The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

  • Transmission Problems: The Toyota Corolla 2001 has been reported to have transmission problems, including transmission failure and slow engine startup.

  • Musty Smell Inside Car: Many drivers have reported a musty smell coming from inside the car, which is caused by a blocked evaporator housing drain pipe.
  • Car Vibrates at High Speeds: The Toyota Corolla 2001 can vibrate when driving at about 60-70mph, which is caused by the handbrake being over tightened.
  • Jerky Acceleration: The car can have jerky acceleration when pulling away, which is caused by a malfunctioning fuel pump.
  • High Revs and Clutch Slip: The car can experience high revs when pulling away, and the clutch can occasionally slip, which is caused by a problem with the clutch, usually due to aggressive driving over a long period of time.
  • Clanging Noise: A clanging sound can be heard from the front of the car while driving, which is caused by worn-out bushes in the front.

Negative Toyota Corolla 2001 car reviews

I bought this car because my boss owns one and says how great it is. However, I have had some issues with it. Firstly, I have found that there is not enough room for people with long legs. Additionally, I have noticed that the 1998-2002 models tend to burn oil quickly due to a poor piston ring design that allows oil into the combustion chamber. This means that I have to add a quart of oil every week. There is also a bearing in the transmission that can fail easily, causing the car to shake violently at highway speeds. Furthermore, the struts and strut plates can break easily, and the front tie rods are flimsy and can break even with slight contact with a curb. However, it is worth noting that pre-1998 and post-2002 Corollas are better, with the exception of 2009. If you are looking for a reliable car, I would recommend considering a Honda instead.

My first car was a 1992 Toyota Corolla. It was a great car, so good that I decided to buy a new 2001 Corolla S. However, soon after purchasing and looking up the VIN, I noticed that the vehicle was one of the first made by GM. Unfortunately, I experienced some problems with the car. Firstly, by 2000 miles, all four tires were bald, and Toyota refused to cover the replacement. Secondly, at 32k miles, the transmission bearing failed, and I had to get a new transmission. It took three weeks, and I didn't have a car or a loaner because I was too young. Thirdly, at 33k miles, after parking the car, the engine refused to start. After about 20 minutes of cranking, it started with smoke, no power, and about 10 different noises. I had to get the engine replaced, and it took three weeks without a car. Fourthly, at 80k miles, the transmission bearing failed again, and I had to replace the transmission, which cost me $2300 out of pocket. Finally, at 120k miles, two days after calling the dealer to have the timing chain replaced, the dealer refused, citing that it is a timing chain and does not need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the timing chain snapped, and the head bent. I traded in the broken Corolla and purchased a new 2007 Civic, which is the best car I ever had.

I purchased the car with 75k miles on it. Despite the engine blowing just 9 months later, I replaced it. Unfortunately, the car caught fire in the engine area while driving home after only 3k miles. However, I must say that the car was an awesome and fun experience to drive, with a very cool interior. My experience with the car may have been plagued with bad luck, but I am confident in my ability to handle any situation that may arise.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you bought your CE back in May 2001 and it has 18500 on the odometer. It sounds like it's a fun car to drive, although you mentioned that the AC can make it feel a bit sluggish. I'm glad to hear that it gets good mileage and has a smooth engine. It's a shame that the CE is only a 3-speed automatic, but it seems to handle well once you get over 30. I can understand how the steering might feel a bit scary on the highway, especially if there are large lorries nearby. It's good to know that the interior is comfortable for four small adults or two tall adults, although I can see how it might feel a bit cramped. I also understand that the lack of a rear folding seat can be a bit inconvenient and expensive to add. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the CE!

My Corolla has been experiencing issues with the engine light coming on and a P30 error code indicating random misfiring in the cylinders. Despite having it serviced twice, the issue has persisted and the engine light has come on for a third time, causing the car to run rough. As a confident owner of a Toyota Corolla CE, I expect the highest level of reliability and service, and I am disappointed that these expectations have not been met.

Positive Toyota Corolla 2001 car reviews

Overall, it is an excellent car.

  2. Manley Legros 2024-11-26

Toyota has definitely lived up to your expectations! It's great to hear that you did your research and compared with other manufacturers before settling on Toyota. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with Toyota, having driven one since 1998. It's unfortunate that you had to experience severe financial hardship with GM and Ford due to repair costs. As for the Corolla, it's a shame that the driver's seat cannot be adjusted higher or lower, but overall it sounds like a great car!

I have had several cars over the years, but this Toyota Corolla LE is the best car ever! I have only needed to do regular maintenance, such as oil changes and new tires, since I bought it. In the past, I have had terrible luck with all my cars, even though I maintained them as the manual instructed. I have bought both new and used cars, but none have been as reliable and low-maintenance as my Corolla.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that we bought this car back in June 2001 and we've put 37,000 miles on it so far. The best part? We haven't had a single problem with it! Isn't that great?

  5. Preston Simonis 2024-06-28

This car is really fun to drive with a stick shift! It's quick, reliable, and good on gas. While it may be bumpy and noisy due to its small size, it's important to remember that you're not buying a luxury car like a Lexus. Although it may be a little expensive for its size, you're paying for the Toyota name and its assumed quality. It's worth noting that for not much more money, you could get a Camry. I have noticed that the brakes have become progressively more spongey as I've driven it (28k as of now). On the bright side, I've been rear-ended twice (once pretty hard) and there was zero damage except for some scrapes. If you change your own oil, be aware that the filter is hard to get at and messy to remove.
