2006 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 2006 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu, produced between 1999 and 2006, has been known to have several common problems, affecting the engine, transmission, and electrical system. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Transmission Failure:
The transmission system in Chevrolet Malibus often begins to experience trouble around the 100,000-mile mark. This is typically characterized by hefty jerking and difficulty changing gears.
  • Electrical System Glitches:
Electrical system issues have been prevalent throughout the production years of the Chevrolet Malibu. While some problems may seem minor, such as CD players not working in 2005 models, they play a significant role in assessing the car's performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Interior Accessory Faults:
Chevrolet Malibu owners have reported issues with interior accessories, such as the automatic transmission shifter. In some cases, the key gets stuck, which has been tied to an issue with the automatic transmission shifter. This problem is often solved by replacing the ignition lock cylinder.
  • Electronic "Shift to Park" System Failure:
Newer Chevy Malibu models, particularly those released between 2016 and 2020, have experienced electrical issues within their electronic "Shift to Park" system. This system is known to fail and be unable to recognize when the car is in park, preventing drivers from turning their cars off.

These common problems with the Chevrolet Malibu, produced between 1999 and 2006, have been reported by owners and can significantly impact the vehicle's performance, reliability, and safety. Proper maintenance and care can help mitigate some of these issues, but it is crucial for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems before making a purchase decision.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 1G1ZT53F96F
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Opened my trunk two days ago and the carpet on the driver side was soaked, as well as the carpeted panel that covers the spare tire. The panel is warped and moldy. I removed my spare tire, to find that my jack was completely rusted out, along with a pool of water in the bottom of my trunk. I then put my back seats down and could see the metal beneath them was also rusted out. Apparently, it’s been leaking for some time. I then proceeded to clean the rest of my car out, and found my rear and front driver side floor boards were also soaked. I do not know where any of the water is coming from but I believe it’s causing electrical components to fail in my vehicle, such as: Doors won’t lock or unlock using the lock switch inside the car Driver door won’t look or unlock using switch inside car or remote Power mirrors only move up and down, not side to side Half of the controls on radio don’t work and it doesn’t display all the info that should be available Radio does not turn off after turning off ignition and opening driver door and removing key Power outlets stay on after car is off

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-26
  • VIN: 1G1ZT51FX6F
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The electric power steering went out while I was driving. I will not be able to send the part in for inspection until it gets replaced. My safety and others were at risk because it made it really difficult to change lanes which could've resulted in a crash. The problem hasn't been reproduced on my vehicle specifically, but has been produced on enough vehicles to have a recall issued. There weren't any warnings prior to the power steering going out. Just a beep and a warning on the radio display as it went out. My vehicle was manufactured in May of 2006 but want recalled, although the affected vehicles were made from April - June 2006. This is the second one that has gone out on me and there is still no recall for my vehicle. First one happened October of 2020, got it fixed then the second one went out November of 2023.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-01
  • VIN: 1G1ZT51FX6F
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Electric Power Steering - 10/2020 Suddenly went out while driving. No warnings beforehand. This made sharp turns extremely difficult. It says that my car is not part of the recall, but is still as dangerous as the vehicles that were part of the recall. From the research that I have done, the motor seems to be in good working order. The sensor is what seems to be the issue. Cruise Control - 08/2023 Goes out randomly. I was on the freeway when it turned off by itself. If I was not paying attention, this could've caused an accident. No warning beforehand. Brake Switch - 06/2023 Seems to be something wrong with the switch. The brake light stays on after braking. Turn Signal Switch - 10/2020 Does not cancel after turning right. This can potentially confuse other drivers. Fuel Pump - 10/2020 The float of the fuel pump is not working. It says it is empty, even after filling it up. It will occasionally show that the tank is all of the way filled during rapid acceleration. This could make me run out of fuel while driving if I lose track of mileage; which could result in an accident. None of the components have been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer. The Electric Power Steering and turn signal are available to be inspected. Again there were no indicators before failure. I do know that there are recalls on other vehicles with the same issues, but for some reason mine was excluded. Some of these occurred before the dates stated, but these dates are when I remember them affecting me the most.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-16
  • VIN: 1G1ZT61866F
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There are many recalls for the year make and model of my vehicle. They just didn't recall my exact vin. The breaks are recalled, air bags were recalled and they were buying back the vehicles, the fuel delivery system was recalled, headlights were recalled, cruise control was recalled, steering column and yoke was recalled, and a few more. None were recalled for my vin number when it should have been. I took my car to the dealership today, Chevrolet did a few things under "warranty" instead of issuing a safety recall. (They issued 10 recalls on this year make and model) (one recall was the air bags, my vehicle is doing the same thing). The fuel delivery system and fuel pump was recalled but not on my vin number. I just really need help getting my car repaired. I cannot afford to fix all of this when there's records dating back to the purchase of the vehicle, showing that there are problems and Chevrolet neglectfully didn't recall it and instead tried to brush it off as a warranty instead of safety recall. My car leaks gas, the steering it messed up, headlights no longer work due to the electrical issue, the instrument cluster was damaged due to the ecm issue, there's just so many problems... My car could potentially catch fire for the fuel leak, carbon monoxide smell, electrical wiring and the air bags could potentially deploy.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-07
  • VIN: 1G1ZW63196F
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I had my 5 year old in the back seat we had just left gymnastics. I was about to pull out on to state route 87 and my car just stops running. Everything shut down, no power steering, was hard to brake, and engine stopped. The dashboard lit up with all the lights anti-theft, oil, traction control, engine. I couldn't get it to turn over and when I tried it made no noise at all. I was in a dangerous spot about to pull out into oncoming traffic. Luckily there was a gentleman in a truck whose child was also at gymnastics and pulled me into a driveway with his truck to keep me and my child safe as we waited on a tow. This car also started having power steering problems early this year, I took it to a good mechanic who replaced the power steering lines and fixed what ever could be causing a leak/ power steering problems. I don't drive my car a lot, just in town usually, and after a few weeks the power steering is all messed up again (which there is a recall on the power steering issue for this year, make, and model but does not appear to include my VIN). Today this scary and dangerous incident mentioned above, when my car just stopped with no warning, happened to me and my five year old.

