1996 Audi A6 problems

audi logo

The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 1996 Audi A6 problems

The Audi A6 C4, produced from 1994 to 1997, is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is static electricity problems that caused the driver's airbag to activate in some cases, leading to the withdrawal of the 1995 and 1996 models by Audi.

Electrical problems are also prevalent in the Audi A6 C4. The ABS system often suffers from electrical issues, with broken contacts in the block being a common culprit. The suspension, particularly in front-wheel-drive models, can lose its noiselessness over time, with silent locks on the stabilizer level being a weak point. When buying a used Audi A6 C4, it's essential to check the power steering system for leaks and corrosion, as this is another area where problems can arise

The Audi A6 C4's engine is generally reliable, but there are some issues to be aware of. The V6 engines of the ABC and double ah series, with a volume of 2.6 and 2.8 liters, are considered the best choice for the S A6 C4 due to their reliability and durable control system. However, these engines have a timing belt with a relatively small resource, and it's recommended to change it every 60,000 kilometers. The 1.8 engine is also known for issues related to oil leaks and emulsion in the oil, which can damage the cylinder head valve. It's essential to monitor the oil pressure, the condition of the oil pump, and the cooling system to avoid these problems

In summary, the Audi A6 C4 has several common problems related to electrical issues, fuel gauge readings, and engine-related concerns. When purchasing a used Audi A6 C4, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect the vehicle, paying particular attention to the ABS system, suspension, power steering system, and engine, to ensure that any potential issues are identified and addressed before making a purchase.

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-02-11
  • VIN: WAUJC84A7TN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: ON THE MORNING OF FEBRUARY 11TH 2014, MY DAUGHTER WAS ON HER WAY TO SCHOOL WHEN HER VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. SHE BELIEVES SHE WAS GOING BETWEEN 25 AND 35 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND TOPPED OUT AT 70 BEFORE SHE WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO SLOW DOWN. SHE STATED TO ME AFTER THE INCIDENT THAT SHE HAD TO PRESS BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT AND SHE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TOOK HER CAR TO FRIEND'S HOUSE, DROPPED HER OFF AT SCHOOL AND TOOK HER VEHICLE TO SUNNY SIDE AUDI IN MIDDLEBURG OHIO. THEY FOUND THE SPEED CONTROL WAS MALFUNCTIONING. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD BE BETWEEN $800 AND $1000 TO REPAIR. I PAID THEM $138.00 TO DISCONNECT THE CRUISE CONTROL AND WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY CONTINUING PROBLEMS WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE $138 ISN'T GOING TO BREAK ME BUT THEN AGAIN BREAKING ME IS WHY I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT. I HAVE GIVEN THIS INCIDENT A LOT OF THOUGHT; WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED, HOW LUCKY WE ARE THAT MY DAUGHTER DIDN'T PANIC AND THEN I REALIZED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN LIKELY MANY MORE 1996 AUDI A6'S OUT THERE AND WHO KNOWS OTHER AUDI'S IN GENERAL WITH THE SAME CRUISE CONTROL SET UP THAT IS INSTALLED IN OUR CAR THAT HAVE OR WILL MALFUNCTION. I AM HOPING THAT SOMEONE WILL LOOK INTO THIS INCIDENT. YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO INSPECT OUR VEHICLE. I WAS SURPRISED BY THE RESPONSE OF THE SUNNY SIDE AUDI SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY OFFERED US NO SUPPORT OR AVENUE FOR ASSISTANCE FOR REPAIR AND TREATED THIS INCIDENT LIKE ANY OTHER VEHICLE REPAIR. WE WERE LUCKY IT WASN'T WORSE AND WE ARE GRATEFUL BUT I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED AND HAVE THE VEHICLE PROPERLY REPAIRED. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-04-13
  • VIN: WAUDA88D1TA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: LET ME START BY SAYING I ORIGINALLY DIRECTED THIS COMPLAINT TO THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE, WHO SENT ME A LETTER, DIRECTING ME TO SEND THIS COMPLAINT TO THE NHTSA. THE IGNITION SWITCH WENT OUT IN THE 1996 AUDI A4, AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL # 06V403000. THIS LEFT ME STRANDED , AND I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE PUSHED A FEW BLOCKS DOWN TO THE CLOSEST REPAIR SHOP. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED, AND I SENT IN MY REIMBURSEMENT FORM ,INCLUDING PROPER DOCUMENTATION THAT THE RECALL NOTICE HAD ASKED FOR. THIS RECALL NOTICE WAS OF COURSE SENT TO ME BY AUDI OF AMERICA. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM AUDI'S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE REIMBURSING ME. WHEN I ASKED WHY, THEY SAID THAT THE WORK HAD TO BE COMPLETED WITH IN A CERTAIN TIME FRAME. I TOLD THEM THE RECALL NOTICE SENT TO ME MENTIONED NO SUCH TIME FRAME. THEN, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE WORK COULD ONLY BE DONE AT AN AUDI DEALERSHIP. I THEN REPLIED THAT A REIMBURSEMENT FORM WAS SENT TO ME WITH THE RECALL NOTICE IN CASE THE WORK DONE ANYWHERE ELSE. WHEN I TOLD THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT THE CAR HAD BROKEN DOWN AND DIDN'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF TAKING THE CAR TO THE NEAREST AUDI DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD TAKE ALL THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK FOR THE WORK THAT HAD BEEN DONE, AND THE DEFECTIVE PART TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY WOULD EXAMINE IT, BUT THEY WERE NOT PROMISING ANYTHING. THIS OF COURSE WAS NOT POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE DEFECTIVE PART WAS LONG GONE, AND THE REIMBURSEMENT FORM MENTIONED NOTHING OF KEEPING IT FOR ANY PURPOSE. THE REASON I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT WAS BECAUSE I FELT I WAS BEING CHEATED OF MY REIMBURSEMENT MONEY, WHEN I HAVE CLEARLY PRODUCED ALL PAPER WORK, INCLUDING RECEIPTS, THAT THE REIMBURSEMENT FORM HAD ASKED FOR. I WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT IN THE AMOUNT OF $398.44 FROM AUDI OF AMERICA. *AK

