2019 Chevrolet Traverse problems

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating built by General Motors. It is built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, known as the Lambda platform for the first generation, and the C1XX for the second generation. It also shares the C1XX platform with the Cadillac XT6. It is the successor to the TrailBlazer body-on-frame SUV and the Uplander minivan.

The second-generation model debuted in showrooms in the summer of 2017. Starting with the 2019 model year, the Traverse was slotted above the new mid-size Chevrolet Blazer as part of Chevrolet's plans to expand its SUV lineup.

The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Equinox launched for the 2005 model year.

Common 2019 Chevrolet Traverse problems

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, electrical system, engine, and exhaust.

Transmission issues are a significant concern for Traverse owners. One of the most common problems is the "Shift To Park Message" and jerking during driving. This issue can be dangerous and inconvenient, as it may cause the vehicle to stall or lose power unexpectedly. The problem seems to be related to the transmission control module or the wiring between the shifter and the module.

Electrical problems are another common issue with the 2019 Traverse. Some owners have reported that the radio station changes when honking the horn, which can be distracting and potentially dangerous while driving. Additionally, there have been reports of electrical system malfunctions, including issues with the remote, rearview mirror, cellphone charging port, blind spot detection, forward collision detection, and navigation and iPhone audio connections. These problems can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle, making it difficult or even impossible to drive.

Engine problems are also a concern for Traverse owners. Some owners have reported reduced engine power, rattling, stalling, surging, shaking, smoking, and unintended acceleration. These issues can affect the performance and safety of the vehicle, and in some cases, they have been reported to cause vehicle fires. Additionally, there have been reports of engine defects and transmission issues that may qualify the vehicle for a lemon law claim.

Exhaust problems are another common issue with the 2019 Traverse. Some owners have reported that rocks from the road have damaged the muffler system, causing leaks and other issues. Additionally, there have been reports of catalytic converters failing and needing to be replaced multiple times. These issues can affect the performance and safety of the vehicle, and they can also be expensive to repair.

In conclusion, the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse has several common problems that can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle. These issues include transmission problems, electrical system malfunctions, engine defects, and exhaust problems. Owners of the 2019 Traverse are encouraged to be aware of these issues and to seek prompt repairs if they experience any problems with their vehicle.

For this to happen and then happen again after extensive work at the Chevy dealer definitely put my family and I at severe risk each times because the car would not move while on a busy highway, dangerous to say the least. We have multiple service records and mentioned the initial occurrence that we thought was fixed but apparently there is a major issue . Disappointing that I don’t feel safe putting myself or my children in my own truck, for the fear of it happening again. Please help!

Negative 2019 Chevrolet Traverse car reviews

  1. Garnet Langosh 2024-11-18

I really wish this SUV was offered in FWD. I wasn't interested in having multiple moon roofs and I don't like that the engine's start stop feature can't be disabled. However, I must say that it is a very attractive SUV. While the dealer didn't offer the new GM 6 year extended warranty and instead pushed a more expensive option, the dealership was otherwise very pleasant to work with. Unfortunately, I experienced a total transmission failure at only 16000 miles and the vehicle locked up in traffic. It took almost a month to repair and I have had a few more service issues since then. The latest issue I'm facing is that when I shut the vehicle off, it keeps telling me to shift into park, which I have already done. This happens repeatedly (about 90% of the time) and the alarm goes off and won't stop.

  2. Patrick Rice 2024-10-13

At 39k miles, there is an unfortunate rattling noise and the RPM is revving higher than it should. Based on the symptoms, it is likely a bad catalytic converter. It appears that this may be a common issue with the 2019 Traverse. It is recommended to consider purchasing an extended bumper to bumper warranty. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  3. Wendell Kirlin 2024-10-09

I purchased my 2019 Chevy Traverse new and at 50K miles I've already had to have $2800 of major repairs done. The Front Exhaust Pipe and Muffler required repair, which was not covered by my powertrain warranty, and cost $1600 to fix. Additionally, the bank 1 catalytic converter was cracked and had an exhaust leak, which would have cost $1200 to repair. However, I was fortunate that the catalytic converter was covered under my powertrain warranty.

