2015 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.
Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.
The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2015 Toyota Highlander problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2015 Toyota Highlander, several common problems have been reported:
- Squeaky Brakes: The brakes on the 2015 Highlander tend to develop an annoying squeal, particularly when using semi-metallic pads. This issue is less common with stock ceramic pads.
- Uncomfortable Seats: Multiple reports indicate that the seats in the 2015 Highlander are uncomfortable and ergonomically bad, causing unpleasant experiences, especially during long-distance journeys. Complaints about premature leather wear have also been noted.
- Loss of Power Steering: Toyota has recalled certain 2015 Highlanders due to potential damage to the electric power steering control unit during manufacturing. This issue may lead to a failure of the power steering system, affecting over 100,000 units.
- Excessive Wind Noise: Some owners have reported excessive wind noise in the 2015 Highlander, attributed to a design flaw related to the outside rearview mirrors. This noise can be more pronounced at higher speeds, causing annoyance to some drivers.
- Infotainment System Glitches: The Highlander has been known to have infotainment bugs, which can be a source of frustration for some owners. While not as common as other issues, these glitches have been reported.
- Faulty Door Locks: Another reported problem is faulty door locks, which have been noted as an issue in some 2015 Highlanders. This can be an inconvenience for owners.
- Electrical Issues: The Highlander has had reports of various electrical faults, including issues with door actuators, rear liftgate malfunctions, and a glitchy infotainment system. These electrical failures have been a source of concern for some owners.
These problems, although present in the 2015 Toyota Highlander, are not widespread and should be considered alongside the vehicle's overall reliability and performance when making a purchasing decision.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5TDBKRFH8FS
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: SPONTANEOUS VEHICLE FIRE: While driving approximately 20-30 miles per hour, with no other symptoms or advance warning signs, a message suddenly appeared on the dashboard saying "Engine Failure - Turn off Ignition". The temperature gauge was firmly in the normal range; the car had been inspected a few months prior, and had recently had routine maintenance. There was no indication that anything was amiss before this incident. 30 seconds after the sudden warning message appeared, smoke began pouring from the hood and I immediately pulled over to the side of the road and exited the vehicle with my young daughter. The smoke continued and the entire front section of the vehicle quickly caught ablaze. Police and the fire department arrived on the scene to assist and extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed and determined to be a total loss by insurance. Our safety was put at risk because our vehicle spontaneously caught fire with no early warning signs; if we had been driving on a highway or a road without space to quickly stop the vehicle and safely exit, we would have certainly faced injury or possible death given the speed and ferocity with which the fire erupted. After we contacted Toyota several times, they sent an inspector to look at the vehicle, and reported: "The inspector observed extensive fire damage to the engine compartment and interior of the vehicle. The inspector also observed that there was no oil registered on the dipstick. There were no arc marks on the wiring in the engine compartment when inspected. The inspector did not observe any oil leaks when inspected. The battery hold down bracket was in the proper location. The cause of the fire was undetermined, and there was no evidence from the inspection to indicate that this incident was a result of a vehicle defect." Toyota has shown a complete lack of curiousity as to determining what could have caused the fire and has only focused on avoiding liability, thereby putting customer safety at risk.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
- Number Of Injuries: 1

