2005 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-12
  • VIN: 1G1ZT64855F
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The car was allegedly previously repaired under Product Safety Recall Bulletin No.: 14116 back in 2014. The vehicle was 10 years old at that time. Now in 2024, 10 years later, the power steering issue is back. As the vehicle is operated, a sound rings from the computer system and a message warning about Power Steering appears on the center console screen. The electronic power steering then stops working entirely and steering becomes incredibly difficult. In July 2010, GM issued Service Bulletin No.: 10183. The Subject of the Bulletin was "Special Coverage Adjustment - Power Steering Assist." The Condition described in the bulletin is the same as the problem described above. GM extended coverage of this issue to 10 years and 100,000 miles. In May of 2012, GM issued Service Bulletin No.: 10183A, which extended coverage to 150,000 miles. In September 2014, NHTSA stepped in and forced GM to issue Recall Bulletin No.: 14116 with the subject "Power Steering Assist." GM knows that some vehicles on the road have had this repair performed 3 times, based on their decision to extend their own service bulletins. Clearly they have decided to use the same faulty part repeatedly. NHTSA needs to step in and tell them to continue repairing the defective part until all of these vehicles are off the road.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: 1G1ZS52F15F
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This problem has occurred many times and I have taken to the internet to find out what I could to try to remedy it myself as I don't have endless disposable income to have someone else fix it. I have not had it seen by a professional, only consulted with a manager of a gm dealership repairs department over the phone as well as various mechanics and locksmiths. As I said I don't have endless disposable money to throw at this. The car will completely shut off in the middle of driving, I lose all power. The antitheft system engages in the middle of driving. Then I get no crank no start. I get stuck in the middle of the road. In the past I was able to just turn the key off and remove it and let it sit for a while and then it would let me start it again, this began a year ago and has gotten progressively worse and more frequent since it first occurred and I am now at the point where the car is completely no crank no start and anti theft system will not disengage. From my own research online I've found many others complaining of similar problems and they say it's related to gm passlock system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-21
  • VIN: 1G1ZS62835F
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car's anti-theft system (indicated on the dashboard lights) will randomly lock up the engine. Following a massive list of online suggestions from other Chevy owners who had the same problem, I learned to wait for 10-15 minutes with the key in the ignition (lights/radio on, no engine) before the anti-theft indicator disappears and the car can start again. Sometimes, I will have to repeat the process 2-3 times. This has been happening randomly for over 2 years despite taking it into a Chevy dealer for repairs twice. They claimed it was a battery issue and charged me over $500 to fix nothing; The engine would lock up again within a month. A cursory Google search shows that this has affected hundreds if not thousands of GM vehicles, some even claiming the anti-theft lock engaged while they were driving. Please put some serious investigation into the matter so people like me can stop getting price gouged and stuck in freezing weather for GM's incompetence.

  • Summary: In January 2022, I started to lose the power steering my 2005 Chevy Malibu. After much research, I have learned that Chevrolet installed EPS systems on the 2004-2007 Malibus. I found there has been a recall on the failure of this system. I contacted our local Chevrolet dealership in April 2022 to learn there is a mileage stipulation on the recall. Presently this is my only mode of transportation, which loses the power steering ability while driving. I am a Disabled Senior on a fixed income, therefore, leaving me with a crippled vehicle. I purchased this pre-owned vehicle in 2012, with the intention of not buying another one. I would like assistance with the repair on my Malibu.

2005 Chevrolet Malibu recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu.

2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
  • Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
2014-05-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
  • Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

  1. Lennie Mayert 2024-09-19

I've had to replace the steering rack, front exhaust, sun visors, ignition switch, and all four tires on my car. Thankfully, it's still under warranty.