  4. Edwardo Rice 2024-09-29

I have been driving my premier traverse for 2 months now, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with its performance on scored highways. The car seems to be unstable and it's noticeable even to my passengers. Today, I had it checked by the dealer, but they said that there is nothing wrong with it and that this is a common occurrence when driving on that type of road. I am disappointed with this response, as my previous car, a 2014 traverse, never had this issue on the same roads that I drive on weekly. While the car performs well on regular roads, I am concerned about how it will handle in ice and snow. Overall, I regret purchasing this car. It would be great if there were more options for choosing roads.

  5. Remington Trantow 2024-09-20

I loved my Traverse! It was spacious, sporty, and fun to drive. However, after just 50k miles, I experienced a scary incident while driving on the highway. The whole wheel and axle fell off, causing me to crash. Thankfully, I wasn't injured. I really hope there will be an investigation to find the cause.

  1. Richard Hettinger 2025-01-07

My first SUV in over 20 years and I can't believe I've waited so long to go back. I test drove the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot, but the Traverse was the roomiest and hands down felt the smoothest. As someone who is 6'03

  2. Monroe Ratke 2024-11-09

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to give you a quick update on my Traverse. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on a couple of weeks ago. However, the good news is that it was an easy fix and it was still under warranty. The service team told me that there was something about a flap by the radiator that wasn't opening and closing to vent. On another note, I'm not a big fan of the auto stop feature of the vehicle. It can be a bit frustrating when the vehicle shuts off every time you come to a stop sign. Plus, if you have anything charging, the phone stops charging when autostop happens. Despite this, I still love my Traverse! It's incredibly spacious and can easily accommodate two car seats while still leaving ample leg room for other passengers. Additionally, it's loaded with features like blind spot monitoring, surround camera, leather heated seats, remote start, and a life gate. The only minor issue I've noticed is that the brakes aren't as sensitive as I would like them to be. Also, the blind spot monitoring doesn't make an audible sound. Overall, I'm really happy with my Traverse and I hope this update finds you well!

  3. Billy Funk 2024-10-16

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Traverse LT during a recent ski trip. I was travelling with three adults and a lot of luggage, but the front wheel drive handled the icy roads like a champ! I've owned Tahoes and Suburbans in the past, but this vehicle performed just as well and has great mileage. The engine is powerful and can easily handle a passenger load of six adults. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the vehicle. While the seats aren't the most comfortable, the materials are nice and durable. One thing I do wish is that I could override the stop engine feature like I can in my 2020 truck. My biggest concern is that the transmission temperature can go as high as 212 degrees in summer weather with an ambient temperature of 95+. While the engine temperature readings are normal, I'm a bit worried about the long term effects of the high transmission temperature. Thanks for listening!

  4. Emmanuel Hill 2024-10-07

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Premier! It sounds like it's a significant upgrade from your previous LTZ, and I'm happy to hear that you're impressed with all of the features and amenities it has to offer. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Walter Fadel 2024-09-16

I've owned two Traverses now and I must say, I'm really enjoying my 2019 RedLine Edition. It's a sleek looking SUV that gets great gas mileage on both city streets and highways. They've made some changes to its features, making it a lot more modern. It's now a bit wider and longer, giving you more leg room all around. I absolutely love the extra storage they've added in the rear under the carpet. The only thing that bothers me personally is the 'Auto-Stop'. It's just plain unwarranted and can be quite annoying. People sitting at stop lights have even asked if my vehicle has stalled and if I need help. Also, I do wish that it had the option to eliminate the 3rd row seating. Other than those two items, I would highly recommend the Traverse to anyone looking for a mid-sized SUV.
