2013 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

Common 2013 Subaru Forester problems

The 2013 Subaru Forester has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the most frequently reported issues in detail:

  • Noise from Rear Wheels: Another common problem reported by owners is a noise coming from the rear wheels, usually occurring around 85,000 miles. This issue is caused by worn-out wheel bearings, which require replacement. The cost of replacing wheel bearings is around $200, and the process is relatively straightforward.
  • Broken Dashboard: Owners have also reported a broken dashboard, particularly the components that crack due to exposure to direct sunlight. Some owners opt for a dash cover, which costs under $100, while others choose to replace the entire dashboard, which can cost around $1,000.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are a common problem in the 2013 Subaru Forester, particularly in the engine. These leaks can be caused by various factors, and the repair cost depends on the source of the leak. Regular maintenance and checking for leaks are essential to prevent more severe engine problems.
  • Head Gasket Leaks: At higher mileage, the head gaskets may leak, leading to expensive repairs. One possible sign of a leaking head gasket is a coolant smell from the engine compartment and the dropping coolant level.
  • Timing Chain Issues: The timing chains can go bad in the FB-25 engine at higher mileage, leading to engine problems and potentially costly repairs.
  • Fuel Efficiency: The Forester's fuel efficiency is lower compared to some other compact SUVs, which can be a concern for owners who prioritize fuel economy.
  • Resale Value: The Forester tends to lose its resale value quicker than some rivals, which may impact its long-term value for owners.
  • Engine Reliability: The Forester will need engine repairs in its lifetime, some of which could be expensive. This means that it will be more costly to keep on the road at higher mileage.
  • Interior Quality: While functional, the Forester's interior materials and design are less refined compared to some competitors in its class.

In summary, the 2013 Subaru Forester has several common problems, primarily related to the engine, such as excessive oil consumption, oil leaks, and head gasket leaks. Other issues include noise from the rear wheels, broken dashboards, timing chain problems, fuel efficiency, resale value, engine reliability, and interior quality. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent more severe problems and keep the Forester running smoothly.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-28
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2SHADC1DH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The contact owned a 2013 Subaru Forester. The contact stated that while idled in reverse with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle accelerated in reverse on its own, colliding with a deck, after which the vehicle shifted into drive and continued to accelerate on its own, colliding with a brick wall, only then coming to a complete stop after colliding with a tree. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was not filed, and injuries were reported. The contact reported an injury to her left eye but did not seek treatment. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and a technician was sent to inspect the vehicle. The failure mileage was 66,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-31
  • VIN: JF2SHADC5DH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 7/31/23 I was driving on the highway when I started to hear a knocking sound. I got off the highway and my car stalled at the light off the exit. I was able to restart it after three tries and get it about 50 ft to the shoulder. At that point there was smoke coming from under the hood. I called AAA and had it towed to a nearby garage. They told me it had to go to the dealer because it likely needed a new engine. They said that the oil had mixed with the antifreeze. The dealer stated it needed a new engine. It was a catastrophic engine failure. I never had any warning (no panel lights ever illuminated) of any issue with the oil or engine issues. I feel very lucky that I did not have an accident due to this sudden failure. The cost of the repairs is estimated between $9,000 and $15,000 on a vehicle that is supposed to last 250K. It currently has 98K miles on it. My biggest complaint is there was never any warning of this. I feel that is a failure of the electronic system that should have alerted me of engine issues and a defective engine. I also filed a complaint with Subaru but have not heard from them yet.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-23
  • VIN: JF2SHABC6DH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving, the engine suddenly went dead with no warning. No lights came on no over heating signal, no warnings. Just gone. I could have been killed in other circumstances. Fortunately, I was going down hill in the slow lane and was able to get at least partially off the road. Subaru said the engine had no oil! This should not be possible with no warning and the good care and maintenance I have given the car. I just learned that Subaru settled a class action law suit for this exact problem. This is extremely dangerous and very common. Yet, Subaru did not let me know and will not do anything about it. How many others are in danger?