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5TDJKRFH0FS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
- Summary: My Highlander had a strange burning smell and we couldn’t find where it was coming from. We took it to a shop where they checked everything over and suggested that the smell was our brakes. They lubricated the brakes and replaced my tires and struts. When I went to pick up the vehicle I still noticed the strange smell, and I had the mechanic come out and check. He suggested that it was the leather conditioner that our detailer had used. I left and headed for home and in about 5 miles the control for the drivers heated seat started smoking and about 30 seconds later the plastic around the control began to melt and flames were coming out of the area next to the control. I was able to use a fire extinguisher to put the fire out. All of the heated seat components were original and we haven’t had any work done to it. The obvious safety concern here would be fire in the cabin of the vehicle while in motion. The fire and sheriffs departments showed up to the scene and the incident report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a shop where we are awaiting insurance adjuster to look at it. There were not any warning lights or signals of any kind; only the smoke very shortly before the visible flames.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-12
- VIN: 5TDYKRFH0FS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: We have a 2019 Toyota Highlander. VIN: [XXX] . There are two issues with this vehicle... 1) Our bumper fell down after an uneventful car wash. We didn't hit anything. Reported it to the car wash place (Ollie's Car Wash in Walker, LA) after we noticed it fell. We had to tie-strap it back up because the clips no longer worked right. This happened August 12, 2023. We have pictures of the damage. 2) A second issue is totally separate from the first. This one has to do with the back lifting door. It often gets stuck to where we have to manually force it closed. We have to reset the button often. Sometimes it gets stuck open and sometimes it won't open at all. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-22
- VIN: 5TDDKRFH7FS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I experienced a sudden engine failure while driving my 2015 Toyota Highlander on Interstate 294 outside Chicago. I was driving about 75 mph in the far left lane. A warning message "Check AWD" came on the screen, followed by the Engine icon lighting up, then a "TRAC off" message appeared on the screen. I began to merge to the right across four lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder. As I was doing so, a beep sounded, and the message "Engine Stopping" appeared on the screen. The accelerator stopped working. I reached the shoulder and the car came to a stop just as I made it to the shoulder. The whole incident, from the time the first warning light came on until the car completely stopped, lasted about three minutes. Prior to this, there were no warning lights, and I had been driving the car without incident. The car had received all regular maintenance at proper intervals. Mileage was 86,100 at the time. There were five people in the car, including myself, my teenage daughter, her friend, and her friend's parents. We were driving the girls home from a summer camp. We are unharmed -- and possibly alive -- only because I was able to merge across four lanes of traffic and reach the shoulder before the engine completely failed. Just behind us and just ahead of us on this stretch of interstate, there is no shoulder. Semi trucks populate this very busy road. We had to sit on the shoulder for two hours waiting for a tow truck. We are all truly fortunate to be alive and unharmed. The vehicle is in the possession of [XXX] Toyota, [XXX] . The service department has diagnosed as follows: "Performed diagnostic and found codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0306 engine misfire codes. Code P1603 Engine stalls out. P1604 Stability malfunction. Code P1605 Rough idle. Spark plug number 6 is damaged. Check piston with borescope, piston is also damaged." I am being advised to replace the engine at a cost of $8820. Toyota US has been notified. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-15
- VIN: 5TDJKRFH3FS
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: The rear tail gate seal for lamps on both the left and right side have failed and the lamp assemblies condense and fill with water. I have read other reports on your website of the same problem with the highlander. In your other reports the a person was told Toyota will not warranty the lamps because of moisture in them because it is not a safety issue. While it is because the moisture blocks the light for the vehicle behind to see and thus rear end. I live in Massachusetts and there is a yearly vehicle inspection and when I went to get it done I was told it would not pass safety inspection with moisture in the lamp so I had to get the left hand one replaced to pass. Now 6 months later my righthand tailgate lamp is full of moisture and will not pass my upcoming Massachusetts safety inspection. The cost was $205.44 now another of the same. It is definitely a safety issue in Massachusetts and in my opinin should also be treated as such by the NHTSA for Toyota recall and reimbursement.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-04
- VIN: 5TDKKRFH8FS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On the Freeway off ramp, during the slow down- and down shifting-process the vehicle appeared to block the wheels and to skid for a short time. Also, the vibration feature that indicates loss of traction got activated for that time and the “slip indicator” warning light lit up (I do not know for how long). During the incident I felt not in control of the vehicle. Once the incident passed I retained control of the vehicle , yet the automatic transmission started to act very peculiar and frequently failed to downshift in a normal way which could only be achieved by intentionally taking pressure of the gas pedal, and only after the downshift had happened, more power cold be applied. Another brief and less pronounced perceived jolt happened on the short remainder of the drive home. Once parked at home I realized that the car would not engage when the lever was put in “reverse”, but would engage when put in “drive”. I plan to have the vehicle towed to my Toyota service station and have it inspected/fixed.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-15
- VIN: 5tddkrfh9fs
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Rear tail lamps on lift gate both sides have failed seals that allow moisture to condense inside the lens. This occurs to the point the water collects inside the lens and obstructs the emission of light when the brake pedal is depressed. Several reports of this happening can be found with a simple online search for the issue. The Manufacturer (Toyota) has to be aware of the defect in manufacturing process or design by the shear number of occurrences, yet they deny any responsibility in repair or replacement costs. The issue was first noticed at 4 years of age and around 45,000 miles. This need to be reviewed and addressed as a matter of maintaining basic safety.

