Dodge Caliber problems

The Dodge Caliber is a compact hatchback manufactured and marketed by Chrysler's Dodge division from the 2007 through 2012 model years, replacing the Dodge Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Following the Caliber concept, which debuted at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the pre-production version debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, with a market launch in March 2006.

The Caliber was manufactured at the Belvidere Assembly (Illinois) plant, and across its six-year model run, just over 400,000 were produced.

Latest negative Dodge Caliber car reviews

  1. Rickey Littel 2025-08-03

    Vehicle year: 2009

Although we haven't had it for long, I'm disappointed with the gas mileage of the car. It only gets 20-25 mpg, which is lower than expected. Initially, we thought the gas handle was broken, and the company promised to fix it within 3 months. However, when we followed up, they said it would take another 3 months. Additionally, the car struggles to move in snow, and I even got stuck in my driveway. In comparison, my Buick had no issues. Unfortunately, the car has already broken down with only 6252 miles on it. If you were to ask me whether you should buy this car, I would suggest considering other options.

  2. Wilmer Monahan 2025-07-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

The ownership experience was unfortunately limited to only one hour. Despite ordering the car correctly, Dodge failed to manufacture the car to the expected standard by leaving out one of the three options. This raises concerns about the quality control process. During the initial test drive, the car overheated in less than five miles. After listening to the salesman and manager's attempts to explain the situation, we decided to take our deposit back and leave.

I purchased a new caliber on Sunday, but unfortunately it broke down on the first Thursday. After having it towed to the dealer, they informed me that it was a battery issue. They charged the battery and returned the car to me on Friday, but to my dismay, the car died again when I drove it to the store on Monday. I took it back to the dealer, but they were unable to find any issues. Despite this, I remain confident that the issue will be resolved and I will be able to enjoy my new car soon.

  4. Pedro Wiegand 2025-07-08

    Vehicle year: 2010

I am the second owner of my Caliber. It currently has 136k~ miles on it. The car is quite roomy and I love the exterior design. Although the interior is nice, the design hasn't aged well and there is a lot of plastic. Unfortunately, there are no soft touch materials except for the headliner and seats. The suspension could be better, as I have had to replace lower control arms, ball joints, and other parts. However, I am lucky to have purchased a great warranty. On the highway, the car drives great, it is smooth and quiet. City driving is okay, but I am not a fan of the CVT, especially in the city. It feels like it takes forever to get up and go, but I understand that this is expected for a larger car. The paint is still pretty good, although it shows every flaw since I have black. Overall, I have enjoyed owning this car and appreciate its spaciousness and exterior design.

  5. Levi Dickens 2025-07-07

The Dodge Caliber Heat is a great car with excellent handling and fantastic brakes. Although it lacks power, it is comfortable to ride and has a nice suspension. Despite some wind noise, the car is still a great choice. The dealer has had to reattach shielding inside both front wheel wells three times, but this is a minor issue. In terms of mileage, my CVT transmission and 2.0 motor are not performing as well as I had hoped. Despite driving mostly on the highway, my Dodge Caliber Heat is only averaging 21 MPG. However, I am confident that with some adjustments, this car can perform even better.

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I've had it since it was brand new and it's been amazing! I've driven it for 66000 miles and it hasn't needed any repairs at all. The ride is comfortable and smooth, and it gets great mileage. I typically get around 30-31 mpg, which is fantastic. The only thing to keep in mind is that it has a smaller engine (2.0L), so it works a bit harder to maintain higher speeds. But as long as you keep up with the maintenance, it'll last you a long time. The cabin is a bit small, but I've managed to fit two toddler car seats in the back seat. The cargo space can be a bit limited, especially if you have a big stroller, but it definitely gets the job done! Let me know if you have any questions.

  2. Frederic Kirlin 2025-07-29

    Vehicle year: 2008

When I was originally shopping for a wagon style vehicle, I considered a Toyota Matrix. However, due to some issues with Toyota and its affiliated vehicles, I decided to explore other options. That's when I discovered the Dodge Caliber. I researched and test drove the model I eventually purchased. I bought my Caliber in 2010 (it's a 2008 model) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Since then, I have driven it all around New Hampshire (from the seacoast to as far inland as Manchester), Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. I even drove it all the way down to Houston, Texas when I relocated from the northeast to Texas. During my four years in Texas, I drove it back and forth to San Antonio regularly (at least twice a month) and to Louisiana about once a month. I also drove to Oklahoma. In 2015, I relocated to Missouri and have since driven the Caliber to various Oklahoma casinos about once a quarter, to Springfield about twice a month, and to Fayeteville, Arkansas a couple of times. The only major engine repairs I've had to make were the intake manifold, which was seized open, and the muffler, which needed to be replaced. Additionally, the only major suspension work that needed to be done was a front-end tie-rod. Other than that, regular oil changes, tire rotations, and maintenance have kept it running like a champ. So much so, that I was in a near head-on collision a couple of days ago and was able to walk away (although I was carted off in an ambulance). Overall, I can confidently say that it is the best vehicle I have ever purchased! I highly recommend it to anyone!

  3. Dewitt Renner 2025-07-15

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've owned my Caliber for a year now and my husband and I have been very pleased with it. After driving a Chevy Venture for 10 years, I was really excited to have something sportier and I have not been disappointed. This car is fun to drive and it looks great. I still get a lot of compliments on it. The controls are easy to use, it handles well and has been completely reliable.

  4. Colton Gleichner 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2008

This car wasn't my first choice, but at the time I was still in college and my dad pretty much decided for me. However, I'm so glad we went with the Caliber! Although it lacks many of the bells and whistles of a more expensive car/brand, it has been so good to me. My major repairs have been few and far between (and by major I mean nothing totalling over $300). This car is 7 years old and is still going like a champ! I'm constantly surprised by how well it's held up over all this time considering it doesn't have the best reputation. In my opinion, the pros are that the cruise control is an awesome plus, it hasn't required many major repairs, it's not a very noisy car, and the sound system is pretty good too. My favorite thing about this car is the storage. All the back seats fold forward and I've been amazed at what I've been able to fit in this car! It's only proven to me that I want to continue buying hatchbacks if I can. The only couple of things I would say are that the acceleration is lackluster, it feels light enough to fly off the road if I'm going too fast (road holding?), and it doesn't do all that well in snow (totally fine in rain, though). However, overall I'm extremely happy with this purchase, especially for the money we paid. I might sell it this year but that's only because I'd like to get at least a little money for it! But if money weren't an issue, I'd continue to drive it until it died.

  5. Jorge Tromp 2025-07-09

    Vehicle year: 2009

Lee Iacocca once said, 'if you can find a better car - buy it'. In my experience, this car is one of the best for day-to-day driving. It has everything you need and even some extras. Compared to the Ford Escort wagon that I traded in for the Caliber, this car has it all. As a design engineer with many years of experience, I can confidently say that this car is a good, solid machine with no serious design flaws. It will last for many years with very few problems in daily driving (and no, I don't work for an auto company!). What's more, this is the first 'small' car I've seen with midsize car seating room and comfort.
