sales. The Caliber didn't have any strong attributes and didn't compete well. Also, the majority of the industry was producing mostly SUV's, and the Caliber was in an odd position, between a compact FWD compact with a type of crossover back end. There was simply no market for it.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
  • VIN: 1B3HB78K67D
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The window regulators of this car (& other vehicles of the same model) is a poor product of productivity. The cable wires that hold the window to guide the window up & down are known to & have become tangled up around the component that is said to properly wrap up the guided cable wires in the correct placement for the windows to continue to be able to roll up & down as intended. It's not just one door, it is literally every single door in this vehicle that has this issue. When I decided to try & save a little bit of money & get some used window regulators, I go to a salvage yard that had another dodge caliber (different model, how ever, same window regulators) just to find upon inspection, that every single door has a spoon in between the window & the rubber guard piece. Took the door panel off to further inspect & that vehicle had the same issue I have at this very moment... Cable wires completely tangled up and completely non salvageable. Removed the spoon & the window fell down. Now I understand that it doesn't sound like a safety issue but when you are driving down the highway, doing the speed limit, and your window falls down, it's very startling and honestly a distraction while driving. Not only is that a distraction but have you ever had a bird fly into your car, from the hole that was once a window? Talk about a distraction. It's like a bee flying into your helmet while riding a motorcycle or 4wheeler. Ah! Main focus is that flying object to come out, so you try to roll down the other windows only to remember after pushing the buttons that, oh wait, they won't roll down. Ever since the window fell, Not only is that a safety issue for the ones in my car, now it's a safety issue for those driving onside of me till I can get onto the shoulder, if there is one. And hopefully the weather is nice Yes, it has been confirmed & inspected by an independent service center, & yes it is available for inspection upon request. No warning lamps.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1B3HB48B67D
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: My car was slow to accelerate, and sounded like the engine was over-revving. The engine stalled several times, and the car itself was shaking, while driving at a moderate speed level, which I feared would have caused an accident, because it was sudden. The service warning light appeared. I had the manifold replaced by one mechanic, but the problem occurred again. I got a second opinion, that determined it was the throttle body assembly, which was replaced. That was three years ago. Now, the same issue has cropped up again. The cost was exorbitant, and is something I can't afford every few years.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-22
  • VIN: 1B3HB48B97D
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I had brought my 2003 Stratus and 2007 Caliber in to the dealership for their 3000 mile oil change and check-up. When the Stratus was done, I switched it out with the Caliber. The receptionist came into the waiting room to inform me that my vehicle was dangerous to drive. The engine cradle had rotted out. The manager had asked her to tell me: "If you hit a big bump, your engine could fall out." She showed me a picture of the area in question. I asked what I was supposed to be looking for and was shown where the cradle was supposed to be. A post-it note was on the picture saying that the manager "will do some pricing". The invoice states: "We question the structural integrity of it being able to hold up much longer." When I did not hear anything for a few weeks, I called in and was told that it had not been done but the manager would get right on it. I had asked the manager how this could have been missed during all the years I had been bringing it in for any kind of maintenance and was told: "It probably looks worse that what it should because I poked it with a screwdriver a few times to see how bad it was." Invoice total: $1884.20. I have since spoken with a general manager for Magna Corporation who produced the cradle for the Caliber. They were aware of the design flaw of the cradle that did not allow for drainage of water/road chemicals from the cradle. A lawsuit was filed by Magna against Dodge which Magna won. The particulars of the lawsuit were not made known to me other than Magna charges $42 for the cradle, but I was billed $859. I have found numerous customer complaints online over the corrosion of the cradle in other Dodge model years as well. The 2007 Caliber seems to have more overall customer complaints that all othe model years combined.