  2. Joshuah Wunsch 2024-09-01

I have owned this car for three years and unfortunately, I will not be purchasing another American-made vehicle again. From day one, the car has had a clunking issue similar to my previous Envoy, which I traded in. Despite replacing almost everything, the directional bulbs continue to blow out on a weekly basis. It is quite frustrating to constantly need to replace them. Additionally, the shifter for the lower gears is currently not functioning. These issues are not ideal, especially during tough economic times when repair bills can be a burden.

  3. Jaron Schowalter 2024-08-24

This car has had several issues since I purchased it brand new, including the rack and pinion being replaced twice, two bald tires due to bad alignment, randomly turning on heated seats, a non-functional radio switch on the steering wheel, and broken seat brackets on the driver's seat. Despite the car only having 34000 miles on it, GM did not show any concern for my safety and claimed it was no longer under warranty. Additionally, the fake leather interior is prone to showing spots and water drops that are difficult to clean. Finally, opening the back windows on the highway causes a tunnel sound in your ears. However, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and ensure that this car runs smoothly and safely going forward.

  4. Jose Romaguera 2024-08-15

I have owned several cars in the past, including 2 Mazdas, an Altima, and a CR-V. While this car saved us money, I must say that it has not lived up to my expectations in terms of build quality. After 28k miles, I have noticed several interior rattles, a mushy brake pedal and suspension, and overboosted steering. Additionally, the doors don't stay open by themselves even on the slightest incline. However, I believe that this car has potential. If you're looking for a car in this price range, you may want to consider the Impala instead, as it has better features.

  5. Edwin Reichert 2024-07-09

I leased this car in April of 2004. Although I really like its looks, I have had some issues with the build quality. Unfortunately, I have experienced some problems such as the heater not working for a couple of days, the temperature gauge working intermittently, and sporadic valve noise. Additionally, I have noticed more interior rattles than my 1990 towncar had. It can also be a bit difficult to start, especially when it's hot outside. It's important to note that these issues have occurred despite the car only having 5200 miles on it.

Positive 2005 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

  1. Myrl Durgan 2024-11-20

We all expect the best, and this Malibu has performed much better than average. I do have one complaint, though. The mileage odometer is off and reads about 103+ miles for every 100. Chevrolet says this is not unreasonable and won't fix it. On the bright side, I have had turn signal bulbs burn out, but I replaced them with heavy-duty ones and have had no problems since.

  2. Bernhard Hessel 2024-11-14

Car performs well, with the four-cylinder engine performing just as well as the V6 engine. Fuel economy is excellent. While the front seat area is slightly smaller than previous model years, and the back seat is smaller too, the added features such as info are nice to have. Overall, the car is excellent. The new design is great and looks fantastic.

  3. William Fisher 2024-10-17

I'm thrilled with my Malibu! As someone with arthritis, I really appreciate how easy it is to get in and out of the driver's side thanks to the adjustments made to all the hand and foot controls. As an old Chevy truck manager for a dealership in Long Island, NY, I'm delighted that GM has included so many convenient features for comfort and easy handling.

  4. Deonte Koelpin 2024-08-27

I drive my 2005 Chevrolet Malibu with a 3.5 Liter V6 in the city and I am currently getting 30 miles to the gallon, which is great! When I go on road trips, I get about 39 miles per gallon on the freeway, which is even better! I bought it thinking it would get 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway, but I am pleasantly surprised at the great mileage I get, especially with the high gas prices. By the way, I love the feeling of accelerating quickly off the line!

  5. Christopher Maggio 2024-08-21

I bought this car for safety and fuel economy reasons, but it's much more than that. It's a blast to drive! The acceleration is impressive, and it gets an impressive 30 miles/gallon combined and 40 miles/gallon on the highway if you don't have a heavy foot. The electric power assist steering is fantastic. However, we recently received a 'voluntary customer satisfaction' notice in the mail regarding a sensor issue in the steering wheel. Some units may require a steering wheel replacement, but this is a warranty item, and they will test and replace it if necessary until 1/31/06. The Saab Chassis provides excellent handling and ride quality. Overall, it's a fantastic car.
