1993 Nissan Altima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-09-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1N4BU31F9PC
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: 1993 NISSAN ALTIMA WAS STRUCK WHILE PARKED. BODY SHOP & INSURANCE ESTIMATOR INDICATE VEHICLE THAT HIT THE PARKED ALTIMA WAS TRAVELING FASTER THAN 35 MPH. THE PASSIVE RESTRAINTS (SEATBELTS) FAILED TO LOCK IN PLACE, AND THE DRIVER-SIDE AIRBAG WAS NOT DEPLOYED. THE ALTIMA WAS STRUCK IN THE REAR, DRIVER-SIDE QUARTER PANEL/BUMPER - AREA SURROUNDING FUEL CAP. ODDLY ENOUGH, AFTER THE BODY WORK WAS COMPLETED, THE MERCURY SWITCH THAT IS DESIGNED TO LOCK THE PASSIVE RESTRAINTS IN PLACE DURING A CRASH HAD BEEN TRIPPED AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT BY THE DEALER. WHEN THE PASSIVE RESTRAINT SENSOR WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER UPON PICKING UP THE ALTIMA I NOTICED A RED AIRBAG LIGHT SOLIDLY ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. WHEN I QUESTIONED THE DEALER ABOUT THIS CONDITION THAT DID NOT EXIST PRIOR TO THEIR REPLACEMENT OF THE PASSIVE RESTRAINT SENSOR IN THE TRUNK, THEY INVESTIGATED. THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE THE LIGHT GO OFF, BUT INDICATED THAT THE "AIRBAG CONTROLLER CARD (ACC)" ESSENTIALLY A CIRCUIT BOARD WAS FAULTY - OR WOULD WORK INTERMITTENTLY UNLESS I REPLACED IT. THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP EXPLAINED THAT THE REASON IT WORKED INTERMITTENTLY WAS BECAUSE THE "ACC" WAS NOT SEALED AND AS A RESULT WAS PRONE TO TOTAL FAILURE ON A VERY HOT OR COLD DAY. THE MANAGER INDICATED FURTHER THAT WHEN HE HAD BEEN A MECHANIC HE HAD SEEN MANY ALTIMA'S, SENTRA'S AND A FEW OTHER MODELS THAT USED THE SAME VERSION "ACC" AND THAT NISSAN HAD BEEN REPLACING THEM ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. HOWEVER, THEY CHOSE TO TELL ME THAT "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE, AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY OR EVEN OUTSIDE WARRANTY DESPITE IT BEING A SAFETY ISSUE. NISSAN INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THIS PART, AND THEY HAD NO RECORD OF THIS PART HAVING A HISTORY OF FAILURE. I DON'T WANT TO FIND OUT IF MY AIRBAG IS GOING TO WORK OR NOT THE HARD WAY.*AK

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience with your 1993 Nissan Altima, despite its age! It sounds like it was a reliable car that could handle all kinds of weather and terrain. It's impressive that it performed so well as a 2 wheel drive car. I agree that the first generation of this model is one of the best ones built by Nissan.

  3. Agustin Armstrong 2024-06-11

This car may have some exterior and interior rattles and lackluster acceleration, but it has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Additionally, it has been very inexpensive to maintain and still averages around 27 miles per gallon, which is not bad at all considering it has 210,000 miles!

  4. Elroy Donnelly 2024-06-05

I purchased this car in 1999 with 80,000 km and have driven it for 122,000 km. While I have invested a lot of money into the car, including over a grand to fix the manual transmission, I have found the car to have good performance and pick up nicely. However, the fuel economy is not great, as I only get an average of 360 km per tank. I have had to replace the alternator and starter twice. Overall, I would recommend avoiding the 1993 model year and opting for a 95 or newer model. Hope this helps!

Positive 1993 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. Terrence Tremblay 2025-01-06

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Nissan Altima. I bought it used back in August 2015 with 126,000 miles on it, and today it has 224,000 miles! Despite the high mileage, the engine still runs quite well. Over time, I've had to replace some typical old car parts like the AC compressor, starter, and alternator, but I've never had to service the timing chain or head gasket. It only consumes a quart of oil between 3000 mile interval oil changes using High Mileage conventional 5W30, which is really impressive. Recently, I took it on a 600 mile trip and had no issues whatsoever. I do want to mention that valve cover gaskets tend to leak and the stock suspension components are garbage, but overall, if you're looking for a very reliable older Nissan, you can't go wrong with the first gen Altimas (93-97 model year). Thanks for reading!

  2. Joey Kuphal 2025-01-04

Your Nissan Altima has been very reliable over the past 9 years. I had a Sentra GXE before and my husband has a Frontier crew cab. Like all other vehicles, it does need regular checks, tune ups, tire rotation/changes, oil changes, etc. The only issue I have had is with the seat belt; it tends to tighten up regularly and trap you in the seat. In such circumstances, only the emergency release helps. Overall, I rate Nissans very highly.

  3. Vaughn Rath 2024-11-18

I've been driving my 1993 Altima for almost a decade now, and it's been a great ride. Although I recently purchased a new car and had to say goodbye to my Altima, I have nothing but positive things to say about it. It was a reliable and enjoyable car to drive, and only had a couple of minor issues (alternator) that left me stranded. While the service department wasn't the best, I still recommend taking your car to Nissan for service, as they always make things right. Even though my Altima had over 115,000 miles on it and looked a bit worn out, it still ran perfectly and everything still worked. I would definitely recommend the Altima to anyone looking for a great car!

  4. Vernon Collier 2024-11-05

With over 105,000 miles, your car is still going strong! It's great to hear that only standard repairs have been done, such as brakes, struts, hoses, belts, and regular scheduled Nissan maintenance. I love the Altima's original style and performance, and it's fantastic that Nissan brought the fun back to the Altima in 2002. It's wonderful that you bought a new Maxima for your wife, but kept the 1993 Altima for yourself. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I've been driving this vehicle for 10 years now and it has given me nothing but good times. I've made sure to keep up with the maintenance and as a result, I've had little to no problems. It's sneaky fast and often underestimated for its acceleration. Even to this day, it still has enough power to have fun with. I still enjoy driving it every day.