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-28
  • VIN: JF2SHAAC2DG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: When the clutch is depressed the engine kills without indication anything is happening. All the dash lights come on and the power steering goes out. It has been happening repeatedly since last June. More frequently over time. If it happens on an off ramp or at an intersection the engine will not start for up to 5 minutes creating a safety hazard.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-06
  • VIN: JF2SHAEC4DH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My 2013 Subaru Forester had some noise (grinding) from the rear passenger side brake pad. I set up an appointment to have it inspected later that week. I then used my car to run an errand several days later. I was driving on the highway and found I had no brakes (brake pedal went to the floor). I was able to get to a parking lot and stop the car. When I exited the vehicle, I went to the right (passenger side) rear wheel and noticed brake fluid was on the pavement. This is concerning as the brake system should have redundancy (front brakes still work if the rear does not or vice versa). I had no brake pressure. I was told by the Subaru dealer that the brake pad had broken and fallen out, and in so doing the piston "went too far out" and brake fluid leaked as a result. This to me should not have eliminated all braking power for the vehicle. I was lucky to have been able to stop and get to a parking lot safely.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-23
  • VIN: JF2SHADC5DH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE THAT CLAIMS TO BE REPAIRED- THE IGNITION TURNING OFF WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAPPENED A FEW MINUTES AGO WHILE DRIVING 65+ ON THE FREEWAY AND WE WERE ALMOST HIT BY AN 18 WHEELER BECAUSE OF IT. ZERO POWER WHATSOEVER. I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND TURN THE KEY A FEW TIMES AND RESTART IT. AFTERWARDS, THE CHECK ENGINE, STABILITY CONTROL, TIRE PRESSURE, SEATBELT LIGHTS ARE ALL ON, CRUISE CONTROL IS FLASHING (I DON'T USE CRUISE). I DON'T KNOW HOW THE INCLUDED PICTURE HELPS. I FEEL LIKE THIS ISSUE WAS EITHER ABSOLUTELY NOT ADDRESSED, OR IF IT WAS, THE REPAIR HAS DEFINITELY FAILED. EITHER WAY, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO BECAUSE THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE, MY KIDS HAVE TO RIDE IN IT AND I CAN'T TRUST IT NOT TO KILL EVERYONE NOW.

  • Summary: ON 4/3/21 AT APPROXIMATELY 1:30 PM, THE 2013 SUBARU FORRESTER WAS SLOWLY BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE, GEAR WAS IN REVERSE, FOOT ON ACCELERATOR WITH SPEED OF <1 MPH; JUST ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO GET CAR OUT OF GARAGE, DOWN DRIVEWAY AND ONTO THE STREET. WHILE STILL IN REVERSE, THE CAR WAS POSITIONED ONTO THE STREET TO DRIVE FORWARD IN AN EASTWARD DIRECTION. BEFORE THE GEARSHIFT COULD BE MOVED FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE (FOOT WAS NOT ON ACCELERATOR AT THE TIME), THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY SURGED BACKWARDS ACROSS THE STREET WENT UP AN EMBANKMENT CUTTING INTO NEIGHBOR'S YARD AND HIT A PARKED CAR IN THE NEIGHBOR'S DRIVEWAY AND STOPPED. THE FLOORMAT ON DRIVER'S SIDE LAY FLUSH/FLAT AGAINST THE FLOOR, THERE WAS NO OBSTRUCTION BY THE FLOORMAT OR ANY OBJECT TO THE GAS OR BRAKE PEDAL. DRIVER HAD SEATBELT ON AND SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES (BUMP ON HEAD AND ELBOW, ABRASION FROM SEATBELT, AND BACK PAIN) DUE TO HITTING PARKED CAR. SUBARU HAD TO BE TOWED ON A FLATBED TRUCK. IT LOOKED LIKE THE AXEL WAS BROKEN, RIGHT FRONT TIRE AND LEFT REAR TIRE WERE MISALIGNED, AND DAMAGE TO REAR BUMPER. SEE PHOTOS

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-01
  • VIN: JF2SHADC8DH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO COMPLAINT NUMBER 11387558. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER..THE CAR WAS GETTING WORSE WITH SHAKING, SHUDDERING AND STALLING. THEY REPLACED THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND CHARGED ME $1,029.25. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME SUBARU HAS HAD TROUBLE WITH THEIR 2010-2013 MODELS ESPECIALLY THE OUTBACKS. HE SAID THIS IS A FIRST WITH THE FORESTER I HAVE AND HE HAS BEEN THERE FOR 9 YEARS. HE ADVISED ME TO CONTACT SUBARU AND SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP ME OUT. I CALLED AND THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE ME FOR THE TOTAL COST OF THE REPLACEMENT. THEY ONLY OFFERED A PARTIAL "GOODWILL REIMBURSEMENT" OF 350.00 SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE SINCE I ONLY HAVE 56,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THEY NEED TO RECALL THEIR CARS THAT HAVE THIS DEFECTIVE TORQUE CONVERTER IN THEM. THEY ARE LIABLE WARRANTY OR NO WARRANTY. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT I DID NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT.

