Chevrolet Traverse problems

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating built by General Motors. It is built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, known as the Lambda platform for the first generation, and the C1XX for the second generation. It also shares the C1XX platform with the Cadillac XT6. It is the successor to the TrailBlazer body-on-frame SUV and the Uplander minivan.

The second-generation model debuted in showrooms in the summer of 2017. Starting with the 2019 model year, the Traverse was slotted above the new mid-size Chevrolet Blazer as part of Chevrolet's plans to expand its SUV lineup.

The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Equinox launched for the 2005 model year.

Latest negative Chevrolet Traverse car reviews

  1. Johnnie Skiles 2025-07-13

    Vehicle year: 2009

The Traverse has been with us for two years now. However, on Friday, while driving down a 4-lane highway, it faced some issues with shifting. I managed to get it home safely, but upon taking it to the auto center, they refused to work on it, citing the possibility of the issue recurring. Additionally, the car wouldn't go in reverse. We have had some problems with the power steering and have had to deal with three recalls. It seems that there is something wrong with the 2009 version of this car. Interestingly, my brother faced the same issue, and the repair shop owner mentioned that his sister had the same problem. We are currently getting another estimate, as the first one suggested that the issue was with the transmission. Despite these issues, the Traverse is a great car if you are willing to invest in repairs.

  2. Noah Kutch 2025-07-12

    Vehicle year: 2010

I purchased my 2010 Traverse brand new and have put about 65,000 miles on it, averaging less than 12,000 miles per year. While I have experienced some recurring issues with the vehicle, it has served me well as a reliable commuting and family car. On the positive side, the Traverse has plenty of seating and storage options, making it a comfortable ride for my family of six. The ride and handling are generally good, although not exceptional. On the downside, I had a terrible experience with the original dealer's service department, but after switching dealerships, I have had much better service. Additionally, I have had to replace a gear for one of the Heating/AC system actuator doors four times, but the last repair seems to have been successful. Finally, I had to replace the throttle body at around 42,000 miles, which was a first for me. Overall, I have had some issues with the Traverse, but it has been a reliable and comfortable car for my family.I'm so grateful that GM agreed to cover the repair for my throttle body, even though I was just a few thousand miles out of warranty. However, I was disappointed to learn that I needed to replace the timing chains at only 62,000 miles, which would have cost almost $3,000. GM did agree that the timing chains should not need to be replaced at such low mileage, but they only offered to cover $1,000 of the cost. Unfortunately, there are also some general design and aggravation issues with this vehicle. For example, the rear windshield wiper cannot be replaced DIY and the headlamp bulb replacement process is quite complicated. Recently, the front windshield wiper motor also failed and needs to be replaced. Overall, I have purchased new cars 6 times in my life and I have never had a vehicle with so many issues where parts simply failed in such a short life span. It leads me to believe that lots of shortcuts were taken in the design and manufacturing of this car. While I cannot speak for newer model Traverses, my 2010 LS is simply not a very high quality automobile.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 Chevy Traverse that I got from Rick Hendricks back in January 2015. Unfortunately, I've been having some trouble with the transmission. I took it to Rick Hendricks' mechanic shop in February, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. However, a few months later in May, the transmission went out and they had to fix it. Now, just a month later, the transmission is slipping again. I do have a powertrain warranty, but it's frustrating to have to pay $150 for something that shouldn't be happening. Thanks for listening!

  4. Vicente Moore 2025-07-10

    Vehicle year: 2018

After owning it for a few years, I can confidently say that it is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. I am done with Chevy. The constant need for repairs, including a new ECU, new axles, and a broken exhaust, as well as rattling doors, console, and a malfunctioning infotainment system, and a broken driver's seat, all within just 2 years of ownership, have convinced me that this car is not worth the trouble.

The evaporator core was replaced and 1 yr and 2 weeks later it is leaking again. The dealership that replaced it should have replaced the other part at the same time. Another $1100 is required to fix it properly. Additionally, the dash lights, radio and a few other things are randomly turning off and on.

