1995 Plymouth Acclaim problems
The Plymouth Acclaim is a mid-size sedan produced in the 1989 to 1995 model years. The Acclaim was Plymouth's updated replacement for both the similarly sized E-body Caravelle and the K-body Reliant. Badge engineering was employed to give Dodge and Chrysler their own versions of the AA-body Acclaim: the Dodge Spirit, the Chrysler LeBaron sedan, and the export-market Chrysler Saratoga. It was replaced by the Plymouth Breeze in 1996.
Platform
The Acclaim was a version of the Chrysler Corporation's AA-body 4-door sedan, which was an evolutionary development of Chrysler's extended K-car platform. Acclaim (and Dodge Spirit) production ended on December 9, 1994, after a short 1995 model year and the Cab-forward Plymouth Breeze was introduced as a replacement for 1996. The Acclaim was one of the last K-car derivatives produced by Chrysler. In all, just under half a million examples of the Acclaim were built in its 7-model year run.
Market positioning
The AA-body cars were badge-engineered triplets, as were most Chrysler products of this time. The Acclaim differed from its siblings primarily in wheel choices, bodyside molding, and fascias where it sported its unique taillights and the corporate Plymouth eggcrate-grille. Like the K-body and E-body vehicles they replaced, the Acclaim and Dodge Spirit were both marketed as mainstream variants, while the Chrysler LeBaron was marketed as the luxury variant. Despite this, there was substantial overlap in trims and equipment among each car. For example, a fully loaded Acclaim was almost similar to a base LeBaron in features and price.
In addition to its entry-level base model, the Acclaim was initially available in mid-range LE and high-end LX trim. LE and LX models came equipped with features such including premium cloth seating, power windows/door locks, premium sound systems, bodyside cladding, additional exterior brightwork, and on the latter 15-inch lace-spoke aluminum wheels. In spite of this, the base model accounted for nearly 85 percent of Acclaim sales. Unlike the Spirit, the Acclaim did not receive any sport-oriented models.
The Acclaim has also been characterized as the replacement for the smaller Reliant, though the Sundance launched in 1987 is closer than the Acclaim in most dimensions to the Reliant.

What is the Dodge equivalent of a Plymouth Acclaim?
Dodge Spirit
Badge engineering was employed to give Dodge and Chrysler their own versions of the AA-body Acclaim: the Dodge Spirit, the Chrysler LeBaron sedan, and the export-market Chrysler Saratoga.
Why was Plymouth discontinued?
Plymouth (1928-2001): Once a well-known brand under the Chrysler umbrella, Plymouth was discontinued due to overlapping models and declining sales. Oldsmobile (1897-2004): Established in 1897, Oldsmobile faced declining sales and was eventually phased out by General Motors to streamline its brand portfolio.
Was Plymouth made by Ford?
Plymouth was a brand of automobiles produced by Chrysler Corporation and its successor DaimlerChrysler. The brand was launched in 1928 to compete in what was then described as the "low-priced" market segment that was dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. It became a high-volume seller for the automaker until the late 1990s.
What was the failure of Plymouth?
After a rough start, the Plymouth Colony found some success as the colonists learned how to grow crops. However, due to poor soil, population increase, and wars with the native tribes, the Colony was eventually absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
When did they stop making the Plymouth Acclaim?
Acclaim (and Dodge Spirit) production ended on December 9, 1994, after a short 1995 model year and the Cab-forward Plymouth Breeze was introduced as a replacement for 1996. The Acclaim was one of the last K-car derivatives produced by Chrysler.
Why did Plymouth cars fail?
Final years: 1990s–2001
By the 1990s, Plymouth had lost much of its identity, as its models continued to overlap in features and prices with its sister brands, Dodge and Eagle. Chrysler attempted to remedy this by repositioning Plymouth to its traditional target market as the automaker's entry-level brand.
Why did Plymouth stop?
It's all about the money. As staid as it may sound, the answer has nothing to do with corporate intrigue, malfeasance from competitors, or even cars so bad it killed the brand, even if the Plymouth Prowler didn't help much. Plymouth went the way of the dodo for one simple reason: Money.
What were the problems in Plymouth?
Many of the colonists fell ill. They were probably suffering from scurvy and pneumonia caused by a lack of shelter in the cold, wet weather. Although the Pilgrims were not starving, their sea-diet was very high in salt, which weakened their bodies on the long journey and during that first winter.