IT ALSO WANTS TO STALL OUT WHEN I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP-IT WILL SHUDDER AND SHAKE AND CATCH ITSELF AT TIMES BUT IT USUALLY STALLS OUT. IT WILL STALL OUT IN TRAFFIC WHEN I AM STOPPING AT A LIGHT. I HAVE TO RESTART THE CAR AND CONTINUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THE TORQUE CONVERTER NEEDS REPLACED FOR 1200.00.

  • Summary: MY FORESTER WILL NOT RELEASE THE KEYS FROM THE IGNITION, EVEN WHEN I AM VERY CAREFUL TO PUT IT IN PARK. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM, AS THEY HAVE A TSB 16-112-18R ABOUT IT. WHEN I CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA, THEY REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CAR IS A 2013 MODEL, EVEN THOUGH IT ONLY HAS 36,000 MILES ON IT. THEY INSTEAD PROVIDED A COUPON FOR $250 TOWARD THE REPAIR. I CLEARLY CANNOT GO ANYWHERE WITH THE CAR IN THIS CONDITION, AS IT REQUIRES LEAVING THE CAR UNLOCKED WITH THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION. THIS HAPPENED WHEN I PULLED INTO MY GARAGE LAST EVENING. I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT IN A LOCATION WHERE I HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-15
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2SHAEC2DH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: AS I BEGAN TO BACK MY BOSSES CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, I LOOKED OUT OF MY LEFT MIRROR TO FOLLOW THE CURVE OF THE DRIVEWAY IN ORDER TO DIRECT ME. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING BEHIND ME, SO I PROCEEDED TO CONTINUE DOWN THE DRIVEWAY, AND THEN I FELT A BUMP. THEN I SAW IN THE CAMERA THAT I MUST HAVE HIT A VAN IN THAT WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE BACK DOORS OF THE VAN WERE OPEN. THEN I DECIDED THAT I NEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND PARK MY CAR SO I COULD GET OUT AND MAKE SURE I DIDN'T HURT ANYONE. AS I PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE, IT MADE A LOUD WINDING NOISE AND LURCHED FORWARD. IT THEN PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE AND PICK UP SPEED IN THE DRIVEWAY. AS I BECAME PARALLEL WITH THE OTHER VEHICLE PARKED IN THE OWNERS DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE I WAS DRIVING WAS STILL PICKING UP SPEED SO I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND PUT ON THE BRAKES SO I COULD STOP THE VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH WITHIN SECONDS I WAS CRASHING THROUGH THE BACK YARD FENCE. THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED TO PICK UP SPEED. I WAS PUTTING A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES BUT IT WAS NOT MAKING ANY DIFFERENCE. I THOUGHT OF SWERVING THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT, BUT I WAS AFRAID OF THERE BEING CHILDREN IN THE OTHER YARD SO I QUICKLY MADE THE DECISION TO HIT THE TREE SO I COULD SPARE ANY POSSIBLE LIVES AND STOP THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY. AS SOON AS I REALIZED I CRASHED THE VEHICLE INTO THE TREE, I IMMEDIATELY GOT OUT SO I COULD SEE WHAT HAPPENED. I KEPT REPEATING TO MYSELF 'WHY DIDN'T IT STOP?' I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND AFTER DOING EVERYTHING IN MY MIND TO STOP THE CAR, THAT NOTHING WAS SUCCESSFUL. I DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE BEST DECISION AS MUCH AS I COULD WITHIN THOSE CHAOTIC MOMENTS. I JUST WANTED TO STOP THE CAR AND NOT HARM IN PEOPLE IN THE PROCESS. I HIT THE TREE AT WITH ENOUGH VELOCITY THAT THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND I BROKE MY LEG IN 3 PLACES. Negative 2013 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Theo Abbott 2024-11-27

The Subaru Forester Limited 2013 has been causing me back pain since I purchased it, despite the fact that it felt great during the test drive. Despite Consumer Reports stating that the power leather seats would be more comfortable, I have found them to be disappointing. In contrast, the seats in my previous car, a 2000 Lexus ES 300, were extremely comfortable. I am confident that there are better options available that will provide the comfort and support I need for my daily 84-mile commute.

  2. Antwan Douglas 2024-08-03

I have a 2013 Forester with low mileage that has served me well. However, I have experienced some issues after reaching 65k miles. The front motor mounts caused my wheel to shake at stop lights, and the front suspension needed attention. Recently, the plastic radiator top cracked and caused fluid to spill all over the engine. Additionally, the compressor needed to be replaced. It is important to note that some of the plastic parts are not very durable, such as the sunglass holder and the knob to the gas lid. Despite these issues, I still believe that the Forester is a rugged and safe automobile. Unfortunately, the rear windshield wiper has had a burned-out engine since 20k miles. It may be time for me to consider purchasing a new car.

