1997 Chrysler Concorde problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Concorde is a full-size car that was produced by Chrysler from 1992 to 2004. It assumed the C-body Chrysler New Yorker Salon's position as the entry-level full-size sedan in the Chrysler brand lineup. One of Chrysler's three original Chrysler LH platform models, it has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.

The Concorde was related to the Chrysler/Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler LHS, and the eleventh and final generation Chrysler New Yorker.

It was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1993 and 1994.

Common 1997 Chrysler Concorde problems

The Chrysler Concorde, introduced in 1993, is a large front-wheel-drive sedan that was produced until 2004. While many owners have praised the Concorde for its comfort, power, and smooth ride, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of the 1997 model year.

One of the most common problems with the 1997 Chrysler Concorde is engine failure due to oil sludge. This issue has been reported by 25 owners of the 2000 Concorde, 18 owners of the 1999 Concorde, and 16 owners of the 2001 Concorde. The problem is caused by the 2.7L DaimlerChrysler engine's susceptibility to oil sludge, which is a sticky substance that can coat the inside of the engine and retain heat. This can put severe strain on the mechanical parts of the engine and lead to engine failure.

Another common problem with the 1997 Chrysler Concorde is the automatic temperature control (ATC) system causing the heat or air conditioning to turn on automatically. This issue has been reported by 7 owners of the 1993 Concorde. The ATC system is designed to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car, but it can sometimes malfunction and cause the heat or air conditioning to turn on when it's not needed.

The car also has issues with the timing belt and water pump, which can fail at around 150,000 miles. This can be a major problem, as the timing belt is responsible for keeping the engine's valves and pistons in sync. If the timing belt fails, it can cause serious engine damage.

Additionally, the brake lines can rust and fail, especially if the car is not garaged and suffers through harsh winters. This can be a serious safety issue, as it can cause the brakes to fail.

The car also has some electrical issues, such as the interior lights and power windows failing to work properly. These issues can be frustrating, but they are not typically major safety concerns.

The car's handling has also been criticized by some owners, with some describing it as "a bit of a boat". This can make the car feel less stable and responsive, especially when driving at high speeds.

The interior of the car is generally well-regarded, with comfortable and adjustable power seats, a good sound system, and a roomy back seat.

Overall, the 1997 Chrysler Concorde is a car that has some common problems, particularly with the engine, ATC system, and electrical systems. However, many owners have praised the car for its comfort, power, and smooth ride, and it can be a good value for the money if you can find a well-maintained example. It's important to note that these are common problems, but not all cars will experience these issues, and it's always a good idea to have any used car inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing.

Negative 1997 Chrysler Concorde car reviews

  1. Fredy Leannon 2025-01-01

The car has experienced several electrical issues, including an intermittent windshield wiper problem in cold weather and multiple engine warning lights. Despite replacing seven oxygen sensors in 123k miles, the issues persist. When requesting a meeting with the regional representative to address computer problems, the request was denied. The manager of Barton Chrysler in Union City, GA suggested that with over 100k miles, it is expected to have the car in for repairs every three months or so. As a loyal customer who has owned five Chrysler products, I am disappointed that this car has required the most repairs of any car I have owned since 1959.

  2. Gerardo O'Reilly 2024-06-06

In the 4 years of owning this car, I have invested nearly $6000 in repairs, excluding regular maintenance like tires and brakes. Despite some challenges, such as the AC not holding a charge for more than 6 months and various suspension problems totaling $3000, I have been able to maintain the car's performance. Although the ABS and traction control have failed and the CD player frequently doesn't work, the driving experience is what you would expect from a large American sedan, with great performance on the highway.

  3. Alford Braun 2024-02-01

This car has been a bit of a challenge. Although it looks great, I have had a few issues with it. I have already spent $800.00 on repairing the a/c, and now the blower has gone out. Unfortunately, I was quoted $600.00 for that repair. Additionally, both sun visor clips have snapped. I would really appreciate it if cars were built to last longer. Considering the price, I expect a certain level of durability. I take great care of my car, but there is only so much I can do. Let's aim to create cars that are both beautiful and long-lasting.

Positive 1997 Chrysler Concorde car reviews

  1. Mohammed Schumm 2024-10-05

Owned since new. First Chrysler product I've had. This has been the most trouble-free car I've ever owned. With over 80,000 miles on the odometer, it has only required repairs for normal maintenance items. The only exceptions were replacing the air conditioning drier under the dash with related work (partly covered by Chrysler) at 55,000 miles and replacing an oxygen sensor at 65,000 miles.

  2. Lloyd Runolfsdottir 2024-09-21

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 97 car. Although I had to replace the steering rack, ps pump, fuel pump, and rear struts within the first two months of ownership with about 65000 miles on the clock, I'm happy to say that I've had no problems since then, even after driving an additional 30000 miles. The body integrity is excellent, a real stiff unit, and I get about 23 city and 29 highway miles per gallon with my easy foot. The engine is smooth but lacking in torque in lower rpm's. Externally, this has to be one of the most beautiful designs ever. I never approach it without thinking what a beautiful car. Thanks for listening!

  3. Kim Hammes 2024-09-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for four years now and have put quite a few miles on it. I've noticed that around every 65,000 miles, some things start to break down. This has been a bit frustrating, especially since my previous car, a Mazda Protege, was trouble-free for 215,000 miles. However, I did buy this car wholesale and it has still been a good economic choice for me. While I don't think I'll be visiting a Chrysler showroom anytime soon, I'm still happy with my purchase overall.

I'm so glad I purchased this car from a low-end dealer! Even though it was a 1997 model with 145,000 miles on it, I only paid $3,500 for it and it has exceeded my expectations. I haven't had any major issues with it, except for the fact that I will need to replace all four tires soon. Unfortunately, the CD player stopped working about a week ago. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and I'm confident that this car will last well beyond 200,000 miles!

Very little maintenance is required for this car other than oiling and lubrication. I did replace the belts, including timing, at 120,000 miles. It's a good-looking car and is fuel-efficient.