Negative 2007 Dodge Caliber car reviews

  1. Myron Murphy 2024-11-07

I purchased my car 6 months ago with 68K miles on it. During the first week, I noticed a whining noise coming from the front end. I took it to the dealership and insisted that they fix it. They replaced the passenger side wheel bearing at no cost. In week 7, the airbag light came on, so I took it to a different shop where they informed me that a sensor had gone out. The cost to fix it was $323.00. By week 11, I noticed a grinding noise coming from the front end on the driver's side. I took it back to the shop and they informed me that the ball joint had gone out, which is apparently connected to the tie rod end as one piece. This issue was causing my tires to wear badly on the inside. While the car was in the shop, I also had the battery replaced. The total cost for these repairs was $968.00. Unfortunately, just 6 months after purchasing the car, the alternator died and I was stranded. The cost to tow and repair the car was $548.00. If you are not in need of a car, I would not recommend this one!

  2. Jake Marvin 2024-09-09

I purchased my 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT (automatic) with 94,000 miles on it in February 2014. Unfortunately, right after I drove it off the lot, the check engine light came on. However, the dealership was very helpful and replaced the fuel sensor free of charge. At 97,000 miles, I experienced some issues with the car jolting and sputtering, and the check engine light blinking. I had to call a tow truck and have it taken to a dealership, where they replaced 4 coils, all my spark plugs, and also did an oil change (which was just about needed anyway). Unfortunately, two weeks later, my family and I were driving only an hour away from home when the same issue occurred again. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this car.

  3. Bennett Boyer 2024-06-29

Our Caliber has undergone multiple repairs in the last 2 1/2 months. We have experienced a persistent and disruptive pinging noise that increases in volume when waiting in line or driving at slow speeds. Additionally, we have identified issues with the front passenger door not fitting flush with the frame, a protruding headlight, multiple gaps, a malfunctioning ice cooler, and a seatbelt clasp that produces a clicking noise while driving.

  4. Fred Cummings 2024-06-16

I expertly replaced the tie rod and ball joints, as well as installing a new alternator and battery. Despite the car's high mileage of 102k, I was able to restore it to excellent condition. However, based on my experience, I cannot recommend the Dodge Caliber to anyone as it has proven to be a money pit car.

Wow, it's been quite a journey with my Caliber! Although I've had some challenges with it, I've learned a lot about car maintenance. I've had to replace the engine supports, alternator (twice), battery (three times), tires (all four), and compressor (twice). I've also had some minor issues that were easily fixed. I've been told that the sound system I have in the car may have contributed to some of these issues, but I'm still grateful for the gift from my parents. Despite being left stranded on the road twice, I'm still hopeful that my Caliber will serve me well in the future.

I have had this car for three years now and I absolutely love it! The design is innovative and comfortable, and it drives great. I have never had any mechanical problems with it. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone!

I'm so glad to hear that you, your sister, and your friend all have a Caliber! Your 2007 R/T without AWD sounds like a fantastic car, and I'm happy to hear that you've had no major issues with it over the past three years. Even though the alternator is starting to go after 7 years of wear and tear, it's great to hear that the car still runs like a car and feels more like an SUV. The Caliber is known for its dependability, which is something we all love about Chrysler Group at one time or another. The R/T has enough power to make driving fun, and they handle well with a great turning radius. With window guards, the window noise when open at high speeds is practically gone. It's impressive that you bought yours with 99,000 miles and it now has 128,000 miles. Overall, it sounds like a great car and I would definitely consider buying one myself!

We got our caliber in March 2014, when we got it, it had a problem. Behind the driver seat there is a water leak on the floor each time it rains, in the other hand, the caliber is very spacious and comfortable, the floor on the cargo area is nice because it is made of plastic, so in case of like a spill, you can easily wipe it of. The seats are very comfortable, especially when it is cold and you turn on the heated seats. Legroom is nice too. The car is fun to drive, because of the engine on the R/T (2.4L I4)

This is a great vehicle! The spacious interior is perfect for us parents, while the sporty exterior is great for cruising. The fuel economy is unbeatable, I'm getting nearly 35 miles to the gallon on the highway, which is always a plus when you're on a tight budget. It handles better than I would have suspected.