What a great car! It's both fun and practical to drive. My daughter used it as her college car, and when she graduated, I used it as my commuting car. It lasted an impressive 102,000 miles before I donated it to the Salvation Army. It accelerates quicker than a Camry and corners better than a BMW 318 - no kidding! If you're looking to buy one, I highly recommend getting a model with power windows and locks. I didn't have these features on mine, and I really missed them. Overall, Chrysler did an excellent job with the Acclaim and its sister.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your car! It's amazing that you've been able to drive it for two years without any issues, and it's even more impressive that it's still running like new with over 113,000 miles on it. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

I absolutely loved my Acclaim, despite my dislike for the purple color. I purchased it in 2002 for $2,500.00 and it came with every available option. The stereo was fantastic, with a 3 band equalizer sound system and the ability to play both tapes and CDs. The 3.0 V6 engine was incredibly powerful and could easily smoke the front tires. I was meticulous about maintenance, changing the engine oil every 2,000 miles, the trans oil every 20,000 miles, and the brake fluid every time the pads were changed. The car was incredibly fuel efficient and spacious. Unfortunately, at 195,000 miles, a Jimmy John's delivery driver ran a stop sign and nearly destroyed the entire front end of the car. Although I was able to walk away from the accident, I was devastated to lose such an amazing car. I would have purchased another Acclaim if I could have found one that was just as good.

I recently purchased this vehicle from a friend who had owned it since it was new. Despite having over 160k miles on the clock, it is still going strong. The 3L/3spd combination is incredibly reliable. I have no complaints whatsoever, it has been a great source of cheap and dependable transportation.

It sounds like you had a great experience with your car! It lasted an impressive 100,000 miles before needing any repairs, and even after that, repairs were relatively infrequent. The car was also very affordable to purchase and maintain, with the most expensive repair costing only $600. With a fuel economy of 35mpg on the highway, it was also very efficient. It's great to hear that the car was well-built and didn't have any issues with squeaks or rattles. Overall, it seems like a fantastic choice for a small American car.

That was definitely an expensive repair! It seems like the stabilizer bar and wheel alignment are common repairs needed for cars. Your car had a lot of trouble with both the front and back wheels, and the parts and connections to them. It cost you over $3000 in just two years.

I recently purchased this car from a neighbor who is an acquaintance of mine and his. One of the best things about it is that it starts up in any weather condition and the AM/FM radio always works perfectly. It also has great gas mileage and doesn't burn any oil, even though it's almost ten years old. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Furman Wiegand 2024-08-21
This vehicle really surprised me! The overall performance was beyond my expectation, and I was especially impressed with the spacious back seat area. While there have been some maintenance issues, such as the radiator, there is currently an oil leak and the transmission is dragging. Let's work together to find a solution!
Rogelio Renner 2024-07-19
My car has been meticulously maintained. I exclusively use octane 93 fuel and change the oil every 5,000 miles. I have also upgraded to Sylvania white bulbs. I purchased the car with only 36,000 original miles. Unfortunately, at 90,000 miles, the transmission malfunctioned and would only run in 2nd gear (I have a V6-4sp). Thankfully, I had a full warranty, but the repair cost was nearly $1,700. Despite having to replace the ASI pump and AC system three times each, the check engine light intermittently comes on and off without explanation. Overall, the car is decent, but it is disappointing that such a car was built by Americans.