  3. Scot Block 2024-06-10

I bought my Subaru back in February 2013. It's a great car for driving in poor conditions, as I found out when I drove it through three snowstorms. I highly recommend getting the winter package, which includes heated seats and windows. However, in regular conditions, the Subaru can be a bit disappointing. The engine is geared towards city driving, which I personally enjoy, but on the highway, it can be quite noisy and lacks pickup. Once it's up to speed, it's fine though. In terms of gas mileage, I haven't been able to get more than 21mpg in mixed driving. As for handling, it's good for city driving, but at highway speeds, the steering wheel vibration can be quite pronounced. From what I've read on the forums, this seems to be a common issue with Foresters. Overall, it's a competent vehicle, if a bit boring.

  4. Favian Deckow 2024-05-16

I like many things about this car, but unfortunately, the interior quality is a major issue. Within just 4 weeks of owning it, I had to purchase aftermarket seat covers due to the poorly sewn seats. I was concerned they wouldn't hold up to normal usage. Even my dog standing on the front seat console caused a hole, which was surprising as he had stood on the same thing in my Jeep for years without leaving a mark. Additionally, the plastic was easily scratched by my keys and my dog's feet left a scratch on the dash. It's challenging to use the car without causing damage to the interior. In contrast, my Chevy Truck and Jeep Cherokee have endured the same usage without any damage. Despite these issues, I remain hopeful that the car is mechanically sound.

  5. Darion Little 2024-04-18

The car was good for the first half year, but then there was a recall for the brake lines due to corrosion. Although it was a bit inconvenient, I was able to live with it. However, after 1.5 years, micro dots of rust started to appear. I put some wax on it and was able to manage. Around 70,000 miles, the alternator went out, but I was able to replace it. At 75,000 miles, the front axle bearing started making a cracking noise, but it was an easy fix. Unfortunately, after 8 years and 85,000 miles, the car body started to show real rust. Despite reaching out to Subaru of America, they were unable to help. If you're looking for a car that will last more than 5 years, I would recommend avoiding Subaru. It's a shame to have spent $26,000+ on a car that didn't last as long as I had hoped.

Positive 2013 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Zander Monahan 2024-11-29

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that this car is great for all kinds of driving, especially in the snow! Have a great day!

  2. Malcolm Runolfsson 2024-11-23

Starting the engine can be difficult at times.

  3. Leo Tromp 2024-11-20

I purchased a used 2013 Forester with only 13,000 miles on it. The car is quite spacious, looks beautiful and is pretty good on gas, averaging 24.6 mpg (although I can get up to 30 mpg on the highway). However, being only 5' tall, I have had some difficulty reaching the brake pedal and the seat doesn't go high enough for me. I have also experienced some discomfort in my hands due to the width of the steering wheel. Additionally, I have had some lower back pain, sciatica pain, and cramps and soreness in my feet from stretching to reach the pedals. Although I have tried using pillows and a lumbar support, I still experience some discomfort. I have also found that the lack of shade darkening on the top of the front windshield causes my legs to burn up. While there are some things I like about the car, I have decided that it is not the right fit for me and I would not purchase another Subaru. I have found that it does not handle well and I am unimpressed with the all-wheel drive. I miss my Jeep and have decided to trade in the Forester for a Jeep Patriot with roughly the same mileage. I am very happy with my decision and love my Jeep!

  4. Isai Waelchi 2024-11-05

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 Subaru Forester. I've had it since February 2013, when my 1999 Subaru Legacy stopped running. I've been using non-ethanol gasoline and have been getting between 27-29.2 MPG since I purchased the car. It has plenty of room and enough acceleration for normal and daily driving. However, I was a bit disappointed that Subaru does not offer a limited/leather model with a 5-speed transmission. I ultimately decided to buy a 2013 over a 2014 because I'm not yet convinced of the long-term driveability of the new CVT transmission. Thank you for listening to my experience!

  5. Cecil Waelchi 2024-10-29

Pros - This vehicle runs great and is highly reliable. It also has good off-road capability and provides pretty good highway comfort. Additionally, it's a lot of fun to drive. Cons - While the gas mileage isn't great with the 4A transmission, it's still a great vehicle. However, it's worth noting that there isn't much rear seat room and not a lot of front seat leg room if you are 6 ft. or taller.