Negative 2015 Toyota Highlander car reviews
Positive 2015 Toyota Highlander car reviews
-
I purchased a new XLE AWD four months ago to replace my Sienna mini-van. The Highlander is more comfortable and handles well. However, I have noticed that my mileage remains consistent at 21.1 to 21.5 mpg, regardless of how I drive. I have tested various driving conditions, including speed, AC usage, and city versus highway driving, yet my mileage remains unchanged. As a confident driver, I believe that there should be more variation in my mileage.
-
I've been driving the Highlander for two weeks now, after my 2008 CR-V was totaled. I absolutely love it and I'm enjoying every second in it. I'm now getting ready to purchase one of my own, but before doing so, I decided to read some reviews. However, I came across all sorts of crazy reviews here and on other sites, with people writing things that I know from first-hand experience are not accurate, such as poor braking or sluggish acceleration. My point is that you not only need to take it out for a test drive, but also rent one for a few days and see for yourself. If I hadn't rented one, I would have been put off by the reviews.
-
After test driving almost every SUV out there, I decided to go for the Limited model with the tech package and Blu-ray player. It also came with a tow hitch and wiring, which took me weeks to find as I searched dealers near and far. It would be great if tow hitches were included in every vehicle. The tech upgrade is definitely worth it. The blind spot monitor is flawless and saves you from having to turn your head. The radar cruise control works great too. Lane assist is perfect for long trips, and the rear HVAC controls are a huge bonus. Overall, I'm very happy with the car, but there are a couple of complaints that may be deal breakers for some. See below.
-
I've had my 2014 Highlander for a year and 8000 miles, and I must say it's nearly perfect. I haven't had a single problem with it. The ride is super smooth, the interior is beautiful, and the acceleration is great. The gas mileage is fantastic too. However, I do have two caveats. My biggest issue is with the second row. While it is very roomy and fits three across, the middle seat is not comfortable or practical. I have three kids, and I liked it because I could fit three across in the second row and load up the back with the third seat folded down for vacations and trips to the beach. Unfortunately, the middle seat is not very comfortable due to the protruding console, which is very hard and not practical for long trips. So, I have to put my youngest in half of the third seat and jam luggage or beach stuff next to her. Besides that, this is a luxury vehicle for a very affordable price. Perhaps a bit more room behind the third seat would be nice too. If you're looking for a classy, super smooth, and problem-free 3-row SUV, don't even think about getting anything else. I had a 2001 Navigator before this, and while I loved the size, it was fraught with constant and expensive problems.
-
I absolutely loved my 2015 Toyota Highlander AWD! I've had it since November 2014 and it has been a reliable and stylish car. The electronic safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring, make me feel safe and secure on the road. Although the brake is a bit soft and it takes a few seconds longer than expected to accelerate when I floor the gas pedal, it's not a big issue for me. After all, how often does one need to floor the gas pedal except in an emergency situation? The car is incredibly comfortable, except for the third row seats, which are a bit cramped for full-grown adults or teenagers on long trips. However, the 7-seater version with two captain seats in the 2nd row is perfect for my needs. The only downside to the 2015 Highlander is the audio/navigation system. Unfortunately, whenever the vehicle approaches the mileage for scheduled maintenance, the navigation system tends to freeze up, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the in-car audio system through Bluetooth can be unreliable and disconnects often. Despite these issues, I still highly recommend the 2015 Toyota Highlander. I plan to contact my local Toyota dealership to see if they can help with the audio/navigation system issue. I wonder if any other 2015 Toyota Highlander owners have experienced this problem?