    Vehicle year: 2021

I walked into the dealership to get an oil change for my Chevy Equinox Premier and was immediately drawn to a stunning black on black Traverse with roof racks on the showroom floor! At first, I thought the Traverse was too plain, but this one stood out. I called my husband and told him I was taking it for a test drive, and he encouraged me to do so. The ride was incredibly smooth and quiet, and the legroom in the second row was superior. I was impressed by the V6 engine's power and loved the little hidden storage behind the infotainment screen with valet lock. The rear storage was plenty big enough. Although my Traverse doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Premier or High Country, I don't miss any of them like I thought I would. Overall, it's been an excellent vehicle. I've owned many brands of SUVs, and this one is definitely one of my top-rated SUVs. One other thing to mention is that everyone thinks I'm a police officer and pulls over... haha! :)

  2. Ross Halvorson 2025-07-14

    Vehicle year: 2020

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that my 2020 Traverse sometimes makes a strange noise when I brake, even though I'm stopping on dry pavement. I've taken it to the dealer twice, but unfortunately, they weren't able to hear the noise. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? It's a bit weird, but overall the car is great. The service department did a test and everything seemed fine, but they didn't actually look at the brakes. I guess that will be my next step. Thanks for any help you can provide!

  3. Raven Schoen 2025-07-14

My wife and I visited the dealership to explore our options for a 3-Row vehicle that would fit our budget. During the test-drive of the Traverse, we were pleasantly surprised by its exceptional performance. The smooth ride and transmission, along with the premium interior materials, made it clear that this was a luxury vehicle. We were impressed by the fit and finish of all internal mechanisms, which added to the overall premium feel of the car. After careful consideration, we decided to purchase the LT Cloth version with the Driver Comfort and Convenience Package, as it offered the best value among the various trims. As a daily driver for my wife, the lack of leather was not a concern. We are a happy family with no regrets about our purchase. I hope this review helps others who are considering vehicles in this price range and class.

After 6 months and 7,000 km, I am thrilled with my 2020 RS! The amount of space is incredible - I keep the 3rd row of seats down most of the time, and it provides more trunk space than any other vehicle I have owned. The fuel economy is also impressive - I've averaged 8.9 ltrs/100 km so far, which is much better than the 11.7 I used to get with my 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4-door. The ride is incredibly comfortable, even better than my neighbour's Toyota Highlander and another's Ford Explorer. It's also packed with helpful technology and easy to get in and out of. The only downsides are the Auto Stop feature, which can be frustrating in city traffic, and the heated steering wheel, which gets too hot. (I'm going to get the dealership to check this at the next service.) Overall, the Chev is a winner! It handles snowy Canadian winters with ease, even with 6 inches of snow on the roads. I'll update this in a few months. UPDATE: After 11 months and 13,500 km, I'm happy to report that the Traverse continues to exceed my expectations. The gas consumption has averaged 9.4 litres/100 km, even with a 2,000lb trailer in tow on several long trips. While I've become used to the Auto-Stop feature, I still wish there was an override button. I also purchased a Curt Echo Bluetooth electric brake controller, which works perfectly. I towed a 4,000 cargo trailer equipped with electric brakes for several hundred kms, and the controller worked really well. Using the cellphone app to adjust it is very easy.I would give the Traverse 5 stars if it weren't for the high purchase price and the lack of an override for the Auto-Stop. However, it's a very comfortable and spacious vehicle that has proven to be reliable so far. I highly recommend it. UPDATE December1, 2022: It has been 26 months since I purchased the Traverse, and with 38,700 kms on the clock, it continues to be an awesome vehicle. The average gas consumption has improved to 8.6 litres/100 kms. I did have to make one tiny warranty claim, but the dealership replaced the chrome strip on the trunk, between the tail lights, without any issues. The all-wheel system works really well in the snowy Canadian winter, especially with decent snow tires fitted. In conclusion, I'm still very happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to several more years of ownership. UPDATE June 5, 20232: After 2 1/2 years and 47,000 KMS, the Traverse is still running smoothly. The overall fuel economy has improved to 7.9 litres/100 km. The summer rims and tires are back on, and the tire noise is barely noticeable. Hopefully, I'll be back with another update later in the year. UPDATE December 6, 2023: After 3 years and 3 months of ownership and 53,000+ kms, our Traverse is still running perfectly. We have absolutely no complaints. The winter tires are back on, and while they're a little noisier than the summer tires, the ride is smoother with the smaller rims and higher-profile tires. The overall gas consumption is an amazing 7.6 lts/100 km (31 mpg), including a fair amount of towing a 3,500 lbs utility trailer. I'll be back with another update next summer.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you were looking for a used Traverse, specifically a 2018 model year or later. I actually found one myself with only 300 miles on it! The options on this vehicle were really appealing, not too much but not the bare minimum either. What really sold me on this Traverse were the features and the price. Instead of settling for a 2018 model with 40,000 or 50,000 miles for a price in the low 30's, I was able to get a 2021 model for only $4,000 more. The size is perfect for my needs, with a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. I have to say, the design, ride, and handling are all beautiful. I can't wait to hit the open road! Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.