Negative 1996 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Oswaldo Bogisich 2024-03-01

I have to admit that the car is a little heavy for the 2.8 v6, and the 4-speed automatic transmission doesn't help. However, I've had a lot of fun with this car. I can drift and do donuts all day in a snowy parking lot. Unlike other AWD cars, the rear wheels have power all the time, which means a lot of fun. The quattro is excellent for my ice rink of a driveway and provides confidence going into corners. I get decent gas mileage, about 22 on average, which isn't bad for a v6 AWD luxury car that is 12 years old. Although I've added two 10

  2. Peter Hill 2024-02-11

If you're looking for a car with great gas mileage or performance, this might not be the best option for you. However, the quattro system is competent for its age. Although the car is a bit complicated to work on, it has been reliable for me. I have had to change a few parts, but that's to be expected with any car. The car is spacious, but might not be the best fit for taller drivers. Overall, it's a decent car for its price range.

  3. Seamus Rodriguez 2024-01-16

I'm thrilled with my Audi A6 Quattro! As a tall guy at 6'4

Positive 1996 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Mustafa Senger 2024-09-10

Your first Audi sounds like it was a great car! It's wonderful to hear that you had such a positive experience with it for 7 years. Your 1996 Audi also sounds like a fantastic vehicle, especially in snowy weather. It's impressive that you can fit your whole family of 6 in the car with the help of the back-facing rear seat. The car's peppy performance and beautiful interior design with red lighted gauges make it even more enjoyable to drive. It's a shame to hear that the Audi CD player didn't last long after being installed by Audi, but overall it sounds like you're really enjoying the ride!

  2. Seamus Lesch 2024-08-24

This car is so much fun to drive! It's incredibly roomy and has everything you could possibly need in a car. While there are a few things I don't love about it, overall, it's a really nice car.

  3. Jared Runolfsson 2024-06-29

Audi's are fantastic! They're enjoyable to drive in any weather, whether it's raining or snowing.

  4. Tristian Fisher 2024-06-23

Superb vehicle if you live in the north where winter can be an issue for getting around. The Quattro system is the world's best real-time all-wheel drive system. However, it is important to note that high maintenance prices are to be expected and it is not recommended to buy an Audi without a warranty. The built quality of both the interior and exterior is very high compared to domestic vehicles.

  5. Green Farrell 2024-06-16

I purchased this car with 96,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. With nearly 225,000 miles on the clock, it still handles mountain roads with ease and there isn't a single rattle or squeak to be heard. Although it's starting to show its age and I've had to replace some shocks, a transmission seal, and a few interior switches, the engine has been flawless. It drives comfortably and confidently on mountain roads, making my daily commute a breeze. The climate control system could use some work, but that's to be expected with a car of this age. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and I consider myself lucky to have found such a great car!