2006 Chevrolet Malibu recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu.

2015-02-04
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.
2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
  • Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
2014-05-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
  • Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.

Negative 2006 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

  1. Graham Kassulke 2025-01-06

I bought a car for my wife since her 1996 Ford Taurus was on its last leg. We decided to go for a used Malibu, which seemed like a great option compared to what we had and at a decent price. Unfortunately, after just one month, we noticed a knock in the steering when turning the wheel parked or at low speeds. This is a very common problem in many Chevy trucks as well. The dealership did a quick fix, but unfortunately, the issue reappeared just two months later. Now, if we want peace of mind with a real fix, it will cost us $500. In my opinion, Chevrolet has gone downhill with their products over the last 10 years. I would not recommend buying this car unless you have no other choice. The only good quality about it is the great power from the engine.

I purchased this car two years ago and I am still financing it. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the car since it hit 30,000 miles. The electronic power steering has failed every two months, causing the car to lock up and shut down, nearly resulting in several accidents. Additionally, the brakes have needed replacement every three to six months, and the windshield leaks when it rains. The tires that came with the car were also quite loud. Despite paying $13,000 for the car, it has not met my expectations and I am now looking to sell it. Do you have any suggestions on how to get out of the loan when the car is worth less than the remaining balance?

  3. Sylvester Rolfson 2024-09-20

I purchased this car brand new and unfortunately, I have had a few issues with it. The service department has been incredibly helpful and accommodating throughout the process. While some of the problems have been frustrating, I understand that they are not the fault of the service department as they did not design or build the car. I have had several parts replaced, including the struts, strut mounts, rack and pinion, steering column sleeve, visor, radio, and AC fan motor. Additionally, the car tends to drift to the left and is quite loud with road noise. The brakes are also showing some signs of wear. I have not yet taken it back in for these issues. Despite these problems, I have been a loyal Chevy customer and this is my third Malibu. Thank you for your help with this matter.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Malibu. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it, including 2 oil leaks and a blown head gasket, all within a year of owning it. I'm currently in the process of searching for a new car because I can't afford to keep up with these problems. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  5. Merl Hand 2024-08-14

I leased a 2006 Malibu in July of 06 and have only put 18,000 miles on it so far. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the transmission, suspension, steering, windshield, and CD player. Even the interior trim was gouged by a cardboard box! It's been a bit disappointing, especially since I initially liked the exterior styling and price. However, I recently purchased a second car from Nissan that is vastly superior in quality and was the same price. Overall, I wish my experience with the Malibu had been better, but I'm happy to have found a car that meets my needs.

  1. Garrett Swaniawski 2025-01-07

This gem was the end result of a trade-in after a recent purchase of a mini-van. I can't say enough about this car! It's super reliable and low maintenance, with a great interior and exterior. It has a spoiler, sunroof, remote start, aluminum rims with 18” tires, 6-disk CD changer with XM radio, cruise control, leather/cloth seats, leather steering wheel, and room for 5. It's a great car for any age - sporty and family-friendly, with a great and fun drive. It's also super comfortable, and gets 23-mpg city and 29-mpg highway driving 65 mph. I would buy this Super Sport again and again!

  2. Paxton Hodkiewicz 2024-11-12

It's great to hear that you're still enjoying your 2006 Malibu after all these years! It's always a relief when a car runs smoothly and doesn't give you any major issues. It's also smart to have an extended warranty, which has clearly paid for itself. Thanks for sharing your positive experience and I hope your Malibu continues to serve you well!

  3. Stanford Volkman 2024-10-23

This is a fantastic new ride that offers a great value for your money. While Ted may dream of getting 30-40mpg with a 3.9L V6, Chevrolet rates it at 18-23 or so. However, with the help of after market parts, you might be able to get another 10-15% out of it. It's important to note that this is a comfortable ride with a lot of power under the hood, but it does consume a fair amount of gas.

  4. Willis Schmitt 2024-10-22

I love the interior design of the vehicle, especially the use of chrome and the look of the gauge cluster. Although the exterior may look a little boxy, it is still a great car overall. I am particularly impressed with the MPG so far.

  5. Jamey Schamberger 2024-09-12

We're thrilled with the quality and performance of our new vehicle. While we haven't had the chance to compare it to earlier models, we're really happy with the interior design and seats. The heated seats are a great feature for chilly weather, and we love being able to start the car remotely.