The seat paddings are very uncomfortable and the radio and navigation keep resetting or flickering. Additionally, the doors will not lock because the vehicle shows the key is inside, even when it is not. Unfortunately, this car has many electrical issues and spots of rust are showing all over the vehicle. However, I was able to solve the issue of flickering and electrical problems myself by discovering that the portable external battery plugged into the USB was sending electric current back to the vehicle main board, causing it to go crazy. I didn't lose any money in the process, but the seating comfortability remains unsolved. It would be great if Toyota could add an armrest on the front seats of every family car. After 140k, the passenger heated seat is dead and the stock rims are not suitable for dirt roads as they collect a lot of mud and throw off the balance. Additionally, all-white Highlanders have bad paint and tiny rust dots will pop up everywhere around the body. The ABS and AWD lights came on, and I found out that the Reluctor ring broke, so I had to replace the whole axle assembly.

The 2015 Highlander is generally a great car. However, after driving it for a couple of days, I noticed a faint noise that can be heard when there is no music playing or the fan is off. I took it to the dealership and they explained that this is by design. The sound is similar to a hard drive resetting or on overdrive. Specifically, when the Auto for temp is on or off, there is an intermittent revved or overdrive sound coming from the temp console. I checked with a similar model and found that the sound is present. The Piercey Toyota technician explained that it is a normal Serval Motor Changing Mode. I trust that Toyota would not produce a product with a defect.

I really like my Toyota Highlander overall. Although, when I bought the car, I was a bit disappointed that I had to purchase the BASE model to get the bench in the middle row. Unfortunately, the base model didn't offer factory leather seating according to my dealership, which is not ideal for people with children. However, my husband and I agreed that once we got tired of constantly cleaning the seats or fed up with how bad they look, we would pay $2000 to a local company to transition all seating in the car to leather. While I will do this, I still know that there is nothing better than the factory installing the leather. I'm sure I will run into problems along the way. This complaint is simply a cosmetic issue. However, I have discovered a real safety concern over the past 16 months that I've had my Highlander. On 3 separate occasions, I missed an accident by a mere second -- literally. I am only 5'1I am planning to sell my car. While some may suggest using a seat cushion to lift oneself up, I believe that a car that costs over $30,000 should not require a $10 seat cushion to ensure safety. Additionally, the bulky side line of the windshield exacerbates the issue of blocking the view of cars that are in front but to the side of the driver. I have observed cars disappearing from my view completely for a second, even when I am driving defensively. I have owned many cars over the years and have never experienced a blind spot in the front side of my car. My only other concern is that the AC does not blow extremely cold air, which has been the case since the beginning. It would be a shame to have to get rid of the car because I generally like it. I hope that Toyota will redesign future models to address these issues.

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Toyota vehicle. After purchasing it for $43,000, I noticed that the wheels began to pit. Despite taking it to the car wash every two weeks, the issue persisted. I reached out to the dealership, Vero Beach Toyota, FL, and expressed my concerns multiple times. They had the wheels checked by a regional inspector who determined that the cause was environmental. Even though I live less than a mile away from the dealership and drive in the same area, Corporate Toyota offered me $750 towards the replacement of the wheels, which cost $3,000 in total. Unfortunately, as an 80-year-old, I cannot afford to replace the wheels. I am disappointed that the dealership did not consider this a defect and that the warranty did not cover it. I have a great driving record and have never had an accident or hit a curb. Thank you for listening to my experience.

I have extensive experience with Lexus models and their electronics, which have always been reliable. However, the interface of this car is the worst I have ever encountered. Despite its reasonable comfort and economy, the navigation and entertainment system ruins the entire ownership experience. It shuts down every fifteen minutes, causing me to be stranded many times. After ten shop visits and an escalation to Toyota HQ, I was informed that the unit is not completely compatible with the Apple iPhone, which is surprising given its popularity. Unfortunately, I had to sell the car and switch back to MB. I hope Toyota takes note of this feedback and works to improve their products to avoid losing more customers in the future.
